edit_prediction: Adjust to support Ollama to be used for AI edit prediction (#63519)
# Objective Fix two related bugs in the Ollama edit-prediction provider config (`Settings > AI > Edit Prediction > Configure Providers`): 1. The Ollama model dropdown showed only a single model (the currently-configured one), regardless of what models were actually available on the configured server. 2. Ollama never appeared as a selectable option in the "Active Provider" list, even when fully configured. Both bugs shared the same root cause: several places in the edit-prediction code path read from the Assistant's separate Ollama *language model* provider (`language_models.ollama.*`, used by the AI panel/agent) instead of the edit-prediction-specific `edit_predictions.ollama.*` settings. These are two independent Ollama connections that can point at different servers, so the edit-prediction UI was effectively showing/gating on the wrong provider's state. This changes fixes #47393 ## Solution - **Model dropdown**: Added `edit_prediction::ollama::fetch_models_from_server`, which queries `/api/tags` directly against the edit-prediction's own configured `api_url`, independent of the Assistant's Ollama provider. The dropdown now re-fetches from that URL every time it's opened, so changing the server URL and reopening the dropdown shows the new server's models. - **Model filtering**: Fetched models are filtered to those Zed can infer a completion prompt format for (`infer_prompt_format`), so chat-only and embedding models (e.g. `nomic-embed-text`, `llama3:70b`) no longer clutter the list. This function was extracted from `edit_prediction_registry.rs` (previously private, used only for prompt-format resolution) into `edit_prediction::fim` so it can be shared between the dropdown filter and the existing routing logic — same behavior, no duplication. - **Provider visibility**: `get_available_providers` now gates Ollama's visibility on `edit_predictions.ollama.is_some()` (i.e. whether the user has configured a model), matching the existing pattern already used for the OpenAI-Compatible provider, instead of checking the unrelated Assistant provider's authentication state. Removed the now-dead `ollama::is_available`/`ensure_authenticated` functions and the startup call that existed solely to make that broken check eventually pass. ## Testing - Added unit tests for `infer_prompt_format` covering all known model families (qwen/codellama/deepseek-coder/starcoder/codestral/glm/zeta/sweep) and confirming unsupported models (chat/embedding) correctly return `None`. - Added an async test for `fetch_models_from_server` using a fake HTTP client, verifying it filters to FIM-capable models and returns them sorted. - Added a regression test, `test_ollama_provider_routes_to_fim_model`, verifying that Ollama + a known model (`qwen2.5-coder:3b`) resolves to `EditPredictionProviderConfig::Zed(EditPredictionModel::Fim { format: Qwen })` — this exercises the exact routing path underlying the provider-visibility fix. - Manually verified end-to-end against a real local Ollama server: configured a custom `api_url`, confirmed the model dropdown populated with the server's actual models, selected one, and confirmed Ollama appeared in and could be selected from the Active Provider list, with predictions successfully returned. - Ran `cargo check` and `./script/clippy` on all touched crates (`edit_prediction`, `settings_ui`, `edit_prediction_ui`, `zed`); no warnings. - Not tested: the `get_available_providers` gating change itself has no direct test (it's a one-line settings check whose underlying resolution is covered by the `zed`-crate regression test above); Windows/Linux were not tested, only macOS. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [X] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [X] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [X] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [X] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [X] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase <details> <summary>Click to view showcase</summary> Now when we open the dropdown model selector on Ollama section we will see the available models in the current server that we are trying to use <img width="903" height="755" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/873c662b-3624-4530-811c-6f07ab518e35" /> Now Ollama will be displayed as provider in the edit prediction providers dropdown <img width="903" height="755" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9dfe737d-6527-4ecd-9803-3d0959075c34" /> </details> --- Release Notes: - Fixed Ollama edit predictions not appearing as a selectable provider and the model dropdown showing only a single model instead of the models available on the configured server |

