Kirill Bulatov 8b9a2df705 Share application adapter implementations (reduce LLVM IR bloat again) (#64262)
Move settings-update routing, fallible deserialization recovery,
selection effects, context-menu initialization, picker resize handles,
and ACP client setup into shared implementations. Inline the small
button callback adapters.

Kirill Bulatovandzed-zippy[bot] 84148a0f73 Reduce LLVM IR bloat one last time (#63882)
I think this is the final attempt of mine to do anything about the
binary size, as those fixes become relatively intricate and I like them
less and less.

Each commit has its own improvement stats and mainly reduce generic-code
duplication through shared non-generic helpers and `#[inline(never)]`
boundaries.

Enzo GAZZOLIandKirill Bulatov 1155a5becd Render control characters in tab titles and project panel entries (#62875)
# Objective

Fixes #62664

File names may contain control characters (`\n`, `\r`, `\t`, …) on most
platforms. Zed rendered them verbatim, so a file named `notes\ndraft.md`
broke the layout of its tab and of its project panel entry instead of
showing a readable name. The same held anywhere else a name reached the
screen without going through `Label::single_line`.

## Solution

The substitution lives in one shared place,
`ui::utils::replace_control_characters`, reached through
`Label::single_line`. `\n` keeps rendering as the `⏎` Zed already used,
so nothing that renders correctly today changes; every other C0 control
character maps onto the Unicode "Control Pictures" block by a single
rule (`U+2400 + code point`), giving `␉` for tab and `␍` for carriage
return. `DEL` maps to `␡`. C1 controls are left alone, having no
equivalent there.

Where that is wired in:

- **`Label::single_line`** — replaces its previous `\n`-only
substitution. The project panel already used it everywhere, including
folded directory components, so the panel is fixed by this alone.
- **Editor tabs** and the **default `Item::tab_content`**, neither of
which called `single_line`.
- **Terminal tab titles**, which render through their own `tab_content`.
Those titles come from OSC escape sequences, so the control characters
in them are attacker-controlled.
- **`HighlightedLabel::single_line`**, which never substituted anything
— not even `\n`. See below.
- **The file finder**, for both the file name and the path.
- **Nine `tab_content` overrides in git_ui**, by deleting them.
- **`HighlightedMatchWithPaths`**, for both the match label and its
paths — it backs the tab switcher and the outline panel, among others.

### `HighlightedLabel` needs its offsets moved, not just its text

Its highlight indices are byte offsets, and every stand-in is wider in
bytes than the character it replaces, so the offsets have to move with
the text. Left alone they index into the middle of a character, and
`highlight_ranges` slices the string at exactly those offsets — which
panics in release builds too. The constructor's `debug_panic!` does not
cover this, since `single_line` runs after construction.

So `replace_control_characters_remapping_offsets` substitutes and remaps
in one pass, over an old-to-new byte offset table built the way
`ensure_uniform_list_compatible_label` does it in `lsp_store`. This also
fixes the call sites that already asked for a single line, including the
branch picker and the tabular column filter values.

### Deleting the git_ui overrides

Nine files replicated the default `Item::tab_content` verbatim except
for the colour, hardcoding `selected ? Default : Muted` instead of
`params.text_color()`. Deleting them lets those tabs inherit the fixed
default, and fixes a second bug along the way: none of them dimmed when
the pane lost focus. Titles and icons are unaffected — they come from
`tab_content_text` and `tab_icon`, which the default calls.
`git_graph.rs` already did it this way.

### Tabular column headers

These never went through a `Label` at all: the raw `SharedString` was a
child of a `div`. They now display stand-ins, while right-click-copy
still yields the real column name.

Two notes for reviewers:

- Both helpers avoid allocating when there is nothing to replace, so the
common path is untouched. The previous `self.label.replace('\n', "⏎")`
allocated a `String` on every render for every label — including every
visible project panel entry, every frame.
- Every stand-in is exactly one character, so character offsets are
preserved and the existing `truncate_and_trailoff` math on tab titles
stays correct.

