This PR adds support for rendering **Netpbm** image formats (`.pbm`,
`.ppm`, `.pgm`) within Zed's built-in image viewer.
These formats are particularly useful for projects that want minimal
external dependencies, a common scenario in academic environments and
low-level graphics programming.
Since the underlying `image` crate and `GPUI` already provide support
for these codecs, this change explicitly exposes the `Pnm` variant
within `gpui::ImageFormat` by mapping it to `image::ImageFormat::Pnm`.
## Screenshots/Examples
Below is an example of `.pbm`, `.ppm`, and `.pgm` files being rendered
correctly in the image preview (images taken from
https://filesamples.com):

Release Notes:
- Added support for PNM image previews (`.pbm`, `.ppm`, `.pgm`).
Adds basic bookmark functionality to the editor, allowing users to mark
lines and later navigate between them. This is an MVP and will later be
expanded with a picker, vim marks integration and syntax tree based
bookmark positions. In this MVP bookmarks shift under external edits.
# UI
## Adding/Removing bookmarks
To add a bookmark:
- run the toggle bookmark action
- hold secondary and click in the gutter
- open the context menu by right clicking in the gutter and select add
bookmark To remove a bookmark:
- run the toggle bookmark action
- click on the bookmarks icon in the gutter
- open the context menu by right clicking in the gutter and select
remove bookmark
remove all bookmarks with `workspace: clear bookmarks`
# Implementation
This mirrors the implementation of breakpoints. The rendering of the
gutter was refactored to make place for bookmark icons and buttons:
- Code was extracted to a `Gutter` struct
- Runnables, breakpoints and bookmarks are now collected ahead of
layouting. Just before layouting we remove the items that collide and do
not have priority.
- The `phantom_breakpoint` is replaced by a `gutter_hover_button`
## In depth phantom breakpoint discussion:
This was phantom_breakpoint. It worked as follows:
- A fake breakpoint was added to the list of breakpoints.
- While rendering the breakpoints it a breakpoint turned out to be fake
it would get a different description and look.
- The breakpoint list was edited run_indicators ("play buttons")
rendering to removes the fake breakpoint if it collided.
This would not scale to more functionality. Now we only render
breakpoints, bookmarks and run indicators. Then we render a button if
there is not breakpoint, bookmark or run indicator already present. We
can do so since the rendering of such "gutter indicators" has been
refactored into two phases:
- collect the items.
- render them if no higher priority item collides.
This is far easier and more readable which enabled me to easily take the
phantom_breakpoint system and use it for placing bookmarks as well :)
Note: this was previously merged but it needed a better squashed commit
message. For the actual PR see: 51404. This reverts commit
1c3846e76f.
Release Notes:
- Added Bookmarks
Co-authored-by: Austin Cummings <me@austincummings.com>
Closes#4526
Adds basic bookmark functionality to the editor, allowing users to mark
lines and later navigate between them.
### What's new
**Toggling bookmarks**
Users can toggle a bookmark on the current line(s) via the `editor:
toggle bookmark` action. A bookmark icon appears in the gutter for each
bookmarked line.
**Navigation**
Two new actions, `editor: go to next bookmark` and `editor: go to
previous bookmark`, navigate between bookmarks in the current buffer,
wrapping around at the ends of the buffer.
**Viewing all bookmarks**
`editor: view bookmarks` opens all bookmarks across the project in a
multibuffer, similar to how references and diagnostics are surfaced.
**Clearing bookmarks**
`workspace: clear bookmarks` removes all bookmarks in the current
project.
**Persistence**
Bookmarks are persisted to the workspace database and restored when the
workspace is reopened. They are stored as `(path, row)` pairs and
resolved back to text anchors. Out of range or unresolvable bookmarks
are skipped with a logged warning.
**Gutter rendering**
Bookmark icons are rendered in the gutter using the existing gutter
button layout system, consistent with breakpoints. They are suppressed
on lines that already show a breakpoint or phantom breakpoint indicator.
A new `gutter.bookmarks` setting (defaulting to `true`) controls their
visibility.
### What's left
- [x] Lazily load buffers that have bookmarks
- [x] Clean up test boilerplate
- [ ] Assign default keybindings
- [ ] Compare line of saved bookmarks with current buffer (gray out the
"stale" bookmarks)
### What's next (and nice to haves)
- [ ] Resilience against external edits
- [ ] Save column position with the bookmark
- [ ] Bookmarks attached to syntactic structures?
- [ ] Labeled bookmarks?
---
Release Notes:
- Added bookmarks: toggle bookmarks on lines with `editor: toggle
bookmark`, navigate with `editor: go to next bookmark` / `editor: go to
previous bookmark`, view all bookmarks with `editor: view bookmarks`,
and clear with `workspace: clear bookmarks`. Bookmarks are shown in the
gutter and persisted across sessions.