outline_panel: Add setting to hide symbols in multi-buffer views (#63404)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/60242 # Objective When reviewing a branch diff — or project search results — the outline panel lists every affected excerpt and symbol beneath each file. On a diff touching more than a handful of files, this consumes so much vertical space that you cannot see the list of changed files at all, which is usually the thing you want the panel for. Existing settings don't cover this: - `expand_outlines_with_depth: 0` still renders excerpt rows and top-level symbol rows. - Collapsing a file row in the panel is coupled to folding that buffer in the editor, so it can't be used purely to tidy the panel. ## Solution A display-only mode that reduces multi-buffer views to just the directory/file tree. - New `outline_panel.multi_buffer_hide_symbols` setting (default `false`). When enabled, multi-buffer views render only directory, file and folded-directory rows — excerpt, symbol and search-match rows are hidden. - New `outline panel: toggle symbols` action, plus a button in the panel footer, which toggles an in-memory per-panel override of the setting (the same pattern as `editor: toggle inlay hints`). Changing the setting clears the override, so the setting wins. - Single-file views are exempt, and the footer button is not shown there — the panel contains only symbols in that case, so hiding them would leave it empty. - The filter is display-only: `collapsed_entries` and editor buffer folding are never touched. - Outline fetching is skipped while the mode is active, so large diffs don't pay for outlines that will not be rendered. Turning the mode off re-triggers fetching. This adds one new icon, `file_code_off`, used by the footer button when symbols are hidden. cc @zed-industries/design for review per the icon guidelines — it is `file_code` with the slash and outline gaps from `file_ignored`, keeping the parts of the chevrons that fall on the near side of the slash. ## Testing Three new tests in `crates/outline_panel/src/outline_panel.rs`: - `test_hide_symbols_in_multibuffer` — outline rows are present by default; only `Fs`/`FoldedDirs` entries remain once the mode is enabled via the setting (which also exercises the settings observer) and via the action; outline rows return when it is toggled off, confirming outlines are re-fetched; asserts `collapsed_entries` is unchanged at every step, covering the display-only guarantee. - `test_hide_symbols_exempts_singleton` — a single-file view still renders its outline with the setting enabled. - `test_hide_symbols_hides_search_matches` — project search match rows are hidden while files and directories still render, and return when toggled off. `cargo test -p outline_panel` (15 passing), `cargo test -p icons`, `cargo test -p settings_ui -p settings_content`, and `./script/clippy` on the touched crates are all green. Tested manually on macOS against a branch diff, project search results, and single-file buffers, checking both the setting and the action (from the panel footer button and from the command palette with focus outside the panel), and that expanding/collapsing directories and editor folding still behave as before. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase <!-- Screenshots go here: branch-diff before/after, footer button icon states, search before/after, single-file exemption --> | | Symbols shown (default) | Symbols hidden | | --- | --- | --- | | **Footer toggle** | <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/393f128d-1a7c-43a8-97b8-8176a07b45c7" width="260"> | <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/87c60dd4-d5b7-48f8-9255-226c4a94a586" width="260"> | | **Branch diff** | <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/79357325-7d7d-40f7-8067-4ae59a824f87" width="420"> | <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8a3bbc7e-90d4-4638-9f1d-1ba3091eccfd" width="420"> | | **Project search** | <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/76e3cf18-d624-42f8-8801-f496bf54a552" width="420"> | <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/2a34e899-b9f4-465e-b571-75d3d54d00eb" width="420"> | Single-file views are unaffected — symbols still render, and the toggle is not offered: <img src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/76c47884-96db-4071-bcc1-931c4283e36f" width="640"> --- Release Notes: - Fixed too many outlines shown per excerpt in the outline panel. Reduce LLVM IR bloat in closure funnels (#63426)
Follow-up to https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/63232 Cuts closure monomorphization in settings and editor: settings file updates now share one boxed write-pipeline instantiation instead of inlining the `SettingsContent` clone, both `serde_json::to_value` calls, and the JSON diff at every call site; `Editor::register_action` and the settings enum dropdown get the same treatment. Behavior and public signatures are unchanged; thin generic shims remain. Symbol table of the release binary: Before: `update_settings_file_inner` 229 instantiations, inlined `serde_json` `SerializeMap` machinery 6547 copies After: 3 instantiations, 673 copies (-89.7%); `render_dropdown` is no longer instantiated at all With sccache disabled, `cargo clean` and `cargo build --release -p zed`: Before: zed binary 420677880 bytes After: zed binary 396999464 bytes (-5.6%, -23.7MB) Release Notes: - N/A |

editor: Add language detection for untitled buffers (#61412)
# Objective Closes #4868. Reintroduce automatic language detection for user-created untitled buffers without allowing it to override language choices made by users or owning surfaces. More details: + https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/61201 + https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/61351 ## Solution VS Code distinguishes between inferred and explicitly selected languages, and only continues automatic detection in the former state. This change introduces a buffer-local opt-in flag with the same purpose. It defaults to disabled and is enabled only for user-created untitled buffers and restored untitled buffers that did not persist a language. Choosing a language through the language picker disables detection, while automatically detected languages remain eligible for later redetection. Buffers whose language is assigned by their owning surface, such as Channel Notes, never opt in. Rather than adding persisted state or changing the database schema, restoration reuses the existing optional serialized language. An opted-in buffer that remains Plain Text is serialized without a language and resumes detection after restoration. Once automatic detection has selected a language, that language is serialized normally and restoration leaves detection disabled, effectively treating it as an explicit selection. This also matches VS Code's effective default after restoration. Candidate selection adopts VS Code's confidence-group filtering. Results below the minimum confidence are discarded, and candidate groups are accepted only after a clear confidence gap. The detector then selects the first available Zed language without eagerly loading every candidate. I then added a separate switching rule: Zed keeps the current language unless another candidate has a clear confidence advantage, reducing language changes as model scores fluctuate during editing. Model inference runs off-thread on a bounded sample, and stale results are discarded. I also evaluated penalizing YAML and using stricter global switching thresholds, but neither reliably resolves the ambiguity between Markdown and YAML. In the reproduction from #61351, Betlang assigns YAML more than 80% confidence during editing and peaks around 90%. This is reasonable from the content alone: `#` denotes a YAML comment, while `-` denotes a sequence item. Adding ordinary prose or a fenced code block shifts the model strongly toward Markdown. A fixed penalty would overfit this example and risk suppressing legitimate YAML detection. Since known-language buffers do not opt in and manual language selection takes precedence, I consider this level of ambiguity acceptable and prefer not to introduce language-specific score tuning. Model inference itself is fast. As noted in #61201: > In release builds on Linux with an Intel Core i5-13600KF, the `betlang::detect` call alone typically completes within 3 ms when processing the maximum sampled input. The main concern is the work surrounding inference. Without debouncing, rapid typing creates a snapshot and launches a background detection task on every keystroke, while the detected language may change before the user has finished typing. This change therefore adds a 200 ms debounce delay, allowing detection to run and update the language only after the user pauses. ## Testing Automated coverage verifies that short inputs remain Plain Text, sufficient Rust content is detected as Rust, replacing it with Go content triggers redetection, and manually selecting Plain Text prevents subsequent automatic changes. Restoration coverage verifies that a stored language keeps detection disabled, while an empty language-less untitled buffer resumes detection. Beyond the automated tests, I manually tested automatic language detection while editing untitled buffers. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/103fc731-e12e-48d6-ae89-03978f1c9d74 --- Release Notes: - Added automatic language detection for untitled buffers. --------- Co-authored-by: Max Stevens <maxstevens2708@gmail.com> Co-authored-by: Christopher Biscardi <chris@christopherbiscardi.com> |

