When debugging a remote SSH connection, I came across an unformatted

This extracts a `language_core` crate from the existing `language`
crate, and creates a `grammars` data crate. The goal is to separate
tree-sitter grammar infrastructure, language configuration, and LSP
adapter types from the heavier buffer/editor integration layer in
`language`.
## Motivation
The `language` crate pulls in `text`, `theme`, `settings`, `rpc`,
`task`, `fs`, `clock`, `sum_tree`, and `fuzzy` — all of which are needed
for buffer integration (`Buffer`, `SyntaxMap`, `Outline`,
`DiagnosticSet`) but not for grammar parsing or language configuration.
Extracting the core types lets downstream consumers depend on
`language_core` without pulling in the full integration stack.
## Dependency graph after extraction
```
language_core ← gpui, lsp, tree-sitter, util, collections
grammars ← language_core, rust_embed, tree-sitter-{rust,python,...}
language ← language_core, text, theme, settings, rpc, task, fs, ...
languages ← language, grammars
```
## What moved to `language_core`
- `Grammar`, `GrammarId`, and all query config/builder types
- `LanguageConfig`, `LanguageMatcher`, bracket/comment/indent config
types
- `HighlightMap`, `HighlightId` (theme-dependent free functions
`highlight_style` and `highlight_name` stay in `language`)
- `LanguageName`, `LanguageId`
- `LanguageQueries`, `QUERY_FILENAME_PREFIXES`
- `CodeLabel`, `CodeLabelBuilder`, `Symbol`
- `Diagnostic`, `DiagnosticSourceKind`
- `Toolchain`, `ToolchainScope`, `ToolchainList`, `ToolchainMetadata`
- `ManifestName`
- `SoftWrap`
- LSP data types: `BinaryStatus`, `ServerHealth`,
`LanguageServerStatusUpdate`, `PromptResponseContext`, `ToLspPosition`
## What stays in `language`
- `Buffer`, `BufferSnapshot`, `SyntaxMap`, `Outline`, `DiagnosticSet`,
`LanguageScope`
- `LspAdapter`, `CachedLspAdapter`, `LspAdapterDelegate` (reference
`Arc<Language>` and `WorktreeId`)
- `ToolchainLister`, `LanguageToolchainStore` (reference `task` and
`settings` types)
- `ManifestQuery`, `ManifestProvider`, `ManifestDelegate` (reference
`WorktreeId`)
- Parser/query cursor pools, `PLAIN_TEXT`, point conversion functions
## What the `grammars` crate provides
- Embedded `.scm` query files and `config.toml` files for all built-in
languages (via `rust_embed`)
- `load_queries(name)`, `load_config(name)`,
`load_config_for_feature(name, grammars_loaded)`, and `get_file(path)`
functions
- `native_grammars()` for tree-sitter grammar registration (behind
`load-grammars` feature)
## Pre-cleanup (also in this PR)
- Removed unused `Option<&Buffer>` from
`LspAdapter::process_diagnostics`
- Removed unused `&App` from `LspAdapter::retain_old_diagnostic`
- Removed `fs: &dyn Fs` from `ToolchainLister` trait methods
(`PythonToolchainProvider` captures `fs` at construction time instead)
- Moved `Diagnostic`/`DiagnosticSourceKind` out of `buffer.rs` into
their own module
## Backward compatibility
The `language` crate re-exports everything from `language_core`, so
existing `use language::Grammar` (etc.) continues to work unchanged. The
only downstream change required is importing `CodeLabelExt` where
`.fallback_for_completion()` is called on the now-foreign `CodeLabel`
type.

