run htop or btm and you can't select terminal text with shift+drag, the
usual escape hatch does nothing.
#25143 made shift+click only ever extend a selection, never start one.
so with nothing selected there's no anchor and the drag has nothing to
grab. now it drops an anchor when there's no selection, and still
extends when there is.
added two event-level tests (harness can't sync without a window):
shift+drag under mouse tracking, which fails without the fix, and
shift+click still extending.

This fixes#56956.
The terminal link-open gesture was split between `mouse_down` and
`mouse_up`, but both halves only ran in the non-mouse-reporting path.
When a foreground app enabled terminal mouse reporting, a secondary
click on a URL or file path was forwarded to the PTY instead of opening
the link.
This changes secondary-click link handling so it checks for a hyperlink
before mouse reporting on press, and completes the matching hyperlink
open before mouse reporting on release. The event is only consumed when
the click actually lands on the same link, so normal clicks in
mouse-reporting TUIs continue to be forwarded as before.
Validation:
- `CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=1 cargo test -j1 -p terminal
test_hyperlink_ctrl_click_same_position_in_mouse_mode`
- `CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=1 cargo check -j1 -p terminal`
Release Notes:
- Improved terminal links: Cmd/Ctrl-click now opens links even when the
application has mouse reporting enabled (e.g. vim, opencode, claude).
Disable `terminal.open_links_in_mouse_mode` to forward these clicks to
the application instead.

# Objective
ACP agents (Cursor, Claude Code, Codex, etc.) start a display-only
`terminal::Terminal` for each bash tool call. After the call exits, the
terminal stays alive so that its output stays visible. But the
`alacritty` `Grid` keeps a `Storage` cache that's never reclaimed.
Across a long session this memory adds up.
Partially fixes#57099
## Solution
Added `Terminal::shrink_to_used`, called from the `Exit` branch of
`on_terminal_provider_event`. This calls `Grid::truncate()` on the
alacritty grid, shrinking the `Storage` cache portion while leaving
user-visible scrollback.
## Testing
- `cargo nextest run -p terminal
shrink_to_used_preserves_user_visible_scrollback` passes — exercises the
path with >10K rows of scrollback.
- `./script/clippy` clean.
- Manually verified: ran a noisy bash tool call via an ACP agent,
observed exit, then scrolled back through the output, no regression.

# Objective
Fix the agent `terminal` tool in headless eval environments. In the eval
sandbox, terminal commands failed before the shell ran with `IOError:
Not a tty (os error 25)` because PTY setup attempted to acquire a
controlling terminal.
## Solution
- Add a `terminal::HeadlessTerminal` global that is set by `eval_cli`
only.
- When headless mode is enabled, run terminal task commands as plain
subprocesses with piped stdout/stderr instead of opening a PTY.
- Pump subprocess output through the existing terminal emulator/event
channel so output capture, completion, and task killing keep working.
- Build ACP terminal commands non-interactively in headless mode.
- Keep the normal editor terminal path unchanged when the global is
unset.
- Handle non-PTY output edge cases by preserving split CRLF sequences
and avoiding an indefinite wait if subprocess exit-status polling
errors.

Release Notes:

headless/eval environments
# Objective
Fixes#58970.
With `terminal.copy_on_select` enabled, a left click that isn't a
deliberate selection can still overwrite the system clipboard. It
happens most often on the window-focusing click (clicking into the
terminal from another app), where the pointer jitters by a pixel or two
during the click. A perfectly motionless click is already safe (it
produces a zero-length selection and the copy is skipped), but the drag
handler treats *any* movement as the start of a selection, so a 1px
jitter creates a stray selection that `copy_on_select` then copies,
clobbering whatever was on the clipboard.
## Solution
Apply a small drag-distance threshold before a left click begins a
selection, matching the threshold gpui's `div` element already uses
(`DRAG_THRESHOLD = 2.0`). `mouse_down` records the press position, and
`mouse_drag` ignores movement below the threshold until a selection has
actually started. Once a selection is in progress it keeps extending as
before. This is the same click-vs-drag handling other terminals use
(kitty's `drag_threshold`, iTerm2).
## Testing
Added two unit tests in `crates/terminal/src/terminal.rs`:
- `test_terminal_click_jitter_does_not_start_selection` — a 1px drag
after mouse-down enqueues no `UpdateSelection` and leaves the selection
phase `Ended`.
- `test_terminal_deliberate_drag_starts_selection` — a drag well past
the threshold still starts a selection.
The first test fails on `main` (the jitter starts a selection) and
passes with this change. The rest of the `terminal` suite is green and
`script/clippy -p terminal` is clean.
I tested on Linux. The fix lives in the shared `Terminal` mouse
handling, so it's platform-independent, but I haven't manually
reproduced the macOS focusing-click scenario from the report on a Mac.

