Stacked on top of #54112
This is part 2 of 3 towards #51197
More details from the original PR #53551
This PR includes the changes from #54112 , im not sure how to avoid
that, my understanding is that after that one is merged, this PR can be
rebased onto main and everything will be correct. You can also view the
version of this that does reflect the changes more directly here:
https://github.com/feitreim/zed/pull/1
## Changes
In this PR I added a more general string matching functionality to
`fuzzy_nucleo`, in order to have proper testing for this, I also changed
the command palette, tab switching picker, branch picker, and recent
projects picker to use this new implementation. I think the command
palette change in particular is awesome, just super nice to vaguely
gesture at the command i want and have it pop right up.
The main change here and departure from
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/37123 is realizing that the
primary reason for the regressions is actually how nucleo handles smart
case, the old `fuzzy` crate only uses the smart case argument to score
things differently, while nucleo actually filters on the case, eg. with
smart case query "Apple" wouldnt match "apple". To get around this we
always pass `CaseMatching::Ignore` to nucleo and implement the same
score modifications from fuzzy in our code.
There is a performance cost to that, of course, but from my testing it
is fairly static, not growing as the size increases, so maybe a query
takes 35 µs instead of 25 µs, but a query that takes 800 µs will only
take 820 µs.
Benchmark:
| kind | query | size | nucleo | fuzzy | nucleo/fuzzy |
|---|---|---:|---:|---:|---:|
| string | 1-word | 100 | 9.15 µs | 24.6 µs | 0.37× |
| string | 1-word | 1000 | 150.2 µs | 207.2 µs | 0.72× |
| string | 1-word | 10000 | 1.34 ms | 2.07 ms | 0.65× |
| string | 2-word | 100 | 5.16 µs | 2.94 µs | 1.75× |
| string | 2-word | 1000 | 29.0 µs | 11.0 µs | 2.63× |
| string | 2-word | 10000 | 210.6 µs | 55.5 µs | 3.79× |
| string | 4-word | 100 | 2.57 µs | 2.33 µs | 1.10× |
| string | 4-word | 1000 | 6.98 µs | 5.85 µs | 1.19× |
| string | 4-word | 10000 | 20.0 µs | 12.0 µs | 1.66× |
When I added the 4-word queries to the benchmarks I was actually really
concerned that the performance would be awful, making it unsuitable for
the command palette especially. However, I think due to the CharBag
pre-filtering when the query is longer, the performance is actually way
better than the 2 word case.

This PR makes Zed only have one worktree picker, as opposed to a flavor
of it in the title bar and another in the agent panel. It then moves it
to the title bar, making it always present, so that its trigger is
separate from the branch picker (which now contains only two views:
branches and stashes). For the worktree picker, I'm mostly favoring the
behavior we've introduced in the agent-panel-flavored version.
It also updates the title bar settings migration to use the JSON
`migrate_settings` helper instead of a shallow Tree-sitter rewrite, so
old `show_branch_icon = true` values are promoted to
`show_branch_status_icon = true` across root, platform, release-channel,
and profile settings scopes.
- [x] Move worktree creation logic to the `git_ui` crate to make this
more generic and less agent-specific
- [x] Double-check the remote use case and ensure nothing broke there
- [x] Improve the UX for the detached HEAD state; better invite people
to create a branch
- [x] Migrate `show_branch_icon = true` to `show_branch_status_icon =
true` across nested settings scopes
Suggested .rules additions
When migrating renamed settings keys that can appear in platform
overrides, release-channel overrides, or profiles, prefer the JSON
`migrations::migrate_settings` helper over shallow Tree-sitter key
rewrites unless tests explicitly cover every nested scope that can
contain the key.
Release Notes:
- Improved migration of the title bar branch status icon setting.

