Kirill Bulatov 9930d2c2a3 Share generics better and strip rodio audio features (#64260)
* Preserve bundle compiler flags commit commit is a follow-up to
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/63432

Linux bundling script had custom `RUSTFLAGS` set which eradicated prior
config.
Moved all flags into `.cargo/bundle-config.toml` instead.

* Trim audio features and compress resources commit removes unused
`rodio` features and enables resource compression

The win from the latter seems not that large, so can revert if needed,
but seemed very easy to enable.

With compiler wrappers disabled, `cargo clean --target-dir
target/binary-size-split-build` and `cargo build --locked -p zed`:
Before: 135.6s wall, 1569.8s CPU, zed binary 1175563800 bytes
After: 130.5s wall (-3.8%), 1488.7s CPU (-5.2%), zed binary 1171527064
bytes (-0.3%, -4.0MB)

With `ZED_BUNDLE=true CXXFLAGS=-stdlib=libc++` and `cargo --config
.cargo/bundle-config.toml build --locked --release -p zed -p cli
--target aarch64-apple-darwin`:
Before: 369.4s wall, 3861.6s CPU, zed binary 381662328 bytes
After: 369.4s wall (+0.01%), 3866.1s CPU (+0.1%), zed binary 377836968

Yue Fei 779ca5ef72 docs: Add note to Windows building docs (#60104)
# Objective

Microsoft has decoupled the MSVC version from the Visual Studio version
starting with Visual Studio 2026 (see [this
blog](https://devblogs.microsoft.com/cppblog/new-release-cadence-and-support-lifecycle-for-msvc-build-tools/)),
meaning that the previous traditional naming conventions were obsolete.
For Visual Studio 2026 (including future newer versions of VS) users,
the existing docs will probably confuse them, as they cannot find out
the components named like "MSVC v145 - VS 2026 C++ ..." in present
Visual Studio Installer.

## Solution

Add a note next to the dependencies.

## Testing

Docs are no need to test. (Maybe?)

## Self-Review Checklist:

morgankrey 6daa541e77 docs: Apply documentation standards across all docs (#49177)
## Summary

Comprehensive remediation of 146 documentation files to align with Zed's
documentation conventions and brand voice guidelines.

## Changes

### YAML Frontmatter
- Added `title` and `description` frontmatter to all docs missing it

### Settings UI Pattern
- Updated 48+ files to show Settings Editor before JSON examples
- Pattern: `Configure X in Settings ({#kb zed::OpenSettings}), or add to
your settings file:`
- Added `([how to edit](./configuring-zed.md#settings-files))` links for
JSON-only settings

### Brand Voice Fixes
- Removed exclamation points (command-palette, key-bindings, repl,
privacy-and-security, etc.)
- Simplified em dash chains to parentheticals (environment,
troubleshooting, agent-panel, etc.)
- Fixed marketing language (yarn.md intro, development/linux.md)

### Terminology Alignment
- `settings UI` -> `Settings Editor`
- `sidebar` -> specific panel names (Project Panel, Collab Panel)
- `directory` -> `folder` in non-technical contexts
- `workspace` -> `project` in non-LSP contexts
- `Command Palette` -> `command palette` (lowercase)

### Callout Standardization
- Converted various callout formats to standard `> **Note:**` pattern

## Related

Depends on conventions established in #49176.

Richard FeldmanandAmp 8c0b088366 Screenshot testing (#45259)
## Screenshot testing

Adds visual testing infrastructure for GPUI that captures screenshots by
rendering directly to Metal textures. The

The screenshots end up in `target/visual_tests/` and look like this:

<img width="2560" height="1600" alt="workspace_with_editor2"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/54112343-4af1-4347-9bab-f099de97dd29"
/>
<img width="2560" height="1600" alt="project_panel2"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/0cd54b61-dace-4398-a28e-0b4d7c2968f6"
/>

### Key Features

- **Direct texture capture**: Screenshots are captured by rendering the
scene to a Metal texture and reading pixels directly from GPU memory,
rather than using ScreenCaptureKit
- **No visibility requirements**: Windows don't need to be visible on
screen since we read directly from the render pipeline
- **Deterministic output**: Captures exactly what GPUI renders, not what
the OS compositor displays
- **No permissions needed**: Doesn't require Screen Recording permission
like ScreenCaptureKit would

### Running the Visual Tests

```bash
# Run visual tests (compares against baselines)
cargo run -p zed --bin visual_test_runner --features visual-tests
# Update baseline images (when UI intentionally changes)
UPDATE_BASELINE=1 cargo run -p zed --bin visual_test_runner --features visual-tests
# View the captured screenshots
open target/visual_tests/
```

### Implementation

- `Window::render_to_image()` - Renders the current scene to a texture
and returns an `RgbaImage`
- `MetalRenderer::render_to_image()` - Core implementation that renders
to a non-framebuffer-only texture
- `VisualTestAppContext` - Test context that uses real macOS platform
rendering
- `VisualTestAppContext::capture_screenshot()` - Synchronous screenshot
capture using direct texture rendering

### Usage

```rust
let mut cx = VisualTestAppContext::new();
let window = cx.open_window(...)?;
let screenshot: RgbaImage = cx.capture_screenshot(window.into())?;
```

Cherry 3c0acdea5e docs: Add troubleshooting section warning about RUSTFLAGS env var (#23354)
According to #23223, manually setting `RUSTFLAGS` env var overrides
settings in `.cargo/config.toml`. Since users possibly may set their own
`RUSTFLAGS` when building, this creates an avenue where builds may fail
for really strange reasons that are difficult to debug.

This PR adds notes to the troubleshooting section to avoid setting
`RUSTFLAGS`, and offers alternatives which do not conflict.

This problem most recently affected nightly CI builders since we had
been setting `RUSTFLAGS` in our workflows to enable custom things like
gles or compiling with a specific target cpu. PR #23117 caused builds to
fail unless they were compiled with `-C target-feature=+crt-static`,
which due to this issue the `RUSTFLAGS` env var we set overrode the
`config.toml` compile flags, causing our builds to fail.
