Richard Feldman c5ade1fa71 Add sidebar status icons for agent thread states (#49505)
<img width="800" height="1200" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/2b765edc-4be4-476e-891a-9dd81fac2626"
/>

Add icon decorations on the agent icon in the sidebar to show thread
status:

- **Generation done**: blue dot (existing behavior, unchanged)
- **Blocked on tool permission/confirmation**: yellow warning triangle
- **Thread stopped due to an error**: red X

Priority order for decorations: confirmation > error > done > running
spinner.

Confirmation and error decorations persist as long as the thread is
actually in that state and always show regardless of whether the
workspace is active (unlike the blue dot which is notification-based).

Danilo Leal 74dbf4b638 Remove older onboarding modals (#49484)
This PR removes onboarding modals for features that were announced, at
this point, a long time ago: Git v1, Debugger, and Agent Panel v1. This
cleans up the actions list a bit when you search for "onboarding". I
left the ACP and Claude Code ones, though; they were the two more recent
ones, but we should be able to remove them soon enough, too.

Sathiyaraman MandDanilo Leal bbc886e18d copilot: Display cost multiplier for Github Copilot models (#44800)
### Description

Display cost multiplier for GitHub Copilot models in the model selectors
(Both in Chat Panel and Inline Assistant)

<img width="436" height="800" alt="image"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c9ebd8fa-4d55-4be8-b3e1-f46dbf1f0145"
/>

### Some technical notes

Although this PR's primary intent is to show the cost multiplier for
GitHub Copilot models alone, I have included some necessary plumbing to
allow specifying costs for other providers in future. I have introduced
an enum called `LanguageModelCostInfo` for showing cost in different
ways for different models. Now, this enum is used in `LanguageModel`
trait to get the cost info.

For now to begin with, in `LanguageModelCostInfo`, I have specified two
ways of pricing: Request-based (1 Agent request - GitHub Copilot uses
this) and Token-based (1M Input tokens / 1M Output tokens). I had
initially thought about adding a `Free` type, especially for Ollama but
didn't do it after realizing that Ollama has paid plans. Right now, only
the Request-based pricing is implemented and used for Copilot models.

Feel free to suggest changes on how to improve this design better.

Danilo Leal f4d07667ae agent_ui: Use circular progress component for displaying context window use (#49138)
This PR uses the recently introduced `CircularProgress` component to
display context window use information. It creates more space for the
message editor controls as well as simplifies the UI a little bit.
Through a tooltip, we communicate the same things we communicated before
(and more, actually, because rules use will be displayed there, too).
Note that this doesn't touch the display of split token use (for models
like GPT and whatnot).

Richard Feldman d123bb4c8d Remove Agents Panel and utility panes (#49038)
Remove the `AgentsPanel` (from the `agent_ui_v2` crate) and the utility
pane infrastructure from the codebase.

The Agents Panel was a separate panel gated behind the `agent-v2`
feature flag that was redundant with the existing Agent Panel. Utility
panes were a layout concept (secondary panes next to the editor,
separate from dock panels) whose only consumer was `AgentThreadPane` in
the Agents Panel.

### Changes
- Deleted the entire `agent_ui_v2` crate (`agents_panel.rs`,
`agent_thread_pane.rs`)
- Deleted `workspace/src/utility_pane.rs`
- Removed `UtilityPane`, `UtilityPaneHandle`, `UtilityPanePosition`,
`MinimizePane`, `ClosePane` from `workspace/src/dock.rs`
- Removed all utility pane fields, methods, and render blocks from
`workspace.rs`
- Removed all aside toggle code from `pane.rs` and `pane_group.rs`
- Removed `agents_panel_dock` setting from agent settings and
`default.json`
- Removed all `agent_ui_v2` references from `main.rs`, `zed.rs`, and
Cargo.toml files
- Cleaned up test code in `tool_permissions.rs` and `agent_ui.rs`

Danilo LealandConrad Irwin 1725812ba7 workspace: Move the update Zed button to the title bar (#48467)
Currently, whenever Zed has a new version available for download, the
update button shows up in the status bar. Problem is: that status bar
slot can also display other buttons/information, such as problems with
your language server or general errors. In case the two things exist (a
problem and a new version), just one of them would be displayed, which
is not great; you should be able to see both. Additionally, given we
ship new versions pretty often, I've frequently saw feedback about
wanting to hide away the new version button... at least temporarily
while there's no immediate interest in upgrading.

So, this PR tackles all of that. The button to update a new version is
moved up to the title bar, nearby your avatar, and you have the ability
to dismiss, which effectively just moves the button from the title bar
to inside your user menu.

