Fixes an autoscroll bug that sometimes obscures the current row behind a
sticky header.
The bug was caused by `Editor::autoscroll_vertically` using the
`sticky_header_line_count` value that was cached during the previous
render, which isn't necessarily the number of sticky headers that the
scroll target needs, e.g.
- when jumping to a definition
- when pressing the up arrow key when the selection is in the topmost
visible row with `"vertical_scroll_margin": 0`
This fixes that by not caching `sticky_header_line_count` and instead
querying Tree-sitter on the fly to get the number of sticky headers that
the scroll target needs. Performance-wise this seem okay, I measured it
to take less than 200µs on my machine using a very large Rust file (and
there are still some possible ways to optimize this if necessary). In
particular, the pathological huge single-line file case as discussed in
#48450 shouldn't be an issue here because unlike the main sticky header
Tree-sitter query, here we query the outline items that contain a
particular point rather than those that intersect an entire row.
The `ScrollCursorTop` handler is also simplified to use the same shared
function for counting the number of sticky headers, since that action
doesn't rely on autoscroll.

We had an internal report of soft wrap not working in git panel's commit
editor. Given the following settings:
```json
{
"languages": {
"Git Commit": {
"preferred_line_length": 80,
"soft_wrap": "preferred_line_length",
},
},
}
```
We would not soft-wrap in narrow viewports. As it turned out, the
problem was that we were always prefering a `preferred_line_length` as
our soft wrap boundary over the actual width of the editor.

Summary
Semantic token highlighting was missing when opening a file from
multibuffer search results (Ctrl+Shift+F). Which file got hit depended
on window size and scroll offset.
## Root cause
Two async tasks race to write `post_scroll_update`:
1. `set_visible_line_count` (scroll.rs:682) fires on first render and
spawns a task that calls `register_visible_buffers` + `update_lsp_data`
(requests semantic tokens).
2. `open_buffers_in_workspace` (editor.rs:25049) calls
`change_selections` with autoscroll right after creating the editor.
This emits `ScrollPositionChanged`, whose handler (editor.rs:2655)
replaces `post_scroll_update` with a task calling
`update_data_on_scroll`.
3. `update_data_on_scroll` (editor.rs:26099) has a singleton guard: `if
!self.buffer().read(cx).is_singleton()` that skips `update_lsp_data` for
single-file buffers. This is a scroll optimization, singleton buffers
don't change their visible buffer set on scroll.
4. The initial task gets dropped, the replacement skips
`update_lsp_data`, semantic tokens are never requested.
## Fix
Added a `needs_initial_lsp_data` flag to the Editor struct, set to
`true` on creation. `update_data_on_scroll` checks this flag alongside
the singleton guard, so `update_lsp_data` runs at least once even for
singletons. The flag flips to `false` right after, so subsequent scrolls
behave exactly as before. No perf impact after the first render.

## Context
### Background
Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:
- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer
### Purpose of this PR
This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.
The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn buffer_anchor_to_anchor(&self, anchor: text::Anchor) -> Option<multi_buffer::Anchor>;
}
```
And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.
There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.
### Other changes
There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:
- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):
```
enum Anchor {
Min,
Excerpt {
text_anchor: text::Anchor,
path_key_index: PathKeyIndex,
diff_base_anchor: Option<text::Anchor>,
},
Max,
}
```
That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were
doing that were buggy for min/max! Instead, we have a new API that
correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn anchor_to_buffer_anchor(&self, anchor: multi_buffer::Anchor) -> Option<text::Anchor>;
}
```
- `MultiBufferExcerpt` has been removed in favor of a new
`map_excerpt_ranges` API directly on `MultiBufferSnapshot`.

*This PR previously also fixes the "expanded message editor not taking
up full height" part, but #52545 has already fixed that. Yet it seems to
leave a new issue (that was previously not revealed) behind, as
follows.*
This PR fixes the `Full + ExcludeOverscrollMargin` editor mode (which
the agent panel message editor uses in expanded mode), which could
jitter while typing because render-time layout and scroll-position
updates were clamping against different effective
`scroll_beyond_last_line` policies. This PR fixes that inconsistency so
the expanded editor stays stable while typing, and adds a regression
test covering `ExcludeOverscrollMargin` scroll clamping.