## Testing

- Unit tests cover both helpers: each control character's substitution,
repeated occurrences, multi-byte characters (accents, emoji), the
borrow-vs-own behaviour, the preserved character count, C1 passthrough,
and — for the remapping — offsets before, at and after a replacement,
offsets at and past the end, and the invariant that every remapped
offset lands on a character boundary.
- Unit tests cover `Label::single_line` and
`HighlightedLabel::single_line`, the entry points every call site uses.
`highlighted_label.rs` had no tests before.
- `cargo test -p ui -p file_finder -p workspace -p project_panel -p
git_ui -p git_ui_core -p terminal_view -p tabular_data_preview` passes
(774 tests), as do `cargo clippy` and `cargo fmt --check`.
- No existing test changes behaviour: tests assert on
`tab_content_text`, which is untouched; only rendering paths changed.
- Verified manually on macOS (aarch64) — see Showcase.

## Showcase

A directory holding `report<TAB>table.csv`, `notes<LF>draft.md`,
`carriage<CR>return.txt` and a normally named `normal.txt`, all four
open as tabs.

**Before**

![before](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Taqinou/zed/0d5ee2b4f94db7bcb713298c38cf411458b75239/62664/before.png)

Three things change:

1. **The `notes<LF>draft.md` tab** is the clearest one. Before, the
literal newline splits the tab across two lines — `notes` above
`draft.md` — distorting the whole tab bar. After, it stays on one line.
2. **`carriage<CR>return.txt` in the project panel** renders as
`carriagereturn.txt` before: the `\r` is completely invisible, so the
name reads as one word and there is no way to tell a character is there.
After, it renders as `carriage␍return.txt`.
3. **`report<TAB>table.csv`** shows a bare gap before, indistinguishable
from a space. After, it renders as `report␉table.csv`.

Note that `notes<LF>draft.md` looks the same in the project panel in
both shots: that entry already called `single_line`, which already
handled `\n`. That is precisely the asymmetry this PR removes.

### File finder

Before, the newline also breaks the list itself — the
`notes<LF>draft.md` row grows to two lines and overlaps the row beneath
it.

**Before**

![file finder

Searching for `table` exercises the offset remapping, the match falling
after the control character:

**Before**

![match
before](https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Taqinou/zed/0d5ee2b4f94db7bcb713298c38cf411458b75239/62664/match-before.png)

One thing this PR does **not** cover: the breadcrumb below the tab bar
still renders the raw tab character, as it goes through a different
path.

## Release Notes:

- Fixed file names containing control characters, such as tabs and
newlines, rendering unreadably in tabs, the project panel, the file

HuaGu-Dragon 68bd0faf7e file_finder: Fix auto-jump to wrong file on hover via new set_hovered_index hook (#61716)
# Objective

- Fixes #54158

## Solution

- The root cause is in `FileFinderDelegate::set_selected_index`: it
always sets `has_changed_selected_index = true`, regardless of whether
the selection change was triggered by keyboard navigation or mouse
hover.
- Fix: Added a separate `set_hovered_index` hook to the `PickerDelegate`
trait with a default implementation that delegates to
`set_selected_index`. The hover handler in Picker now calls
`set_hovered_index` instead of `set_selected_index`. FileFinderDelegate
overrides `set_hovered_index` to update `selected_index` without setting
`has_changed_selected_index`, so hover-triggered selection changes no
longer interfere with the `Cmd+P` auto-confirm logic.

## Testing

- Added `test_hover_does_not_set_has_changed_selected_index` in
`file_finder_tests.rs`

Apoorva VermaandKirill Bulatov 0d952edd5a text_finder: Highlight the query as a regex when the regex filter is on (#61128)
the buffer search and project search bars both already load the `regex`
language and put it on their query buffer when the regex filter is on.
the text finder never got that, so a regex you type in there is just
plain text.

did the same thing here. the only slightly annoying part was that the
picker's head editor is `pub(crate)`, so text_finder couldn't get at it.
added a small `query_editor()` accessor to `Picker` for that.
`adjust_query_regex_language` mirrors the two existing ones.

test asserts the query buffer's language is regex with the filter on,
and gone once it's off.