Richard FeldmanandDanilo Leal e2e49afb4e Tool permissions settings UI improvements (#48796)
Various improvements to settings UI for granular tool permissions,
extracted from a larger change:

- Add **copy_path** tool to the permissions configuration list
- Replace local `RuleType` enum with `ToolPermissionMode` from the
settings crate
- Improve rule summary display: singular "1 rule" instead of always "1
rules", show invalid pattern count
- Add **terminal command parsing preview** — uses `extract_commands` to
split chained commands (`&&`, `||`, `;`) so the preview matches the real
permission engine's behavior
- Add **verdict label** showing the authoritative permission decision
(Allow/Deny/Confirm)
- Log disagreements between the pattern preview and the engine's
authoritative verdict
- Display **invalid regex patterns section** with compilation error
details
- Add regex validation error banner (dismissible) on tool config pages
- Add **compile-time validated** `tool_index` for macro-generated render
functions (fails to compile if a tool ID is misspelled)
- Update move_path/copy_path regex explanations for multi-input tools
- Add test validating all tools have `ToolInfo` entries or are in the
exclusion list
- Add `clear_on_confirm()` — clears the input after confirming (used for
"add pattern" inputs)
- Add editor reconciliation fix — when settings change externally (e.g.
editing settings.json), syncs the cached editor text when not focused
- Rename "Configure Tool Rules" → "Tool Permissions" in the settings
sidebar
- Update description text
- Add `regex_validation_error` field to `SettingsWindow` (cleared on
page navigation)

flag.)

Release Notes:

Refactored:
- Use [flake-parts](https://flake.parts/index.html) modules
- `nix/shell.nix` -> `nix/modules/devshells.nix`

Added:
- Use
[flake-parts.partitions](https://flake.parts/options/flake-parts-partitions.html)
to isolate dev dependencies so that flakes that use `zed-editor` don't
fetch dev-only inputs such as `treefmt-nix`
- [treefmt-nix](https://github.com/numtide/treefmt-nix)
  - nixfmt
  - rustfmt

Fixed:
- `shell.nix` and `default.nix` fetching `flake-compat` from
`flake.lock` which added an extra and unnecessary input/dependency to
`flake.nix`. Fixed by setting a fixed rev and sha256 instead.
- `nixfmt-rfc-style` is deprecated and is now `nixfmt`
- Fixes #45338 by using rust-overlay toolchain directly
  - Previously, the devShell included `rustup` which caused slow startup
times as Nix would build rustup from source (including running its test
suite). Additionally, rust tooling (cargo, rustfmt, clippy,
rust-analyzer) wasn't available in the dev shell.
- cargo, rustc, and rust-toolchain.toml components included in
`rustToolchain`

Chore:
- Update `flake.lock`
- Format Rust code with `rustfmt` via `treefmt-nix`

c51f7b8a66 git: Add graph support (#44434)
Closes #26866

### Summary
Adds a git graph to Zed, accessible via the `git_graph::Open` action if
a project has an active repository. There's still more to do, but this
is a solid foundation to expand upon. The code structure is in line with
Zed's codebase and shouldn't require architectural changes to add
missing features.

The git graph can be opened via the command palette (`git graph: open`)
or by binding a key to `git_graph::Open`. It's available when the
project has an active git repository.

### Architecture

Similar to the Debugger, the git graph is split between a data layer and
a view/UI layer. When the view layer is rendering, it queries the data
layer for its active state. This setup allows the data layer to lazily
request graph data (only when needed for rendering), abstracts collab
from the view layer, allows most of the data loading to happen on a
background thread, and makes caching easy to implement.

#### Graph Loading

The graph data is loaded in two phases:
1. `Repository::graph_data()` streams commit structure (SHA, parents,
refs) in chunks of 1000 via `git log`
2. `CommitDataReader` lazily fetches full commit details (author,
timestamp, subject) on-demand using a persistent `git cat-file --batch`
process

This two-phase approach makes the initial loading of the graph as fast
as possible, because `git log` takes significantly longer when all the
needed graph data is queried through it. Zed then lazily loads commits
in the user's viewport through `cat-file --batch`. This makes scrolling
to any place in the graph extremely snappy and benefits the
collaborative architecture by only fetching data needed to render the
graph. It also allows Zed to share commit data between different graph
visualizations (e.g., date order vs. topological order).

#### Performance

Tested on both the Zed and LLVM repositories with good performance in
both cases. The two-phase loading approach and lazy fetching keep the UI
responsive even with large commit histories.

#### Testing

I added property testing that builds randomized commit graphs and
verifies that the graph is constructed correctly. This also works as an
integration test and will be expanded in the future to test collab graph
visualization, graph filtering, commit actions, etc.

