This PR adds the ability to change both the terminal and agent panels
between fixed and flexible sizing using the status bar button right
click menu. The value persists in your settings, similar to the dock
position.
I've also slightly tweaked the styling of the "Dock Left" and "Dock
Right" items in the right-click menu, adding the current value as an
item with a check beside it, to make it clear that it's a selectable
option.

This PR upgrades the workspace's app state to a strong pointer. It's an
app-global concern, and it should only die when the app dies. When the
app dies the process exits, so the cyclic reference problem isn't an

This PR simplifies the flexible-width agent panel's rendering such that
for now, it will not grow to fill the center area when there are no
files open. The problem with doing that is that it makes the bottom dock
invisible.
We could potentially revisit this, and just shrink the width of the
agent panel when the bottom dock was toggled, but that might feel
unstable, so for now I'm doing a simpler thing and just keeping the
center area visible even when it is empty.

## Context
Since https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/52232/, there have been
a lot of problems related to panels randomly hiding and showing
themselves. However, the code in that PR is pretty innocuous. It
shouldn't be having that kind of effect. However, it turns out there's a
bug in how GPUI subscriptions work that caused there to be orphaned
observe callbacks firing spuriously. The core sequence is captured in
`test_unsubscribe_during_callback_with_insert`, essentially you have to
have two observers on the same item (`SettingsStore`, in this case),
that both drop themselves. If the first observer _adds_ a callback onto
the _same item_, then the second observer will never successfully drop
itself.
While in there, I also fixed an unrelated bug that @maxbrunsfeld noticed
where if you have two callbacks on the same item, and an earlier
callback drops a later one, then the second callback will spuriously
fire.
I also added a few extra smoke tests to the subscription code, and a
test capturing the observed bug at the workspace level.

to the far left. The reversal "cancels out" most of the priority
changes, except the outline panel and the collab panel.

In `remove_workspace`, the removed `Entity<Workspace>` could still have
a pending `serialize_workspace` throttle timer (200ms). When that timer
fired, `serialize_workspace_internal` would write the old `session_id`
back to the DB — undoing the removal. On next restart, the workspace
would reappear.
The race window opens whenever any state change (worktree change,
breakpoint change, etc.) triggers `serialize_workspace` within 200ms
before `remove_workspace` is called.
**Fix**: Before the DB cleanup task, `update` the removed workspace
entity to:
1. `session_id.take()` — so any in-flight serialization writes
`session_id: None`
2. `_schedule_serialize_workspace.take()` — cancel the pending throttle
timer
3. `_serialize_workspace_task.take()` — cancel any actively running
serialization task
This mirrors what `remove_from_session` already does (clearing
`session_id`), but `remove_workspace` was missing it.
Release Notes:
- Fixed a bug where a removed workspace could reappear on next launch
due to a serialization race.

This PR adjusts the logic that was added in #45166 to just apply to the
specific case of interacting with the command palette in Vim and Helix
modes (hereafter referred to collectively as "Vim mode").
In that PR, we would suppress the auto-save on focus change for _any_
modal in the workspace, regardless of whether we were actually in Vim
mode or not. This would cause issues where moving between files some
other way—such as the tab switcher or the file finder—would cause the
buffers to never be saved.
We now only suppress the auto-save on focus loss behavior when in Vim
mode and the active modal is the command palette. In all other cases, we
save the file.
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/47968.
Supersedes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51801 and
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51802.
Note: the way we are identifying the active modal as the command palette
isn't the best, but @bennetbo and I didn't have any other cleaner
solutions. It's a bit tricky, as the logic lives in the `workspace`,
which isn't able to know about the `CommandPalette` due to
`command_palette` depending on `workspace`. There may be some other way
we could achieve this with more indirection, but it's unclear whether it
would be worth it at this time.
Release Notes:
- Changed `{ "autosave": "on_focus_change" }` to now always save on
focus loss, except for when activating the command palette when in
Vim/Helix mode.

