## Objective
Zed can report that a settings file uses deprecated settings even when
it contains no deprecations. A context server configured with only a
`url` is enough to trigger the prompt, although the backup Zed offers to
write is identical to the current file.
Fixes#24967.
## Solution
Two text-edit migrations cancel each other on `context_servers` entries:
one adds a `source` key and a later one removes it. The round trip
reindents the entry, and the migrator mistakes the leftover whitespace
for a migration.
Remove `m_2025_06_16` rather than comparing around that whitespace. It
wrote `source` and `settings` into every entry, but
`ContextServerSettingsContent` contains neither field today. `settings`
is worse than inert: an empty entry such as `{ "settings": {} }` matches
neither the `Stdio` nor `Http` variant of the untagged enum.
Update `m_2025_06_27`, the only remaining consumer of the generated
`"source": "custom"`, to detect legacy entries from the shape of
`command` itself. This continues to flatten settings written before
`source` existed. It also deliberately flattens an object `command`
beside `"source": "extension"`, which the old migration skipped. The
command shape is invalid regardless of the declared source, and a test
pins the new behavior. `m_2025_11_25` remains unchanged because it still
removes `source` from settings that genuinely carry it.
This deletes one migration and edits another despite the warning at the
top of `migrator.rs`. That warning protects later migrations that depend
on earlier output, but this output has no remaining consumer. I left the
policy unchanged rather than adding an exception in the same PR that
relies on it, but I can document the exception if preferred.
## Testing
- `cargo test -p migrator` passes, 86 tests. The suite loses the three
tests that only exercised the deleted migration and gains
`test_flatten_context_server_command_alongside_source`, covering a
legacy entry that carries both `source` and an object `command`.
- Restoring the `source` requirement on `m_2025_06_27` with the deletion
in place turns `test_flatten_context_server_command` red. Its input is a
pre-`source` entry, which is what makes the relaxation load-bearing
rather than incidental.
- To check by hand: add `"context_servers": { "grep": { "url":
"https://mcp.grep.app" } }` to user settings and confirm no migration
prompt appears. Add `"show_inline_completions": true` alongside it and
confirm the prompt returns and leaves the context server block
untouched.
- I have not run those steps in a built editor. The tests call
`migrate_settings`, which is all `should_migrate_settings` checks before
raising the prompt, so that call is the whole untested gap. It’s all
platform-independent text processing, so I did not test Linux or
Windows.

## Summary
Introduces `format_on_save` variants that format only modified lines,
limiting formatting to lines changed since the last commit. This
prevents massive diffs when editing legacy codebases. Aligns with VS
Code's `editor.formatOnSaveMode` naming:
- `"modifications"` — formats only git-diffed lines. Requires source
control; skips formatting if no diff is available.
- `"modifications_if_available"` — formats only git-diffed lines,
falling back to full-file formatting for untracked files, when source
control is unavailable, or when the LSP does not support range
formatting.
Also supports importing equivalent VS Code settings
(`formatOnSaveMode`).
This PR uses the range-based whitespace/newline infrastructure from the
dependency PR above.
## Changes
<details>
<summary><b>New settings, modified ranges computation, VS Code
import</b></summary>
### New settings (`language.rs`, `default.json`, `all-settings.md`)
Two new `FormatOnSave` variants: `Modifications` and
`ModificationsIfAvailable`.
### Modified ranges computation (`items.rs`)
- `compute_format_decision()` — reads `format_on_save` setting across
all buffers, determines whether to use ranged formatting (`Ranges`),
full formatting (`Full`), or skip (`Skip`).
- `compute_modified_ranges()` — extracts modified line ranges from git
diff hunks via `BufferDiffSnapshot`.
- `is_empty_range()` — helper to detect deletion-only hunks that produce
no formatable content.
The `save()` method calls `compute_format_decision()` and dispatches
accordingly.
### Modifications mode in `lsp_store.rs`
- Adds `FormatOnSave::Modifications |
FormatOnSave::ModificationsIfAvailable` to the formatter selection match
arm.
- `ModificationsIfAvailable` falls back to full-file formatting when
ranged formatting produces no results.
### VS Code settings import (`vscode_import.rs`, `settings_store.rs`)
Imports `editor.formatOnSaveMode` mapping:
- `"modifications"` → `FormatOnSave::Modifications`
- `"modificationsIfAvailable"` →
`FormatOnSave::ModificationsIfAvailable`
- `"file"` → `FormatOnSave::On`
</details>
## Tests
- `test_modifications_format_on_save` — basic modifications mode
formatting with dirty buffer
- `test_modifications_format_no_changes` — clean buffer triggers no
formatting
- `test_modifications_format_lsp_no_range_support` — LSP without range
formatting skips entirely for `Modifications`
- `test_modifications_format_lsp_returns_empty_edits` — empty edits
handled gracefully
- `test_modifications_format_multiple_hunks` — two non-adjacent edits
produce two separate range formatting requests

Release Notes:

entire file
- When using modifications mode, `remove_trailing_whitespace_on_save`
and `ensure_final_newline_on_save` are also scoped to changed lines,
preventing unwanted diff jitter in legacy codebases
- Added support for importing VS Code's `editor.formatOnSaveMode`

