# Objective
Follow-up of #61374.
Zed now supports Windows as a remote target, but when connecting from a
Unix platform to Windows, some path handling still uses the native
client's path style (Unix) to construct paths, which causes weird path
displays in different areas.
One of them is the project path stored in the `settings.json` file,
which is related to the open path picker in the codebase:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/5e1fd392f67e27fa1da91bad43eef7db1a5dec23/crates/open_path_prompt/src/open_path_prompt.rs#L668-L679
For example, if I have a remote project at `D:\code\test_python` and
want to open it in remote development, I usually use path completions,
with `D:\code\` as the parent path and `test_python` as the selected
candidate. Zed directly joins them using `Path::join` on the Unix
platform, which results in `D:\code\/test_python`.
A second thing I found is the displayed name for the git repo. The
related source code is:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/5e1fd392f67e27fa1da91bad43eef7db1a5dec23/crates/title_bar/src/title_bar.rs#L262-L268
Also taking `D:\code\test_python` as an example: the passed-in
`common_dir_abs_path` is `D:\code\test_python\.git`, and
`repo_identity_path()` directly uses `Path::file_name()` and
`Path::parent()` from the standard library to handle this:
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/5e1fd392f67e27fa1da91bad43eef7db1a5dec23/crates/project/src/git_store.rs#L9956-L9965
Ideally, this function should return `D:\code\test_python`. But due to
the platform mismatch, `D:\code\test_python\.git` is returned; after
further processing in the title bar, we get `D:\code\test_python\` as
the displayed name, while the expected display name is `test_python`.
In the past, only Unix-like systems could serve as remote servers, and
their path separator (`/`) is valid on Windows, so everything looked
fine. But Unix does not support `\` as a valid separator — that's the
root cause. We need to use `PathStyle`, which is designed for processing
paths across platforms, to deal with these cases.
## Solution
- Added new APIs `PathStyle::parent()` and `PathStyle::file_name()`,
which serve as replacements for `Path::parent()` and `Path::file_name()`
to process paths cross-platform.
- Adopted the new APIs in `repo_identity_path()`, and updated the
relevant call sites.
- For the open path picker, use `PathStyle::join_path()` instead of
`Path::join`.
## Testing
The added `PathStyle::parent()` and `PathStyle::file_name()` are covered
by detailed unit tests. These tests verify that the behavior matches the
corresponding methods in `Path`, just independent of the host platform.
For the path display issues, I built and tested manually; a comparison
is attached in the Showcase section.

## Other things to note
This PR also did a little refactoring: it moved the `PathStyle`-related
tests from the `util` crate to the `path` crate, and updated the
documentation to reflect that Windows can serve as a remote platform.
The recent project picker also suffers from the same cross-platform bug,
but it is not fixed here, because a clean fix requires dealing with
database storage, unlike the direct API changes made here. I will
address it in a follow-up PR.
This PR looks very large, but most of the changes are the test migration
and the new API implementation. I hope the unit tests and comments can
offload some of the burden for reviewers.

Release Notes:
- Fixed project paths being built incorrectly when connecting from Unix
machines to Windows remote servers.
# Objective
`WorktreeStore::find_or_create_worktree` inserts the shared
worktree-creation task into `loading_worktrees` and relies on the task
it returns to each caller to remove that entry once creation resolves.
But the creation task keeps running through the clone the map itself
holds, while the map cleanup lives only in the callers' returned tasks.
If every caller is cancelled before creation resolves, the resolved task
stays in `loading_worktrees` forever, retaining the `Entity<Worktree>`
captured in its result (a `Shared` task memoizes its output). Such a
worktree can never be released: `remove_worktree` only unlists it, so
its background scan keeps running and its snapshot keeps growing for the
lifetime of the window. The stale entry also keeps
`initial_scan_complete` permanently `false` (that flag is
`loading_worktrees.is_empty() && …`).
Callers are cancelled routinely — worktree creation is async and can
take seconds on a large tree, while the tasks awaiting it are owned by
UI that the user can close at any time (a tab or pane, a debugger panel
resolving a path, an agent session, or the whole window). See the
existing note in `crates/zed/src/zed.rs` that external-file worktrees
are "released on file close".
Observed in the wild: a home-directory worktree removed from the project
kept scanning for hours and grew Zed past 45 GB; neither removing the
folder nor ending the agent session freed it — only quitting Zed. (The
scan-amplification half of that incident is #60988.)
## Solution
Spawn the map cleanup as its own detached task, next to the map
insertion, so a loading entry always leaves `loading_worktrees` when
loading resolves regardless of what happens to the callers. The returned
per-caller task is unchanged apart from no longer owning that cleanup.
## Testing
- Added `test_worktree_released_when_creation_caller_is_cancelled`: it
requests a worktree, drops the returned task immediately (as a cancelled
caller would), lets creation complete, removes the worktree, and asserts
the entity is released. It fails on `main` and passes with this change.
- Full worktree-related project integration suite is green (45/45).