## Summary
- Added `TarBz2` variant to `AssetKind` enum for `.tar.bz2` / `.tbz2`
archives
- Implemented `extract_tar_bz2` using the `bzip2` feature of
`async-compression` (already a workspace dependency, just enabled the
feature flag)
- Wired up both streaming and file-based extraction paths in
`github_download.rs`
- Added `.tar.bz2` / `.tbz2` URL detection in both
`LocalExtensionArchiveAgent` and `LocalRegistryArchiveAgent`
This unblocks ACP registry entries (like Goose) that only ship
`.tar.bz2` archives.
Reference: https://github.com/block/goose/issues/8047
## Test plan
- [ ] Verify `cargo check` and `clippy` pass (confirmed locally)
- [ ] Test downloading an ACP agent that ships a `.tar.bz2` archive
(e.g., Goose)
- [ ] Verify existing `.tar.gz` and `.zip` agent downloads still work
Release Notes:
- Added support for `.tar.bz2` archives in ACP agent server downloads,
unblocking registry entries like Goose that only ship bzip2-compressed
tarballs.

Many editors such as vim and emacs support "modelines", a comment at the
beginning of the file that allows the file type to be explicitly
specified along with per-file specific settings
- The amount of configurations, style and settings mapping cannot be
handled in one go, so this opens up a lot of potential improvements.
- I left out the possiblity to have "zed" specific modelines for now,
but this could be potentially interesting.
- Mapping the mode or filetype to zed language names isn't obvious
either. We may want to make it configurable.
This is my first contribution to zed, be kind. I struggled a bit to find
the right place to add those settings. I use a similar approach as done
with editorconfig (merge_with_editorconfig). There might be better ways.
Closes#4762
Release Notes:
- Add basic emacs/vim modeline support.
Supersedes #41899, changes:
- limit reading to the first and last 1kb
- add documentation
- more variables handled
- add Arc around ModelineSettings to avoid extra cloning
- changed the way mode -> language mapping is done, thanks to
`modeline_aliases` language config
- drop vim ex: support
- made "Local Variables:" handling a separate commit, so we can drop it
easily
- various code style improvements

Fixes#51733
The previous fix in #32590 only filtered `.vscode` tasks at the modal
presentation layer, so they still appeared in other code paths and in
the used-tasks list. This moves the filtering into
`worktree_scenarios()` in the task inventory, so all consumers see the
correct behavior.
Changes:
- `InventoryFor::worktree_scenarios()` now skips `.vscode` entries when
`.zed` entries exist for the same worktree
- `used_and_current_resolved_tasks()` filters previously spawned
`.vscode` tasks from the used-tasks list
- Removes the now-redundant `.vscode` filter from the task picker modal
Release Notes:
- Fixed .vscode/tasks.json still being used when .zed/tasks.json is
present

### Context
This fixes a bug where the sidebar would show a newly created git
worktree thread as its own project while the recently created workspace
is loading its git state. The fix is adding project APIs to await the
initial worktree store scan and then each git repo initial snapshot;
then awaiting on them before adding the new workspace to the
multi-workspace.
### Architecture:
I added the `Worktree::Remote::wait_for_snapshot` API to
`Worktree::Local` to enable `WorktreeStore` to await for both remote and
local projects until there's an initial scan. The `WorktreeStore` uses
the watcher pattern so it can update the initial scan state whenever
visible worktrees are added or removed from the store.

Fixes#51490
## Problem
When `code_actions_on_format` is configured (e.g.,
`source.fixAll.phpcs`) and `formatter` is not explicitly set, code
action edits are applied but then reverted during format-on-save.
The root cause is in the formatting pipeline's error handling. Code
actions and formatters share a single transaction via `.chain()`. When
`Formatter::Auto` resolves to `Formatter::Prettier` (PHP defaults to
`prettier.allowed: true`), and prettier is not installed or fails, the
error propagates via `?` out of the formatter loop, aborting the entire
`format_buffer_locally` function. This causes the formatting transaction
- which already contains the successfully applied code action edits - to
be lost.
The workaround of setting `"formatter": []` works because it removes all
formatters from the chain, so no formatter can fail and trigger the
abort.
## Fix
Change error handling for individual formatters (Prettier, External
command, Language Server) from propagating errors via `?` to logging the
error and continuing to the next formatter. This treats "formatter
failed" as a no-op for that specific formatter rather than aborting the
entire pipeline.
This matches the existing pattern used when `LanguageServer(Current)`
finds no server that supports formatting - it already logs and
`continue`s rather than erroring.
## Testing
- `cargo check -p project` passes
- `cargo fmt -p project -- --check` passes
Release Notes:
- Fixed `code_actions_on_format` edits being reverted when `formatter:
"auto"` resolves to an unavailable formatter.