This PR makes
`agent_ui::thread_worktree_archive::find_or_create_repository` whether
or not the repository it's searching for is on a remote machine. In the
case where it's on a remote machine that has an active connection in
Zed's connection pool, we return the repository; otherwise, we error
out.
I implemented it this way so archiving a thread on a remote machine that
isn't connected deletes the metadata without showing a remote connection
modal to a user. In the future, we can work around this by having better
git worktree garbage collection, where remote machines remove git
worktree's that were created by Zed and have no thread metadata on
connection too.
Finally, this PR gets archive threads working on remotes!
#### Follow Ups
1. Replace instances of `std::fs` with Zed's Fs trait in the archive
thread codepaths
2. Make archive thread work properly for workspace's that are not open

on LSP support
- hide the action for formatter modes that cannot honor selections, such
as external-command and code-action formatters
- keep the action handler safe by rechecking support and returning early
when range formatting is unavailable
- restrict capability checks to the servers actually registered for the
current buffer

### Summary
This PR implements remote support for git store operations that the
sidebar's archive thread checkpoint/restore featured relied on. This was
the second to last blocker for remote usage of this feature.
I also made a shared backend between `update_ref` and `delete_ref`
called `edit_ref` because they run the same git command and this allowed
for some code unification.
#### Remote Git Operations
- `Repository::update_ref`
- `Repository::delete_ref`
- `Repository::repair_worktrees`
- `Repository::create_archive_checkpoint`
- `Repository::restore_archive_checkpoint`
#### Follow up
`agent_ui::thread_worktree_archive::find_or_create_repository` needs to
be made aware of the remote machine that the repository it's searching
for is on. Once that is completed, we can get the correct repo when
archiving a remote thread and the flow should work without any problems.

- Remove the ability to pick a branch from the agent panel; delegate
this to the title bar picker
- Make the worktree creation earger, just as you selected whether you
want to create it from main or current branch
- Remove flicker when creating a new worktree and switching to a
previously existing one
- Improve some UI stuff: how we display that a worktree is
creating/loading, the branch and worktree icons, etc.
- Fixed a bug where worktrees in a detached HEAD state wouldn't show up
in the worktree pickers
A big part of the diff of this PR is the removal of everything involved
with the `StartThreadIn` enum/the set up involved in only creating the
worktree by the time of the first prompt send.

In `GitStore::open_diff_internal`, when opening a `DiffKind::Unstaged`
diff, we previously always overwrote the `unstaged_diff` field of
`BufferGitState`. This causes a bug in the following situation:
- We call `open_unstaged_diff`, and it hits an await point where it is
loading the index text
- While that task is suspended, we call `open_uncommitted_diff`. It
reaches `open_diff_internal` and sets
`buffer_git_state.uncommitted_diff` and
`buffer_git_state.unstaged_diff`. It also sets the secondary diff for
the uncommitted diff to be the unstaged diff that it just opened.
- The `open_unstaged_diff` task wakes up and enters
`open_diff_internal`. It creates a new entity for the unstaged diff and
overwrites `buffer_git_state.unstaged_diff` with it, but it doesn't
update the secondary diff of the uncommitted diff, which still has the
entity that was produced in the previous step.
- Now the uncommitted diff's secondary diff will never receive updates
from the `GitStore`, causing staging information to be incorrect.
The fix is for `open_diff_internal` to not overwrite an existing
unstaged diff.