Closes #59945.

about use of f64 literals where f32 is expected, so I've fixed them - it
should make future upgrades more straightforward.

vinod akshatandChristopher Biscardi e78adfd9ab Picker: Support child and parent navigation ( menu::SelectChild and menu::SelectParent in PickerDelegate ) fixes (#61053) (#61314)
# Objective

- Provides directory navigation (forward and backward) inside the
built-in system file finder / path prompt using keyboard
  shortcuts.
- Fixes #61053

## Solution

1. Extended `PickerDelegate` trait with `select_child` and
`select_parent` methods following conventions from other methods such as
`confirm_completion` (defaulting to `None`)
2. Implemented the new delegate methods inside `OpenPathDelegate`:
- `select_child`: Finds the selected directory candidate, appends it to
the current path query, and appends the path separator.
- `select_parent`: Moves upwards by trimming the current directory and
getting the parent directory path.
3. Added listeners for `Self::select_child` and `Self::select_parent` in
the `/crates/picker/src/render.rs`

## Testing

- Did you test these changes? If so, how?
I actually went ahead and changed the keybindings in
`/assets/keymaps/default-macos.json` as shown :
```json
  {
    "context": "Picker > Editor",
    "use_key_equivalents": true,
    "bindings": {
      "escape": "menu::Cancel",
      "up": "menu::SelectPrevious",
      "down": "menu::SelectNext",
      // I binded to shift arrow because I wanted to keep the cursor movement still relevant
      "shift-left": "menu::SelectParent",// shift left
      "shift-right": "menu::SelectChild",// shift right
      "tab": "picker::ConfirmCompletion",
      "alt-enter": ["picker::ConfirmInput", { "secondary": false }],
      "cmd-alt-enter": ["picker::ConfirmInput", { "secondary": true }]
      // Picker bindings (TogglePreview, SetPreviewRight/Below/Hidden,
      // ToggleActionsMenu) live in keymaps/specific-overrides-macos.json, which
      // is loaded after the base keymap so they win over conflicting base-keymap
      // Editor bindings.
    }
  },
```
Then I did manual testing as shown in the Showcase Section.
I did not push this change as I was not sure if this was required as the
bug was about adding support for child and parent navigation.

- Are there any parts that need more testing?
- How can other people (reviewers) test your changes? Is there anything
specific they need to know?
This is my first Pull Request in a large Open Source Repository, so any
feedback on testing conventions or additional edge cases would be
especially helpful.

- If relevant, what platforms did you test these changes on, and are
there any important ones you can't test?

Danilo Leal ae6cb0aff1 picker: Improve multi-select discoverability and rendering (#60919)
This PR reworks how multi-select mode is rendered in pickers (only used
by the file finder and text finder).

The "Multi Select" entry previously lived inside the footer's Actions
menu, which was hard to discover and its toggle checkmark misaligned the
menu's keybinding column. This PR changes to an icon button at the
far-roght edge of the search editor, with a tooltip showing the
keybinding to toggle it.

Also made each list item use the actual Checkbox component instead of a
bespoke re-implementation of it. And in doing so, added a few design
improvements to the list item so that it received the checkbox while
preserving proper styles for each interaction state, as well as
displaying the keybinding to select the item or check the item.

Here's a quick video, showing these changes off:

304f264e76 pickers: Add multi-select support (#59931)
Users can now Cmd+click multiple files in the file picker and press
Enter to open them all at once. Tab can also be used to select items
without clicking, advancing the cursor automatically.

# Objective

Currently, when opening the file picker (Cmd+P), users can only open one
file at a time. This adds multi-select support so users can select
multiple files and open them all at once.

Fixes #59818

## Solution

Added a `selected_indices` set to `Picker` to track which items the user
has toggled into a multi-selection. Regular clicks still open a file
immediately (unchanged behavior).
Cmd+clicking adds a file to the selection without opening it, and
pressing Enter opens all selected files at once. A `confirm_multi`
method was added to the delegate trait so individual delegates (like the
file finder) can handle opening multiple files with a safe fallback for
delegates that don't support it. Multi-selection is cleared when the
picker
is dismissed or the search query changes. Selected items show a
background highlight and a focused left border so the user always knows
what's selected.