All of the important changes are in
[`db.rs`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-2f644eab943bfa58feec29256281a3d9e8d4d7784cd34783e845af8beb15b16d).
Consider reading the commit log in order to review this work.
The DB crate's macro and API was changed to fix flakiness observed in
the MultiWorkspace tests when run locally. This flakiness was caused by
a shared `static LazyLock`, that caused concurrent test runs to interact
with the same underlying in-memory database. This flakiness wasn't
possible on CI due to it's usage of `cargo nextest`, whose
process-per-test approach masked this problem.
Essentially, I've changed the `static_connection` macro to remove the
static database variable and redone the internal model. Now, all
database types are thin wrappers around a generic `AppDatabase`. The
`AppDatabase` collects all of the individual table's migrations via the
`inventory` crate, and so only runs the migrations once on startup,
rather than a dozen times on startup.
The new API requires a `cx` so that we can replace the database returned
at runtime, rather than relying exclusively on a process-global
thread-local. However, we are still using a `static LazyLock` so that we
only need to take an `&App`, instead of an `&mut App`. These databases
types are `Clone + Send + Sync`, so you can easily capture-and-move the
database into background tasks and other places that don't have a `cx`.
For tests that require database isolation, it is now possible to set
their own database in init. See
[`workspace::init_test`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51809/changes#diff-041673bbd1947a35d45945636c0055429dfc8b5985faf93f8a8a960c9ad31e28R13610),
for the flakiness fix.
Best part, this change should be entirely compiler driven, so the Zed
agent was able to make the app-wide refactor easily.

This removes a hack from `MultiBuffer::anchor_at` that works around
missing logic for handling `ExcerptId::max()` by implementing that said
missing logic.
Generally, `ExcerptId::min()` is already being handled correctly due to
how `Cursor` seeking works, we tend to seek to or beyond a seek target,
meaning `min` will always match the first excerpt as expected. `max` on
the other hand will always seek beyond the last excerpt resulting in no
excerpt being found, so any code path dealing with the excerpt sumtree
will have to specially check for this special excerpt ID to work
correctly.

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/37621
Improves https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/24623
Adding scrollbars withing Zed's UI currently is rather cumbersome, as it
requires the copying of a lot of code in order for these to work. Wiring
up settings for scrollbar visibilty always has to be done at the call
site and the state has to be saved and maintained by the caller as well.
Similarly, reserving space has to also be handled by the caller.
This PR changes the way scrollbars work in Zed fundamentally by making
use of the new `use_keyed_state` APIs: Instead of saving the state at
the call site, the window now keeps track of the state corresponding to
scrollbars. This enables us to add scrollbars with e.g. one simple call
on divs:
```rust
div()
.vertical_scrollbar(window, cx)
```
will add a scrollbar to the corresponding container. There are some more
improvements regarding tracking of scrollbar visibility settings (which
is now handled by a trait for each setting that supports this) as well
as reserving space.
Additionally, all needed stuff for layouting, catching events and
reserving space is also now managed by the scrollbar component instead.
This drastically reduces the amount of event listeners and makes
layouting of two scrollbars easier.
Furthermore, this paves the way for more improvements to scrollbars,
such as graceful auto-hide. Only downsight here is that we lose some
customizability in a few areas. However, once this lands, we gain the
ability to quickly follow these up without breaking stuff elsewhere.
This also already fixes a few bugs:
- Scrollbars no longer flicker on first render.
- Auto-hide now properly works for all scrollbars.
- If the content size changes, the scrollbar is updated on the same
frame. Both of these happened because we were computing the scrollbar
sizes too early, causing us to use the sizes from the previous frame or
unitialized sizes.
- The project panel no longer jumps if scrolled all the way to the
bottom and the scrollbar actually auto-hides.
Still TODO:

Closes#34881
For horizontal scroll, we weren't keeping track of the `local` bool, so
whenever the agent tries to autoscroll horizontally, it would be seen as
a user scroll event resulting in unfollow.
Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where the Follow Agent could unexpectedly stop
following during edits.
This PR fixes an issue where the topmost header in a multibuffer would
jump when the corresponding buffer was folded.
The issue arose because for the topmost header, the offset within the
scroll anchor is negative, as the corresponding buffer only starts below
the header itself and thus the offset for the scroll position has to be
negative.
However, upon collapsing that buffer, we end up with a negative vertical
scroll position, which causes all kinds of different problems. The issue
has been present for a long time, but became more visible after
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/34295 landed, as that change
removed the case distinction for buffers scrolled all the way to the
top.
This PR fixes this by clamping just the vertical scroll position upon
return, which ensures the negative offset works as expected when the
buffer is expanded, but the vertical scroll position does not turn
negative once the buffer is folded.
Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where folding the topmost buffer in a multibuffer would
cause the header to jump slightly.
We not do not create new snapshots anymore when autoscrolling
horizontally and also do not notify any longer should the new scroll
position match the old one.

This Pull Request introduces various changes to the editor's horizontal
scrolling, mostly focused on vim mode's horizontal scroll motions (`z
l`, `z h`, `z shift-l`, `z shift-h`). In order to make it easier to
review, the logical changes have been split into different sections.
## Cursor Position Update
Changes introduced on https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/32558
added both `z l` and `z h` to vim mode but it only scrolled the editor's
content, without changing the cursor position. This doesn't reflect the
actual behavior of those motions in vim, so these two commits tackled
that, ensuring that the cursor position is updated, only when the cursor
is on the left or right edges of the editor:
-
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/ea3b866a763ba0bcfc12999ee1741c6528c895b7
-
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/805f41a913c6e86ef8be550d363a3cc2caeccbe9
## Horizontal Autoscroll Fix
After introducing the cursor position update to both `z l` and `z h` it
was noted that there was a bug with using `z l`, followed by `0` and
then `z l` again, as on the second use `z l` the cursor would not be
updated. This would only happen on the first line in the editor, and it
was concluded that it was because the
`editor::scroll::autoscroll::Editor.autoscroll_horizontally` method was
directly updating the scroll manager's anchor offset, instead of using
the `editor::scroll::Editor.set_scroll_position_internal` method, like
is being done by the vertical autoscroll
(`editor::scroll::autoscroll::Editor.autoscroll_vertically`).
This wouldn't update the scroll manager's anchor, which would still
think it was at `(0, 1)` so the cursor position would not be updated.
The changes in [this
commit](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/3957f02e189018ef559cd28516f0b872026b0ce1)
updated the horizontal autoscrolling method to also leverage
`set_scroll_position_internal`.
## Visible Column Count & Page Width Scroll Amount
The changes in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/d83652c3ae1d0356fd7dca7b8922a0116de39ff0
add a `visible_column_count` field to `editor::scroll::ScrollManager`
struct, which allowed the introduction of the `ScrollAmount::PageWidth`
enum.
With these changes, two new actions are introduced,
`vim::normal::scroll::HalfPageRight` and
`vim::normal::scroll::HalfPageLeft` (in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/7f344304d56337654a34b1b461a1dc69defd2e4e),
which move the editor half page to the right and half page to the left,
as well as the cursor position, which have also been mapped to `z
shift-l` and `z shift-h`, respectively.
Closes#17219
Release Notes:
- Improved `z l` and `z h` to actually move the cursor position, similar
to vim's behavior
- Added `z shift-l` and `z shift-h` to scroll half of the page width's
to the right or to the left, respectively

* Fixes inlay colors spoiled after document color displayed
* Optimizes the query pattern for large multi buffers
Release Notes:
- Fixed document colors issues with other inlays and multi buffers
Release Notes:
- Added initial support for both `z l` and `z h` in vim mode
These changes relate to #17219 but don't yet close the issue, as this
Pull Request is simply adding support for horizontal scrolling in vim
mode and actually moving the cursor to the correct column in the current
row will be handled in a different Pull Request.
Some notes on these changes:
- 2 new default keybindings added to vim's keymap
- `z l` which triggers the new `vim::ColumnRight` action
- `z h` which triggers the new `vim::ColumnLeft` action
- Introduced a new `ScrollAmount` variant, `ScrollAmount::Column(f32)`
to represent horizontal scrolling
- Replaced usage of `em_width` with `em_advance` to actually scroll by
the width of the cursor, instead of the width of the character

