Extensions with non-GitHub repository links always use the GitHub icon,
which is inconsistent with the changes merged in #44738 and #57500. This
change makes `extension_ui.rs` use the Git hosting provider registry to
determine these icons. Below is a preview of the change:

# Objective
Let git indicators — the editor gutter, file colors, and `git::Diff` —
show all changes on the current branch relative to its merge base with
the default branch, instead of only uncommitted changes.
Supersedes #60398; thanks to @samuelcolvin for the original
implementation and motivation.
Closes FR-135
## Solution
- New `git.diff_base` setting (`"head"` | `"default_branch"`), applied
live and toggleable per session from the editor controls menu ("Diff
Against Default Branch").
- Statuses come from a real merge-base-to-worktree tree diff (`git diff
--merge-base`), so local edits that revert branch changes correctly show
as unchanged.
- `GitStore` shares one `DiffBufferList` per repository with the Branch
Diff view; `repo_snapshots` and `project_path_git_status` keep returning
index/worktree truth, while display surfaces use separate `display_*`
APIs.
- `BufferDiff` now records what its base is (`DiffBaseKind`); hunks
whose base isn't HEAD are read-only in the gutter — stage/restore
buttons and keybindings are inert, so committed work can't be silently
rewritten.
- `git::Diff` follows the setting; new `git::DiffHead` always opens the
HEAD diff; `git::BranchDiff` is renamed `git::DiffBranch` (deprecated
alias kept).
Tradeoffs / known limitations:
- Hunk-level staging is unavailable while in `default_branch` mode
(whole-file staging via the git panel still works). Staging just the
uncommitted sub-ranges of a branch hunk is a follow-up.
- Remote hosts running an older server ignore the new
`GetTreeDiff.includes_worktree` proto field and degrade to
committed-changes-only branch diffs.
- Repositories with no resolvable default branch fall back to
HEAD-relative behavior; a failed first resolution retries on the next
branch-list change.
## Testing
- Real-git-repo tests for the merge-base-to-worktree diff's edge cases:
files recreated after index deletion, committed deletions recreated on
disk, and symlinks.
- GPUI tests for status semantics (a branch change reverted on disk
shows clean), `git::Diff` routing, live setting changes, and read-only
hunk enforcement (restore/stage leave buffer and index untouched).

This adds a dedicated `AvailableLanguages` struct in preparation for a
more cabable language matching based on a given language config. No
functional changes, just shuffling some code around for this round.
Also made the LanguageMatcher non-cloneable in favor of wrapping it in
an Arc, since cloning is rather expensive for this and having a
reference is sufficient in all cases right now.

This PR explores the addition of a new feature and UI to improve
visibility into partially staged commits.
Currently, the Git panel shows tracked and untracked changes, but it
does not clearly distinguish between staged and unstaged changes.
As a result, it’s difficult to quickly see which changes are not staged
in the current UI. Both staged and unstaged changes are combined into
the `Uncommitted Changes` multibuffer. This developer experience differs
from other editors, most notably VS Code; which presents separate Staged
Changes and Changes lists.
### Staged and unstaged diffs in multibuffers
This PR introduces an alternative UI for unstaged changes that aligns
with the overall Zed experience. Instead of showing changes on a
per-file basis, staged and unstaged diffs are each displayed in their
own multibuffers, similar to how `Uncommitted Changes` currently works.
For example the following screenshot shows the current `Uncommitted
Changes` on the left, the `Staged Changes` in the middle and the
`Unstaged Changes` buffer on the right for comparison
<img width="1408" height="859"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/aa709f7a-041d-4cb1-95d6-84c0f5fff688"
/>
### Indicators/interactions
The new multibuffers can be opened in two ways:
1. Via a new `U` chip, which appears when a file has unstaged changes
2. Via new menu options
(See screenshots below for both interaction paths.)
<table>
<tr>
<td style="text-align: center; vertical-align: top;">
<p>via the chip</p>