The tab context menu has "Copy Path", "Open in Terminal", and "Reveal In
Project Panel" but no way to reveal the file in the system file manager.
This action already exists in three other context menus (editor
right-click, project panel, outline panel) but was missing from tab
right-click.
## Changes
Adds a platform-specific entry to the tab context menu:
- **macOS:** "Reveal in Finder"
- **Windows:** "Reveal in File Explorer"
- **Linux:** "Reveal in File Manager"
Placed after "Copy Relative Path" and before "Pin Tab". Gated behind
`is_local` (including WSL with host interop) to match the project
panel's behavior. Uses the existing `project.reveal_path()`
infrastructure, which handles platform-specific file manager invocation
and WSL path conversion.
## Prior art
Every major editor has this in the tab context menu:
- VS Code: "Reveal in Finder" (macOS) / "Reveal in File Explorer"
(Windows)
- JetBrains IDEs: Right-click tab -> "Open in" -> "Finder"
- Sublime Text: Right-click tab -> "Reveal in Finder"
Zed already has this in the editor body right-click menu (`Cmd-K R`),
project panel (`Alt-Cmd-R`), and outline panel. The tab context menu was
the only place it was missing.
This contribution was developed with AI assistance (Claude Code).
Release Notes:

All of the important changes are in
[`db.rs`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-2f644eab943bfa58feec29256281a3d9e8d4d7784cd34783e845af8beb15b16d).
Consider reading the commit log in order to review this work.
The DB crate's macro and API was changed to fix flakiness observed in
the MultiWorkspace tests when run locally. This flakiness was caused by
a shared `static LazyLock`, that caused concurrent test runs to interact
with the same underlying in-memory database. This flakiness wasn't
possible on CI due to it's usage of `cargo nextest`, whose
process-per-test approach masked this problem.
Essentially, I've changed the `static_connection` macro to remove the
static database variable and redone the internal model. Now, all
database types are thin wrappers around a generic `AppDatabase`. The
`AppDatabase` collects all of the individual table's migrations via the
`inventory` crate, and so only runs the migrations once on startup,
rather than a dozen times on startup.
The new API requires a `cx` so that we can replace the database returned
at runtime, rather than relying exclusively on a process-global
thread-local. However, we are still using a `static LazyLock` so that we
only need to take an `&App`, instead of an `&mut App`. These databases
types are `Clone + Send + Sync`, so you can easily capture-and-move the
database into background tasks and other places that don't have a `cx`.
For tests that require database isolation, it is now possible to set
their own database in init. See
[`workspace::init_test`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-041673bbd1947a35d45945636c0055429dfc8b5985faf93f8a8a960c9ad31e28R13610),
for the flakiness fix.
Best part, this change should be entirely compiler driven, so the Zed
agent was able to make the app-wide refactor easily.

solution for #43004
Release Notes:
- Added workspace::FocusCenterPane
The `editor::ToggleFocus` action not working really drives me bonkers,
and it also doesn't really make sense, because it doesn't toggle
anything. it moves focus, but doesn't move focus back anywhere if you
run it again so 'ToggleFocus' seems misleading.
Here we have added an action that just moves focus to the most recent
center pane: `workspace::FocusCenterPane`
this action correctly moves the focus to the center pane from any dock,
even if the center pane is the project diff, branch diff, terminal, or
keymap editor, etc.
i'm not sure if this would be considered a 'replacement' for
`editor::ToggleFocus` but i do think this is probably more in line with
what most users would consider the expected behavior.