## Summary
Fixes#48289
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/52021
Diagnostic error markers (red/yellow dots) in the project panel file
tree persisted after errors were resolved. Three root causes:
- **WorktreeUpdatedEntries ignored** — when files changed on disk (e.g.
`yarn install`), stale diagnostic summaries were never cleared. Added
`invalidate_diagnostic_summaries_for_updated_entries()` to clear
summaries for `Removed`/`Updated`/`AddedOrUpdated` paths.
- **Missing DiagnosticsUpdated emission on server stop** —
`stop_local_language_server()` cleared summaries and sent proto messages
but never emitted `LspStoreEvent::DiagnosticsUpdated`, so the project
panel never refreshed.
- **Buffer reload not handled** — reloading a buffer from disk did not
clear stale summaries. Added `BufferEvent::Reloaded` handler.
All three paths also send zeroed `UpdateDiagnosticSummary` proto
messages to downstream collab clients.
## Test plan
- [x] `./script/clippy` passes
- [x] `cargo test -p project -p project_panel -p worktree` passes (319
tests, 0 failures)
- [x] 4 new tests added:
- `test_diagnostic_summaries_cleared_on_worktree_entry_removal`
- `test_diagnostic_summaries_cleared_on_worktree_entry_update`
- `test_diagnostic_summaries_cleared_on_server_restart`
- `test_diagnostic_summaries_cleared_on_buffer_reload`
- [x] Manual testing: error markers clear when files change on disk
- [x] Manual testing: error markers clear on LSP restart
Release Notes:
- Fixed stale diagnostic data persisting after file reloads, server
restarts and FS entry removals
## Context

Closes#43162
Implements the OAuth 2.0 Authorization Code + PKCE authentication flow
for remote MCP servers using Streamable HTTP transport, as specified by
the [MCP auth
specification](https://modelcontextprotocol.io/specification/2025-03-26/basic/authorization).
Previously, connecting to a remote MCP server that required OAuth would
silently fail with a timeout — the server's 401 response was never
handled. Now, Zed detects the 401, performs OAuth discovery, and guides
the user through browser-based authentication.
Step-up authentication and pre-registered clients are not in scope for
this PR, but will be done as follow-ups.
## Overview
- **401 detection** — When the HTTP transport receives a 401 during
server startup, it surfaces a typed `TransportError::AuthRequired` with
parsed `WWW-Authenticate` header info.
- **OAuth discovery** — Protected Resource Metadata (RFC 9728) and
Authorization Server Metadata (RFC 8414) are fetched to locate the
authorization and token endpoints.
- **Client registration** — Zed first tries CIMD (Client ID Metadata
Document) hosted at `zed.dev`. If the server doesn't support CIMD, falls
back to Dynamic Client Registration (DCR).
- **Browser flow** — A loopback HTTP callback server starts on a
preferred fixed port (27523, listed in the CIMD), the user's browser
opens to the authorization URL, and Zed waits for the callback with the
authorization code.
- **Token exchange & persistence** — The code is exchanged for
access/refresh tokens using PKCE. The session is persisted in the system
keychain so subsequent startups restore it without another browser flow.
- **Automatic refresh** — The HTTP transport transparently refreshes
expired tokens using the refresh token, and persists the updated session
to the keychain.
## UI changes
- Servers requiring auth show a warning indicator with an
**"Authenticate"** button
- During auth, a spinner and **"Waiting for authorization..."** message
are shown
- A **"Log Out"** option is available in the server settings menu for
OAuth-authenticated servers
- The configure server modal handles the auth flow inline when
configuring a new server that needs authentication.
Release Notes:
- Added OAuth authentication support for remote MCP servers. Servers
requiring OAuth now show an "Authenticate" button when they need you to
log in. You will be redirected in your browser to the authorization
server of the MCP server to go through the authorization flow.