<td style="text-align: center; vertical-align: top;">

/>
</td>
</tr>
</table>
### Design goals
- minimally intrusive UI changes (small new badge and menu items)
- adhere by Zed'ism (use multibuffer where possible)
- avoid disabling any current interactions (Uncommitted Changes ui is
unchanged)
- avoid introducing an app level view mode (no new settings needed)
### Experience goals
- make it easy to see what changes are not staged
- make it easy to see that a file has unstaged changes (avoid developers
accidently leaving out changes in a commit; a personal issue that I have
when using Zed)
- elegantly handle large file's unstaged changes (follows the same
collapse and expanding seen in `Uncommitted Changes`)
### How to try
- Clone the repo and run `cargo run`
- Make a change to a file and stage it
- Make another change to the file (the `U` indicator will appear)
- Click the `U` to see the unstaged view
### Open questions/rough edges
- [ ] determine if this user experience is useful for others
- [ ] ensure all interactions work as expected (response to all update
cases)
In general I'm really interested in hearing the community's feedback
about this interface, more than happy to make any changes or explore a
different solution!

This PR changes how base texts are managed by the `buffer_diff` crate,
to enable keeping two diff entities alive that share the same base text
buffer entity. Previously, each diff owned its own base text buffer and
edited it when calling `BufferDiff::set_snapshot`, so the only way to
reuse the same base text between two diffs was to have two independent
buffers for it, which is pretty inefficient.
After this PR, each diff still has a base text buffer, but
`set_snapshot` doesn't edit it. Instead, that responsibility moves into
the caller. For updating the base text buffer, this PR also introduces a
new pair of APIs, `Buffer::snapshot_with_edits` and
`Buffer::fast_forward`, which allow us to move the parsing of the new
base text into the background and then install the new syntax tree
synchronously on the foreground.
The git store uses the low-level APIs `set_snapshot` and `fast_forward`
directly, and manages the head text and index text buffers itself
(garbage-collecting them when they're no longer needed); this enables
adding an `open_staged_diff` API which returns a diff between the
managed index buffer and the managed head buffer (the latter is also
used for the uncommitted diff's base text). Other downstreams don't need
to reuse a base text buffer, and those have been migrated to use the
high-level `set_base_text` API, which now calls `set_snapshot` and
`fast_forward` internally, with a guard to prevent concurrent updates.
Another change worthy of note is that we now always diff the old base
text with the new base text to create `snapshot_with_edits`.
There are also some incidental bug fixes:
- Fixed an issue where a dangling weak unstaged diff could stick around
in the git store forever
- Restored the `IndexMatchesHead` optimization that had become
inoperative in the remote case
- Fixed a crash in the multibuffer due to the handling of
`BufferDiffEvent::LanguageChanged`, which could cause the multibuffer to
have transforms that were inconsistent with the diff base text.

## Why
This is the first step in moving the Git Graph work into the Git UI
crate before continuing with follow-up refactors and feature work. The
goal is for Git UI components and shared Git UI helpers to live in one
crate, so future changes to the Git Graph can reuse existing `git_ui`
code instead of duplicating it.
This PR is not only a filesystem move. While moving `git_graph` into
`git_ui`, a few small dependency and helper boundaries had to change:
- `git_graph` and `git_ui` both needed the same remote parsing and
commit tooltip construction behavior, so those pieces are now shared
from `git_ui`.
- `git_graph` previously depended on `project_panel` to resolve
file-history actions from the project panel selection. After moving
`git_graph` into `git_ui`, keeping that dependency would create an
undesirable `git_ui` -> `project_panel` relationship. The
project-panel-specific action forwarding now lives in `project_panel`,
and calls into exported `git_ui::git_graph` helpers instead.
- `git_graph` initialization now happens through `git_ui::init`, so
downstream crates only need to initialize `git_ui`.
This prepares the codebase for the next planned PRs: splitting the large
`git_graph.rs` implementation into smaller pieces, then adding Git Graph
features such as keeping the main branch lane at index `0`.
## License removal
The removed `crates/git_graph/LICENSE-GPL` file was a symlink to the
repository root `LICENSE-GPL`. The moved code is now inside `git_ui`,
which is also licensed as `GPL-3.0-or-later` and has its own
`LICENSE-GPL` symlink to the same root license file. The code did not
move to a differently licensed crate; it remains covered by the same GPL
license.

When viewing the diff for a commit where one of the files has a large
number (hundreds or thousands) of diff hunks, we can get a hang on the
main thread, since there's a large amount of work to recompute diff
transforms for thousands of excerpts. This PR makes it so that we batch
the addition of excerpts, with yield points in between batches so the UI
remains responsive.
We should have something similar for the project diff, but that's a bit
trickier; will address it in a separate PR.