gpui: Fix stale pending input when a window is blurred (#63271)
This prepares for the keybinding hints PR. To reproduce, press `ctrl-b` in a GPUI app with `ctrl-b h` and `ctrl-b j` bindings, then call `window.blur()`. The live pending state clears, but observers still report `ctrl-b`. `Window::blur` now clears pending input and notifies observers after the current effect cycle. I don't think we currently exercise this path in Zed, and I was only able to reproduce it with an example GPUI app. Release Notes: - N/A |

Enable project search on type by default (#62506)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/9318 Most of the diff is tests. Notable behavior changes during this mode, compared to current mode: * unsaved changes in multi buffer won't spawn any "save or not" pop-ups during typing — submitting the query still does it, as before. Unsaved files will stay so after being sorted out on typing: we cannot save them by default as file-less buffers need a save modal; Zed should already be able to persist and restore such changes on restart. * gutter may jump during search, if new excerpts with large line numbers appear during query input — yet it would not shrink back to avoid excessive flickering and rewraps Release Notes: - Enabled project search on type by default (use `{ "search": { "search_on_type": false } }` to restore the previous behavior) |

settings_ui: Add Clear button to the search field (#56033)
This PR adds a 'clear' button to the search field in the Settings window. The button becomes visible only when the field contains text. Clicking the button clears the search field, which also resets the navigation list. Empty: <img width="213" height="41" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/03f97367-1036-453f-816a-5cbad219951c" /> With a search term: <img width="213" height="38" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/518047f4-c397-4a34-bb2f-147fcf37dc69" /> There are similar UIs, like the macOS and Windows System Settings windows, and even Zed's 'Help' menu filter (on macOS), where the field acts as a 'live filter', updating results on each keystroke, and the 'clear' action is more convenient than backspacing. The first commit adds the button and the 'on click' functionality. If the Zed team approves this change, I would also like to use the `escape` key to clear the field. I have done some work on this, but there are several issues and I would like some feedback before committing the appropriate changes: 1. The `escape` binding to clear the field could arguably be built-in (not user-configurable) since it's the standard key for this type of action, and it may not make sense to allow other key combinations since this field accepts keyboard input. Would the team approve a built-in key binding, or must it be bound to a user-configurable `Action`? 2. For the Settings Window, `escape` is currently bound to the `CloseWindow` Action by default. If the search field is focused, pressing the `escape` key should clear the field, but not close the window. - If a new `Action` is used to clear the field (containing text), the binding to that `Action` can have a more specific context (`SettingsWindow > NavigationMenu && search`) than the `Action` on the window (`SettingsWindow > NavigationMenu`), so the window won't close … but if the field is *already empty*, should `escape` close the window (and is there a way to re-enable the `CloseWindow` action in that case)? - If a `KeyDownEvent` listener for `escape` is used to clear the field, the `CloseWindow` Action still closes the window – is there a way to cancel the `CloseWindow` Action in this case? 3. There is at least one other location with a similar 'live filter' field, namely the Filter field in the Keymap Editor, where this same functionality could be implemented. (I could update that too if this PR is approved). Are there other similar instances in Zed? This 'clear filter' UX should be consistent in all those locations. Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content is consistent with the [UI/UX checklist](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) - [ ] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable (I could not find an existing issue or discussion about this feature.) Add configurable inline completion debounce timeout (#61568)
# Objective Add configurable inline completion debounce timeout Fixes/implements #23159 ## Solution I initially wanted to make a global setting for this, but it would conflict with hardcoded debounces in codestral (150ms) and copilot (75ms) which I assume are there for a reason. So I ended up using the same mechanism used for the hardcoded debounce in Codestral (`DEBOUNCE_TIMEOUT`) and Copilot (`COPILOT_DEBOUNCE_TIMEOUT`) and made it accessible and configurable for all providers. Also fixed a bug with `DelayMs` `Display` trait adding "ms" into the input field which then fails to parse something like "150ms" as a `u64` by implementing `FromStr` which strips the "ms" suffix if present. So now both "1000" and "1000ms" are parsed correctly and apply. If the parsing fix is not relevant enough I can open a separate issue + PR for that (and the inconsistent use and therefore display of `Option<u64>` vs `Option<DelayMs>` in other ms input fields). ## Testing #### Did you test these changes? If so, how? Added a separate test which passes `test_refresh_prediction_from_buffer_honors_debounce_duration` Manually tested with openapi compatible prediction All other tests in affected crates pass (`cargo test -p settings_content -p settings_ui -p editor -p edit_prediction -p language `) #### How can other people (reviewers) test your changes? Is there anything specific they need to know? Open provider settings and adjust debounce, then see how long it takes for a prediction to render. #### If relevant, what platforms did you test these changes on, and are there any important ones you can't test? Tested on Fedora 43 KDE, but it shouldn't matter as none of the affected code is platform specific. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/14efa628-765e-4c2a-ac44-01aaa3657097 --- Release Notes: - Added configurable inline completion debounce timeout, fixes #23159 --------- Co-authored-by: Ben Kunkle <ben@zed.dev> |