Release Notes:
- Fixed a bug that could cause diff hunks to have an incorrect staged
status.
Because we weren't going through the normal npm subcommand route, we
weren't getting a prefix flag applied. Which meant some users were
seeing errors of incorrect package managers when used with a JS project.
We still want the agent to run in the project dir if we can, we just
don't want it resolving packages from that project. (This actually means
I can run it in our claude-agent-acp repo again :D )
I refactored the node_runtime functions a bit to make these subcommand
functions a bit more inline wiht each other and actually fixed an issue
where --prefix might have been added after `--` previously which
wouldn't be correct anyway.

## Context
When using a bare-repo-based git worktree layout (e.g. `foo/.bare` as
the bare repository and `foo/my-feature` as a linked worktree), the
"recent projects" modal was showing `foo/.bare` instead of
`foo/my-feature`.
The root cause was in `original_repo_path_from_common_dir` — when
resolving a linked worktree back to its "main" repo, the function reads
the `commondir` file which, for bare repos, points to the bare directory
itself (e.g. `foo/.bare`). Since that path doesn't end in `.git`, the
old code fell back to returning it as-is. This bare repo path was then
substituted into the workspace's stored paths, causing the modal to show
the bare directory instead of the actual worktree the user had opened.
The fix makes `original_repo_path_from_common_dir` return
`Option<PathBuf>`, returning `None` when `common_dir` doesn't end with
`.git`. `resolve_git_worktree_to_main_repo` propagates this `None`,
meaning the original worktree path is preserved in recent projects
rather than being replaced with the bare repo path.
Closes#52931

## How to Review
- **`crates/git/src/repository.rs`** :
`original_repo_path_from_common_dir` changed to return
`Option<PathBuf>`. Returns `None` for bare repos (no `.git` suffix). The
existing `original_repo_path` call site falls back to `work_directory`
when `None` is returned, preserving its prior behaviour. Unit test
expectations updated accordingly, with the bare-repo case now asserting
`None`.
- **`crates/project/src/git_store.rs`** :
`resolve_git_worktree_to_main_repo` now simply forwards the
`Option<PathBuf>` returned by `original_repo_path_from_common_dir`
directly, propagating `None` for bare repos so the caller keeps the
original worktree path.
- **`crates/workspace/src/persistence.rs`** : New test
`test_resolve_worktree_workspaces_bare_repo` exercises the exact
scenario from the issue: a workspace entry pointing to a linked worktree
whose `commondir` resolves to a bare repo. Asserts the path is left
unchanged.

worktree directory for bare-repo-based git worktree setups
Create worktrees in detached HEAD state, then attempt to check out the
requested branch. If the checkout fails (e.g. the branch is already in
use by another worktree), log a warning and stay in detached HEAD state
instead of showing an error to the user.
This simplifies the worktree creation flow by:
- Removing the occupied-branch fallback logic that would generate random
branch names
- Always using `CreateWorktreeTarget::Detached` for worktree creation
- Attempting branch checkout as a best-effort post-creation step
- Updating the branch picker UI to reflect the new behavior
Release Notes:
- Threads now start git worktrees in detached HEAD state if branch is in
use or unspecified, instead of generating a random branch name.

We need to reparse the base text using the same language as the main
buffer, whenever the main buffer's language changed. We already do this
for the uncommitted diff, but it was missing for the branch (OID-based)
diffs. (We don't need it for the unstaged diff because we don't
currently show you that base text anywhere in the UI, so its language is
immaterial.)