## How to use it

1. Open the file or test picker.
2. Search and either Cmd+click or tab it to add it to the selection (the
file will not open yet).
3. Repeat for any other files you want to open.
4. To deselect a file, Cmd+click it again.
5. Alternatively, hover over an item and press Tab to select it with the
keyboard, the cursor automatically moves to the next item so you can
keep selecting quickly.
6. Once you have all the files you want, press Enter to open them all at
once.

## Testing

Tested manually on macOS.

- **Single select:** Clicking on a file opens it directly, which is the
existing behavior and remains unchanged.
- **Multi-select via Cmd+Click:** Holding Cmd and clicking multiple
items adds them to the selection. Cmd+clicking an already-selected item
deselects it. Pressing Enter opens all selected files at once.
- **Multi-select via Tab:** Hovering over an item and pressing Tab
selects it without clicking or opening it, allowing keyboard-driven
multi-selection.

Zephiris Evergreen 7e9669d164 picker: Automatically switch layout depending on window dimensions (#60559)
# Objective

Fixes #59820.

## Solution

At a high level, I approached this by conditionally rendering a `Below`
preview layout only when the preview was at or below the min width of
the `Right` when the layout is `Right`. Since there's one breakpoint at
`SizeBounds::min_width()` and hitting that breakpoint only changes
rendering (and doesn't change the state), there's no need to persist to
storage or memory that the view is forced to be Below.

I toggled between the two rendering modes by defining
`Picker::preview_layout_rendered()` that would return `Below` if the
window was equal to or smaller than its min width. Then I replaced all
calls of `preview_layout()` that used the response purely for rendering
purposes with `preview_layout_rendered()`. I avoided replacing
`preview_layout()` calls that were responsible for persisting the
current layout and window dimensions to disk to ensure that changes to
the window dimensions were properly synced to the correct layout. This
way changes to the window while in the `BelowAuto` rendering mode edit
the `Right` window dimensions on disk.

## Testing

I tested these changes manually with the following actions on my local
machine (an Apple Silicon Macbook Pro):
- resizing the popover
- resizing the window
- adjusting the split
- making sure the popover size and split percent remains the same after:
  - closing and re-opening the popover
- closing and re-opening the application and making sure the window size
and split percent remains the same

Reviewers can test my changes by performing the same manual actions.

Danilo Leal e41a55c3c0 Improve diff tabs toolbar design (#60464)
This PR adds a bunch of design improvements to the toolbar of (tab)
views that display diffs: the uncommitted changes, branch diff, and
agent diff tabs. This involves adjusting spacing, sizing, and other
small tweaks across all of these views, including touching up the
divider component API a little bit, adjusting Git icons design, adding
diff stat numbers to the uncommitted changes tab so its consistent with
the others, and more (e.g., moving the split buttons into its own
component to ensure they look the same across all uses). Ended up also
going on a slight de-tour to make all uses of the split button in the
Git panel consistent design-wise.

All in all, this is just tidying up the design of all of these surfaces
that are all relatively similar.

augustandYara 461e6df060 project_symbols: Add preview to project symbols picker (#59863)
Candidate fix for #59822.

Adds a live preview pane to the project symbols picker, matching the
file finder and project search pickers. When the selection moves, the
selected symbol's file is shown in the preview with its declaration line
highlighted and vertically centered.

## Changes
- `project_symbols`: construct the picker with
`uniform_list_with_preview`; asynchronously open the buffer for the
selected symbol (cached by candidate id, cleared on each new query) and
implement `try_get_preview_data_for_match` to return the buffer plus the
symbol's anchor range.
- `picker`: add a public `refresh_preview` so a delegate can push
preview data once a buffer finishes opening asynchronously (the symbol
buffer is not available synchronously, unlike text search which already
holds open buffers).

Aleksei Gusev a2e2e06875 Only show preview line numbers if enabled by user (#59957)
# Objective

- Currently, the file preview pane in pickers forces line numbers and
the editor gutter to always be visible, ignoring user-configured
preferences. This PR ensures the preview component respects the user's
global editor layout settings.