gpui_macos: Add simple fullscreen mode that covers the notch (#60020)
Closes #60013 # Objective Right now Zed can go full screen but it does not allow you to fix the hole screen, by that I mean that Zed can go behind the notch so you don't have extra useless room left. ## Solution You can now use the `fullscreen_mode` = `simple` setting to use the new simple full screen feature, that lives besides the normal full screen feature. But allows you to have an option to go 100% full screen without losing any useless space on your macbook screen. **Note** this is mostly usefull when you have a macbook that has a notch whitch is kinda in the way of your work flow. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase **Before** <img width="5712" height="4284" alt="IMG_0339" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9f908ffd-7cef-4999-a454-c80f72c40dc8" /> **After** (Note now Zed is behind your notch when using the simple full screen feature) <img width="5712" height="4284" alt="IMG_0360" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/5917ed4d-2a64-4464-a794-bc46fd034521" /> --- Release Notes: - Added support for simple fullscreen mode using the `fullscreen_mode` setting, set it to `simple` to try it out. |

agent: Add ask_user tool using elicitation forms (#61497)
## Summary Adds a first-party `ask_user` tool to Zed's native agent (`crates/agent`) that lets the agent ask the user a question and get an answer back through a proper **elicitation form** rather than free-form chat text. This is a step towards the interactive-question experience requested in [discussion #48784](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/48784) (implement the ACP elicitation spec for agent questions). Zed already renders elicitation forms client-side; this wires the native agent up to that existing rail so the agent can drive single-select and/or free-text prompts. ## What it does The tool takes: - `question` — the prompt shown to the user - `options` — optional list of selectable choices (single-select) - `allow_free_text` — whether the user may type a custom answer instead of picking an option The agent decides the shape of each question: | `options` | `allow_free_text` | Result | | --- | --- | --- | | 2+ | `false` | Single-select only | | 2+ | `true` | Single-select with a free-text "other" field | | empty | `true` | Free-text only | A typed answer takes precedence over a selected option, and the tool always resolves (a cancelled or failed elicitation is reported back to the agent rather than hanging). ## Demo https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9d438d87-af65-4fa2-b500-b1232007d0a0 ## Implementation - `thread.rs` — new `ThreadEvent::Elicitation(ElicitationRequest)` variant plus `ToolCallEventStream::request_elicitation`, mirroring the existing `prompt_for_decision` permission rail. - `agent.rs` — handles the elicitation event by building a session-scoped `acp::CreateElicitationRequest` and routing it through `AcpThread::request_elicitation`, piping the response back to the tool. - `tools/ask_user_tool.rs` — the tool itself, including schema construction and response extraction. - Registered in the `write` and `ask` profiles and excluded from the tool-permissions setup UI. No client-side UI changes were needed — the existing elicitation form rendering handles it. ## Tests `cargo test -p agent ask_user` — 5 unit tests covering schema construction, validation, and accept/decline/cancel handling. Release Notes: - Added an `ask_user` tool that lets the agent ask the user a question with selectable options and/or free-text input, rendered as an elicitation form |

editor: Fix buffer header context menu line height in multibuffers (#61923)
## Objective Right-clicking a buffer header in a multibuffer showed a context menu whose item spacing did not match other context menus. The menu is drawn via a deferred draw, which inherits the editor's text style stack, so its line height followed `buffer_line_height` instead of the default UI line height. This is the same root cause as #24504, which #25172 fixed for the editor's mouse context menu and completion popovers. The buffer header menu was a remaining call site. ## Solution `ContextMenu` now applies the default (`comfortable`) line height itself in `render`, next to its existing rem size and font family normalization, so menus render the same regardless of where they are opened from. This fixes the all workarounds and the need for them too: the workaround in `layout_mouse_context_menu` is removed, and the buffer header ends up needing no changes at all. The completions and code actions popovers keep their override in `element.rs`: they are not `ui::ContextMenu`s and compute their sizes with eager `window.line_height()` reads while being built, so styling on the elements they return cannot cover them. Migrating them could be a follow-up. ## Testing - `cargo check --workspace` passes, `./script/clippy` on the touched crates passes. - Manual: set `"buffer_line_height": "standard"` (or any extreme custom value to see it better), open a multibuffer (e.g. project search), right-click a buffer header, and compare the menu with another context menu (e.g. a tab's) — spacing matches. The editor's mouse context menu, which lost its own override, renders as before, and with default settings there is no visual change anywhere. - Tested on macOS, change is platform-independent styling. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [ ] Tests cover the new/changed behavior (visual styling fix; menu text styles have no existing test coverage) - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase Regular context menu: <img width="425" height="164" alt="A context menu elsewhere in the app, showing normal item spacing" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/1fc13981-b394-444f-883a-ce3ef462c386" /> Before: <img width="425" height="164" alt="Buffer header context menu before the fix, with tighter item spacing following the custom buffer_line_height" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9774076c-7e0c-41dd-b54f-53de58b24336" /> After: <img width="425" height="164" alt="Buffer header context menu after the fix, with item spacing matching other context menus" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ae76e37c-8e39-474c-8a5e-e229e69173fb" /> --- Release Notes: - Fixed the file header context menu in multibuffers not matching other context menus' spacing when a custom `buffer_line_height` is set. --------- Co-authored-by: Claude Fable 5 <noreply@anthropic.com> Co-authored-by: zed-zippy[bot] <234243425+zed-zippy[bot]@users.noreply.github.com> |

