Fixes the bug that made us remove the sandbox.
The bug in question was very dumb:
- there is sophisticated machinery for detecting whether a user-granted
writable path is swapped out for a symlink in the timing gap between
approval and sandbox creation
- there was no equivalent machinery to do the same for the (much larger)
gap between a user *persisting an approval* (either for the current
thread or permanently via settings)
- The fix is essentially to store canonical (i.e. absolute and
symlink-free at all depths) paths as the source of truth, but retain the
raw path for display purposes
- On WSL, there is extra care needed becasue of the bidirectional
mounting (i.e. `/mnt/c/...` and `\\wsl.localhost\Ubuntu\...`). In
particular, `/mnt/c/...` paths, since their inodes do not necessarily
pin NTFS file references, weaken the sandbox guarantees, and so we need
some extra UI to call this out and docs etc...
This also does not remove the feature flag, but just toggles it to
"enabled_for_all"

# Objective
Add a new `agent.compaction_model` setting that lets users specify a
separate language model for context compaction (`/compact` and
auto-compaction), independent of the thread's active conversation model.
Compaction is just summarization — there's no reason to pay Opus prices
for it when a cheaper model does the job faster. We've also seen
reasoning models misbehave on this task (empty responses, repetition
loops at high effort), so picking a dedicated non-reasoning model for
compaction is useful.
## Solution
- New `compaction_model: Option<LanguageModelSelection>` field in
`AgentSettingsContent` and `AgentSettings`, mirroring
`thread_summary_model`.
- New `compaction_model: Option<ConfiguredModel>` slot on
`LanguageModelRegistry` with `select_/set_/compaction_model()` trio,
mirroring the existing pattern. The setter deliberately does **not**
emit a registry event in v1; callers read the slot lazily at compaction
time.
- New `Thread::compaction_model(&self, cx: &App)` helper that returns
the configured model or falls back to `self.model()`. Two call sites —
`Thread::compact` and `perform_compaction_if_needed` — now go through
this helper instead of reading `self.model()` directly.
- `build_compaction_telemetry` accepts the compaction model explicitly
so the `model` field reflects the model that actually streamed the
request. `max_tokens` still derives from `thread.model()` (threshold
semantics are unchanged).
- Documentation updated at `docs/src/ai/agent-settings.md` (new
user-facing setting).
**Example:**
```json
{
"agent": {
"default_model": {
"provider": "anthropic",
"model": "claude-opus-4-6"
},
"compaction_model": {
"provider": "anthropic",
"model": "claude-sonnet-4-5"
}
}
}
```
**Resolution chain:**
```
agent.compaction_model (if set & available)
→ thread.model() (always available, current behavior)
```
**Behavior change:**
| Trigger | Before | After |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Manual `/compact` | Uses `thread.model()` | Uses
`agent.compaction_model` if set & available; else `thread.model()` |
| Auto-compaction | Uses `thread.model()` | Same as above |
| `/compact` when thread has no model | `NoModelConfiguredError` |
Succeeds if `compaction_model` resolves |
| `compaction_model` configured but provider missing / model id unknown
| n/a | Falls back to `thread.model()` and logs a one-time warning |
**Explicit non-goals:**
- No `Event::CompactionModelChanged`(no consumer; the `_cx` parameter on
`set_compaction_model` is intentionally accepted for future use).
- No GUI selector (consistent with all other feature-specific models).
- No per-profile override.
- No runtime API-error fallback — only config-time failure (provider not
registered, model id not in `provided_models`) triggers fallback. This
matches every other feature-specific model.
- No change to threshold calculation, auto-compact trigger, or
`COMPACTION_PROMPT`.
- No propagation to subagent threads.
## Testing
3 new unit tests in `crates/agent/src/thread.rs::tests`:
- `test_compaction_uses_configured_compaction_model` — manual `/compact`
routes to the configured model; thread's primary model receives no
request; telemetry reflects the configured model.
- `test_compaction_falls_back_when_compaction_model_unavailable` —
configured-but-unresolvable falls back to `thread.model()`; telemetry
reflects the fallback model.
- `test_auto_compaction_uses_compaction_model` — auto-compaction
triggered by threshold honors the same setting.
All 14 existing compaction tests still pass. Test suites in
`crates/agent_settings`, `crates/language_model`,
`crates/settings_content`, `crates/agent_ui` unchanged. `cargo clippy`
clean on the changed crates.
**How reviewers can test:**
1. Add `agent.compaction_model` to `settings.json` with a cheaper model
than the thread's primary model, run `/compact`, observe the cheaper
model receives the request.
2. Set `agent.compaction_model` to a non-existent provider/model id, run
`/compact`, observe fallback to thread model and a `log::warn!` line.
3. Trigger auto-compaction by reaching the threshold, observe it uses
`compaction_model`.
**Platforms tested:** local Linux (cargo check + cargo test on agent /
agent_settings / language_model / settings_content / agent_ui crates).