## Solution

- Modified `EditorPreview::new` within `crates/picker/src/preview.rs`.
- Imported `EditorSettings` from the `editor` crate.
- Replaced the hardcoded `true` values for `set_show_gutter` and
`set_show_line_numbers` with the user's active global configuration
retrieved via `EditorSettings::get_global(cx).gutter.line_numbers`.

## Testing

- Did you test these changes? If so, how?
- Yes, manually verified that toggling line numbers off or using
relative line numbers in `settings.json` is accurately reflected inside
the picker's file preview pane.
- Are there any parts that need more testing?
- No, using the global context lookup seamlessly integrates with Zed's
existing configuration lifecycle.
- How can other people (reviewers) test your changes? Is there anything
specific they need to know?
- Open your `settings.json` and change your line number preferences
(e.g., set `"line_numbers": false`).
- Bring up a picker that renders a file preview (like the project search
or file finder).
- Confirm that the preview pane's gutter and line number layout
perfectly matches your active configuration.
- If relevant, what platforms did you test these changes on, and are
there any important ones you can't test?
  - Tested on Linux.

ozacodandozacod 79039f93d7 picker: Fix layout persistency with preview setting change (#59827)
## Summary

When you change a picker's preview position (toggle it, or set it
right/below/hidden), that choice should be remembered the next time the
picker opens. Previously it wasn't: the last-used layout was only
written to the database as a side effect of
`store_shape_for_this_layout`, which runs exclusively when a resize
completes (`render.rs`). So changing only the preview position without
also dragging to resize, was forgotten on the next open.

All layout changes funnel through a single chokepoint,
`set_preview_layout`, but it only updated the in-memory `preview.layout`
and reloaded the per-layout shape; it never persisted the layout key.

## Solution

`set_preview_layout` now persists the layout immediately via a new
`store_last_layout` helper, which writes just the
`LAST_PREVIEW_LAYOUT` key — deliberately without writing the current
shape, so a never-resized layout's default size isn't frozen into the
database as if the user had chosen it.

  Both persistence paths are now correct:
  - Resize completes — saves size and layout (unchanged).
- Position-only change (toggle / set right / set below / set hidden)
saves the layout right away.

This applies to every picker with a preview (file finder, text finder),
since the persistence is keyed generically by the picker delegate name.

## Testing

- Manual: open the file and text finder → switch the preview to Below
(or Right) without resizing → close and reopen → it returns in that
position; hide the preview → reopen → it stays hidden. Resizing still
persists size as before.

Release Notes:

- Fixed picker preview position not being remembered when changed
without resizing the picker

5bf85b2149 text_finder: Send selected word to text finder query (#59766)
## Objective

Make text finder match project search and buffer search by
pre-populating its query from the active editor according to
`seed_search_query_from_cursor`.

## Solution

- Seed text finder from the active editor's query suggestion when
opening it.
- Pass the seeded query into the picker and select the query text so
typing replaces it immediately.

## Testing

- Manually tested visually by opening text finder from an editor with a
selection and with the cursor on text, confirming the query is
pre-populated and selected.

Danilo Leal be50aaccbe picker: Simplify presentation and sizing APIs, add preview-aware defaults (#59719)
The recent "pickers with previews" overhaul left the picker
sizing/presentation API spread across several overlapping knobs that
every call site had to set correctly — and many didn't, causing pickers
across the app to render at the wrong width, lose their container, or
stop dismissing. This PR consolidates that surface into a small,
hard-to-misuse API and makes correct sizing the default.

Net effect: a plain `Picker::uniform_list(delegate, …)` now renders
correctly out of the box (standard width, standard max-height, shrinks
to fit, dismisses properly), and the ~35 call sites only specify what
genuinely differs.