### New Crate
- `git_graph` (GPL-licensed) — contains UI and graph computation logic

### Not Yet Implemented
- Remote repository support (collab)
- Filtering by branch
- Commit actions (checkout, cherry-pick, etc.)
- Search
- Open commit view for selected commit
- Resizable columns
- Column filtering

Context menus close when the window becomes inactive (e.g., clicking to

This aligns Zed's context menu behavior with native macOS apps, where

This PR introduces a project dropdown when working with multiple
folders/projects in one workspace. Here are some interaction details
that I hope improves the UX of working on this scenario significantly:

- The dropdown shows the currently "active" project, which is determined
by:
  - Either the file you're currently editing
  - Or the file you have just recently switched to
  - Some example cases:
- If you are focused on file from project A but switch to project B in
the titlebar, nothing happens. However, as soon as you type on the file
from project A, the title bar will update and your active project will
return to being project A.
- If you're focused on file from project A and change tabs to a file
from project B, the title bar will update, showing project B as the
active one.
- The content you'll see in the branch picker will correspond to the
currently active project
- It's still possible to reach the "Recent Projects" picker through the
project dropdown
- It's possible to do all interactions (trigger dropdown, select active
project, and remove project from workspace) with the keyboard

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/e2346757-74df-47c5-bf4d-6354623b6f47

Note that this entire UX is valid only for a multiple folder workspace
scenario; nothing changes for the single project case.

This PR removes the const generics limitation from the data table
component, enabling tables with a dynamic number of columns determined
at runtime.

**Context:**
This is the next infrastructure step split out from the [original CSV
preview draft PR](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/44344). The
draft PR remains open as a reference and will continue to be decomposed
into smaller, reviewable pieces.

**Details:**
- Introduces a `TableRow` newtype to enforce column count invariants at
runtime, replacing the previous const generic approach. It's api surface
is larger than is currently used, as it's planned to be used in CSV
feature itself.
- Refactors the data table and all usages (including the keymap editor)
to work with runtime column counts.
- This change is foundational for supporting CSV preview and other
features that require flexible, dynamic tables.
- Performance impact has not been formally measured, but there is no
noticeable slowdown in practice.

Oleksandr Kholiavko f6f1c64a40 Add variable row height mode to table UI element (#46190)
## Add variable row height mode to data table infrastructure

This PR introduces support for variable row heights in the data table
component, laying the groundwork for more flexible tabular data
rendering in Zed.

**Context:**
This is the first in a series of infrastructure-focused PRs split out
from the [original CSV preview draft
PR](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/44344). The draft PR
remains open as a reference and will be incrementally decomposed into
smaller, reviewable pieces like this one.

**Details:**
- Adds a variable row height mode to the data table, enabling future
features that require rows of differing heights (such as CSV preview
and, eventually, database table views).
- No user-facing changes; this is an internal refactor to support
upcoming functionality.

**Thanks:**
Big thanks to @Anthony-Eid for pairing sessions and guidance on how to
best structure and land these changes incrementally.

Danilo Leal e0fb1843ff ui: Make docs aside in pickers and context menu render centered to its trigger (#45868)
This has been something we've wanted to do for a long time since docs
aside thus far have been hard-anchored either at the top or bottom of
the container that their trigger is sitting in. This PR introduces the
change so that they're centered with their trigger, regardless of
whether it's on a context menu or picker, by including a canvas element
in both the container and the trigger to calculate where the docs aside
should precisely sit on. Here's the result:

Note that at the moment, docs aside are only visible through _hovering_,
and ideally, they should be available on both hover and selection
(keyboard nav). But I'll leave that for later.

There were several places adding a copy icon button, so thought of
encapsulating the logic to copy a given string into the clipboard (and
other small details like swapping the icon and tooltip if copied) into a

Danilo LealandLukas Wirth 505a2b42be gpui: Fix truncation flickering (#45373)
It's been a little that we've noticed some flickering and other weird
resizing behavior with text truncation in Zed:

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/4d5691a3-cd3d-45e0-8b96-74a4e0e273d2

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/d1d0e587-7676-4da0-8818-f4e50f0e294e

Initially, we suspected this could be due to how we calculate the length
of a line to insert truncation, which is based first on the length of
each individual character, and then second goes through a pass
calculating the line length as a whole. This could cause mismatch and
culminate in our bug.

However, even though that felt like a reasonable suspicion, I realized
something rather simple at some point: the `truncate` and
`truncate_start` methods in the `Label` didn't use `whitespace_nowrap`.
If you take Tailwind as an example, their `truncate` utility class takes
`overflow: hidden; text-overflow: ellipsis; white-space: nowrap;`. This
pointed out to a potential bug with `whitespace_nowrap` where that was
blocking truncation entirely, even though that's technically part of
what's necessary to truncate as you don't want text that will be
truncated to wrap.