Removes git sandbox feature
The reason is essentially:
- write access to a `.git` dir can be trivially escalated to unsandboxed
access
- therefore, it is misleading to offer git access separate from
unsandboxed access
- instead, we encourage the model to use `--no-optional-locks` to avoid
needing write access to `git status`, etc.

This follows up on discussion #56551.
Right now, when Zed generates a commit message, it includes project
rules files like `AGENTS.md`, `CLAUDE.md`, and `.rules` in the prompt
alongside the git diff. That can add a lot of extra context for a task
that is really just summarizing the changes in a commit.
This PR adds an `include_project_rules` option to
`agent.commit_message_model`. When it is set to `false`, Zed skips
loading project rules when generating commit messages. If the option is
omitted, the current behavior stays the same.
Example:
```json
{
"agent": {
"commit_message_model": {
"provider": "anthropic",
"model": "claude-3-5-haiku",
"include_project_rules": false
}
}
}
```
I also updated the settings plumbing so this option is only used for commit message generation and defaults to true when not specified.

Agent terminal sandboxing now protects `.git` metadata by default and
exposes an explicit `allow_git_access` approval. Without it, file
contents of the `.git` directories for opened worktrees and discovered
repositories (including a linked worktree's common `.git`) cannot be
read or written, though their metadata stays visible; when approved,
those Git directories become writable so commands like fetch/commit
work. SSH commit signing keeps working because the inherited
`SSH_AUTH_SOCK` is allowed as local Unix-socket IPC, which does not let
sandboxed commands send network packets to other machines. The Seatbelt
profile also allows PTY terminal-control ioctls so signing/passphrase
prompts can manage terminal state.
This intentionally restricts only `.git` itself (whose location we know
exactly, including the worktree case) rather than
`.gitignore`/`.gitattributes`/`.gitmodules`, since those can be nested
arbitrarily and the goal is to keep the policy expressible as a plain
deny-by-default allowlist that will port to Linux and Windows sandboxes
later.
Closes AI-334
Release Notes:
- Improved agent terminal sandboxing for Git metadata, Git worktrees,
and SSH commit signing.
Follow-ups to the recently-landed agent terminal sandboxing work.
- Make the persistent "Allow Unsandboxed Terminal Commands" setting
(`allow_unsandboxed`) the single off-switch for the agent terminal
sandbox: when enabled, the sandboxed terminal tool isn't exposed and the
system prompt omits the sandbox section, so the model uses the plain
`terminal` tool (and on Windows, WSL sandbox setup is skipped). This
removes the dead, unwired `disabled` setting that was meant to do the
same thing but had no UI, writer, or docs. Per-command and per-thread
`unsandboxed: true` grants are unchanged.
- Expand the blocklist of Windows-specific environment variables that
aren't forwarded into the WSL sandbox (system locations, `HOME`/profile
paths, host/session identity, CPU descriptors, etc.) so they can't
shadow or break Linux commands. It stays a blocklist, so portable
variables like `LANG` still reach the command.