wouldn't be deserialized from the DB

## Summary
- Implements `icon_label` on `GitPanel` to return the total count of
uncommitted changes (`new_count + changes_count`) when non-zero, capped
at `"99+"` for large repos.
- Updates `PanelButtons::render()` to render that label as a small green
badge overlaid on the panel's sidebar icon, using absolute positioning
within a `div().relative()` wrapper.
- The badge uses `version_control_added` theme color and
`LabelSize::XSmall` text with `LineHeightStyle::UiLabel` for accurate
vertical centering, positioned at the top-right corner of the icon
button.
The `icon_label` method already existed on the `Panel`/`PanelHandle`
traits with a default `None` impl, and was already implemented by
`NotificationPanel` (unread notification count) and `TerminalPanel`
(open terminal count) — but was never rendered. This wires it up for all
three panels at once.
## Notes
- Badge is positioned with non-negative offsets (`top(0)`, `right(0)`)
to stay within the parent container's bounds. The status bar's
`render_left_tools()` uses `.overflow_x_hidden()`, which in GPUI clips
both axes (the `overflow_mask` returns a full content mask whenever any
axis is non-`Visible`), so negative offsets would be clipped.
- `LineHeightStyle::UiLabel` collapses line height to `relative(1.)` so
flex centering aligns the visual glyph rather than a
taller-than-necessary line box.
- No new data tracking logic — `GitPanel` already maintains `new_count`
and `changes_count` reactively.
- No feature flag or settings added per YAGNI.
## Suggested .rules additions
The following pattern came up repeatedly and would prevent future
sessions from hitting the same issue:
```
## GPUI overflow clipping
`overflow_x_hidden()` (and any single-axis overflow setter) clips **both** axes in GPUI.
The `overflow_mask()` implementation in `style.rs` returns a full `ContentMask` (bounding box)
whenever any axis is non-`Visible`. Absolute-positioned children that extend outside the element
bounds will be clipped even if only the X axis is set to Hidden.
Avoid negative `top`/`right`/`bottom`/`left` offsets on absolute children of containers
that have any overflow hidden — keep badge/overlay elements within the parent's bounds instead.
```
Release Notes:
- Added a numeric badge to the git panel sidebar icon showing the count
of uncommitted changes.

This PR is motivated by internal feedback in which the notification that
we show inviting to resolve merging conflicts with an agent also pops up
if the agent itself ran `git merge`. In this case, the notification is
unnecessary noise. So, what I'm doing here is simply _not_ showing it if
there's a running agent.
I want to note that this change is accepting a trade-off here, in which
there could be cases that even if an agent is running, the notification
can still be useful. There could be other ways to identify whether the
agent is running `git merge`, but they all felt a bit too complex for
the moment. And given this is reasonably an edge case, I'm favoring a
simple approach for now.

Previously, if you wanted to have a button that contains icons on both
edges, you'd need to use a `ButtonLike` component, which takes any
children. Meanwhile, the `Button` would only take one icon, where you
could control its position through the `IconPosition` enum. This has
always felt unnecessarily limiting. So, this PR removes this limitation
by adding two new methods to the button: `start_icon` and `end_icon`.
In the meantime, I have also been bothered by the unnecessary
indirection in the `IconButton` due to the existence of the `ButtonIcon`
component. So I figured I could also completely eliminate that by adding
some of its methods directly to the `IconButton` and in the Button, just
using a regular `Icon` component.
---
## Before
```rust
Button::new("id", "Label")
.icon(IconName::Plus)
.icon_position(IconPosition::Start)
.icon_size(IconSize::Small)
.icon_color(Color::Muted)
```
## After
```rust
Button::new("id", "Label")
.start_icon(Icon::new(IconName::Check))
.end_icon(Icon::new(IconName::ChevronDown).size(IconSize::XSmall))
```
This should have no visual impact to the UI.

Fixes#50835
### Problem :
The "View AI Settings" button on the Welcome page was always rendered
regardless of the disable_ai setting. This made it visible (and
non-functional) for users who had AI disabled, which was confusing.
### Fix :
- Adds an optional visibility: Option<fn(&App) -> bool> predicate field
to SectionEntry
- At render time, Section::render uses filter_map to skip entries whose
predicate returns false.
- The "View AI Settings" entry is given a predicate that checks
!DisableAiSettings::get_global(cx).disable_ai, matching the same pattern
used in `title_bar.rs` and `quick_action_bar.rs`.
- All other entries have visibility: None, meaning they are always shown
— no behaviour change for them.
