Kirill Bulatov 24254879b7 Stop re-resolving editorconfig sections on every language settings lookup (#63323)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/59689

Symbolicating the reporter's profile (21s of typing, Windows) showed
`Window::draw` taking 63% of the main thread at ~62 redraws/s (p95 draw
= 40ms), and 30.9% of the *entire* main thread inside
`EditorconfigStore::properties()`:
every `LanguageSettings` lookup — several per frame via
`DisplayMap::tab_size`, `MultiBuffer::language_settings`, indent guides,
and `LspStore::supports_range_formatting` — re-ran the full editorconfig
resolution (ancestor walk plus `ec4rs::Section::apply_to` over every key
of every section) and then cloned the whole `LanguageSettings` struct.
Real-world `.editorconfig` files carry hundreds of irrelevant keys
(`dotnet_*`, `ij_*`, ...), so the per-call map assembly dominated:
`RtlAllocateHeap` 7.3%, `memcmp` 7.0%, `memcpy` 6.6%,
`Properties::find_idx` 5.9% self time.

## Commit 1: resolve only the editorconfig properties Zed reads

- `EditorconfigStore::properties()` now applies only the 7 keys Zed
consumes (`indent_style`, `indent_size`, `tab_width`, `end_of_line`,
`max_line_length`, `insert_final_newline`, `trim_trailing_whitespace`)
instead of materializing every key of every matching section.
- Worktrees with no editorconfig at all now return `None` early instead
of allocating an empty `Properties` and forcing a `LanguageSettings`
clone on every lookup.
- Adds an `editor_render_with_editorconfig` benchmark: maximized window,
file-backed buffer at `src/app/components/editor_pane.ts`, a root
`.editorconfig` shaped after [the second
report](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/59689#issuecomment-5475124891)
(no `root = true`, a `[*]` section with ~3200 keys, 25 sections with
large `{...}` alternation lists) plus a 4-level nested chain, and a
typing workload (insert/delete + cursor moves).

```
main (770aac345c):      time: [37.905 ms 38.005 ms 38.107 ms]
                        time: [38.069 ms 38.157 ms 38.248 ms]
this commit:            time: [2.8547 ms 2.8618 ms 2.8702 ms]
                        time: [2.8372 ms 2.8435 ms 2.8510 ms]
```

The candidate is ~13x faster.
GPUI frame report over the same workload: window draw p50 12.71 ms →
0.76 ms, p99 23.38 ms → 1.22 ms; frame budget overruns 556 → 0.

## Commit 2: cache resolved `LanguageSettings` per buffer

- `Buffer` and `BufferSnapshot` now hold `resolved_settings:
Arc<LanguageSettings>`, recomputed by a `SettingsStore` global observer.
- Global methods for retrieving the settings are still there, but buffer
only uses them for multi buffer's `language_settings_at` with an
injected language different from the buffer's primary; cold scopes such
as extension API, LSP workspace configuration, server startup still use
the global resolution

Same benchmark, same method, on top of commit 1 (alternated runs, quiet
machine):

```
commit 1:               time: [2.8547 ms 2.8618 ms 2.8702 ms]
                        time: [2.8372 ms 2.8435 ms 2.8510 ms]
this commit:            time: [1.6256 ms 1.6325 ms 1.6403 ms]
                        change: [-42.685% -42.270% -41.854%] (p = 0.00 < 0.05)
                        time: [1.6221 ms 1.6284 ms 1.6352 ms]
```

Window draw p50 0.76 ms → 0.47 ms, p99 1.22 ms → 0.69 ms, max 1.02 ms;
zero frame-budget overruns on both sides.
Combined, the benchmark's per-keystroke cost drops ~23x vs `main`
(37.9–38.2 ms → 1.62–1.64 ms).

- Improved typing and rendering performance in projects that use

Mikayla MakiandBen Kunkle 5e1fd392f6 git: Add diff_base setting for showing changes since the default branch (#61501)
# Objective

Let git indicators — the editor gutter, file colors, and `git::Diff` —
show all changes on the current branch relative to its merge base with
the default branch, instead of only uncommitted changes.