## Problem
On Linux, long-lived Zed sessions accumulate thousands of open procfs
handles (`/proc/<pid>/stat`, `/proc/<pid>/task/<tid>/stat`). A degraded
6-hour session was measured holding **9,675 FDs, 97% of them
never-closed procfs stat handles**, alongside system-wide clipboard
breakage (Wayland clipboard `send()` stretching from 13 ms to ~17 s,
which makes every other client abort the paste).
The leak comes from `PtyProcessInfo` in
`crates/terminal/src/pty_info.rs`, through three interacting sysinfo
0.37 behaviors:
1. **Hidden full-system snapshot per terminal.**
`System::new_with_specifics(RefreshKind::nothing().with_processes(…))`
immediately refreshes **all** processes. Each refreshed process gets a
`Process` entry that caches an **open `/proc/<pid>/stat` file** for the
lifetime of the entry (a documented sysinfo optimization).
2. **Task enumeration is opt-out.** `ProcessRefreshKind::nothing()`
keeps `tasks: true`, so that constructor snapshot also creates one entry
— and one open `/proc/<pid>/task/<tid>/stat` — **per thread on the
machine**, per terminal.
3. **No eviction outside the refreshed set.** The recurring refresh uses
`ProcessesToUpdate::Some(&[foreground_pid])`; sysinfo's dead-process
sweep only visits pids in that list. Every former foreground process
(one per command the user runs) therefore stays in the map forever,
pinning its FD.
sysinfo silently raises `RLIMIT_NOFILE` and budgets half of it (~262k)
for this cache, so the process never hits `EMFILE` — it just degrades.
Reproduction (standalone, sysinfo 0.37.2, Fedora 44): constructing one
`System` the way `PtyProcessInfo::new` does instantly retains **3,566
FDs**; each simulated shell command leaks one more, unbounded.
## Fix
All changes confined to `pty_info.rs`:
- `.without_tasks()` on the `ProcessRefreshKind` — eliminates the
per-thread handle class entirely.
- Replace the constructor's implicit all-process scan with
`System::new()` plus a refresh of just the spawned child, so
`kill_child_process()` still works before the first foreground refresh.
- Rebuild the `System` whenever the foreground pid changes, and refresh
`[foreground, child]` so the dead-process sweep can actually evict stale
entries. The map is now bounded at 2 entries per terminal.
With the fix, the same repro stays flat at ~6 FDs across arbitrary
command churn, and the foreground process info (name/cwd/argv for tab
titles) keeps working.
The regression test fails on `main` (3,747 retained entries on a desktop
system) and passes with the fix (≤ 2).
Note: the ~17 s clipboard `send()` on the degraded session is a coupled
symptom; the FD/process-map bloat is the verified defect fixed here. The
Wayland data-source lifecycle is tracked separately in #58446.
Release Notes:
- Fixed a file descriptor leak in terminal process tracking that
degraded long-running sessions on Linux, including system-wide clipboard
breakage ([#58651](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/58651)).

