Richard Feldman ed12d6de40 Increase SQLite busy_timeout from 1ms to 500ms (#49039)
When two Zed instances share the same data directory (e.g. a release
build and a dev build running simultaneously), SQLite operations can
fail with "database is locked" (error code 5), surfacing as a "Failed to
Launch" error in the agent panel.

The root cause is `PRAGMA busy_timeout=1` in `crates/db/src/db.rs`,
which gives SQLite only 1ms to wait for a write lock before giving up.
With WAL mode, the actual lock hold times are microseconds — the problem
isn't long-held locks, it's that we give up before even trying to wait.
During startup, both instances hit the DB heavily for workspace
restoration, so even tiny overlaps fail.

This changes `busy_timeout` from 1ms to 500ms, giving SQLite more room
to retry without (hopefully) any perceptible delay to the user.

Closes AI-20

Kirill Bulatov 65fbcffa5a Avoid unnecessary DB writes (#29417)
Part of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/16472

* Adds debug logging to everywhere near INSERT/UPDATEs in the DB

So something like
`env RUST_LOG=debug,wasmtime_cranelift=off,cranelift_codegen=off,vte=off
cargo run` could be used to view these (current zlog seems to process
the exclusions odd, so not sure this is the optimal RUST_LOG line) can
be used to debug any further writes.

* Removes excessive window stack serialization

Previously, it serialized unconditionally every 100ms.
Now, only if the stack had changed, which is now check every 500ms.

* Removes excessive terminal serialization

Previously, it serialized its `cwd` on every `ItemEvent::UpdateTab`
which was caused by e.g. any character output.
Now, only if the `cwd` has changed at the next event processing time.

Release Notes:

- Fixed more excessive DB writes

57ebc7334d Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

### issues post merge

- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures
- [x] Mac build issue

Joseph T. Lyons c2577693e6 Add system_id (#18040)
This PR adds `system_id` to telemetry, which is contained within a new
`global` database (accessible by any release channel of Zed on a single
system). This will help us get a more accurate understanding of user
count, instead of relying on `installationd_id`, which is different per
release channel. This doesn't solve the problem of a user with multiple
machines, but it gets us closer.

This PR extracts the definition of the various Zed paths out of `util`
and into a new `paths` crate.

`util` is for generic utils, while these paths are Zed-specific. For
instance, `gpui` depends on `util`, and it shouldn't have knowledge of
these paths, since they are only used by Zed.

Max BrunsfeldandMarshall 4debf956b6 Fix issues with extension API that come up when moving Svelte into an extension (#9611)
We're doing it. Svelte support is moving into an extension. This PR
fixes some issues that came up along the way.

Notes

* extensions need to be able to retrieve the path the `node` binary
installed by Zed
* previously we were silently swallowing any errors that occurred while
loading a grammar
* npm commands ran by extensions weren't run in the right directory
* Tree-sitter's WASM stdlib didn't support a C function (`strncmp`)
needed by the Svelte parser's external scanner
* the way that LSP installation status was reported was unnecessarily
complex

Release Notes:

- Removed built-in support for the Svelte and Gleam languages, because
full support for those languages is now available via extensions. These
extensions will be suggested for download when you open a `.svelte` or
`.gleam` file.

Marshall Bowers 1af163fd01 Remove unneeded 'static lifetimes on &strs in constants (#8698)
This PR removes unneeded `'static` lifetimes on `&str`s stored in
`const` declarations.

This addresses some Clippy lints about
[`redundant_static_lifetimes`](https://rust-lang.github.io/rust-clippy/master/index.html#/redundant_static_lifetimes).

In item-level `const` declarations we can rely on lifetime elision and
use the default `'static` lifetime.

Note that associated constants still require an explicit `'static`
lifetime, as explained in
https://github.com/rust-lang/rust/issues/115010.
