### Bug 1 — constraint-blind text layout cache (the collapse)
`TextLayout`'s measure closure is stateful (each call overwrites the
shared element state used for painting), and its cache check served
cached sizes to unconstrained probes regardless of the constraints they
were computed under:
1. `uniform_list::measure_item` lays an item out at `(MinContent,
MinContent)`; the row's `min_w_0` lets it shrink to ~0, so labels get
truncated at a tiny width — and that tiny size lands in the element
state.
2. The real layout probes the label's flex base size with
`available_space.width = MaxContent` (taffy maps Definite → MaxContent).
Truncated labels are `whitespace_nowrap`, so both `wrap_width` and
`truncate_width` were `None` → the cache check passed → the poisoned
tiny size became the flex basis → labels rendered at ~5 chars.
**Fix**: record `truncate_width` in `TextLayoutInner` and never serve a
cached layout that was computed *with* truncation to an unconstrained
probe; the honest intrinsic size is recomputed instead, and the final
`PerformLayout` call re-truncates against the real resolved width.
### Bug 2 — truncation width math disagrees with shaping (the ~2-char
loss)
After fix 1, rows got their full width, but exact-fit strings like
`Cargo.toml` still lost ~2 chars:
- Sizing measures via `shape_text` (real shaping with kerning); the
element gets exactly `ceil(shaped_width)`.
- The truncation decision (`LineWrapper::should_truncate_line_middle`
etc.) sums **per-character advances** — no kerning — with zero
tolerance, overestimating width for some glyph sequences. Text sitting
in a box of exactly its own measured width got truncated, losing ~2
chars to fit the `…`. String-dependent (kerning pairs), hence
`Cargo.toml` broke while `Cargo.lock` didn't.
- Previously masked because taffy 0.10 usually skipped the final measure
invocation, so the truncation path rarely ran with an exact-fit width.
**Fix**: before truncating (nowrap case, `wrap_width.is_none()`), shape
the untruncated text and skip truncation if the *shaped* width fits —
matching CSS `text-overflow`, which only activates on actual overflow.
Cheap: the shaping result is a `line_layout_cache` hit from the earlier
untruncated sizing probe.
### Bug 3 — `MinContent` used instead of `MaxContent` that caused over
truncation of certain labels

Follow up to #52502
This fixes a severe hang in the markdown preview when searching for text
caused by `paint_search_highlights`. We were iterating over all lines
for each highlight, and for each highlight we called
`layout.line_layout_for_index` which internally would iterate over all
the lines of the text layout.
With this optimisation we paint all highlights in one pass. We sort the
highlight ranges, iterate through the lines and only access
`WrappedLineSegments` when we actually have a highlight in that line.
E.g. if you copy this text
(https://gist.github.com/bennetbo/e313f3023da9fec42e090177a5373152) into
the editor, open the markdown preview and search for `codex` Zed Nightly
will completely freeze. After this optimisation it is totally smooth
even in debug mode.

## Context
This follow-up was inspired by Christopher’s suggestion in the review
comment on #58483: long filenames should truncate in the middle so both
the beginning and the suffix/extension remain visible.
Previously, very long filenames in picker rows could still be clipped or
end-truncated, making files with shared prefixes hard to distinguish.
This adds middle-truncation support to GPUI text overflow and applies it
to filename-focused picker surfaces: the tab switcher and the Ctrl-P
file finder. Normal editor tab bar behavior remains unchanged and
continues to use the existing title length cap.
## How to Review
- **`crates/gpui/src/style.rs`, `crates/gpui/src/styled.rs`,
`crates/gpui/src/elements/text.rs`,
`crates/gpui/src/text_system/line_wrapper.rs`**: Adds
`TextOverflow::TruncateMiddle`, wires it through text layout, and
implements middle truncation while preserving valid text runs. Very
narrow widths now show the truncation affix instead of falling back to
the abruptly clipped original text.
- **`crates/ui/src/components/label/label_like.rs`,
`crates/ui/src/components/label/label.rs`,
`crates/ui/src/components/label/highlighted_label.rs`**: Exposes middle
truncation through the shared label components.
- **`crates/workspace/src/item.rs`, `crates/editor/src/items.rs`,
`crates/workspace/src/pane.rs`,
`crates/tab_switcher/src/tab_switcher.rs`**: Adds an explicit
tab-content opt-in for middle truncation. The tab switcher enables it,
while the normal tab bar and dragged tabs keep their existing behavior.