The PR makes Zed'd own `zed://` links clickable in the Zed's integrated
terminal. Previously, you had to copy and paste such links. Now you can
hover and follow the link on cmd+click:
<img width="794" height="354" alt="Screenshot 2026-06-09 at 15 25 18"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0c9be498-ba63-4a10-8852-cf2e23fa9597"
/>
</br></br>
**Use case**
A CLI tool can output a `zed://` link, e.g. to open a remote dev
environment. If Zed's terminal makes them clickable, users can open the
remote simply by clicking on the link.
More specifically, [we're adding Zed support to
dstack](https://github.com/dstackai/dstack/pull/3947). The `dstack` CLI
allows users to launch a remote dev environment with GPU. So this PR is
needed to make the UX smooth: Users run the `dstack` CLI in the local
terminal, the CLI prints the the `zed://` link, and the users can click
the link and open a new remote Zed window.
**Implementation details**
`zed://` links are routed through the OS as other links and not
internally. One downside is that dev builds may open an installed Zed
version. Made this tradeoff to keep the diff simple.

This PR does two things
1. Move PTY child spawning to the background executor. Forking to spawn
the terminal child was taking between 10-70ms on profiles I was looking
at, which caused frames to be dropped because it was on the foreground
thread. This should fix issues such as #57574 where the miniprof from
this comment showed terminal creation blocking the foreground thread as
well.
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/57574#issuecomment-4546858817
2. Stopped overwriting alacrities exit status with `9` on
`AlacTermEvent::Exit` event handling. Before we get the exit event,
alacritty emits `ChildExit(status)` with the real status, which we used
to overwrite with exit status 9 when handling the AlacTermEvent::Exit.
This was an easy fix so I added it in this PR when I noticed the bug.

I ran into this while using lazygit: the Shift navigation keys were

Capturing them makes sense in the normal terminal case, where the user

## Summary
Paths inside parentheses without a preceding space (e.g.
`Update(.claude/skills/sandbox/SKILL.md)` or `Write(/test/cool.rs)` from
Claude Code output) were not clickable in the terminal. The `(`
character was allowed as a middle character in the default path
hyperlink regex, causing the entire `Update(.path/here` to be matched as
a single invalid path.
**Changes:**
- Remove `(` from the middle-chars alternation (`[:(]` → `:`) in the
default path hyperlink regex, so `(` always acts as a path boundary —
consistent with it already being excluded from first and last character
sets. Preserves upstream's space exclusion after `:`.
- Iterate all regex matches in the line instead of only the first, so
the correct path (which may be the second match after a prefix like
`Update`) is found. This also simplifies the code by removing the
separate hovered-word search logic.
**Known tradeoff:**
Filenames with parentheses in the middle (e.g.
`docker-compose.prod(copy).yml`) are no longer matched as a single path.
This is uncommon in terminal output contexts (compiler errors, stack
traces, tool output) and is documented with a `should_panic` test.
**What doesn't break:**
- `(/path/file.js:321:13)` — `(` at word start is excluded by the
first-char rule (unchanged)
- Node.js stack traces like `at fn (/path/file.js:10:5)` — space before
`(` makes it a separate word
- All 38 terminal hyperlink tests pass
Related: #18556, #23774
Release Notes:
- Fixed terminal path detection for paths inside parentheses without
preceding space (e.g. `Update(path)` or `Write(path)` patterns from CLI
tool output)

This PR fixes test flakiness introduced in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/52111
The flakiness was because the test was using its own RNG, rather than
using gpui's built-in support for consistently-seeded RNGs in tests. The
fix was just to adjust the test to use the same logic for computing row
and column count as was introduced in the above PR.
Release Notes:
- N/A
## Context
`TerminalBounds::num_lines()` uses `floor(height / line_height)` to
compute the terminal grid row count. When the height is derived from `N
* line_height` (as it is for inline/embedded terminals in the Agent
Panel), IEEE 754 float32 arithmetic can produce `N - epsilon` instead of
`N`, causing `floor()` to return `N - 1`. This makes the terminal grid
one row too small, leaving the first line of output in invisible
scrollback (since `display_offset = 0`). The same issue applies to
`num_columns()`.
The fix adds a small tolerance (`0.01`) before flooring, which absorbs
float precision errors without affecting genuine fractional results.
Closes#51609
## How to Review
Small PR — focus on the tolerance value (`0.01`) in `num_lines()` and
`num_columns()` in `crates/terminal/src/terminal.rs`. The two new tests
(`test_num_lines_float_precision`, `test_num_columns_float_precision`)
verify the fix across 1,000+ float combinations that previously
triggered the bug.