A user on Discord reported an issue where the minimap thumb was fully
opaque:
<img
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/5049c6a3-f89a-4ceb-9d1b-ec06e7fe9151"
height="300">
This can happen because the scrollbar and its thumb might not
neccessarily be transparent at all.
Thus, this PR adds the`minimap.thumb.background` and
`minimap.thumb.border` colors to themes so theme authors can specify
custom colors for both here.
Furthermore, I ensured that the minimap thumb background fallback value
can never be entirely opaque. The values were arbitrarily chosen to
avoid the issue from occuring whilst keeping currently working setups
working. With the new properties added, authors (and users) should be
able to avoid running into this issue altogether so I would argue for
this special casing to be fine. However, open to change it should a
different approach be preferrred.
Release Notes:
- Added `minimap.thumb.background` and `minimap.thumb.border` to themes
to customize the thumb color and background of the minimap.
- Fixed an issue where the minimap thumb could be opaque if the theme
did not specify a color for the thumb.
Closes#30756Closes#30729
Follow-up to #28064
The issue arose because GPUI does still propagate mouse events to all
event handlers during dragging actions even if the dragging action does
not belong to the current handler. I forgot about this in the other PR.
This resulted in an incorrect hover being registered for the thumb,
which was sufficient to trigger scrolling in the next frame, since
`dragging_scrollbar_axis` did not consider the actual thumb state (this
was generally sufficient, but not with this incorrectly registered
hover).
Theoretically, either of the both commits would suffice for fixing the
issue. However, I think it is better to fix both issues at hand instead
of just one. Now, we will only start the scroll on actual scrollbar
clicks and not show a hover on the thumb if any other drag is currently
going on.

Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where editor scrollbars would start scrolling when
hovering over the thumb whilst already dragging something else.
## Overview
This PR adds the minimap feature to the Zed editor, closely following
the [design from Visual Studio
Code](https://code.visualstudio.com/docs/getstarted/userinterface#_minimap).
When configured, a second instance of the editor will appear to the left
of the scrollbar. This instance is not interactive and it has a slimmed
down set of annotations, but it is otherwise just a zoomed-out version
of the main editor instance. A thumb shows the line boundaries of the
main viewport, as well as the progress through the document. Clicking on
a section of code in the minimap will jump the editor to that code.
Dragging the thumb will act like the scrollbar, moving sequentially
through the document.

## New settings
This adds a `minimap` section to the editor settings with the following
keys:
### `show`
When to show the minimap in the editor.
This setting can take three values:
1. Show the minimap if the editor's scrollbar is visible: `"auto"`
2. Always show the minimap: `"always"`
3. Never show the minimap: `"never"` (default)
### `thumb`
When to show the minimap thumb.
This setting can take two values:

* Adds debug logging to everywhere near INSERT/UPDATEs in the DB
So something like
`env RUST_LOG=debug,wasmtime_cranelift=off,cranelift_codegen=off,vte=off
cargo run` could be used to view these (current zlog seems to process
the exclusions odd, so not sure this is the optimal RUST_LOG line) can
be used to debug any further writes.
* Removes excessive window stack serialization
Previously, it serialized unconditionally every 100ms.
Now, only if the stack had changed, which is now check every 500ms.
* Removes excessive terminal serialization
Previously, it serialized its `cwd` on every `ItemEvent::UpdateTab`
which was caused by e.g. any character output.
Now, only if the `cwd` has changed at the next event processing time.
Release Notes:
- Fixed more excessive DB writes