Make file scanner less eager in non-git-tracked directory trees (#62583)
Fixes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/35780 Collab schema migration PR: https://github.com/zed-industries/cloud/pull/3422 The corresponding database schema migration has been created in the Cloud repo and applied to the production database. Before, Zed scanned each and every entry in the tree down from the directory it was opened in, except gitignored files and scan exclusions. The approach is unchanged, if Zed detects it was open inside a git repository: e.g. the directory open in Zed contains `.git` directory. For the rest of the projects, 2 optimizations are made: * Limit the depth of file scan traversal. Now, `file_scan_depth` (default `5`) restricts Zed from traversing any directory that has same number or more segments in its file path. Such directories behave similar to gitignored directories: their contents is not available in file finder, project search and project panel, but can be lazily traversed when the directory is expanded (e.g. project panel expands it or a nested file is open by path via terminal, etc.) To indicate that to the users, a status entry is shown firs time the limitation is hit in the project: <img width="858" height="133" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/7da6cfbb-98b4-4cc3-bf2a-8902a9597a15" /> * During the scan, any git repositories that are not direct children of the directory open in Zed (depth >= 2), are traversed and indexed normally, but their git metadata is never fetched eagerly. Only when Zed opens a buffer from that repo the git metadata is fetched and applied. All that combined now uses a way more moderate amount of CPU and RAM when opening `~`: <img width="1717" height="368" alt="Screenshot 2026-08-13 at 17 43 53" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/ec83e2a9-f7cc-452b-8eb7-af158284ca4e" /> File scan inclusions and exclusions are considered still for such projects. Set `file_scan_depth` to `0` to enable old behavior. The setting is supported in the project settings, so custom values can be set based on the project's structure. --- Release Notes: - Fixed Zed using a lot of memory and CPU in large, non-git-tracked, directory trees |

editor: Add configurable git gutter width setting (#61304)
## Summary
Adds a `gutter.git_gutter_width` setting that lets users pin the width,
in pixels, of the git diff hunk indicators in the editor gutter.
Previously the width was always derived from the buffer font size
(`floor(0.275 * line_height)`), which can render too thin or too thick
depending on font family and display pixel density. This adds an
optional override:
```json
{
"gutter": {
"git_gutter_width": 6
}
}
```
When the setting is unset (`null`, the default), the width continues to
scale with the buffer font size, so existing behavior is unchanged.
## Motivation
Requested in [discussion
#27799](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/27799). Beyond
the width itself, participants noted the git hunk hit target is
extremely narrow and hard to click. Because the hunk hitbox reuses the
painted strip bounds, setting a wider `git_gutter_width` also widens the
clickable area, addressing that complaint with the same setting.
## Changes
- `settings_content`: new `git_gutter_width: Option<f32>` on
`GutterContent`.
- `editor`: mirror field on the resolved `Gutter`; `gutter_strip_width`
now consults the setting, and the value flows through `diff_hunk_bounds`
(including the deleted-hunk marker) and the gutter layout anchors for
line numbers, folds, and expand toggles.
- `settings` (VS Code import): pass through the new field.
- Docs + `default.json`: document the new setting.
## Notes
- `Eq` was dropped from `GutterContent`/`Gutter` because `f32` is not
`Eq`; this matches the existing `EditorSettingsContent` convention for
float-bearing settings.
Release Notes:
- Added a `gutter.git_gutter_width` setting to configure the width of
git diff indicators in the editor gutter

git: Add diff_base setting for showing changes since the default branch (#61501)
# Objective Let git indicators — the editor gutter, file colors, and `git::Diff` — show all changes on the current branch relative to its merge base with the default branch, instead of only uncommitted changes. Supersedes #60398; thanks to @samuelcolvin for the original implementation and motivation. Closes FR-135 ## Solution - New `git.diff_base` setting (`"head"` | `"default_branch"`), applied live and toggleable per session from the editor controls menu ("Diff Against Default Branch"). - Statuses come from a real merge-base-to-worktree tree diff (`git diff --merge-base`), so local edits that revert branch changes correctly show as unchanged. - `GitStore` shares one `DiffBufferList` per repository with the Branch Diff view; `repo_snapshots` and `project_path_git_status` keep returning index/worktree truth, while display surfaces use separate `display_*` APIs. - `BufferDiff` now records what its base is (`DiffBaseKind`); hunks whose base isn't HEAD are read-only in the gutter — stage/restore buttons and keybindings are inert, so committed work can't be silently rewritten. - `git::Diff` follows the setting; new `git::DiffHead` always opens the HEAD diff; `git::BranchDiff` is renamed `git::DiffBranch` (deprecated alias kept). Tradeoffs / known limitations: - Hunk-level staging is unavailable while in `default_branch` mode (whole-file staging via the git panel still works). Staging just the uncommitted sub-ranges of a branch hunk is a follow-up. - Remote hosts running an older server ignore the new `GetTreeDiff.includes_worktree` proto field and degrade to committed-changes-only branch diffs. - Repositories with no resolvable default branch fall back to HEAD-relative behavior; a failed first resolution retries on the next branch-list change. ## Testing - Real-git-repo tests for the merge-base-to-worktree diff's edge cases: files recreated after index deletion, committed deletions recreated on disk, and symlinks. - GPUI tests for status semantics (a branch change reverted on disk shows clean), `git::Diff` routing, live setting changes, and read-only hunk enforcement (restore/stage leave buffer and index untouched). ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable --- Release Notes: - Git: Added a `git.diff_base` setting (`"head"` or `"default_branch"`) that makes the editor gutter, file colors, and diff view show all changes on the current branch since its merge base with the default branch, instead of only uncommitted changes. --------- Co-authored-by: Ben Kunkle <ben@zed.dev> |