Third of a four-PR stack adding hostname-allowlisted network access to
agent terminal sandboxing. Stacked on #59218 — review/merge #59217 and
#59218 first.
Replaces the boolean `allow_network` terminal-sandbox escalation with a
hostname allowlist. The `terminal` tool now takes `allow_hosts` (exact
hostnames or leading-`*.` subdomain wildcards, validated up front) and
`allow_all_hosts` as a broad escape hatch. Approval prompts name the
requested hosts, thread grants and persistent "allow always" settings
cover requests via host-pattern subsumption the same way write paths use
subtree containment, and the authorization card in the agent panel lists
the requested hosts.
Host allowlists aren't enforced yet in this PR: `SandboxWrap` carries
the allowlist, but any network request still maps to unrestricted egress
at the Seatbelt layer, matching previous behavior. Enforcement via the
in-process proxy lands in the final PR of the stack. All of this is
behind the existing sandboxing feature flag. For non-local projects
(where the loopback proxy won't apply), host requests are widened to
"arbitrary network access" before prompting so approvals match
enforcement. Old persisted `network: bool` authorization details still
deserialize via a serde alias.

Adds an `"Agent Compaction Completed"` telemetry event that fires for
both threshold-triggered auto-compaction and the manual `/compact`
command (both already behind the `handoff` flag). The event records the
model, model provider, thinking effort, the model's context window size,
the token counts immediately before and after compaction, whether the
compaction succeeded/failed/canceled (with the error string on failure),
the user's configured auto-compaction threshold (both the raw form and
the resolved absolute token count), whether auto-compaction is enabled,
and the number of retries.
Both compaction paths funnel through `stream_compaction`, so a
`CompactionTelemetry` snapshot is captured when a compaction starts and
stashed on the thread. On success, emission is deferred until the next
completion request reports usage, so `tokens_after` reflects the real
post-compaction context size rather than an estimate (we have no
token-counting API, and it's safe to assume a compaction is always
followed by another request). On failure or cancellation the event fires
immediately with no `tokens_after`. Retries are accumulated across
attempts so a single logical compaction produces exactly one event.
While wiring up retry counting I noticed the existing auto-compaction
retry path in `run_turn_internal` never increments `attempt`, so a
repeatedly-failing retryable compaction could retry without bound. I
left that behavior untouched as out of scope, but the new `retries`
field will surface it if it happens.

Adds two new agent settings nested under `auto_compact`, `enabled` and
`threshold`, which control automatic compaction of the agent's context
window as part of the handoff feature. Both surface in the settings UI
under Agent Configuration, gated behind the `handoff` feature flag so
they only appear for users on that flag.
The `threshold` accepts three forms: a percentage string ending in `%`
(e.g. `"80%"` or `"95.5%"`) measured against the model's context window,
a positive integer to compact after that many tokens have been used, or
a negative integer to compact once that many tokens remain in the
window. `0` and bare non-integer numbers are rejected. It deserializes
from either a JSON string or integer and resolves to a typed enum,
falling back to the `"80%"` default (with a logged warning) when the
configured value is invalid. In the settings UI the threshold is a
free-form text field so all three forms can be entered.

Follow-up hardening on top of #57972 (granular sandbox write
permissions), based on a review of that branch. The most important fix
is that model-requested `fs_write_paths` were joined but never
normalized, so a path containing `..` could pass the lexical
subtree-containment checks while seatbelt canonicalized it to somewhere
else entirely — causing skipped approval prompts and silent runtime
write denials. Write paths are now lexically normalized (via
`util::paths::normalize_lexically`) at the point they enter the system,
both for model requests and for hand-edited persistent grants, so the
containment check, the approval prompt, and the enforced sandbox policy
all operate on the same path.
The subtree insert/prune and containment logic had drifted into roughly
five near-identical copies across `agent`, `agent_settings`, and
`settings_content`; these now share `util::paths::insert_subtree` and
`path_within_subtree`. The dead `SandboxPermissions::covers` (only ever
exercised by its own tests, duplicating the production
`covers_with_persistent`) is removed, and its tests rewritten to cover
the real settings-compilation path including `..` normalization.
The remaining changes reduce brittleness: the sandbox permission option
ids (`allow`, `allow_thread`, `allow_always`, `deny`) are now shared
constants in `acp_thread` instead of bare string literals scattered
across the agent and UI, `persist_sandbox_always_permission` logs
instead of silently doing nothing when no filesystem is available, and a
comment documents why replay always resolves the terminal tool to the
non-sandboxed variant.