Supersedes #60398; thanks to @samuelcolvin for the original
implementation and motivation.

Closes FR-135

## Solution

- New `git.diff_base` setting (`"head"` | `"default_branch"`), applied
live and toggleable per session from the editor controls menu ("Diff
Against Default Branch").
- Statuses come from a real merge-base-to-worktree tree diff (`git diff
--merge-base`), so local edits that revert branch changes correctly show
as unchanged.
- `GitStore` shares one `DiffBufferList` per repository with the Branch
Diff view; `repo_snapshots` and `project_path_git_status` keep returning
index/worktree truth, while display surfaces use separate `display_*`
APIs.
- `BufferDiff` now records what its base is (`DiffBaseKind`); hunks
whose base isn't HEAD are read-only in the gutter — stage/restore
buttons and keybindings are inert, so committed work can't be silently
rewritten.
- `git::Diff` follows the setting; new `git::DiffHead` always opens the
HEAD diff; `git::BranchDiff` is renamed `git::DiffBranch` (deprecated
alias kept).

Tradeoffs / known limitations:

- Hunk-level staging is unavailable while in `default_branch` mode
(whole-file staging via the git panel still works). Staging just the
uncommitted sub-ranges of a branch hunk is a follow-up.
- Remote hosts running an older server ignore the new
`GetTreeDiff.includes_worktree` proto field and degrade to
committed-changes-only branch diffs.
- Repositories with no resolvable default branch fall back to
HEAD-relative behavior; a failed first resolution retries on the next
branch-list change.

## Testing

- Real-git-repo tests for the merge-base-to-worktree diff's edge cases:
files recreated after index deletion, committed deletions recreated on
disk, and symlinks.
- GPUI tests for status semantics (a branch change reverted on disk
shows clean), `git::Diff` routing, live setting changes, and read-only
hunk enforcement (restore/stage leave buffer and index untouched).

3df0812498 Refactor BufferDiff to allow multiple diffs to share the same base text buffer (#58266)
This PR changes how base texts are managed by the `buffer_diff` crate,
to enable keeping two diff entities alive that share the same base text
buffer entity. Previously, each diff owned its own base text buffer and
edited it when calling `BufferDiff::set_snapshot`, so the only way to
reuse the same base text between two diffs was to have two independent
buffers for it, which is pretty inefficient.

After this PR, each diff still has a base text buffer, but
`set_snapshot` doesn't edit it. Instead, that responsibility moves into
the caller. For updating the base text buffer, this PR also introduces a
new pair of APIs, `Buffer::snapshot_with_edits` and
`Buffer::fast_forward`, which allow us to move the parsing of the new
base text into the background and then install the new syntax tree
synchronously on the foreground.

The git store uses the low-level APIs `set_snapshot` and `fast_forward`
directly, and manages the head text and index text buffers itself
(garbage-collecting them when they're no longer needed); this enables
adding an `open_staged_diff` API which returns a diff between the
managed index buffer and the managed head buffer (the latter is also
used for the uncommitted diff's base text). Other downstreams don't need
to reuse a base text buffer, and those have been migrated to use the
high-level `set_base_text` API, which now calls `set_snapshot` and
`fast_forward` internally, with a guard to prevent concurrent updates.

Another change worthy of note is that we now always diff the old base
text with the new base text to create `snapshot_with_edits`.

There are also some incidental bug fixes:
- Fixed an issue where a dangling weak unstaged diff could stick around
in the git store forever
- Restored the `IndexMatchesHead` optimization that had become
inoperative in the remote case
- Fixed a crash in the multibuffer due to the handling of
`BufferDiffEvent::LanguageChanged`, which could cause the multibuffer to
have transforms that were inconsistent with the diff base text.

## Context

### Background

Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:

- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer

### Purpose of this PR

This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.

The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:

```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
    fn buffer_anchor_to_anchor(&self, anchor: text::Anchor) -> Option<multi_buffer::Anchor>;
}
```

And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.