Using the `Open File` action from a file in commit context takes you to
a read-only snapshot of the file at the point in time of the commit.
This change makes it so you navigate to the current working copy of the
file, if one exists. This has similar semantics to copy file reference.

bookmark To remove a bookmark:
- run the toggle bookmark action
- click on the bookmarks icon in the gutter

remove bookmark
remove all bookmarks with `workspace: clear bookmarks`
# Implementation
This mirrors the implementation of breakpoints. The rendering of the
gutter was refactored to make place for bookmark icons and buttons:
- Code was extracted to a `Gutter` struct
- Runnables, breakpoints and bookmarks are now collected ahead of
layouting. Just before layouting we remove the items that collide and do
not have priority.
- The `phantom_breakpoint` is replaced by a `gutter_hover_button`
## In depth phantom breakpoint discussion:
This was phantom_breakpoint. It worked as follows:
- A fake breakpoint was added to the list of breakpoints.
- While rendering the breakpoints it a breakpoint turned out to be fake
it would get a different description and look.
- The breakpoint list was edited run_indicators ("play buttons")
rendering to removes the fake breakpoint if it collided.
This would not scale to more functionality. Now we only render
breakpoints, bookmarks and run indicators. Then we render a button if
there is not breakpoint, bookmark or run indicator already present. We
can do so since the rendering of such "gutter indicators" has been
refactored into two phases:
- collect the items.
- render them if no higher priority item collides.
This is far easier and more readable which enabled me to easily take the
phantom_breakpoint system and use it for placing bookmarks as well :)
Note: this was previously merged but it needed a better squashed commit
message. For the actual PR see: 51404. This reverts commit
1c3846e76f.
Release Notes:
- Added Bookmarks
Co-authored-by: Austin Cummings <me@austincummings.com>
Closes#4526
Adds basic bookmark functionality to the editor, allowing users to mark
lines and later navigate between them.
### What's new
**Toggling bookmarks**
Users can toggle a bookmark on the current line(s) via the `editor:
toggle bookmark` action. A bookmark icon appears in the gutter for each
bookmarked line.
**Navigation**
Two new actions, `editor: go to next bookmark` and `editor: go to
previous bookmark`, navigate between bookmarks in the current buffer,
wrapping around at the ends of the buffer.
**Viewing all bookmarks**
`editor: view bookmarks` opens all bookmarks across the project in a
multibuffer, similar to how references and diagnostics are surfaced.
**Clearing bookmarks**
`workspace: clear bookmarks` removes all bookmarks in the current
project.
**Persistence**
Bookmarks are persisted to the workspace database and restored when the
workspace is reopened. They are stored as `(path, row)` pairs and
resolved back to text anchors. Out of range or unresolvable bookmarks
are skipped with a logged warning.
**Gutter rendering**
Bookmark icons are rendered in the gutter using the existing gutter
button layout system, consistent with breakpoints. They are suppressed
on lines that already show a breakpoint or phantom breakpoint indicator.
A new `gutter.bookmarks` setting (defaulting to `true`) controls their
visibility.
### What's left
- [x] Lazily load buffers that have bookmarks
- [x] Clean up test boilerplate
- [ ] Assign default keybindings
- [ ] Compare line of saved bookmarks with current buffer (gray out the
"stale" bookmarks)
### What's next (and nice to haves)
- [ ] Resilience against external edits
- [ ] Save column position with the bookmark
- [ ] Bookmarks attached to syntactic structures?
- [ ] Labeled bookmarks?
---
Release Notes:
- Added bookmarks: toggle bookmarks on lines with `editor: toggle
bookmark`, navigate with `editor: go to next bookmark` / `editor: go to
previous bookmark`, view all bookmarks with `editor: view bookmarks`,
and clear with `workspace: clear bookmarks`. Bookmarks are shown in the
gutter and persisted across sessions.

## Context
### Background
Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:
- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer
### Purpose of this PR
This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.
The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn buffer_anchor_to_anchor(&self, anchor: text::Anchor) -> Option<multi_buffer::Anchor>;
}
```
And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.
There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.
### Other changes
There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:
- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):
```
enum Anchor {
Min,
Excerpt {
text_anchor: text::Anchor,
path_key_index: PathKeyIndex,
diff_base_anchor: Option<text::Anchor>,
},
Max,
}
```
That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were
doing that were buggy for min/max! Instead, we have a new API that
correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn anchor_to_buffer_anchor(&self, anchor: multi_buffer::Anchor) -> Option<text::Anchor>;
}
```
- `MultiBufferExcerpt` has been removed in favor of a new
`map_excerpt_ranges` API directly on `MultiBufferSnapshot`.