Adds granular, per-path write permissions to the agent's sandboxed
`terminal` tool.
Previously a command could only request unrestricted filesystem writes
(`allow_fs_write: true`) as an all-or-nothing escape hatch. Now the
model can request write access to specific paths via `fs_write_paths`,
and each granted directory covers its whole subtree. The broad escape
hatch is still available as `allow_fs_write_all: true` for cases where
the paths can't be enumerated up front.
Approval prompts now let the user grant a write request either just for
that command or for the rest of the conversation. Conversation grants
are tracked in memory (never persisted) using pure subtree containment,
so later commands writing under an already-granted path run without
prompting again.
Closes AI-335

There's currently no way to customize AI-generated commit messages on a
per-commit basis. You can put instructions in AGENTS.md or a project
rules file, but those get fed into every agent interaction, not just
commit generation. The built-in "Commit message" prompt used to be
editable in the Rules Library, but that was replaced by Skills, which
aren't used when generating commit messages.
This PR adds an `agent.commit_message_instructions` setting. Its
contents are added to the commit message prompt in their own section,
alongside any project rules, so you can ask for a specific format
(Conventional Commits, a ticket prefix, etc.) without changing how the
agent behaves elsewhere:
```json
{
"agent": {
"commit_message_instructions": "Use the Conventional Commits format: <type>(<scope>): <description>."
#### Closes#54741
Fix disabled context server tools being callable in profiles with
`enable_all_context_servers: true`
`AgentProfileSettings::is_context_server_tool_enabled` short-circuited
on `enable_all_context_servers` and ignored explicit per-tool `false`
entries in `context_servers`, so agents could still call tools the user
had disabled in their profile.
The filter now matches what the tool picker UI already does
(`tool_picker.rs:357-371`): the explicit per-tool setting wins, and
`enable_all_context_servers` is only consulted as a fallback when the
tool has no explicit entry.
Closes#54313
**Before:**
- Favoriting a model only stored `provider`, `model`, and hardcoded
`enable_thinking` to `false`.
- Selecting a favorited model would not restore your preferred
`enable_thinking`, `effort`, or `speed` settings.
This means that if you'd like to use, say, GPT 5.4 your favorite model
on `xhigh` effort every single time, switching to it would set effort to
`medium` (the default for the model) instead.
**After:**
- Favoriting a model captures your current `enable_thinking`, `effort`,
and `speed` when it matches the currently-selected model. Otherwise, it
falls back to the model's own defaults, i.e. thinking-capable models are
no longer favorited with `enable_thinking` forced to `false`.
- Selecting a favorited model applies its stored thinking / effort /
speed.
- Toggling thinking, changing effort, or toggling fast mode on a
favorited model updates the favorite entry in settings (along with the
existing `default_model` setting), so the preference doesn't drift.
Release Notes:
- Agent favorite models now remember and restore per-model thinking,
effort level, and fast mode preferences.
like a functional idea because it'd be visible from any state of the app
creating a thread for each individual one. However, the toast was met
with some negative (and correct) feedback, mostly because it is
interruptive, and thus can sometimes block very relevant surfaces, like
either the agent panel itself or the Git commit area.
Therefore, in this PR, I'm removing the toast and adding a button in the
status bar instead; a bit more minimal, not interruptive, and a common
place for other items that might require your attention. The status bar
can be quite busy these days, though; we can display diagnostics, LSP
status, and file names in there; conscious of that. But it felt like it
could work given this button is such a transient one that you can either
easily manually dismiss or wait for it to be auto-dismissed as you or
the agent resolves the merge conflicts.
Release Notes:
- Git: Improved how we surface the affordance to resolve codebase-wide
merge conflicts with the agent in the UI.
- Agent: Added a setting to control whether or not the button to resolve
merge conflicts with the agent should be displayed.
This PR changes `agent.play_sound_when_agent_done` from a boolean to an
enum with three options:
- `never` (default)
- `when_hidden`
- `always`
In Settings → Agent, this now appears as a _Play Sound When Agent Done_
dropdown.
Existing settings are migrated automatically:
- `false` → `never`
- `true` → `always`
### Why
A boolean only allowed the sound to be on or off. This change gives
users clearer control over when the agent notification sound should
play.
### Verification
- Added a migrator test for this setting change.