There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.

### Other changes

There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:

- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):

```
enum Anchor {
    Min,
    Excerpt {
        text_anchor: text::Anchor,
        path_key_index: PathKeyIndex,
        diff_base_anchor: Option<text::Anchor>,
    },
    Max,
}
```

That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were
doing that were buggy for min/max! Instead, we have a new API that
correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:

```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
    fn anchor_to_buffer_anchor(&self, anchor: multi_buffer::Anchor) -> Option<text::Anchor>;
}
```
- `MultiBufferExcerpt` has been removed in favor of a new
`map_excerpt_ranges` API directly on `MultiBufferSnapshot`.

chenwuji2000-cyber cbf03f5b38 acp_thread: Await Tree-sitter parsing before building agent panel diffs (#49101)
## Summary

Fixes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/48684

- Await `parsing_idle()` after `set_language()` in both
`Diff::finalized()` and `PendingDiff::finalize()` so that tree-sitter
parsing completes before buffer snapshots are taken for excerpts
- Without this, the 1ms sync parse timeout almost always expires for
non-trivial files, causing excerpts to be created with empty syntax
trees and missing syntax highlighting

## Root Cause

When the agent panel creates or finalizes a diff, it creates a new
`Buffer`, calls `set_language()` (which triggers async tree-sitter
parsing), then immediately proceeds to take buffer snapshots and create
excerpts **without waiting for parsing to complete**. The sync parse
timeout is only 1ms in production (`buffer.rs:1138`), so large files
almost always fail the sync parse and fall back to async parsing — but
no one awaits the async parse before building the diff.

## Fix

Add `buffer.update(cx, |buffer, _| buffer.parsing_idle()).await` after
`set_language()` in both code paths (`Diff::finalized()` and
`PendingDiff::finalize()`). This is the same pattern already used in
`buffer_diff.rs:1728-1731`.

## Test plan

- [x] `cargo test -p acp_thread` — all relevant tests pass
- [x] `./script/clippy` — no warnings
- [x] Manual test: open agent panel, ask it to generate a Python file
with multiline strings (`"""`), verify syntax highlighting is correct
after diff is finalized

Cole Miller 88a0b310d6 buffer_diff: Ensure that base text has finished parsing before completing update (#46054)
Follow-up to #46001

That initial fix partly addressed the issue for diffs managed by the
`GitStore`, but not for other diffs (e.g. those managed by the
`ActionLog` or `CommitView`). The underlying issue is that we switched
to using a `Buffer` to represent the diff base text, and when updating
the diff we were calling `set_text` on this buffer and not waiting for
reparsing to finish. When the base text was represented by a series of
independent `BufferSnapshot`s, this wasn't an issue because we would
parse the base text in the background as part of computing the diff
update. This PR fixes the issue by waiting on reparsing to finish after
each call to `set_text`.

554382a87e git: Rework side-by-side diff to use distinct buffers for the left-hand side (#44838)
This PR reworks the (still feature-gated) side-by-side diff view to use
a different approach to representing the multibuffers on the left- and
right-hand sides.

Previously, these two multibuffers used identical sets of buffers and
excerpts, and were made to behave differently by adding a new knob to
the multibuffer controlling how diffs are displayed. Specifically, the
left-hand side multibuffer would filter out the added range of each hunk
from the excerpts using a new `FilteredInsertedHunk` diff transform, and
the right-hand side would simply not show the deleted sides of expanded
hunks. This approach has some problems:

- Line numbers, and actions that navigate by line number, behaved
incorrectly for the left-hand side.
- Syntax highlighting and other features that use the buffer syntax tree
also behaved incorrectly for the left-hand side.

In this PR, we've switched to using independent buffers to build the
left-hand side. These buffers are constructed using the base texts for
the corresponding diffs, and their lifecycle is managed by `BufferDiff`.
The red "deleted" regions on the left-hand side are represented by
`BufferContent` diff transforms, not `DeletedHunk` transforms. This
means each excerpt on the left represents a contiguous slice of a single
buffer, which fixes the above issues by construction.