# UI
## Adding/Removing bookmarks
To add a bookmark:
- run the toggle bookmark action
- hold secondary and click in the gutter
- open the context menu by right clicking in the gutter and select add
bookmark To remove a bookmark:
- run the toggle bookmark action
- click on the bookmarks icon in the gutter
- open the context menu by right clicking in the gutter and select
remove bookmark
remove all bookmarks with `workspace: clear bookmarks`
# Implementation
This mirrors the implementation of breakpoints. The rendering of the
gutter was refactored to make place for bookmark icons and buttons:
- Code was extracted to a `Gutter` struct
- Runnables, breakpoints and bookmarks are now collected ahead of
layouting. Just before layouting we remove the items that collide and do
not have priority.
- The `phantom_breakpoint` is replaced by a `gutter_hover_button`
## In depth phantom breakpoint discussion:
This was phantom_breakpoint. It worked as follows:
- A fake breakpoint was added to the list of breakpoints.
- While rendering the breakpoints it a breakpoint turned out to be fake
it would get a different description and look.
- The breakpoint list was edited run_indicators ("play buttons")
rendering to removes the fake breakpoint if it collided.
This would not scale to more functionality. Now we only render
breakpoints, bookmarks and run indicators. Then we render a button if
there is not breakpoint, bookmark or run indicator already present. We
can do so since the rendering of such "gutter indicators" has been
refactored into two phases:
- collect the items.
- render them if no higher priority item collides.
This is far easier and more readable which enabled me to easily take the
phantom_breakpoint system and use it for placing bookmarks as well :)
Note: this was previously merged but it needed a better squashed commit
message. For the actual PR see: 51404. This reverts commit
1c3846e76f.

- Added Bookmarks
Co-authored-by: Austin Cummings <me@austincummings.com>
Closes#4526
Adds basic bookmark functionality to the editor, allowing users to mark
lines and later navigate between them.
### What's new
**Toggling bookmarks**
Users can toggle a bookmark on the current line(s) via the `editor:
toggle bookmark` action. A bookmark icon appears in the gutter for each
bookmarked line.
**Navigation**
Two new actions, `editor: go to next bookmark` and `editor: go to
previous bookmark`, navigate between bookmarks in the current buffer,
wrapping around at the ends of the buffer.
**Viewing all bookmarks**
`editor: view bookmarks` opens all bookmarks across the project in a
multibuffer, similar to how references and diagnostics are surfaced.
**Clearing bookmarks**
`workspace: clear bookmarks` removes all bookmarks in the current
project.
**Persistence**
Bookmarks are persisted to the workspace database and restored when the
workspace is reopened. They are stored as `(path, row)` pairs and
resolved back to text anchors. Out of range or unresolvable bookmarks
are skipped with a logged warning.
**Gutter rendering**
Bookmark icons are rendered in the gutter using the existing gutter
button layout system, consistent with breakpoints. They are suppressed
on lines that already show a breakpoint or phantom breakpoint indicator.
A new `gutter.bookmarks` setting (defaulting to `true`) controls their
visibility.
### What's left
- [x] Lazily load buffers that have bookmarks
- [x] Clean up test boilerplate
- [ ] Assign default keybindings
- [ ] Compare line of saved bookmarks with current buffer (gray out the
"stale" bookmarks)
### What's next (and nice to haves)
- [ ] Resilience against external edits
- [ ] Save column position with the bookmark
- [ ] Bookmarks attached to syntactic structures?
- [ ] Labeled bookmarks?
---
Release Notes:
- Added bookmarks: toggle bookmarks on lines with `editor: toggle
bookmark`, navigate with `editor: go to next bookmark` / `editor: go to
previous bookmark`, view all bookmarks with `editor: view bookmarks`,
and clear with `workspace: clear bookmarks`. Bookmarks are shown in the
gutter and persisted across sessions.

Reimplements #36722 while fixing the race that required the revert in
#36932.
When no default model is configured, this picks an environment fallback
by authenticating all providers. It always prefers the Zed cloud
provider when it's authenticated, and waits for its models to load
before picking another provider as the fallback, so we don't flicker
from Zed models to Anthropic while sign-in is in flight.
The fallback is recomputed whenever provider state changes (via
`ProviderStateChanged`/`AddedProvider`/`RemovedProvider` events), so the
selection becomes correct as soon as cloud models arrive.
### What changed vs. the original PR
- `language_models::init` now owns `authenticate_all_providers`
(previously done in `LanguageModelPickerDelegate` and `agent`'s
`LanguageModels`).
- After all authentications settle, and on any subsequent provider state
change, `update_environment_fallback_model` recomputes the fallback.
- The fallback logic prefers Zed cloud: if the cloud provider is
authenticated, only use it (waiting for its models to load). Otherwise,
fall through to the first authenticated provider with a default or
recommended model.
- `LanguageModelRegistry::default_model()` falls back to
`environment_fallback_model` when no explicit default is set.
- Existing `Thread`s that are empty are updated to the new default when
`DefaultModelChanged` fires, so a blank thread started before sign-in
switches to Zed models once the user signs in.