Instead of manually handing hiding the cursor on keyboard input at the
editor level, GPUI will now take care of it.
This makes it significantly easier to handle the edge cases, and allows
delegating the cursor restoration to the platform itself in the macOS
case. On Linux and Windows, we still have to restore the cursor on
movement ourselves, but this now happens at the platform-specific level.
Bugs fixed by this change:
- No cursor when "Unsaved edits" prompt appears
- Cursor disappears when clicking a panel button if it contains a search
bar (e.g. collab panel)
### Setting rename
The `hide_mouse` setting value `"on_typing_and_movement"` has been
renamed to `"on_typing_and_action"` to better reflect what it actually
does — it hides the cursor when a keystroke resolves to an action (e.g.
cursor movement, deletion). Existing settings are migrated
automatically.

I noticed that there are helper migration functions that apply settings
transformations to multiple layers (root, platform, release-channel, and
profile):
`migrate_settings`
`migrate_language_setting`
Both of these handle the old settings profile forms, so I've updated
them to handle either form, for usage in historical and future
migrations.
Migration `m_2026_04_10` actually introduced a wrapper function to
provide to `migrate_settings` to handle both forms, which is what clued
me into the fact that I missed these migration helpers when I wrote the
`m_2026_04_01` originally (I didn't know they existed).

This PR makes Zed only have one worktree picker, as opposed to a flavor
of it in the title bar and another in the agent panel. It then moves it
to the title bar, making it always present, so that its trigger is
separate from the branch picker (which now contains only two views:
branches and stashes). For the worktree picker, I'm mostly favoring the
behavior we've introduced in the agent-panel-flavored version.
It also updates the title bar settings migration to use the JSON
`migrate_settings` helper instead of a shallow Tree-sitter rewrite, so
old `show_branch_icon = true` values are promoted to
`show_branch_status_icon = true` across root, platform, release-channel,
and profile settings scopes.
- [x] Move worktree creation logic to the `git_ui` crate to make this
more generic and less agent-specific
- [x] Double-check the remote use case and ensure nothing broke there
- [x] Improve the UX for the detached HEAD state; better invite people
to create a branch
- [x] Migrate `show_branch_icon = true` to `show_branch_status_icon =
true` across nested settings scopes
Suggested .rules additions
When migrating renamed settings keys that can appear in platform
overrides, release-channel overrides, or profiles, prefer the JSON
`migrations::migrate_settings` helper over shallow Tree-sitter key
rewrites unless tests explicitly cover every nested scope that can
contain the key.

- Improved migration of the title bar branch status icon setting.

## Context
This PR introduces a `base` field for settings profiles to allow
profiles to either overlay `user` settings or to overlay `default`,
which is simply zed's defaults (user settings are skipped). I'm not
entirely sure I love `default` because it's a bit confusing (there's a
setting called `default` but the default is `user`). Another idea I had
was `factory` (`user` (default) or `factory`) - curious to hear from the
reviewers. This will be useful for those of us who need to quickly flip
to a default state, or a default state with some customizations on top.
Additionally, from what I can tell, VS Code's profile system is more in
line with what this PR is offering in Zed - profiles overlay the default
settings, not the user's customization layer. So this will be familiar
for those users.
I've had no issue with the migrator, code is pretty simple there, but
would love for @smitbarmase to review the migration to make sure I'm not
missing something.

Release Notes:
- Improved the flexibility of settings profiles by offering a way for
profiles to lay atop of zed defaults, skipping user settings all
together. Settings Profiles now take the following form.
```json5
"Your Profile": {
"base": "user" // or "default"
"settings": {
// ...
},
},
```
This PR changes `agent.play_sound_when_agent_done` from a boolean to an
enum with three options:
- `never` (default)
- `when_hidden`
- `always`
In Settings → Agent, this now appears as a _Play Sound When Agent Done_
dropdown.
Existing settings are migrated automatically:
- `false` → `never`
- `true` → `always`
### Why
A boolean only allowed the sound to be on or off. This change gives
users clearer control over when the agent notification sound should
play.
### Verification
- Added a migrator test for this setting change.
- Manually tested the settings UI, settings migration and the feature
Release Notes:
- Added new agent notification sound options

Closes#47550
Changes the `auto_indent` setting from a boolean to an enum with three
modes:
- **`full`** (default): Adjusts indentation based on syntax context when
typing (previous `true` behavior)
- **`preserve_indent`**: Preserves the current line's indentation on new
lines, but doesn't adjust based on syntax
- **`none`**: No automatic indentation - new lines start at column 0
(previous `false` behavior)
This gives users more control over indentation behavior. Previously,
setting `auto_indent: false` would still preserve indentation on new
lines, which was unexpected.