Closes#61671
A submodule's `.git` is a file pointing into the superproject's
`.git/modules/<name>`, which looks just like a linked worktree's `.git`
file. The identity-path resolution used for recent projects and project
grouping treated them the same, so submodules got registered under
`.git/modules/<name>` instead of their own folder.
The fix detects submodule git dirs (`is_submodule_git_dir`) and skips
resolution for them, so a submodule keeps its own working directory as
its identity. Linked worktrees and bare repos are unaffected.
### Current vs. Expected
Current: opening submodule `Foo/Bar` registers the path as
`Foo/.git/modules/Bar`.
Expected: it registers as `Foo/Bar`, like any other project.
### Video

### Tests
- `is_submodule_git_dir` unit test
- `resolve_git_worktree_to_main_repo` returns `None` for a submodule
- persistence test asserting the submodule identity stays at its own
folder
Release Notes:

`.git/modules` directory instead of their own path
# Objective
Add remote (SSH) and collaboration support for trashing and restoring
files in the project panel, which in turn enables undo/redo of trash
operations against remote and collab projects.
Relates to #5039.
## Solution
- Updated the project panel undo system to carry `TrashId` instead of
`TrashedEntry`.
- Using `TrashedEntry` could get hairy, as it includes paths, which
wouldn't play too nicely when using, for exapmle, macOS as the client
and Windows as the host. Using a simple identifier is much easier in
this regard and simplifies implementation.
- Enabled the Trash action and context-menu entry on remote projects,
and removed the command palette filter in `ProjectPanel::new` that was
still hiding the action on remote.
- As far as I can tell, there isn't a reliable way to detect whether a
given remote actually supports the OS trash, so we expose the action
everywhere rather than guessing. On a remote without trash support the
action will fail when invoked but this is a conscious tradeoff until we
find a better way to handle this.
- `fs` now tracks trashed files in a `SlotMap<TrashId, TrashedEntry>` on
each `Fs` implementation. Trashed files are referenced by an opaque
`TrashId` instead of passing a `TrashedEntry` around, which avoids
serializing filesystem paths in remote messages.
- Split the old `delete_entry(trash: bool)` API into distinct
`trash_entry`/`trash_file` (returning a `TrashId`) and
`delete_entry`/`delete_file` across `Project`, `Worktree`,
`LocalWorktree` and `RemoteWorktree`.
- This lets us drop the optional trash result (`Option<TrashedEntry>`)
from the delete path and require a `TrashId` from the trash path.
- Added new proto messages (`TrashProjectEntry`,
`TrashProjectEntryResponse`, `RestoreProjectEntry`,
`RestoreProjectEntryResponse`) to let clients request the host to trash
or restore entries.
- This deprecates `DeleteProjectEntry::use_trash`, but the host still
honors it. An older collab peer may request trashing via that flag
instead of the newer `TrashProjectEntry`. If the host ignored it, a
newer host would permanently delete a file the user meant to send to the
trash. The field will be removed in a later PR once all supported peers
use `TrashProjectEntry`.
## Testing
The following tests were introduced to ensure the new behavior is
correctly tested:
* `remote_server::remote_editing_tests::test_remote_trash_restore` –
Tests trashing a project entry in remote
*
`remote_server::remote_editing_tests::test_remote_delete_project_entry_with_trash`
– Test to ensure we continue respecting `DeleteProjectEntry::use_trash`
until it is fully removed
* `project_panel::tests::undo::trash_directory_undo_redo` – Not related
to these changes but a nice to have as we were missing a test ensuring
that trashing and then undoing and redoing it for a directory works as
expected
Besides these, the following scenarios were manually tested against a
remote session on the same machine (macOS):
- Trashing → Undo (Restore) → Redo (Trashing)
- Batch Trashing → Undo (Batch Restore) → Redo (Batch Trashing)
- Rename → Undo (Rename) → Redo (Rename)
- Move → Undo (Move) → Redo (Move)
- Batch Move → Undo (Batch Move) → Redo (Batch Move)