agent: Re-enable sandbox (#61711)
Fixes the bug that made us remove the sandbox. The bug in question was very dumb: - there is sophisticated machinery for detecting whether a user-granted writable path is swapped out for a symlink in the timing gap between approval and sandbox creation - there was no equivalent machinery to do the same for the (much larger) gap between a user *persisting an approval* (either for the current thread or permanently via settings) - The fix is essentially to store canonical (i.e. absolute and symlink-free at all depths) paths as the source of truth, but retain the raw path for display purposes - On WSL, there is extra care needed becasue of the bidirectional mounting (i.e. `/mnt/c/...` and `\\wsl.localhost\Ubuntu\...`). In particular, `/mnt/c/...` paths, since their inodes do not necessarily pin NTFS file references, weaken the sandbox guarantees, and so we need some extra UI to call this out and docs etc... title_bar: Add show_worktree_name setting (#61137)
Adds a title_bar.show_worktree_name setting (default: true) that hides the worktree picker button in the title bar, mirroring how show_branch_name gates the branch picker. The "/" separator only renders when both buttons are visible, and the container is omitted entirely when both are hidden. The setting is hide-only: it deliberately does not join the render_project_items gate, so configurations with show_branch_name and show_project_items both disabled keep hiding the whole group as before. Requested in discussion [zed-industries/zed#54902](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/54902). # Objective The worktree name is always present in the title bar even when unused. Unlike the branch name it has no dedicated option to disable it. Requested in discussion [zed-industries/zed#54902](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/54902). ## Solution Adds a `title_bar.show_worktree_name` setting (default: true) that hides the worktree picker button in the title bar, mirroring how show_branch_name gates the branch picker. settings_ui: Fix MCP server toggle not updating in UI (#60552)
Fixes an issue where toggling an MCP server on/off in Settings → AI → MCP Servers does not update the toggle state in the UI immediately. ## Root Cause There were two issues: 1. `ContextServerStore::update_server_state()` and `remove_server()` emitted `ServerStatusChangedEvent` but did not call `cx.notify()`, so Settings UI observers were not informed to re-render. 2. `render_toggle_switch()` was bound to `is_running` (runtime status) instead of `is_enabled` (settings state). ## Solution - Add `cx.notify()` in both methods after emitting the status event. - Change toggle to read `settings.enabled()` and rename parameter from `is_running` to `is_enabled`. ## Testing - `cargo check -p settings_ui -p project` passes. - `cargo fmt --check` passes. - Manual verification: open Settings → AI → MCP Servers, toggle a server, observe immediate UI update. --- Release Notes: - Fixed MCP server toggle not updating immediately in Settings UI. --------- Co-authored-by: dino <dinojoaocosta@gmail.com> |

Round window corners on the sidebar side on Linux (#61229)
On Linux with client-side decorations, opening the workspace sidebar squared off the window corners on the sidebar's side while the rest of the window stayed rounded: Before: <img width="366" height="239" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/e0ee8d28-6143-42ea-bfd2-10d069df5492" /> After: <img width="426" height="219" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/51d2979d-0103-4742-90bd-a97f5837d99b" /> Previously, `client_side_decorations` took a `border_radius_tiling` override that `MultiWorkspace` used to deliberately square the window shape on the sidebar's side, since the sidebar painted a square background that would otherwise poke out past the rounded window border. The title bar and status bar already skip rounding their corners on the sidebar side, implying the sidebar is expected to own those window corners — it just never rounded them. This PR makes the sidebar round its outer corners the same way the title bar and status bar do (including overlapping the 1px window border on untiled edges to avoid a transparent gap in the rounded corners), and removes the now-unneeded `border_radius_tiling` parameter so the window border and backdrop round purely based on actual tiling state. Only applies when the window uses client-side decorations, so macOS and Windows are unaffected. Fixes #54724 Release Notes: - Fixed square window corners on the sidebar side of client-decorated (Linux) windows when the workspace sidebar is open. --------- Co-authored-by: Danilo Leal <67129314+danilo-leal@users.noreply.github.com> |

search: Add LSP location pickers for references, definitions, and diagnostics (#59838)
# Objective Closes #59829 Provide a filterable, preview-backed picker for LSP results as an alternative to the multi-buffer view, for references, definitions, implementations. ## Solution Update the 3 existing LSP actions (definitions, implementations, find all references) to add a `open_results_in` parameter which accepts either `multi_buffer` (default) or `picker` to show the results in a filterable picker with preview. This behavior can be configured globally in the settings via `lsp_results_location`. UX: - The 3 existing LSP actions each accept a `open_results_in` parameter so that each action can be configuring individually with a custom keybind - The `lsp_results_location` global setting can be used to set a default behavior with `open_results_in == None` - Go to definition falls back to find all references (if configured) on empty results which is consistent with the non-picker path - Results are grouped by file; each row shows the line number and the syntax-highlighted source line with the match emphasized. - Typing filters by line text or path; the preview updates with the selection. - Enter/click opens the selection, `cmd/ctrl-enter` opens it in a split, and re-invoking the command toggles the picker closed. - Empty results show a toast so the command never silently does nothing. - Note: the new pickers do not open on cmd-click, only when invoked via the command palette or keybind ## Testing - No automated tests yet — holding for first-round feedback on the approach and UX before adding tests. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [ ] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [ ] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/41538f23-9b54-4dfc-bfa7-a61564a675a8 --- Release Notes: - The find all references, go to definitions, and go to implementations LSP actions can be configured to open results in a picker with preview instead of a multibuffer. |