When a git worktree is in a detached HEAD state (e.g. after `git
checkout --detach`), the workspace for that worktree would disappear
from the sidebar UI, and if the workspace was currently open your UI
would just disappear.
This happened because `parse_worktrees_from_str` silently dropped any
worktree entries without a `branch` line in the porcelain output, which
cascaded through the `linked_worktrees` list and caused
`prune_stale_worktree_workspaces` to remove the workspace.
This PR:
- Makes `Worktree::ref_name` an `Option<SharedString>` so detached
worktrees can be represented
- Renames `Worktree::branch()` to `Worktree::display_name()`, which
returns the branch name when available or the short SHA as a fallback
(mirroring how the title bar already handles detached HEAD for
repositories)
- Updates `parse_worktrees_from_str` to include detached and bare
worktree entries instead of dropping them
- Filters detached worktrees out of the worktree picker UI, preserving
the existing product decision to only show branch-based worktrees there

Closes#48917
## Summary
- Stop sending `context.only` for generic `textDocument/codeAction`
requests.
- Keep explicit kind filtered requests unchanged.
- Add regression coverage for generic code action requests so actions
like `source.addTest` remain visible.
## Root Cause
`GetCodeActions::to_lsp` populated `context.only` even when the caller
requested all code actions (`kinds == None`). That turned the normal
code actions menu into a filtered request. With `gopls`, this filtered
out `source.addTest`, so `Add test for ...` never appeared.
## Verification
- `cargo fmt --all -- --check`
- `./script/clippy -p project`
- `cargo nextest run -p project --no-fail-fast --no-tests=warn`
- `cargo test -p editor
editor_tests::test_organize_imports_manual_trigger -- --exact`
- `cargo test -p editor
editor_tests::test_context_menus_hide_hover_popover -- --exact`
## Manual Testing
- Repro'd the protocol level behavior against `gopls`: unfiltered
requests return `source.addTest`, filtered requests excluding it do not.
- Opened `zed_guild/testing_projects/act/pkg/artifactcache/handler.go`
- Triggered `Show Code Actions` on `StartHandler`
- Confirmed `Add test for StartHandler` appears
Release Notes:
- Fixed Go `gopls` code actions so `Add test for ...` appears in the
generic code actions menu.

Closes#50524
When a file is deleted while project search results are displayed, the
deleted file's buffer was kept alive by the search multibuffer and would
reappear on re-search.
**Root cause:** `Search::into_handle()` treated buffers without a
`project_entry_id()` (which happens when `DiskState::Deleted`) as
"unnamed buffers" and fed them
directly into the search pipeline. The multibuffer's strong
`Entity<Buffer>` reference kept the buffer alive.
**Fix:**
- Filter deleted-file buffers from search candidates in `into_handle()`
and `all_loaded_buffers()`
- Subscribe to `FileHandleChanged` events on the search multibuffer to
proactively remove deleted files from existing results