`"restore_on_file_reopen": true` in workspace settings can now be used
to enable and disable editor data between file reopens in the same pane:
https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/8d938ee1-d854-42a8-bbc3-2a4e4d7d5933
The settings are generic and panes' data store can be extended for
further entities, beyond editors.
---------------
Impl details:
Currently, the project entry IDs seem to be stable across file reopens,
unlike BufferIds, so those were used.
Originally, the DB data was considered over in-memory one as editors
serialize their state anyway, but managing and exposing PaneIds out of
the DB is quite tedious and joining the DB data otherwise is not
possible.
Release Notes:
- Started to restore editor state on reopen
This PR is primarily an implementation of @osiewicz
[comment](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/19495#pullrequestreview-2488877957)
in an effort to increase maintainability after the horizontal editor
scrollbar was added in #19495 . I also want to build on these changes in
future PRs to adress some other small bugs.
This primarily does the following:
1. Uses `along` wherever possible
2. Fixes the amount of mouse event listeners attached to the editor when
scrollbars are displayed to 2 instead of 2-4 in case both scrollbars are
displayed.
This can be done since only one scrollbar can be dragged by the cursor
at any given time, so the event listeners now account for that. The
state reflecting the scrollbar dragging state was also updated
accordingly.
It does not change any functionality besides the aforementioned event
listener code as well as some minor bugs which where present after
#19495 , namely:
- One missing `cx.stop_propagation()` (see
[here](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/a8741dc3107a205ba5a28aa8c3e18747ceed2ba3/crates/editor/src/element.rs#L4684)
and
[here](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/a8741dc3107a205ba5a28aa8c3e18747ceed2ba3/crates/editor/src/element.rs#L4838)
respectively).
- The horizontal scrollbar thumb having a small border on the left side,
which seems to be unintended for the horizontal scrollbar whilst
intended for the vertical one. Since this is a minimal change, I figured
it could be already included in this PR.
This PR admittetly grew quite large over time, however, much of the diff
is just renames to account for the code now working for both axes as
well as moved code. The logic remains (or should at least be)
unaffected. If I should split this into two PRs or remove some of the
changes, please let me know.

When the selection grows both ways, the new code prioritizes the top
part instead of bottom one, this is usually more helpful considering
that most programming language grammars tend to define tokens right
before large delimited blocks, and rarely after (because humans and
parsers read from top to bottom).
Also, revert selection when convenient, so you have more control over
what you're selecting, looking at the selection `head` is commonly more
convenient than at the `tail`.
Release Notes:
- Improve scrolling of `editor::SelectLargerSyntaxNode` for better
visibility.

TODO:
- [x] Use AsyncFn instead of Fn() -> Future in GPUI spawn methods
- [x] Implement it in the whole app
- [x] Implement it in the debugger
- [x] Glance at the RPC crate, and see if those box future methods can
be switched over. Answer: It can't directly, as you can't make an
AsyncFn* into a trait object. There's ways around that, but they're all
more complex than just keeping the code as is.
- [ ] Fix platform specific code

This PR makes progress on #7711 by identifying any common prefix of the
paths in the file finder's search results, and replacing the "interior"
of that prefix---every path segment but the first and last---with `...`,
when a heuristic indicates that the longest path would otherwise
overflow the modal.
The elision is not applied to any segment that contains a match for the
search query.
There may be more work to do on #7711 in the case of long result paths
that do not share a significant common prefix.

Don't animate the cursor when previewing jumps.
Instead, display the jump popover with a line that resembles a cursor,
indicating the jump destination. If the jump destination is outside of
the view port, there is an extra step in which `tab` scrolls the
viewport to reveal the jump destination.

There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:
- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`
Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!
Tasks:
- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs
### issues post merge
- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures
- [x] Mac build issue

Closes#4427
Release Notes:
- Added a horizontal scrollbar to the editor panel
- Added `axis` option to `scrollbar` in the Zed configuration, which can
forcefully disable either the horizontal or vertical scrollbar
- Added `horizontal_scroll_margin` equivalent to
`vertical_scroll_margin` in the Zed configuration
Rough Edges:
This feature seems mostly stable from my testing. I've been using a
development build for about a week with no issues. Any feedback would be
appreciated. There are a few things to note as well:
1. Scrolling to the lower right occasionally causes scrollbar clipping
on my end, but it isn't consistent and it isn't major. Some more testing
would definitely be a good idea. [FIXED]
2. Documentation may need to be modified
3. I added an `AxisPair` type to the `editor` crate to manage values
that have a horizontal and vertical variant. I'm not sure if that's the
optimal way to do it, but I didn't see a good alternative. The `Point`
type would technically work, but it may cause confusion.