Release Notes:
- git: Fixed bad performance in large branch diffs.
Previously, if you wanted to have a button that contains icons on both
edges, you'd need to use a `ButtonLike` component, which takes any
children. Meanwhile, the `Button` would only take one icon, where you
could control its position through the `IconPosition` enum. This has
always felt unnecessarily limiting. So, this PR removes this limitation
by adding two new methods to the button: `start_icon` and `end_icon`.
In the meantime, I have also been bothered by the unnecessary
indirection in the `IconButton` due to the existence of the `ButtonIcon`
component. So I figured I could also completely eliminate that by adding
some of its methods directly to the `IconButton` and in the Button, just
using a regular `Icon` component.
---
## Before
```rust
Button::new("id", "Label")
.icon(IconName::Plus)
.icon_position(IconPosition::Start)
.icon_size(IconSize::Small)
.icon_color(Color::Muted)
```
## After
```rust
Button::new("id", "Label")
.start_icon(Icon::new(IconName::Check))
.end_icon(Icon::new(IconName::ChevronDown).size(IconSize::XSmall))
```
This should have no visual impact to the UI.

- N/A (_Git Graph is still feature flagged, so no release notes for
now_)
- Made hover/active styles, as well as clicks, work for the entire row,
capture the graph element, too (needed to make some manual hover and
other states management to pull that off)
- Used the existing `Chip` component for the branch chip instead of a
local recreation
- Adjusted spacing and sizing of commit detail panel, including button
labels truncation and tooltip content
- Added diff stat numbers for the changed files, to match the commit
view
- Standardized the commit avatar component across the git graph, the
commit view, and the file history view
- Added scrollbar to the changed files uniform list
- Removed author name display redundancy (kept only email)
- Made the commit detail UI have a min-width

This change improves performance of project diff in that:
* scrolling in split view for very large diffs (think chromium repo with
`git reset HEAD~1000`) is now very smooth on macOS and fairly smooth on
Linux
* switching from split to unified is very smooth on macOS, and fairly
smooth on Linux
There still remains the case of (severe) hangs when switching from
unified to split however, but it will be addressed in a follow-up PR.
Anyhow, here's the screenshot of the Instruments.app capture of opening
chromium repo in Zed in split view, scrolling a little, moving to
unified, scrolling some more, and moving back to split. Prior to this
change, split -> unified would cause a severe hang, whereas now it's a
hang and thus feels much smoother already (without Instruments profiling
is barely visible). Unified -> split severe hangs are still there but
don't last as long.

Closes#48195
Filter out `remote_info` when viewing stashes by adding `.filter(|_|

GitHub's commit API endpoint is rate limited to 60 requests/hour for
unauthenticated users. This causes avatar loading to fail after toggling
blame a few times.
This PR uses GitHub's CDN avatar endpoint
`https://avatars.githubusercontent.com/u/e?email={email}&s=128` instead,
which doesn't count against API rate limits. The author email is already
available from local git data (blame output), so
no API calls are needed.
- When author email is available, constructs the CDN URL directly (zero
API calls)
- Falls back to existing API-based behavior when email is unavailable
- Adds unit tests for URL construction
Closes#47590
## Test plan
- [x] `./script/clippy` passes
- [x] `cargo test -p git_hosting_providers` passes (89 tests including 3
new ones i added)
- [ ] Manual test: Open a file, toggle git blame, verify avatars load
without hitting rate limits
Release Notes:
- Fixed GitHub avatar rate limiting in git blame by using CDN endpoint
instead of API calls (#47590)