- Settings migration from boolean to enum values
- Settings UI dropdown renderer

## Add relative line numbers on wrapped lines, take 2
This is a rework of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/39268
that excludes
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/39268/commits/e7096d27a6463f6eb7c2a821637c5773b2460c10.
This commit introduced some line number rendering issues as described in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/41422.
While @ConradIrwin suggested we try to pass in the buffer rows from the
calling method instead of the snapshot, that
appears to have had unintended consequences and I don't think the two
calculations were intended to do the same thing. Hence, this PR has
removed those changes.
This PR also includes the migration fix originally done by @MrSubidubi
in https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/41351.
## Original PR description and release notes.
**Problem:** Current relative line numbering creates a mismatch with
vim-style navigation when soft wrap is enabled. Users must mentally
calculate whether target lines are wrapped segments or logical lines,
making `<n>j/k` navigation unreliable and cognitively demanding.
**How things work today:**
- Real line navigation (`j/k` moves by logical lines): Requires
determining if visible lines are wrapped segments before jumping. Can't
jump to wrapped lines directly.
- Display line navigation (`j/k` moves by display rows): Line numbers
don't correspond to actual row distances for multi-line jumps.
**Proposed solution:** Count and number each display line (including
wrapped segments) for relative numbering. This creates direct
visual-to-navigational correspondence, where the relative number shown
always matches the `<n>j/k` distance needed.
**Benefits:**
- Eliminates mental overhead of distinguishing wrapped vs. logical lines
- Makes relative line numbers consistently actionable regardless of wrap
state
- Preserves intuitive "what you see is what you navigate" principle
- Maintains vim workflow efficiency in narrow window scenarios
Also explained and discussed in

Release Notes:

We've been considering removing workspace-hack for a couple reasons:
- Lukas ran into a situation where its build script seemed to be causing
spurious rebuilds. This seems more likely to be a cargo bug than an
issue with workspace-hack itself (given that it has an empty build
script), but we don't necessarily want to take the time to hunt that
down right now.
- Marshall mentioned hakari interacts poorly with automated crate
updates (in our case provided by rennovate) because you'd need to have
`cargo hakari generate && cargo hakari manage-deps` after their changes
and we prefer to not have actions that make commits.
Currently removing workspace-hack causes our workspace to grow from
~1700 to ~2000 crates being built (depending on platform), which is
mainly a problem when you're building the whole workspace or running
tests across the the normal and remote binaries (which is where
feature-unification nets us the most sharing). It doesn't impact
incremental times noticeably when you're just iterating on `-p zed`, and
we'll hopefully get these savings back in the future when
rust-lang/cargo#14774 (which re-implements the functionality of hakari)
is finished.

Closes#40334
This reverts the change made in #39983, and includes a replacement
migration that will transform formatter settings values consisting of
only `code_action` format steps into the previously deprecated
`code_actions_on_format` in an attempt to restore the behavior to what
it was before the migration that deprecated `code_actions_on_format`.
This PR will result in a modified order in the `code_actions_on_format`
setting if it existed, however the decision was made to explicitly
ignore this for now, as this PR is primarily targeting users who have
already had the deprecation migration run, and no longer have the
`code_actions_on_format` key
Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue with a settings migration that deprecated the
`code_actions_on_format` setting. The `code_actions_on_format` setting
has been un-deprecated, and affected users will have the bad migration
rolled back with an updated migration

Closes#40270
Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue with the settings migration to flatten `code_actions`
format steps where comments would cause enabled code actions to be
omitted from the migrated settings. If you were effected, restoring the
settings file backup and allowing the migration to re-run will result in
a valid settings file
- Fixed an issue where automated settings and keymap file updates would
occasionally assume 4-space indentation
Closes #ISSUE
Release Notes:
- settings: Deprecated `code_actions_on_format` in favor of specifying
code actions to run on format inline in the `formatter` array.
Previously, you would configure code actions to run on format like this:
```json
{
"code_actions_on_format": {
"source.organizeImports": true,
"source.fixAll.eslint": true
}
}
```
This has been migrated to the new format:
```json
{
"formatter": [
{
"code_action": "source.organizeImports"
},
{
"code_action": "source.fixAll.eslint"
}
]
}
```
This change will be automatically migrated for you. If you had an
existing `formatter` setting, the code actions are prepended to your
formatter array (matching the existing behavior). This migration applies
to both global settings and language-specific settings
## Description
Fixes#39376
Add individual FoldAtLevel1-9 actions so users can find fold commands in
the command palette while keeping existing keybindings.
Migrating user keymaps is necessary to have the keybinds show in the command palette.
Closes#39376
### Changes
- `crates/editor/src/actions.rs` - Added FoldAtLevel1-9 action structs
- `crates/editor/src/editor.rs` - Implemented fold_at_level_1-9 handler
methods
- `crates/editor/src/element.rs` - Registered new actions
- `assets/keymaps/*.json` - Updated keybindings to use new individual
actions
### Other Approaches considered
- Adding #[serde(default)] to existing FoldAtLevel(u32) - wouldn't make
it discoverable
- Creating a single action with enumerated variants - idk about this
that well.

This commit fixes an issue where opening zed using `--user-data-dir`
with an empty directory would cause the first run to display a "Failed
to migrate settings" error.
This was caused by the migrator attempting to migrate an empty string,
so if that's the case, we'll simply return `Ok(None)` and avoid
attempting to migrate anything at all.
Relates to #39400