- **`crates/file_finder/src/file_finder.rs`**: Applies middle truncation
to Ctrl-P file finder filenames and lets the path shrink from the start
so long paths do not hide important filename suffixes.

Painting primitives at non-integer pixel coordinates produces blurry
output. Pixel snapping converts layout coordinates into integer
device-pixel coordinates so painted edges land exactly on physical pixel
boundaries.
Non-integer coordinates can arise for several reasons, including:
- flex distribution, percentages, centering, and text measurement can
produce fractional element sizes and positions;
- at fractional scale factors (for example 125% or 150%), integer
logical-pixel values can map to non-integer device-pixel values.
We pixel-snap by rounding in device-pixel space, after multiplying by
`scale_factor`, so that snapping targets physical pixels. Bounds are
divided by `scale_factor` before being returned to GPUI.
Midpoints are rounded toward zero. This is a stylistic choice: a
1-logical-pixel line at 150% scale should render as 1 dp rather than 2
dp.
Pixel snapping is done in two phases:
1. Pre-layout metric snapping. Before Taffy computes layout, all
authored absolute lengths are rounded in `to_taffy`. This includes
borders, padding, gaps, and explicit sizes. Custom-measured leaf nodes
have their measured sizes rounded up to integer device-pixel lengths.
2. Post-layout edge snapping. After Taffy resolves the tree, layout
relationships such as flex shares, grid tracks, percentages, and
centering can produce new fractional edge positions. Boxes now have
edges in absolute coordinates, and snapping must decide where those
edges land on the device-pixel grid.
Ideally, post-layout snapping would satisfy:
- Edge closure. Two raw layout edges at the same absolute position
should snap to the same pixel column.
- Translation stability. A component's internal geometry should not
change when it moves to a new absolute position.
These goals are in tension because rounding is not associative. The
simple local schemes make different tradeoffs:
- Absolute edge rounding gives each window coordinate one answer, so
coincident edges always close globally. But a span's snapped length is
`round(far) - round(near)`, which may change by 1 dp as its absolute
origin moves.
- Parent-relative edge rounding rounds each child inside its parent's
coordinate space. This guarantees translation stability, but a shared
edge reached through different parents can accumulate different
rounding, causing non-closure between cousins.
- Length rounding rounds each width, height, and thickness independently
and then places boxes from those rounded lengths. Sizes stay stable
under translation, but neighboring boxes derive their shared boundary
from different sources, so closure is not guaranteed.
We apply absolute edge rounding for each element's outer box in
post-layout rounding to preserve closure. Border and padding widths are
not touched by post-layout rounding; they keep their pre-layout rounded
value so that they remain stable under translation.
This gives both closure and translation stability in the case that all
local metrics are integer device-pixel lengths. Pre-layout rounding
covers that in most cases. The exception is metrics resolved by layout
relationships, such as percentages. Outer box edges will still close
globally, and painted border widths are still snapped independently, but
the raw content-box origin can carry a 1 dp residual into descendants.

Release Notes:
- Fixed potentially blurry appearance of UI elements when using
fractional display scaling.
This PR adds the `cli_default_open_behavior` setting and a first-run TUI
prompt
that appears when `zed <path>` is invoked without flags while existing
windows are
open and the setting hasn't been configured yet.
## What it does
### Setting and prompt
- Adds a new `cli_default_open_behavior` workspace setting with two
values:
`existing_window` (default) and `new_window`.
- When the user runs `zed <path>` for the first time with existing Zed
windows
open, a `dialoguer::Select` prompt in the CLI asks them to choose their
preferred behavior. The choice is persisted to `settings.json`.
- The prompt is skipped when:
- An explicit flag (`-n`, `-e`, `-a`) is given
- No existing Zed windows are open
- The setting is already configured in `settings.json`
- The paths being opened are already contained in an existing workspace
### IPC transport abstraction
- Introduces a `CliResponseSink` trait in the `cli` crate that abstracts
`IpcSender<CliResponse>`, with an implementation for the real IPC
sender.
- Replaces `IpcSender<CliResponse>` with `Box<dyn CliResponseSink>` /
`&dyn CliResponseSink` across all signatures in `open_listener.rs`:
`OpenRequestKind::CliConnection`, `handle_cli_connection`,
`maybe_prompt_open_behavior`, `open_workspaces`, `open_local_workspace`.
- Extracts the inline CLI response loop from `main.rs` into a testable
`cli::run_cli_response_loop` function.