This PR greatly improves our handling of remote threads in the sidebar.
One primary issue was that many parts of the sidebar were only looking

fix here is to use `ProjectGroupKey` more consistently throughout the

This PR adjust the name of the worktree within the agent panel: we
display `main` if you're in the main worktree and then the worktree name
when in a linked one. Additionally, I also took the opportunity to fix
something that confused me in the general worktree picker: for the list
item that represented the main worktree, we were using the current
checked out branch name for that item's name. I think that's a bit
incorrect, given the _name_ of that worktree isn't the name of the
branch you have active at that moment. For now, I'm using simply `main`
as the worktree name. Lastly, also added a little blue check icon in the
worktree _and branch_ picker to highlight which worktree/branch is
currently active.

don't have to depend on `gpui`.
- Removes some unnecessary `&'static str` | `SharedString` -> `String`

Follow up to https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/49807
Previously, when there were multiple conflicts across the codebase, we
would pop a toast at the bottom right corner of the UI. A toast seemed
like a functional idea because it'd be visible from any state of the app
and thus it'd be a good place to expose the button that allows you to
quickly prompt the agent to resolve all conflicts, as opposed to
creating a thread for each individual one. However, the toast was met
with some negative (and correct) feedback, mostly because it is
interruptive, and thus can sometimes block very relevant surfaces, like
either the agent panel itself or the Git commit area.
Therefore, in this PR, I'm removing the toast and adding a button in the
status bar instead; a bit more minimal, not interruptive, and a common
place for other items that might require your attention. The status bar
can be quite busy these days, though; we can display diagnostics, LSP
status, and file names in there; conscious of that. But it felt like it
could work given this button is such a transient one that you can either
easily manually dismiss or wait for it to be auto-dismissed as you or
the agent resolves the merge conflicts.

## Context
### Background
Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:
- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer
### Purpose of this PR
This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.
The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn buffer_anchor_to_anchor(&self, anchor: text::Anchor) -> Option<multi_buffer::Anchor>;
}
```
And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.
There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.
### Other changes
There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:
- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):
```
enum Anchor {
Min,
Excerpt {
text_anchor: text::Anchor,
path_key_index: PathKeyIndex,
diff_base_anchor: Option<text::Anchor>,
},
Max,
}
```
That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were
doing that were buggy for min/max! Instead, we have a new API that
correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn anchor_to_buffer_anchor(&self, anchor: multi_buffer::Anchor) -> Option<text::Anchor>;
}
```
- `MultiBufferExcerpt` has been removed in favor of a new
`map_excerpt_ranges` API directly on `MultiBufferSnapshot`.

This PR changes the API for the `ListItem`'s `end_hover` slot so that
whatever is in there is always part of the flex stack, as opposed to an
absolutely-positioned element. Additionally, I'm also improving the API
for swapping content between the default state and the hovered state
(e.g., list items where by default we render X, but when you hover, we
show something else). Lastly, I'm adding buttons to some Git picker
items that were only previously available through modal footer buttons.

Context
The git panel's context menu caused visual jitter (flickering/jumping)
when opened via right-click on a tracked file. The root cause was in
`dispatch_context()`: it used `self.focus_handle == focused` to check if
the panel itself was directly focused, but when a context menu opened,
focus moved to the menu (a child element), causing the `"menu"` and
`"ChangesList"` key contexts to be dropped. This triggered a re-render
with different keybindings, which re-added them, creating a loop of
jitter.
The fix replaces the direct focus equality check with
`self.focus_handle.contains_focused(window, cx)`, which returns `true`
when any child element (including the context menu) holds focus within
the panel's focus tree. This is consistent with how other panels
(project panel, outline panel, collab panel) handle focus-based dispatch
contexts.
Closes#51813