## API changes

**Presentation** — three overlapping booleans (`is_modal`, `is_popover`,
`is_resizable`) collapsed into one enum, with resizability living inside
the only variant where it's meaningful:

```rust
enum Presentation {
    Modal { resizable: bool }, // own chrome, dismisses on blur, optionally resizable
    Popover,                   // own chrome, dismisses on blur, never resizable
    Embedded,                  // host container owns chrome + dismissal
}
```

- `modal(bool)` is **removed** in favor of explicit, self-documenting
builders:
  - *(default)* → `Modal` (resizable iff it has a preview)
  - `.popover()` → `Popover` (menu-attached surfaces)
  - `.embedded()` → `Embedded` (pickers nested in a larger modal/view)
- Dynamic callers use `.when(cond, Picker::embedded)` (added `impl
FluentBuilder for Picker`).

**Sizing** — preview-vs-not now drives everything; the manual padding
knob is gone:

| Before | After |
|---|---|
| `vertical_padding` field + `no_vertical_padding()` | removed — derived
from whether a preview is visible |
| `height(...)` (ambiguous: fixed vs max) | `max_height(...)` (plain
pickers shrink-to-fit, capped here) |
| `minimum_results_width(...)` | removed — a plain picker's min width
tracks its opening width; preview pickers use standard internal pane
mins |
| default size = 60% viewport | default = `DEFAULT_MODAL_WIDTH` (34rem)
× `DEFAULT_MODAL_MAX_HEIGHT` (24rem, max) |
| resize handles gated on `is_modal` | gated on `is_resizable` (new
`resizable(bool)` builder; auto-`true` for preview pickers) |

Call sites now only override the exceptions: narrow popover selectors
(`initial_width`), the taller outline view (`max_height`), and preview
pickers (constructed via `*_with_preview`).

## Behavior fixes

- **Wrong widths everywhere**: pickers were falling back to
60%-of-viewport because the original migration set
`minimum_results_width` but never `initial_width`. Fixed at the source
via the new defaults.
- **Popovers had no container and wouldn't dismiss**: `is_modal=false`
was suppressing both the elevated background *and* blur-dismiss. Split
out so popovers keep their chrome and dismiss on click-away/escape. This
fixed the agent-panel model/profile selectors, sidebar recent projects,
and the settings theme/font/icon/ollama pickers (which were incorrectly
using `modal(false)`).
- **Sidebar recent projects stretched to full height**: was missing the
shrink-to-fit behavior; now capped and content-sized like other
popovers.
- **Preview crash**: removed an over-strict `debug_assert!` that
panicked when previewing an empty file (`message == None && editor
empty` is valid).
- **Preview-aware default size**: pickers open at standard width with
the preview hidden, and expand to the larger "telescope" size when a
preview is shown. Fixes the text finder rendering super-wide by default,
and makes the file finder expand (rather than cram its results) when you
toggle the preview.

6a6fcbebc4 Add preview to pickers and make them resizable (#59604)
Overhauls Zed's pickers to make them resizable and give them a preview.

Closes #8279

### Background
The most requested Zed feature has the last year has been a [Telescope
like search box](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8279)
[discussion](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/22581).
To understand why this is so popular we need to understand search can
serve thee goals:
- Navigation: fuzzy search is faster & easier then clicking in a file
tree
- Exploration: example, find a function by a word in its doc comment
- Collecting: example, getting a list of functions to change

The project search which shows results in a multibuffer is the perfect
way to operate on a list of items. Navigation and Exploration need a lot
of context around each result and offer fast navigation between them.
For both of these live searching is also critical.

The `telescope UI` is a picker with a preview to the right or below.
It's offered in various editors and IDE's most famously Neovim (through
the Telescope plugin), IntelliJ (natively), Helix (natively) and of
course VScode (plugins) and it's _many_ forks.

While having a UI like that for text search (our project search) is most
requested the UX pattern is applied widely, from `find_all_references`
to `bookmarks`. It enhances most pickers. Note that we have over 50
different picker modals!

The community has tried to build something like this for Zed:
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/44530
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/45307
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/43790

These all became huge PR's that we could not merge for various reasons.
This is a really hard feature to integrate in Zed!
This PR got started as https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
and supercedes that.

### Design
- Extend pickers to support an optional preview with minimal changes to
the pickers themselves.
- Make pickers resizable.
- Complement the existing search do not replace it by having both UI's
share the underlying search and allow freely switching between them.
- Allow extending the preview to things other then files.
- Maintain a clean design on all the pickers.