Summary
- Track whether a worktree root is itself a linked Git worktree.
- Use that metadata when computing project group keys so bare checkout
worktrees group under the repository identity path.
- Propagate the metadata through remote worktree protocols and add
local/remote regression coverage.
Background
Bare checkout layouts can place linked worktrees under the repository
identity directory, e.g. `/monty/.bare` with worktrees like
`/monty/feature-a`. We were treating those linked worktree paths as
separate project identities, which caused the sidebar to move agent
threads under the active worktree instead of the shared repository
group.
We also exclude adding this to collab intentionally, we can open a
different PR for that if we need to.

Fixes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/54830
This fixes a bugs where
* when there's no main worktree, we treated the first linked worktree as
main
* the titlebar and sidebar showed two different things when opening a
linked wortree directly
When there's no main worktree, our "project group key" will be the bare
repo path. For displaying this to the user, we try to present something
meaningful:
* If the bare repo is `foo.git`, we'll say "foo"
* If the bare repo is "bar/.bare", we'll "bar"

- Fixed bugs in Zed's sidebar and titlebar when editing in git worktrees
created from bare repositories.
> **Foundation PRs:** #53732, #53733, #53734 — These three draft PRs
contain the base refactors (retained workspaces, agent panel overlay
split, ThreadId introduction) that this PR builds on.
## Goal
Remove `DraftId` and merge `draft_threads` + `background_threads` into a
single `retained_threads: HashMap<ThreadId, Entity<ConversationView>>`
in `AgentPanel`. A draft is just a thread that hasn't sent its first
message — no separate identity or storage needed.
## Changes
### agent_panel.rs
- Remove `DraftId` / `DraftIdCounter` / the `Global` impl
- Merge the two maps into `retained_threads`
- Add `thread_id: ThreadId` field to `BaseView::AgentThread`
- Rename methods: `create_draft` → `create_thread`, `activate_draft` →
`activate_retained_thread`, `remove_draft` → `remove_thread`, etc.
- Replace `clear_active_thread` with `show_or_create_empty_draft`
- Update `update_thread_work_dirs` to sync `ThreadMetadataStore` paths
when worktrees change
- Keep `load_agent_thread(...)` cleanup so activating a real thread
removes empty retained drafts
### sidebar.rs
- Remove `active_entry` derivation from `rebuild_contents` (was racing
with deferred effects)
- Add `sync_active_entry_from_panel` called from event handlers instead
- Simplify `ActiveEntry` — remove `ThreadActivation` struct, make
`session_id` optional
- Move `seen_thread_ids` to global scope (was per-group, causing
duplicate thread entries)
- Remove dead code: `clear_draft`, `render_draft_thread`
- Generalize `pending_remote_thread_activation` into
`pending_thread_activation` so all persisted-thread activations suppress
fallback draft reconciliation
- Set the activation guard before local persisted-thread activation
switches workspaces
- Make `reconcile_groups(...)` bail while a persisted-thread activation
is in flight
- On `ActiveViewChanged`, clear empty group drafts as soon as a pending
persisted-thread activation resolves
### thread_metadata_store.rs
- Make `ThreadMetadata.title` an `Option<SharedString>` with
`display_title()` fallback
- Add `update_worktree_paths` for batched path updates when project
worktrees change
### Other crates
- Update all `ThreadMetadata` construction sites and title display sites
across `agent_ui` and `sidebar`
## Fallback draft invariant
This PR now tightens the retained-thread invariant around fallback
drafts vs real thread activation/restoration:
- Fallback drafts are always empty
- User-created drafts worth preserving are non-empty
- While a persisted thread is being activated/restored/loaded, sidebar
reconciliation must not create an empty fallback draft for that target
group/workspace
- Once the real thread becomes active, empty fallback drafts in that
target group are removed
This is enforced by the sidebar-side activation guard plus existing
`AgentPanel` empty-draft cleanup after real-thread load.
## Tests