Deleting a skill from the settings UI permanently removed its directory from `~/.agents/skills`, which is shared with other tools that read the same unified skills directory. Now we move it to the system trash instead so it's recoverable. Release Notes: - Deleting a skill now moves it to the system trash instead of permanently deleting it. |

a11y: Landmarks and menu improvements (#60397)
Fixes menu a11y, and adds landmarks with `F6`-navigation. Also fixes a GPUI bug, and adds debug actions for dumping a11y tree info. Since `F6` was already in use by the pause debugger keybind, also tightens up the debugger keybind context so they require an active debugger session. When there is one active, `F6` stays as pause debugger. `ctrl-F6` always works to go to the next landmark. Also adds an "accessible mode" setting. Currently, this only controls whether we show all menus all the time, but I suspect it will expand significantly in the future. Also adds `.aria_keyshortcuts()` API, but it's not wired up within accesskit adapters, so is not yet reported to screen readers. --- Release Notes: - N/A or Added/Fixed/Improved ... |

Revert "settings_ui: Shrink constraint on minimum window width (#60786)" (#60903)
Allowing the settings UI to shrink smaller than that size can easily cause UI states where the whole window becomes unusable. The previously defined 900px size was defined so that those states did not happen. I appreciate how having such minimum size can be a bit of a hassle when the settings window is used with window managers, but given it's such a transient window (i.e., one which you won't always have open all the time) I think it's better to stay on the trade-off side of safety here. As a quick example, it doesn't make sense to me to allow the UI to reach this state: <img width="300" alt="Screenshot 2026-07-13 at 9 26@2x" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/f2aebe21-293b-468f-b03e-37cd7305a9c5" /> --- Release Notes: - N/A |

settings_ui: Shrink constraint on minimum window width (#60786)
# Objective Right now the minimum width of the settings window is 900px, this makes it so that when I open it with my window manager (aerospace), it goes off the screen on the right side. https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/e47c1f13-0b5c-49e1-9a1e-4d3b494eca8d ## Solution There is a comment, that says: ``` // Don't make the settings window thinner than this, // otherwise, it gets unusable. Users with smaller res monitors // can customize the height, but not the width. width: px(900.0), height: px(240.0), ``` the comment and limit was added in #44505, which added the edit prediction provider ui. Now in the past, in #51878 I fixed a bug with the way that the edit prediction provider and some of the other sub menu type pages in the settings menu displayed. There isn't really any record of what specifically made the window unusable below 900px besides the issue that I fixed in #51878. ## Testing I tested it by just sort of poking around the different settings pages, especially the ones I fixed in #51878, and every thing seems totally fine to me. That said I haven't exhaustively checked every page and if there was any more information on what that comment was referring to that would be awesome. ## Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content adheres to Zed's UI standards ([UX/UI](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) and [icon](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/icons/README.md) guidelines) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable ## Showcase How it looks after the change: https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/9258f51f-5da5-4f4c-997d-7f09a3448e4b --- Release Notes: - settings_ui: Allowed window widths below 900px |

Add support for format_on_save only changed lines (#49964)
## Summary Introduces `format_on_save` variants that format only modified lines, limiting formatting to lines changed since the last commit. This prevents massive diffs when editing legacy codebases. Aligns with VS Code's `editor.formatOnSaveMode` naming: - `"modifications"` — formats only git-diffed lines. Requires source control; skips formatting if no diff is available. - `"modifications_if_available"` — formats only git-diffed lines, falling back to full-file formatting for untracked files, when source control is unavailable, or when the LSP does not support range formatting. Also supports importing equivalent VS Code settings (`formatOnSaveMode`). This PR uses the range-based whitespace/newline infrastructure from the dependency PR above. ## Changes <details> <summary><b>New settings, modified ranges computation, VS Code import</b></summary> ### New settings (`language.rs`, `default.json`, `all-settings.md`) Two new `FormatOnSave` variants: `Modifications` and `ModificationsIfAvailable`. ### Modified ranges computation (`items.rs`) - `compute_format_decision()` — reads `format_on_save` setting across all buffers, determines whether to use ranged formatting (`Ranges`), full formatting (`Full`), or skip (`Skip`). - `compute_modified_ranges()` — extracts modified line ranges from git diff hunks via `BufferDiffSnapshot`. - `is_empty_range()` — helper to detect deletion-only hunks that produce no formatable content. The `save()` method calls `compute_format_decision()` and dispatches accordingly. ### Modifications mode in `lsp_store.rs` - Adds `FormatOnSave::Modifications | FormatOnSave::ModificationsIfAvailable` to the formatter selection match arm. - `ModificationsIfAvailable` falls back to full-file formatting when ranged formatting produces no results. ### VS Code settings import (`vscode_import.rs`, `settings_store.rs`) Imports `editor.formatOnSaveMode` mapping: - `"modifications"` → `FormatOnSave::Modifications` - `"modificationsIfAvailable"` → `FormatOnSave::ModificationsIfAvailable` - `"file"` → `FormatOnSave::On` </details> ## Tests - `test_modifications_format_on_save` — basic modifications mode formatting with dirty buffer - `test_modifications_format_no_changes` — clean buffer triggers no formatting - `test_modifications_format_lsp_no_range_support` — LSP without range formatting skips entirely for `Modifications` - `test_modifications_format_lsp_returns_empty_edits` — empty edits handled gracefully - `test_modifications_format_multiple_hunks` — two non-adjacent edits produce two separate range formatting requests --- Self-Review Checklist: - [x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability - [x] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments - [x] The content is consistent with the [UI/UX checklist](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/CONTRIBUTING.md#uiux-checklist) - [x] Tests cover the new/changed behavior - [x] Performance impact has been considered and is acceptable Closes #16509 Depends on #53942 Release Notes: - Added `modifications` and `modifications_if_available` options to `format_on_save`, which format only git-changed lines instead of the entire file - When using modifications mode, `remove_trailing_whitespace_on_save` and `ensure_final_newline_on_save` are also scoped to changed lines, preventing unwanted diff jitter in legacy codebases - Added support for importing VS Code's `editor.formatOnSaveMode` setting --------- Co-authored-by: Kirill Bulatov <kirill@zed.dev> |