Release Notes:
- Fixed the first line of terminal output sometimes missing in Agent
Panel terminal blocks.
## Summary
- Implements `icon_label` on `GitPanel` to return the total count of
uncommitted changes (`new_count + changes_count`) when non-zero, capped
at `"99+"` for large repos.
- Updates `PanelButtons::render()` to render that label as a small green
badge overlaid on the panel's sidebar icon, using absolute positioning
within a `div().relative()` wrapper.
- The badge uses `version_control_added` theme color and
`LabelSize::XSmall` text with `LineHeightStyle::UiLabel` for accurate
vertical centering, positioned at the top-right corner of the icon
button.
The `icon_label` method already existed on the `Panel`/`PanelHandle`
traits with a default `None` impl, and was already implemented by
`NotificationPanel` (unread notification count) and `TerminalPanel`
(open terminal count) — but was never rendered. This wires it up for all
three panels at once.
## Notes
- Badge is positioned with non-negative offsets (`top(0)`, `right(0)`)
to stay within the parent container's bounds. The status bar's
`render_left_tools()` uses `.overflow_x_hidden()`, which in GPUI clips
both axes (the `overflow_mask` returns a full content mask whenever any
axis is non-`Visible`), so negative offsets would be clipped.
- `LineHeightStyle::UiLabel` collapses line height to `relative(1.)` so
flex centering aligns the visual glyph rather than a
taller-than-necessary line box.
- No new data tracking logic — `GitPanel` already maintains `new_count`
and `changes_count` reactively.
- No feature flag or settings added per YAGNI.
## Suggested .rules additions
The following pattern came up repeatedly and would prevent future
sessions from hitting the same issue:
```
## GPUI overflow clipping
`overflow_x_hidden()` (and any single-axis overflow setter) clips **both** axes in GPUI.
The `overflow_mask()` implementation in `style.rs` returns a full `ContentMask` (bounding box)
whenever any axis is non-`Visible`. Absolute-positioned children that extend outside the element
bounds will be clipped even if only the X axis is set to Hidden.
Avoid negative `top`/`right`/`bottom`/`left` offsets on absolute children of containers
that have any overflow hidden — keep badge/overlay elements within the parent's bounds instead.
```
Release Notes:
- Added a numeric badge to the git panel sidebar icon showing the count
of uncommitted changes.

Adds `handle_drop` to Item & ItemHandle, which allows an active item in
a pane to consume drop events before the pane does.
Release Notes:
- terminal: Fix drag-and-drop not working in vertical terminal panels
The path hyperlink regex's middle-char pattern
[[:(][^0-9()]](cci:2://file:///d:/zed/crates/fs/src/fs.rs:89:0-157:1)
allowed colon+space because space was not in the exclusion set. This
caused `0: foo/bar.txt` to be matched as a single path instead of just
`foo/bar.txt`.
Fix: add space to the exclusion class: [[:(][^0-9()\\
]](cci:2://file:///d:/zed/crates/fs/src/fs.rs:89:0-157:1)