- `cargo test -p sidebar unarchive -- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar archive_last_thread_on_linked_worktree --

This PR greatly improves our handling of remote threads in the sidebar.
One primary issue was that many parts of the sidebar were only looking
at a thread's path list and not its remote connection information. The
fix here is to use `ProjectGroupKey` more consistently throughout the
sidebar which also includes remote connection information.
The second major change is to extend the MultiWorkspace with the ability
to initiate the creation of remote workspaces when needed. This involved
refactoring a lot of our remote workspace creation paths to share a
single code path for better consistency.

When a single-file worktree's root file no longer exists, the background
scanner would previously enter an infinite retry loop attempting to
canonicalize the path. This caused continuous error logging and resource
waste.
This fix detects when a single-file worktree root cannot be
canonicalized (after attempting the file handle fallback) and emits a
new Deleted event, allowing the worktree to be properly closed.
This is most commonly encountered with temporary files, logs, and
similar files that are opened in Zed and then deleted externally, but
persist in the workspace database across sessions.

Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where Zed would enter an infinite retry loop when the

### Context
This fixes a bug where the sidebar would show a newly created git
worktree thread as its own project while the recently created workspace
is loading its git state. The fix is adding project APIs to await the
initial worktree store scan and then each git repo initial snapshot;
then awaiting on them before adding the new workspace to the
multi-workspace.
### Architecture:
I added the `Worktree::Remote::wait_for_snapshot` API to
`Worktree::Local` to enable `WorktreeStore` to await for both remote and
local projects until there's an initial scan. The `WorktreeStore` uses
the watcher pattern so it can update the initial scan state whenever
visible worktrees are added or removed from the store.

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/38690Closes#37353
### Background
On Windows, paths are normally separated by `\`, unlike mac and linux
where they are separated by `/`. When editing code in a project that
uses a different path style than your local system (e.g. remoting from
Windows to Linux, using WSL, and collaboration between windows and unix
users), the correct separator for a path may differ from the "native"
separator.
Previously, to work around this, Zed converted paths' separators in
numerous places. This was applied to both absolute and relative paths,
leading to incorrect conversions in some cases.
### Solution
Many code paths in Zed use paths that are *relative* to either a
worktree root or a git repository. This PR introduces a dedicated type
for these paths called `RelPath`, which stores the path in the same way
regardless of host platform, and offers `Path`-like manipulation APIs.
RelPath supports *displaying* the path using either separator, so that
we can display paths in a style that is determined at runtime based on
the current project.
The representation of absolute paths is left untouched, for now.
Absolute paths are different from relative paths because (except in
contexts where we know that the path refers to the local filesystem)
they should generally be treated as opaque strings. Currently we use a
mix of types for these paths (std::path::Path, String, SanitizedPath).

that it should be straightforward to add another transport to the
remoting system.

This removes around 900 unnecessary clones, ranging from cloning a few
ints all the way to large data structures and images.
A lot of these were fixed using `cargo clippy --fix --workspace
--all-targets`, however it often breaks other lints and needs to be run
again. This was then followed up with some manual fixing.
I understand this is a large diff, but all the changes are pretty
trivial. Rust is doing some heavy lifting here for us. Once I get it up
to speed with main, I'd appreciate this getting merged rather sooner
than later.