- Manually tested the settings UI, settings migration and the feature
Release Notes:
- Added new agent notification sound options
This PR adds the ability to change both the terminal and agent panels
between fixed and flexible sizing using the status bar button right
click menu. The value persists in your settings, similar to the dock
position.
I've also slightly tweaked the styling of the "Dock Left" and "Dock
Right" items in the right-click menu, adding the current value as an
item with a check beside it, to make it clear that it's a selectable
option.
This PR further refines the behavior of thinking blocks in the agent
panel. In the PR linked above, I had previously made it auto-expand
while running but then auto-collapse when finished. Although that
reduced the sense of staleness when the model is thinking for too long,
it caused layout shift that many found jarring.
Therefore, this PR changes the behavior so that, by default, thinking
blocks render "almost" fully expanded. They will have a max-height and
will auto-scroll as content streams in. Therefore, this design fully
removes layout shift and still allows you to sort of follow along the
generated thinking content, even though sometimes it can be fast, in
which case you can always fully expand it. Lastly, I'm also adding a
"thinking display" setting that allows to choose between the "automatic"
behavior (what I just described, the default), always expanded, or
always collapsed.
Release Notes:
- Agent: Refined thinking block display, removing layout shift while
still allowing it to be readable while it streams in. It comes together
with a "Thinking Display" setting to control the behavior
This PR adds the ability to save in the settings whether new threads
should start in the current project or in a new Git worktree.
Additionally, it also adds a keybinding that allows cycling through the
menu options easily, with the ability to use cmd-click/enter to choose
which one is set as the default.
No release notes because this feature/settings depends on a feature flag
that isn't out yet.
Remove the `AgentsPanel` (from the `agent_ui_v2` crate) and the utility
pane infrastructure from the codebase.
The Agents Panel was a separate panel gated behind the `agent-v2`
feature flag that was redundant with the existing Agent Panel. Utility
panes were a layout concept (secondary panes next to the editor,
separate from dock panels) whose only consumer was `AgentThreadPane` in
the Agents Panel.
### Changes
- Deleted the entire `agent_ui_v2` crate (`agents_panel.rs`,
`agent_thread_pane.rs`)
- Deleted `workspace/src/utility_pane.rs`
- Removed `UtilityPane`, `UtilityPaneHandle`, `UtilityPanePosition`,
`MinimizePane`, `ClosePane` from `workspace/src/dock.rs`
- Removed all utility pane fields, methods, and render blocks from
`workspace.rs`
- Removed all aside toggle code from `pane.rs` and `pane_group.rs`
- Removed `agents_panel_dock` setting from agent settings and
`default.json`
- Removed all `agent_ui_v2` references from `main.rs`, `zed.rs`, and
Cargo.toml files
- Cleaned up test code in `tool_permissions.rs` and `agent_ui.rs`
Follow-up to https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/48209 - those
hardcoded rules are replacing these default settings, which will make
the rules clearer by removing the "override" scenario.
(No release notes because granular tool permissions are still behind a
feature flag.)
Addressing the feedback left on a previous PR of mine:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46663. I feel like this is
worthy of a setting. Note, however, that this does not apply to typing
`ctrl-c` in the terminal from within the agent panel; this is purely
controlling what happens when you click on the "Stop" button in the
terminal tool call card.
Release Notes:
- Agent: Added a setting for controlling the behavior of the stop button
in the terminal tool call card (between cancelling the command to run
and the thread, or just the command).
This builds on https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46112 (which
should be merged first) and adds the permission evaluation logic and
integrates it with the terminal tool as part of the tool permissions
feature. This is a separate PR for [stacked
diffs](https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/stacked-diffs) to make
review easier.
## Changes
- **Add `tool_permissions.rs`** with `decide_permission()` function that
implements:
- `deny > confirm > allow` precedence hierarchy (security-critical)
- Case-sensitive and case-insensitive regex matching
- Integration with existing `always_allow_tool_actions` setting
- Comprehensive unit tests (15 tests)
- **Integrate with terminal tool**:
- Commands matching deny rules are blocked immediately with an error
- Commands matching allow rules proceed without confirmation dialog
- Commands requiring confirmation show the dialog as before
- Added integration tests for deny and allow rule scenarios