### Heigh level Implementation overview
- Adds an `Option<Preview>` to `Picker`
- Gives `PickerDelegate` a method to communicate a preview to the Picker
- Overhaul the way pickers are drawn to allow for resizing them.
Implemented on the `Shape` and `SizeBouds` structs.
- Adds a high level way to draw the `footer` and `editor` so we do not
need to change much to the pickers.
- Adds a new text finder Picker
- Adds a way to take a running search from project search and hand it to
the text finder Picker and the other way round
- Give the file finder a preview

### Next steps
A more detailed list and how to help out will be added to the tracking
issue for [Pickes with
previews](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/56037)
- Add more previews to more pickers!
- Enable selectioning multiple items in pickers and performing actions
on those
- Open selected items in a multibuffer
- Add a way to restore the last picker
- Make popovers (picker attached to some menu) resizable as well

Smit Barmase 2001dfd242 recent_projects: Allow bulk deleting entries without scroll jumping (#54777)
Closes #52292

This PR preserves the scroll offset of the List used in Recent Projects
while deleting items. It does that by:
- Adding the `is_scrolled_to_end` method to the GPUI list, which helps
us determine where the new selection should be, since it depends on
whether items are taking the deleted slot from below or above.
- Adding `ScrollBehavior` to `update_matches`, which lets you preserve
the scroll offset even for `List` (not `UniformList`) after a reset.

Finn EversandDanilo Leal c49ffd1e88 Fix bad GitHub merge queue merge (#54721)
No, sadly, the title is not a typo. See
https://www.githubstatus.com/incidents/zsg1lk7w13cf for the context.
I'll read with joy and popcorn through that root cause analysis.

It makes literally zero sense what happened here, but for some completly
bonkers reason GitHub completely messed up the merge queue with
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/54632.

I have no idea how it happened. It makes literally zero sense. A PR
going into the merge queue should have the same LoC when getting out of
it. GitHub obviously does not check this. GitHub causes extra work with
a feature that is supposed to save time.

Thanks, I guess.

Danilo Leal 4d89375653 recent_projects: Make the currently active project visible in the picker (#53302)
This PR improves the recent projects picker in the context of
multi-workspace:

- The currently active project now appears in the "This Window" section
with a checkmark indicator. Clicking it simply dismisses the picker,
since there's nothing to switch to. This feels like a better UX because
it gives you visual confirmation of where you are.
- The remove button is hidden for the current project entry, both in the
row and the footer, to prevent accidentally removing the workspace
you're actively using.
- The "Add to Workspace" button now uses a more descriptive icon
(`FolderOpenAdd`) and shows a meta tooltip clarifying that it adds the
project as a multi-root folder project.

The primary click/enter behavior remains unchanged—it opens the selected
project in the current window's multi-workspace. The "Open in New
Window" action continues to be available via the icon button or
shift+enter.

Release Notes:

- Improved the recent projects picker to show the currently active
project in the "This Window" section with a checkmark indicator.

Danilo Leal 0aa858899e rules_library: Fix hover selecting active rule (#53264)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/53159

Recently, we changed the behavior of pickers so that hovering matches
would also select them. This makes sense for most pickers that are used
as "regular" pickers, but we have some in Zed that are not. A great
example of one is the rules library, which sort of became way less
usable with this behavior. So, this PR introduces a simple bool trait
method to the picker so that we can turn this behavior off whenever
necessary. The rules library kicks off as the only instance of it being
turned off.

Release Notes:

- Fix navigation within the rules library making it so hovering the
sidebar doesn't activate the visible rule.

Om ChillureandNathan Sobo 900269bf7f picker: Fix mouse overrides selected item highlight in searchable dropdown (#50827)
### Fixes #31865

### Problem
When navigating a picker (command palette, file finder, etc.) with the
keyboard and then hovering with the mouse, two items would appear
highlighted at the same time - one from the keyboard selection
ghost_element_selected background and one from the CSS style
ghost_element_hover background. This happened because GPUI's CSS hover
is applied at paint time independently from the Rust selection state.