The tradeoff with this new approach is that we now have to manually
synchronize excerpt ranges from the right side to the left, which we do
using `BufferDiffSnapshot::row_to_base_text_row`.

03f9cf4414 Represent relative paths using a dedicated, separator-agnostic type (#38744)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/38690
Closes #37353

### Background

On Windows, paths are normally separated by `\`, unlike mac and linux
where they are separated by `/`. When editing code in a project that
uses a different path style than your local system (e.g. remoting from
Windows to Linux, using WSL, and collaboration between windows and unix
users), the correct separator for a path may differ from the "native"
separator.

Previously, to work around this, Zed converted paths' separators in
numerous places. This was applied to both absolute and relative paths,
leading to incorrect conversions in some cases.

### Solution

Many code paths in Zed use paths that are *relative* to either a
worktree root or a git repository. This PR introduces a dedicated type
for these paths called `RelPath`, which stores the path in the same way
regardless of host platform, and offers `Path`-like manipulation APIs.
RelPath supports *displaying* the path using either separator, so that
we can display paths in a style that is determined at runtime based on
the current project.

The representation of absolute paths is left untouched, for now.
Absolute paths are different from relative paths because (except in
contexts where we know that the path refers to the local filesystem)
they should generally be treated as opaque strings. Currently we use a
mix of types for these paths (std::path::Path, String, SanitizedPath).

Cole MillerandConrad d88fd00e87 acp: Fix panic with edit file tool (#36732)
We had a frequent panic when the agent was using our edit file tool. The
root cause was that we were constructing a `BufferDiff` with
`BufferDiff::new`, then calling `set_base_text`, but not waiting for
that asynchronous operation to finish. This means there was a window of
time where the diff's base text was set to the initial value of
`""`--that's not a problem in itself, but it was possible for us to call
`PendingDiff::update` during that window, which calls
`BufferDiff::update_diff`, which calls
`BufferDiffSnapshot::new_with_base_buffer`, which takes two arguments
`base_text` and `base_text_snapshot` that are supposed to represent the
same text. We were getting the first of those arguments from the
`base_text` field of `PendingDiff`, which is set immediately to the
target base text without waiting for `BufferDiff::set_base_text` to run
to completion; and the second from the `BufferDiff` itself, which still
has the empty base text during that window.

As a result of that mismatch, we could end up adding `DeletedHunk` diff
transforms to the multibuffer for the diff card even though the
multibuffer's base text was empty, ultimately leading to a panic very
far away in rendering code.

I've fixed this by adding a new `BufferDiff` constructor for the case
where the buffer contents and the base text are (initially) the same,
like for the diff cards, and so we don't need an async diff calculation.
I also added a debug assertion to catch the basic issue here earlier,
when `BufferDiffSnapshot::new_with_base_buffer` is called with two base
texts that don't match.

Agus ZubiagaandBennet Bo Fenner 725ed5dd01 acp: Hide loading diff animation for external agents and update in place (#36699)
The loading diff animation can be jarring for external agents because
they stream the diff at the same time the tool call is pushed, so it's
only displayed while we're asynchronously calculating the diff. We'll
now only show it for the native agent.

Also, we'll now only update the diff when it changes, which avoids
unnecessarily hiding it for a few frames.

tidely 7bdc99abc1 Fix clippy::redundant_clone lint violations (#36558)
This removes around 900 unnecessary clones, ranging from cloning a few
ints all the way to large data structures and images.

A lot of these were fixed using `cargo clippy --fix --workspace
--all-targets`, however it often breaks other lints and needs to be run
again. This was then followed up with some manual fixing.

I understand this is a large diff, but all the changes are pretty
trivial. Rust is doing some heavy lifting here for us. Once I get it up
to speed with main, I'd appreciate this getting merged rather sooner
than later.

This pull request introduces title generation and history replaying. We
still need to wire up the rest of the history but this gets us very
close. I extracted a lot of this code from `agent2-history` because that
branch was starting to get long-lived and there were lots of changes
since we started.