- Switches the request channel from bounded `mpsc::channel(16)` to
`mpsc::unbounded()`, eliminating `smol::block_on` in the bridge thread.
### End-to-end tests
Seven new tests exercise both the CLI-side response loop and the
Zed-side
handler connected through in-memory channels, using `allow_parking()` so
the
real `cli::run_cli_response_loop` runs on an OS thread while the GPUI
executor
drives the Zed handler:
- No flags, no windows → no prompt, opens new window
- No flags, existing windows, user picks "existing window" → prompt,
setting persisted
- No flags, existing windows, user picks "new window" → prompt, setting
persisted
- Setting already configured → no prompt
- Paths already in existing workspace → no prompt
- Explicit `-e` flag → no prompt
- Explicit `-n` flag → no prompt
Existing tests that previously used `ipc::channel()` now use a
`DiscardResponseSink`, removing OS-level IPC from all tests.
Release Notes:
- Added a first-run prompt when using `zed <path>` to choose between
opening
in an existing window or a new window. The choice is saved to settings
and
can be changed later via the `cli_default_open_behavior` setting.

Make this change to let `div().child(...)` support any types that have
impl `Into<SharedString>`, for example: `Cow<'static, str>`.
```rs
// From somewhere get a `Cow<'static, str>` type.
let label = Cow::Borrowed("Hello");
It's been a little that we've noticed some flickering and other weird
resizing behavior with text truncation in Zed:
https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/4d5691a3-cd3d-45e0-8b96-74a4e0e273d2https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d1d0e587-7676-4da0-8818-f4e50f0e294e
Initially, we suspected this could be due to how we calculate the length
of a line to insert truncation, which is based first on the length of
each individual character, and then second goes through a pass
calculating the line length as a whole. This could cause mismatch and
culminate in our bug.
However, even though that felt like a reasonable suspicion, I realized
something rather simple at some point: the `truncate` and
`truncate_start` methods in the `Label` didn't use `whitespace_nowrap`.
If you take Tailwind as an example, their `truncate` utility class takes
`overflow: hidden; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap;`. This
pointed out to a potential bug with `whitespace_nowrap` where that was
blocking truncation entirely, even though that's technically part of
what's necessary to truncate as you don't want text that will be
truncated to wrap.
Ultimately, what was happening was that the text element was caching its
layout based on its `wrap_width` but not considering its
`truncate_width`. The truncate width is essentially the new definitive
width of the text based on the available space, which was never being
computed. So the fix here was to add `truncate_width.is_none()` to the
cache validation check, so that it only uses the cached text element
size _if the truncation width is untouched_. But if that changes, we
need to account for the new width. Then, in the Label component, we
added `min_w_0` to allow the label div to shrink below its original
size, and finally, we added `whitespace_nowrap()` as the cache check
fundamentally fixed that method's problem.
In a future PR, we can basically remove the `single_line()` label method
because: 1) whenever you want a single label, you most likely want it to
truncate, and 2) most instances of `truncate` are already followed by
`single_line` in Zed today, so we can cut that part.
Result is no flickering with truncated labels!
This PR is an additive change introducing the `truncate_start` method to
labels, which gives us the ability to add an ellipsis at the beginning
of the text as opposed to the regular `truncate`. This will be generally
used for truncating file paths, where the end is typically more relevant
than the beginning, but given it's a general method, there's the
possibility to be used anywhere else, too.
The issues is that the closure supplied to `request_measured_layout`
could be run multiple times with differing `known_dimensions`. This in
turn will mean we truncate the font runs once, inserting a multibyte
char at the end but then in the next iteration use those truncated runs
for possible the original untruncated string which has multibyte
characters overlapping the now truncated run end resulting in a faulty
utf8 boundary index.
Solution to this is simple, truncate a clone of the runs when needed
instead of modifying the original.
This PR ensures some cursor styles do not change for draggable elements
during dragging. The linked PR covered this on the higher level for
draggable divs. However, e.g. the pane divider inbetween two editors is
not a draggable div and thus still has the issue that the cursor style
changes during dragging. This PR fixes this issue by setting the hitbox
to `None` in cases where the element is currently being dragged, which
ensures the cursor style is applied to the cursor no matter what during
dragging.