terminal: Open links with Cmd/Ctrl-click when mouse mode is enabled (#60067)
This fixes #56956. The terminal link-open gesture was split between `mouse_down` and `mouse_up`, but both halves only ran in the non-mouse-reporting path. When a foreground app enabled terminal mouse reporting, a secondary click on a URL or file path was forwarded to the PTY instead of opening the link. This changes secondary-click link handling so it checks for a hyperlink before mouse reporting on press, and completes the matching hyperlink open before mouse reporting on release. The event is only consumed when the click actually lands on the same link, so normal clicks in mouse-reporting TUIs continue to be forwarded as before. Validation: - `CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=1 cargo test -j1 -p terminal test_hyperlink_ctrl_click_same_position_in_mouse_mode` - `CARGO_BUILD_JOBS=1 cargo check -j1 -p terminal` Release Notes: - Improved terminal links: Cmd/Ctrl-click now opens links even when the application has mouse reporting enabled (e.g. vim, opencode, claude). Disable `terminal.open_links_in_mouse_mode` to forward these clicks to the application instead. --------- Co-authored-by: Smit Barmase <heysmitbarmase@gmail.com> |

Change OpenAI compatible URL placeholder in edit prediction settings (#58771)
Fixed my PR #58753. Change the url placeholder from http://localhost:11434 to http://localhost:8080/v1/completions to match the URL endpoint in the [docs](https://zed.dev/docs/ai/edit-prediction) ```json { "edit_predictions": { "provider": "open_ai_compatible_api", "open_ai_compatible_api": { "api_url": "http://localhost:8080/v1/completions", "model": "deepseek-coder-6.7b-base", "prompt_format": "deepseek_coder", "max_output_tokens": 512 } } } ``` Note: http://localhost:8080/v1/completions/ with an extra / does not work. Added the constants OPEN_AI_COMPATIBLE_API_URL_PLACEHOLDER and OPEN_AI_COMPATIBLE_MODEL_PLACEHOLDER. ### Initial Issue I noticed that using http://localhost:8080 doesn't work with llama.cpp. Giving errors like this from (zed: open log): ``` 2026-06-06T17:55:39+01:00 ERROR [crates/edit_prediction/src/edit_prediction.rs:2464] custom server error: 404 Not Found - {"error":{"message":"File Not Found","type":"not_found_error","code":404}} ``` After reading the docs above, I found out that I had to add /v1/completions to the end. agent: Sandboxing polish (#60173)
Removes git sandbox feature The reason is essentially: - write access to a `.git` dir can be trivially escalated to unsandboxed access - therefore, it is misleading to offer git access separate from unsandboxed access - instead, we encourage the model to use `--no-optional-locks` to avoid needing write access to `git status`, etc. Adds sandboxing to fetch tool --- Release Notes: - N/A or Added/Fixed/Improved ... --------- Co-authored-by: zed-zippy[bot] <234243425+zed-zippy[bot]@users.noreply.github.com> |

git: Allow showing inline blame in the status bar (#59696)
# Add status bar location for inline git blame ## Objective - Closes #12133 by implementing the VS Code-like behavior for status bar git blame ## Solution Adds a VS Code–style option to render the current-line git blame in the status bar instead of inline at the cursor. Whats new - A new location setting: Under the inline_blame configuration, you can now choose between two options: - `inline` (Default) — Keeps things exactly as they are, showing the blame details at the end of your current line. - `status_bar` — Moves the blame info down to the bottom status bar. - The Status Bar Item: When you choose the status bar option, a clean new button appears at the bottom left of your window. It features a Git icon, the author's name, how long ago the change was made, and the commit summary - Behaves as it does before, but displayed at a different location - Clicking the status bar item will instantly open up the full Git commit details like at vscode - Settings UI: - The "Location" control is now a `DynamicItem` nested under "Enabled", so it only appears when inline blame is enabled. - Registers a dropdown renderer for `InlineBlameLocation`. - Updates `all-settings.md` and `visual-customization.md` for the new option. ## Testing - Manually tested both modes by toggling `git.inline_blame.location` between `inline` and `status_bar`: - `inline` keeps the existing behavior unchanged. - `status_bar` shows the blame for the focused line in the status bar, hides the inline blame, updates on cursor movement, clears when no editor is focused, and opens the blame commit on click. - Verified the settings UI shows the "Location" dropdown only when inline blame is enabled. - Tested with `show_commit_summary` toggled when location is `status_bar` (for inline location, nothing is changed) Areas that could use more testing: - Remote (collab) editors ? Reviewers can test by setting the following in `settings.json` and moving the cursor across blamed lines: ```json { "git": { "inline_blame": { "enabled": true, "location": "status_bar" } } } ``` ## Showcase <details> <summary>Click to view showcase</summary> ### Video https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/6d9f490d-7bf3-473c-9562-8351546dfaf9 ### Screenshots <img width="894" height="749" alt="image" src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/c6a49008-899d-4a0c-9098-1ffb9e28252b" /> </details> Release Notes: - Added a `git.inline_blame.location` setting to render current-line git blame in the status bar instead of inline. |