### Solution
Added a keyboard_navigated: bool flag to [Picker] to track whether the
last navigation was via keyboard or mouse.

When a keyboard navigation action fires (↑, ↓, Home, End, etc.),
`keyboard_navigated` is set to true. A transparent
`block_mouse_except_scroll` overlay div is added on top of each list
item, preventing the CSS style from firing on `ListItem` children.

When the mouse moves over any item, the overlay's `on_mouse_move`
handler fires, clears keyboard_navigated, moves the selection to that
item, and re-renders - removing all overlays and restoring normal mouse
hover behavior.
The `on_hover` handler also moves the selection to whichever item the
mouse enters, so mouse navigation is fully functional.
Clicks work through the overlay since `block_mouse_except_scroll` only
affects hover hit-testing, not click events on the parent div.

### Behavior
Matches VS Code / IntelliJ — keyboard navigation suppresses hover
highlights until the mouse moves, at which point normal hover resumes.
Only one item is ever highlighted at a time.

Danilo Leal e0fb1843ff ui: Make docs aside in pickers and context menu render centered to its trigger (#45868)
This has been something we've wanted to do for a long time since docs
aside thus far have been hard-anchored either at the top or bottom of
the container that their trigger is sitting in. This PR introduces the
change so that they're centered with their trigger, regardless of
whether it's on a context menu or picker, by including a canvas element
in both the container and the trigger to calculate where the docs aside
should precisely sit on. Here's the result:

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8147ad05-1927-4353-991d-405631de67d0

Note that at the moment, docs aside are only visible through _hovering_,
and ideally, they should be available on both hover and selection
(keyboard nav). But I'll leave that for later.

1ca705dcfb Fix stale pending keybinding indicators on focus change (#44678)
Closes #ISSUE

Problem:

- The status bar’s pending keystroke indicator (shown next to --NORMAL--
in Vim mode) didn’t clear when focus moved to another context, e.g.
hitting g in the editor then clicking the Git panel. The keymap state
correctly canceled the prefix, but observers that render the indicator
never received a “pending input changed” notification, so the UI kept
showing stale prefixes until a new keystroke occurred.

Fix:

- The change introduces a `pending_input_changed_queued` flag and a new
helper `notify_pending_input_if_needed` which will flushes the queued
notification as soon as we have an App context. The
`pending_input_changed` now resets the flag after notifying subscribers.

Vasyl Protsiv 009124c648 gpui: Add 'Nearest' scrolling strategy to 'UniformList' (#41844)
This PR introduces `Nearest` scrolling strategy to `UniformList`. This
is now used in completions menu and the picker to choose the appropriate
scrolling strategy depending on movement direction. Previously,
selecting the next element after the last visible item caused the menu
to scroll with `ScrollStrategy::Top`, which scrolled the whole page and
placed the next element at the top. This behavior is inconsistent,
because using `ScrollStrategy::Top` when moving up only scrolls one
element, not the whole page.

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ccfb238f-8f76-4a18-a18d-bbcb63340c5a

The solution is to introduce the `Nearest` scrolling strategy which will
internally choose the scrolling strategy depending on whether the new
selected item is below or above currently visible items. This ensures a
single-item scroll regardless of movement direction.

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8502efb8-e2c0-4ab1-bd8d-93103841a9c4

I also noticed that some functions in the file have different logic
depending on `y_flipped`. This appears related to reversing the order of
elements in the list when the completion menu appears above the cursor.
This was a feature suggested in #11200 and implemented in #23446. It
looks like this feature was reverted in #27765 and there currently seem
to be no way to have `y_flipped` to be set to `true`.

My understanding is that the opposite scroll strategy should be used if
`y_flipped`, but since there is no way to enable this feature to test it
and I don't know if the feature is ever going to be reintroduced I
decided not to include it in this PR.

Anthony Eid f985a02dd6 Fix tab switcher spacing bug (#41329)
The tab switcher render matches calls each workspace item's
`Item::tab_content` function that can return an element of variable

this would cause spacing issues when tab_contents elements had different
sizes.

The fix is by changing the picker to use a material list under the hood.