Closes#48256
It appears that the current git remotes support was implemented in
#42819, following the design described in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/42486#issuecomment-3524092306.
That design does not include an interaction for deleting remotes, but
the delete remote branch action was mistakenly implemented as deleting
the remote itself.
After this PR, there should be no code paths that use `remove_remote`
anymore. I've kept it for now though, as it may be useful when we
introduce the corresponding interaction in the future.
Release Notes:
- Fixed a bug where deleting a remote branch from the branch picker
would incorrectly remove the entire remote configuration
With a large number of files in the git status, pressing stage/unstage
could cause a noticeable freeze. The async performance profiler showed
that the task spawned inside `change_all_files_stage` blocked the main
thread for 300ms+, resulting in a clear and visible UI stall. The main
cause was the need to traverse all entries to determine what to stage or
unstage, which becomes expensive for large change sets.
Same repro as: #47800
Release Notes:
- Improved latency of stage/unstage operations
Closes#12628
Adds a `$ZED_LANGUAGE` task variable that resolves to the language name
of the active buffer (e.g., "Rust", "Python", "Shell Script"). This lets
tasks adapt behavior based on language without parsing file extensions.
Use cases from the issue:
- Pass syntax highlighting language to external tools (e.g., `rg --type
$ZED_LANGUAGE`)
- Adjust comment wrapping width per language
- Handle extensionless files and untitled buffers that have a language
assigned
VS Code provides equivalent functionality via
`${command:activeEditorLanguageId}`. Neovim exposes it as `&filetype`.
## Changes
- Added `Language` variant to `VariableName` in
`crates/task/src/task.rs`
- Populated from `buffer.language().name()` in
`BasicContextProvider::build_context`
(`crates/project/src/task_inventory.rs`), following the same pattern as
`File` and `Stem`
- Updated test fixtures in `crates/tasks_ui/src/tasks_ui.rs` to include
the new variable
- Added `ZED_LANGUAGE` to the variable list in `docs/src/tasks.md`
## Testing
Updated the existing `test_task_variables` test in `tasks_ui` to verify
`ZED_LANGUAGE` resolves to "Rust" and "TypeScript" for the respective
test buffers.
This contribution was developed with AI assistance (Claude Code).

Setting `"formatter": null` does not actually disable the formatter, as
it is functionally equivalent to leaving the setting undefined. In this
case, Zed falls back to the default behavior—either "auto" or a specific
language server, depending on the language.
This PR adds a "none" option to the formatter setting, allowing users to
explicitly disable formatting while keeping `code_actions_on_format`
enabled separately.
```json
"formatter": "none"
```
I still have some doubts about the necessity of this setting itself, but
if it is a desired addition, I will update the documentation
accordingly. If not, please feel free to close this PR.
- [x] Tests or screenshots needed?
- [x] Code Reviewed
- [x] Manual QA
Release Notes:
- Added `"formatter": "none"` in settings to explicitly disable the
formatter.
- check `content_size==0`
- entry is removed from `downloading_files`
- empty file is writte via `smol::fs::write(..., &[])`
this means the receiver handles the empty files completely as soon as
the State message arrives, without ever needing a Chunk that will never
come

When accepting an autocomplete suggestion with multiple active cursors
using `CMD+D`, Zed applies the primary completion edit to all cursors.
However, the overlap check for LSP `additionalTextEdits` only verifies
the replace range of the newest cursor.
If user has a cursor inside an existing import statement at the top of
the file and another cursor further down, Zed fails to detect the
overlap at the top of the file. When the user auto-completes the import
statement ends up jumbled.
This fix updates the completion logic to calculate the commit ranges for
all active cursors and passes them to the LSP store. The overlap check
now iterates over all commit ranges to ensure auto-imports are correctly
discarded if they intersect with any of the user's multi-cursor edits.

Closes#51450
When you restart the lsp, it does not sufficiently clear cached data
regarding the semantic tokens, if using semantic_tokens = "full", this
would mean that you would have no syntax highlighting. also, toggling on
and off semantic tokens in the menu would have no effect. this change
properly clears the cached state and things work again!

After:

You might notice that the syntax highlighting is quite spare in the
videos, especially compared to the non semantic token based
highlighting, and you would be correct! but thats just how it is with
`semantic_tokens: "full"`, other editors, like neovim, provide basic
syntax highlighting that zed doesn't (because it doesn't need to with
treesitter usually, but here treesitter is disabled), however if we turn
off that syntax highlighting we can see that neovim actually matches zed
here:

`Session::restart_task` is set to `Some` when a restart is initiated but
never cleared back to `None`. The guard at the top of `restart()` checks
`self.restart_task.is_some()` and returns early, so only the first
restart attempt succeeds.
This primarily affects debug adapters that advertise
`supportsRestartRequest` dynamically via a `CapabilitiesEvent` after
launch, such as the Flutter debug adapter.