Ultimately, what was happening was that the text element was caching its
layout based on its `wrap_width` but not considering its
`truncate_width`. The truncate width is essentially the new definitive
width of the text based on the available space, which was never being
computed. So the fix here was to add `truncate_width.is_none()` to the
cache validation check, so that it only uses the cached text element
size _if the truncation width is untouched_. But if that changes, we
need to account for the new width. Then, in the Label component, we
added `min_w_0` to allow the label div to shrink below its original
size, and finally, we added `whitespace_nowrap()` as the cache check
fundamentally fixed that method's problem.

In a future PR, we can basically remove the `single_line()` label method
because: 1) whenever you want a single label, you most likely want it to
truncate, and 2) most instances of `truncate` are already followed by
`single_line` in Zed today, so we can cut that part.

Result is no flickering with truncated labels!

Danilo LealandLukas Wirth faa187f97d gpui: Add text_ellipsis_start method (#45122)
This PR is an additive change introducing the `truncate_start` method to
labels, which gives us the ability to add an ellipsis at the beginning
of the text as opposed to the regular `truncate`. This will be generally
used for truncating file paths, where the end is typically more relevant
than the beginning, but given it's a general method, there's the
possibility to be used anywhere else, too.

Joseph T. Lyonsandfactory-droid[bot] 188a2575ee Add language server version in a tooltip on language server hover (#45302)
I wanted a way to make it easy to figure out which version of a language
server Zed is running. Now, you get a tooltip when hovering on a
language server in the Language Servers popover.

<img width="498" height="168" alt="SCR-20251218-ovln"

/>

This PR also fixes a bug. We had existing code to open a tooltip on
these language server entrees and display the language server message,
which was never fully wired up for `CustomEntry`s. Now, in this PR, we
will show show either version, message, or both, in the documentation
aside, depending on what the server has given us.

Mostly done with Droid (using GPT-5.2), with manual review and multiple
follow ups to guide it into using existing patterns in the codebase,
when it did something abnormal.

bd9a26e540 thread_view: Clearer authentication states (#45230)
Closes #44717

Sometimes, we show the user the agent's auth methods because we got an
AuthRequired error.

However, there are also several ways a user can choose to re-enter the
authentication flow even though they are still logged in.

This has caused some confusion with several users, where after logging
in, they type /login again to see if anything changed, and they saw an
"Authentication Required" warning.

So, I made a distinction in the UI if we go to this flow from a concrete
error, or if not, made the language less error-like to help avoid
confusion.

1ca705dcfb Fix stale pending keybinding indicators on focus change (#44678)
Closes #ISSUE

Problem:

- The status bar’s pending keystroke indicator (shown next to --NORMAL--
in Vim mode) didn’t clear when focus moved to another context, e.g.
hitting g in the editor then clicking the Git panel. The keymap state
correctly canceled the prefix, but observers that render the indicator
never received a “pending input changed” notification, so the UI kept
showing stale prefixes until a new keystroke occurred.

Fix:

- The change introduces a `pending_input_changed_queued` flag and a new
helper `notify_pending_input_if_needed` which will flushes the queued
notification as soon as we have an App context. The
`pending_input_changed` now resets the flag after notifying subscribers.

Antonio Scandurra 03ddd47eb0 Fix tab bar button flickering when opening menus (#45098)
Closes #33018

### Problem

When opening a `PopoverMenu` or `RightClickMenu`, the pane's tab bar
buttons would flicker (disappear for a couple frames then reappear).
This happened because:

1. The menu is created and `window.focus()` was called immediately
2. However, menus are rendered using `deferred()`, so their focus
handles aren't connected in the dispatch tree until after the deferred
draw callback runs
3. When the pane checks `has_focus()`, it calls `contains_focused()`
which walks up the focus hierarchy — but the menu's focus handle isn't
linked yet
4. `has_focus()` returns false → tab bar buttons disappear
5. Next frame, the menu is rendered and linked → `has_focus()` returns
true → buttons reappear

### Solution

Delay the focus transfer by 2 frames using nested `on_next_frame()`
calls before focusing the menu.

**Why 2 frames instead of 1?**

The frame lifecycle in GPUI runs `next_frame_callbacks` BEFORE `draw()`:

```
on_request_frame:
  1. Run next_frame_callbacks
  2. window.draw()  ← menu rendered here via deferred()
  3. Present
```

So:
- **Frame 1**: First `on_next_frame` callback runs, queues second
callback. Then `draw()` renders the menu and connects its focus handle
to the dispatch tree.
- **Frame 2**: Second `on_next_frame` callback runs and focuses the
menu. Now the focus handle is connected (from Frame 1's draw), so
`contains_focused()` returns true.

With only 1 frame, the focus would happen BEFORE `draw()`, when the
menu's focus handle isn't connected yet.

This follows the same pattern established in 0b5f177399 which fixed the
identical issue for the editor's `MouseContextMenu`.