**After fix:**
https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/94c936d2-1e81-4d28-a86a-8b1ed76ddde1
## How to Review
This is a small, focused change in a single file:
`crates/git_ui/src/git_panel.rs`.
1. **The fix** (~line 974): `dispatch_context()` method — the old code
checked direct focus equality (`self.focus_handle == focused`), the new
code uses `self.focus_handle.contains_focused(window, cx)` and
restructures the conditionals so `CommitEditor` is checked first via
`if/else if`.
2. **The test** (~line 7871): `test_dispatch_context_with_focus_states`
— verifies 4 focus state transitions: commit editor focused, changes
list focused, back to commit editor, and back to changes list. Each case
asserts the correct key contexts are present/absent.

Release Notes:
- Fixed git panel context menu jitter caused by keybinding dispatch
context flickering when right-clicking on tracked files (#51813)
## Context
When `git_panel.status_style` is set to `label_color`, the git panel
should indicate file status through text color only, without showing
status icons. However, the icons were still being rendered regardless
of this setting.
The root cause: `git_status_icon(status)` was called unconditionally
in `render_status_entry`, with no check against the current
`status_style` value.
Closes#51714
## How to Review
Single change in `crates/git_ui/src/git_panel.rs` —
`render_status_entry` function. The icon render call is now wrapped
in `.when(status_style != StatusStyle::LabelColor, ...)`.
Release Notes:
- Fixed git panel status icons still showing when
`git_panel.status_style`
is set to `label_color`

#### Context
Switches `TextDiffView` from using `Editor` directly to
`SplittableEditor`, enabling side-by-side diff view support for "Diff
Clipboard with Selection". The diff view now respects the user's
`diff_view_style` setting.
Split out from #51457. This PR contains only the `SplittableEditor`
wiring. The multibuffer coordinate fix for non-singleton editors will
follow in a separate PR.
Closes#50912 (partially)
#### How to Review
Small PR — all changes are in `crates/git_ui/src/text_diff_view.rs`.
Focus on:
- `new()`: `SplittableEditor::new` replaces `Editor::for_multibuffer`,
editor-specific setup goes through `rhs_editor()`
- Item trait delegation: `act_as_type`, `for_each_project_item`,
`set_nav_history` updated for `SplittableEditor`
- Tests: pinned `DiffViewStyle::Unified` and assertions go through
`rhs_editor()`

## Context
Fixes the visual selection update in `TextDiffView::open` to properly
convert between buffer-local and multibuffer coordinates using
`buffer_point_to_anchor`. Previously, raw multibuffer Points were used
directly for line expansion, which produced incorrect regions when
expanded deleted diff hunks shifted multibuffer row numbers.
This provides a single unified code path for both singleton and
non-singleton multibuffers, as suggested in [#51457 review
feedback](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51457#issuecomment-4091134303).
Follow-up to #51457.
## How to Review
Small PR - all changes are in `crates/git_ui/src/text_diff_view.rs`.
Focus on:
- `open()`: The visual selection update block now uses
`buffer_point_to_anchor` + `to_point` instead of raw multibuffer
coordinate math
- No more assumption that multibuffer Points == buffer-local Points
- Existing tests validate both singleton and non-singleton multibuffer
paths

Release Notes:
- Fixed incorrect diff region when using "Diff Clipboard with Selection"
with expanded diff hunks in the editor.
When a git worktree is in a detached HEAD state (e.g. after `git
checkout --detach`), the workspace for that worktree would disappear
from the sidebar UI, and if the workspace was currently open your UI
would just disappear.
This happened because `parse_worktrees_from_str` silently dropped any
worktree entries without a `branch` line in the porcelain output, which
cascaded through the `linked_worktrees` list and caused
`prune_stale_worktree_workspaces` to remove the workspace.
This PR:
- Makes `Worktree::ref_name` an `Option<SharedString>` so detached
worktrees can be represented
- Renames `Worktree::branch()` to `Worktree::display_name()`, which
returns the branch name when available or the short SHA as a fallback
(mirroring how the title bar already handles detached HEAD for
repositories)
- Updates `parse_worktrees_from_str` to include detached and bare
worktree entries instead of dropping them
- Filters detached worktrees out of the worktree picker UI, preserving
the existing product decision to only show branch-based worktrees there