Release Notes:
- Fixed terminal Ctrl-click path detection failing when path is preceded
by a prefix like `0:` (#50531)
Follow-up to #45600.
## Summary
Fix mouse scroll reports sending only one event when scrolling down in
terminal apps with mouse mode (tmux, neovim, etc.), regardless of how
many lines were scrolled.
## The Problem
After #45600, trackpad scrolling speed was fixed. But when scrolling
**down** (negative `scroll_lines`), the terminal was still sending only
**one** scroll report per gesture, no matter how many lines the user
scrolled. Scrolling up worked correctly.
## Root Cause
In `scroll_report()` we had:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/a8043dcff8f28a0443d7ec238e7f020689ebe1ff/crates/terminal/src/mappings/mouse.rs#L96
`scroll_lines` can be negative (scroll down) or positive (scroll up).
For negative values:
| scroll_lines | max(scroll_lines, 1) | Reports sent | Verdict |
|--------------|---------------------|--------------|------|
| 3 (up) | 3 | 3 |Right
| -3 (down) | 1 | 1 |WRONG|
So we always sent exactly 1 report when scrolling down, losing the
scroll magnitude.
Use `scroll_lines.unsigned_abs()` instead of `max(scroll_lines, 1)`.
This matches how `alt_scroll()` in the same file already handles
`scroll_lines`. Now both directions send the correct number of reports.
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/a8043dcff8f28a0443d7ec238e7f020689ebe1ff/crates/terminal/src/mappings/mouse.rs#L102
## Testing
- Added unit tests: `scroll_report_repeats_for_negative_scroll_lines`
and `scroll_report_repeats_for_positive_scroll_lines`
- Manually tested scrolling in tmux and neovim with mouse mode

one scroll event when scrolling down, regardless of scroll amount
Closes#46795
This PR aims to correctly detect the hyperlinks in cases like the
following, where box-drawing characters immediately precede the path
(without spaces in between).
```
╭─[Cargo.toml:55:1]
...
╰────
```
The only false negative with the fix in this PR would be that a file
path really contains leading box drawing characters which I think is
very unlikely.

Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where the hyperlinks would not be properly detected in
the terminal if they were preceded by box-drawing characters (like ─, │,
┌, ┐)

## Summary
This PR extends the `always_allow` tool permission patterns to work with
Nushell, Elvish, and Rc shells. Previously, these shells were
incorrectly excluded because they don't use `&&`/`||` operators for
command chaining. However, brush-parser can safely parse their command
syntax since they all use `;` for sequential execution.
## Changes
- Add `ShellKind::Nushell`, `ShellKind::Elvish`, and `ShellKind::Rc` to
`supports_posix_chaining()`
- Split `ShellKind::Unknown` into `ShellKind::UnknownWindows` and
`ShellKind::UnknownUnix` to preserve platform-specific fallback behavior
while still denying `always_allow` patterns for unrecognized shells
- Add comprehensive tests for the new shell support
- Clarify documentation about shell compatibility
## Shell Notes
- **Nushell**: Uses `;` for sequential execution. The `and`/`or`
keywords are boolean operators on values, not command chaining.
- **Elvish**: Uses `;` to separate pipelines. Does not have `&&` or `||`
operators. Its `and`/`or` are special commands operating on values.
- **Rc (Plan 9)**: Uses `;` for sequential execution and `|` for piping.
Does not have `&&`/`||` operators.
## Security
Unknown shells still return `false` from `supports_posix_chaining()`, so
`always_allow` patterns are denied for safety when we can't verify the
shell's syntax.
(No release notes because granular tool permissions are still
feature-flagged.)

Closes#38168Closes#42414
We were already using `ExitStatusExt::from_raw()` to construct an
`ExitStatus`, but we were passing in the exit code from
alacritty_terminal's `ChildExit` event. This worked fine on Windows
where `from_raw()` expects an exit code, but on Unix, `from_raw()`
([read
more](https://doc.rust-lang.org/std/os/unix/process/trait.ExitStatusExt.html#tymethod.from_raw))
expects a raw wait status from `waitpid()` and not an exit code.
When a child process was killed by a signal (e.g., SIGSEGV),
`ExitStatus::code()` returns `None` since only normal exits have an exit
code. This caused the terminal to hang because we weren't properly
detecting the exit.
One fix would have been to remove the dependency on `ExitStatus`
entirely, but using the raw wait status gives us more information, we
can now detect exit codes, signal terminations, and more.
The actual fix was upstream in `alacritty_terminal` to send the raw wait
status instead of just the exit code.
Currently using forked patch
https://github.com/zed-industries/alacritty/tree/v0.16-child-exit-patch
which is based on v0.25.1.