## Summary
This fix addresses the cross-platform root cause identified in issue
#38109 where open buffers go stale or empty when external tools write
files.
## The Problem
The buffer's `file_updated()` method was only comparing `mtime` to
determine if a buffer needed to be reloaded. This caused a race
condition when external tools write files using `std::fs::write()`,
which uses `O_TRUNC` and creates a brief window where the file is 0
bytes:
1. Scanner re-stats → sees 0 bytes, mtime T
2. `file_updated()` sees mtime changed → emits `ReloadNeeded`
3. Buffer reloads to empty, stamps `saved_mtime = T`
4. Tool finishes writing → file has content, but mtime is still T (or
same-second granularity)
5. Scanner re-stats → mtime T matches `saved_mtime` → **no reload
triggered**
6. Buffer permanently stuck empty
## The Fix
Release Notes:
- Add the file `size` to `DiskState::Present`, so that even when mtime
stays the same, size changes (0 → N bytes) will trigger a reload. This
is the same fix that was identified in the issue by @lex00.
## Changes
- `crates/language/src/buffer.rs`: Add `size: u64` to
`DiskState::Present`, add `size()` method
- `crates/worktree/src/worktree.rs`: Pass size when constructing File
and DiskState::Present
- `crates/project/src/buffer_store.rs`: Pass size when constructing File
- `crates/project/src/image_store.rs`: Pass size when constructing File
- `crates/copilot/src/copilot.rs`: Update test mock
## Test plan
- [ ] Open a file in Zed
- [ ] Write to that file from an external tool (e.g., `echo "content" >
file`)
- [ ] Verify the buffer updates correctly without needing to reload

BufferEvent::Edited had no way to distinguish local edits from remote
(collaboration) edits. This caused edit prediction behavior to fire on
the guest's editor when the host made document changes.
Release Notes:
- Fixed edit predictions triggering on collaboration guests when the
host edits the document.

This should be the last step in implementing full git worktree support
in the `GitStore`. We still need to add UI for that allows a user to
rename a git worktree and, by extension git branches if we use the git
picker to do so.
Also, I added a helper function called `disallow_guest_request::<T>` to
the `Collab::rpc` that is used to specify a proto request isn't allowed
to be sent by a guest. This enabled me to add a regression test that
checks that a guest isn't allowed to delete a git worktree, without the
test hanging forever because it's waiting for the proto server to
respond.
Since SSH connections send the proto message directly from client to
remote host, this won't affect those requests.

These are edge cases, but there are a few ways you can get into a state
where you are setting favorites for registry agents and we don't have
the setting yet. This prioritizes `type: registry` for agents that we
have in the registry, especially the previous built-ins.

This PR exposes the LSP settings schema functionality to extensions,
allowing them to provide JSON schema for `initialization_options` and
`settings` fields to enable autocomplete in settings files.
New extension API methods (v0.8.0+):
- `language_server_initialization_options_schema`
- `language_server_settings_schema`
Both methods return an optional JSON string conforming to JSON schema.
Older extension versions gracefully return `None`.
Release Notes:
- Added support for settings schemas for the next version of the
extension API so that settings autocompletion can be provided for
language server settings.

Closes#46846
When `disable_ai: true` is set in user settings, Zed was still
connecting to configured MCP (context) servers and sending
initialization requests. This change adds checks for `DisableAiSettings`
in `ContextServerStore` to:
- Skip server connections when AI is disabled
- Disconnect from running servers when AI becomes disabled
- Connect to servers when AI is re-enabled
- Prevent registry changes from triggering connections while AI is
disabled
The fix tracks `ai_disabled` state to detect transitions and properly
manage server connections when AI is toggled.
Release Notes:
- Fixed Zed connecting to MCP servers when AI is disabled.