Namely, this change fixes this for
- non-div pane dividers
- minimap slider and the
- editor scrollbars
and implements it for the UI scrollbars (Notably, UI scrollbars do
already have `cursor_default` on their parent container but would not
keep this during dragging. I opted out on removing this from the parent
containers until #30194 or a similar PR is merged).
tl;dr: This adds `.block_mouse_except_scroll()` which should typically
be used instead of `.occlude()` for cases when the mouse shouldn't
interact with elements drawn below an element. The rationale for
treating scroll events differently:
* Mouse move / click / styles / tooltips are for elements the user is
interacting with directly.
* Mouse scroll events are about finding the current outer scroll
container.
Most use of `occlude` should probably be switched to this, but I figured
I'd derisk this change by minimizing behavior changes to just the 3 uses
of `block_mouse_except_scroll`.
GPUI changes:
* Added `InteractiveElement::block_mouse_except_scroll()`, and removes
`stop_mouse_events_except_scroll()`
* Added `Hitbox::should_handle_scroll()` to be used when handling scroll
wheel events.
* `Window::insert_hitbox` now takes `HitboxBehavior` instead of
`occlude: bool`.
- `false` for that bool is now `HitboxBehavior::Normal`.
- `true` for that bool is now `HitboxBehavior::BlockMouse`.
- The new mode is `HitboxBehavior::BlockMouseExceptScroll`.
* Removes `Default` impl for `HitboxId` since applications should not
manually create `HitboxId(0)`.
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/30972 brought up another
case where our context is not enough to track the actual source of the
issue: we get a general top-level error without inner error.
The reason for this was `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("failed to read HEAD
The PR finally reworks the way we use anyhow to reduce such issues (or
at least make it simpler to bubble them up later in a fix).
On top of that, uses a few more anyhow methods for better readability.
* `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("..."))`, `map_err` and other similar error
conversion/option reporting cases are replaced with `context` and
`with_context` calls
* in addition to that, various `anyhow!("failed to do ...")` are
stripped with `.context("Doing ...")` messages instead to remove the
parasitic `failed to` text
* `anyhow::ensure!` is used instead of `if ... { return Err(...); }`
calls
* `anyhow::bail!` is used instead of `return Err(anyhow!(...));`
Based on some cache details about GPUI `AnyView::cached` that I found in
the discussion of
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/24260#discussioncomment-12135749,
and combined with the optimization points found in actual applications.
This change may have some scenarios that I have not considered, so I
just make a draft to put forward my ideas first for discussion.
From my analysis, `AnyView::cached` will always invalid by Div's mouse
events, because of it called `window.refresh`. I understand that (mouse
move event) this is because the interface changes related to hover and
mouse_move will be affected style, so `window.refresh` is required.
Since Div does not have the `entity_id` of View, it is impossible to
know which View should be refreshed, so the entire window can only be
refreshed.
With this change, we can reduce a lot of `render` method calls on
ScrollWheel or Mouse Event.
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`
Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!
It's easy to overshoot the bottom of the tooltip when cursoring to a
button, such as opening the commit from a blame tooltip. Before this
change the tooltip would immediately disappear, and now it sticks around
for a bit.
Also:
* Shares the implementation with `elements/text.rs`. This will
particularly be handy when it makes use of hoverable tooltips.
* Improves the fix to #21657.
- Now the element will no longer think it has an active tooltip that it
registers with the window.
- It will instead display the next available tooltip, whereas I believe
before the next available tooltip would be suppressed.
* Fixes bug where `cx.refresh()` wasn't called when text tooltip is
hidden due to a mouse down event.
* Ports over fix in https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/14832 to
`elements/text.rs`
Release Notes:
- The tooltip for inline git blame now waits a bit before disappearing
when the mouse leaves it.
Various fixes for Zeta and one fix that's visible to non-Zeta-using
users of inline completions.
Release Notes:
- Changed inline completions (Copilot, Supermaven, ...) to not show up
in empty buffers.
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/21657
Follow-up of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/22488
Previous PR broke git blame tooltips, which are expected to be open when
hovered, even if the mouse cursor is moved away from the actual blame
entry that caused the tooltip to appear.
Current version moves the invalidation logic into `prepaint_tooltip`,
where the new data about the tooltip origin is used to ensure we
invalidate only tooltips that have no mouse cursor in either origin
bounds or tooltip bounds (if it's hoverable).
Release Notes:
- Fixed tooltips getting stuck
* Remove unnecessary WindowContext and ViewContext '_ lifetimes
* Removed some cases where WindowContext has a different name than `cx`.
This pull request replaces the static `⋯` character we used to insert
when folding a range with a custom render function that return an
`AnyElement`. We plan to use this in the assistant, but for now this
should be behavior-preserving.