Happy New Years! This PR is a second take at
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/38127 (cc @ConradIrwin)
This PR is significantly less complicated than the last attempt: while
we still keep our data on the `NavigationHistory` object, we no longer
tightly integrate it with the existing back/forward "browser history."
Instead, we keep our own stack of `(origin, target)` pairs (in a struct
to make it easy to extend with e.g., tag names in the future).
The PR is split into two separable commits. Most of the implementation
is in the second commit, which:
- Defines the stack data structure
- Implements `pane::GoToOlderTag` and `pane::GoToNewerTag` in terms of
the stack
- Hooks into `navigate_to_hover_links` to push tag stack entries
This last bit is the most fiddly. The core challenge is that we need to
keep track of the `origin` location and calculate the `target` location
across three codepaths that might involve creating a new editor and/or
splitting the pane. One thing in particular I found difficult was that
an editor's `nav_history` (an `ItemNavHistory`) seems to be populated
asynchronously. Instead of relying on it, I decided in this code to make
my own `ItemNavHistory`. I briefly tried to refactor the code in
question, but it seemed like it would significantly increase the scope
of the change.
I prefer this all-in-one tracking centered around
`navigate_to_hover_links ` to the `start/finish` approach taken in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/aebd394fb60641a2dd32b1f1b76a7c79ec4aa2ea
because I find it easier to convince myself that the right data is being
populated at the right times. Of course, let me know if you think
there's a better solution.

Adds a very simple diff review button behind a feature flag, which
appears in the gutter of people who have the flag (currently just me;
it's not even enabled for staff, since it doesn't do anything yet).

Also improves the commit view to use the same status-based buffer header
visual overrides as the project diff as a driveby.
Fixes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/45735
Release Notes:
- git: Binary files are no longer shown in garbled form when viewing an
old commit.
Breadcrumb visual reorchestration which makes a couple of key changes:
- Breadcrumbs are now displayed in file headers for multibuffer views.
Singleton buffers are unchanged.
- Multibuffer views now have collapse/expand all buttons available in
the toolbar
- Search in multibuffer views now takes up less space, by occupying the
primary toolbar location erstwhile taken up by breadcrumbs

Follow-up to #46001
That initial fix partly addressed the issue for diffs managed by the
`GitStore`, but not for other diffs (e.g. those managed by the
`ActionLog` or `CommitView`). The underlying issue is that we switched
to using a `Buffer` to represent the diff base text, and when updating
the diff we were calling `set_text` on this buffer and not waiting for
reparsing to finish. When the base text was represented by a series of
independent `BufferSnapshot`s, this wasn't an issue because we would
parse the base text in the background as part of computing the diff
update. This PR fixes the issue by waiting on reparsing to finish after
each call to `set_text`.

This PR reworks the (still feature-gated) side-by-side diff view to use
a different approach to representing the multibuffers on the left- and
right-hand sides.
Previously, these two multibuffers used identical sets of buffers and
excerpts, and were made to behave differently by adding a new knob to
the multibuffer controlling how diffs are displayed. Specifically, the
left-hand side multibuffer would filter out the added range of each hunk
from the excerpts using a new `FilteredInsertedHunk` diff transform, and
the right-hand side would simply not show the deleted sides of expanded
hunks. This approach has some problems:
- Line numbers, and actions that navigate by line number, behaved
incorrectly for the left-hand side.
- Syntax highlighting and other features that use the buffer syntax tree
also behaved incorrectly for the left-hand side.
In this PR, we've switched to using independent buffers to build the
left-hand side. These buffers are constructed using the base texts for
the corresponding diffs, and their lifecycle is managed by `BufferDiff`.
The red "deleted" regions on the left-hand side are represented by
`BufferContent` diff transforms, not `DeletedHunk` transforms. This
means each excerpt on the left represents a contiguous slice of a single
buffer, which fixes the above issues by construction.
The tradeoff with this new approach is that we now have to manually
synchronize excerpt ranges from the right side to the left, which we do
using `BufferDiffSnapshot::row_to_base_text_row`.

The failure would happen if the current version of the file was open as
an editor. This happened because the git blob and current version of the
buffer would have the same `ProjectPath`.
The fix was adding a new `DiskState::Historic` variant to represent
buffers that are past versions of a file (usually a snapshot from
version control). Historic buffers don't return a `ProjectPath` because
the file isn't real, thus there isn't and shouldn't be a `ProjectPath`
to it. (At least with the current way we represent a project path)
I also change the display name to use the local OS's path style instead
of being hardcoded to Posix, and cleaned up some code too.

- Fixed double slash in commit URLs
The github_url variable was generating URLs with an extra slash like
"https://github.com//user/repo/commit/xxxx" due to manual string
formatting
of the base_url() result.
Fixed by replacing manual URL construction with the proper
build_commit_permalink() method that uses Url::join() for correct
path handling, consistent with how other Git hosting providers
construct URLs.