> **Foundation PRs:** #53732, #53733, #53734 — These three draft PRs
contain the base refactors (retained workspaces, agent panel overlay
split, ThreadId introduction) that this PR builds on.
## Goal
Remove `DraftId` and merge `draft_threads` + `background_threads` into a
single `retained_threads: HashMap<ThreadId, Entity<ConversationView>>`
in `AgentPanel`. A draft is just a thread that hasn't sent its first
message — no separate identity or storage needed.
## Changes
### agent_panel.rs
- Remove `DraftId` / `DraftIdCounter` / the `Global` impl
- Merge the two maps into `retained_threads`
- Add `thread_id: ThreadId` field to `BaseView::AgentThread`
- Rename methods: `create_draft` → `create_thread`, `activate_draft` →
`activate_retained_thread`, `remove_draft` → `remove_thread`, etc.
- Replace `clear_active_thread` with `show_or_create_empty_draft`
- Update `update_thread_work_dirs` to sync `ThreadMetadataStore` paths
when worktrees change
- Keep `load_agent_thread(...)` cleanup so activating a real thread
removes empty retained drafts
### sidebar.rs
- Remove `active_entry` derivation from `rebuild_contents` (was racing
with deferred effects)
- Add `sync_active_entry_from_panel` called from event handlers instead
- Simplify `ActiveEntry` — remove `ThreadActivation` struct, make
`session_id` optional
- Move `seen_thread_ids` to global scope (was per-group, causing
duplicate thread entries)
- Remove dead code: `clear_draft`, `render_draft_thread`
- Generalize `pending_remote_thread_activation` into
`pending_thread_activation` so all persisted-thread activations suppress
fallback draft reconciliation
- Set the activation guard before local persisted-thread activation
switches workspaces
- Make `reconcile_groups(...)` bail while a persisted-thread activation
is in flight
- On `ActiveViewChanged`, clear empty group drafts as soon as a pending
persisted-thread activation resolves
### thread_metadata_store.rs
- Make `ThreadMetadata.title` an `Option<SharedString>` with
`display_title()` fallback
- Add `update_worktree_paths` for batched path updates when project
worktrees change
### Other crates
- Update all `ThreadMetadata` construction sites and title display sites
across `agent_ui` and `sidebar`
## Fallback draft invariant
This PR now tightens the retained-thread invariant around fallback
drafts vs real thread activation/restoration:
- Fallback drafts are always empty
- User-created drafts worth preserving are non-empty
- While a persisted thread is being activated/restored/loaded, sidebar
reconciliation must not create an empty fallback draft for that target
group/workspace
- Once the real thread becomes active, empty fallback drafts in that
target group are removed
This is enforced by the sidebar-side activation guard plus existing
`AgentPanel` empty-draft cleanup after real-thread load.
## Tests
Added and/or kept focused sidebar regression coverage for:

`test_confirm_on_historical_thread_in_new_project_group_opens_real_thread`
-
`test_unarchive_into_inactive_existing_workspace_does_not_leave_active_draft`
-
`test_unarchive_after_removing_parent_project_group_restores_real_thread`
- `test_pending_thread_activation_suppresses_reconcile_draft_creation`
Focused test runs:
- `cargo test -p sidebar activate_archived_thread -- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar unarchive -- --nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar archive_last_thread_on_linked_worktree --
--nocapture`
- `cargo test -p sidebar

- Introduce `project_panel::Redo` action
- Update all platform keymaps in order to map
`redo`/`ctrl-shift-z`/`cmd-shift-z` to the `project_panel::Redo` action
### Restore Entry Support
- Update both `Project::delete_entry` and `Worktree::delete_entry` to
return the resulting `fs::TrashedEntry`
- Introduce both `Project::restore_entry` and `Worktree::restore_entry`
to allow restoring an entry in a worktree, given the `fs::TrashedEntry`
- Worth pointing out that support for restoring is not yet implemented
for remote worktrees, as that will be dealt with in a separate pull
request
### Undo Manager
- Split `ProjectPanelOperation` into two different enums, `Change` and
`Operation`
- While thinking through this, we noticed that simply recording the
operation that user was performing was not enough, specifically in the
case where undoing would restore the file, as in that specific case, we
needed the `trash::TrashedEntry` in order to be able to restore, so we
actually needed the result of executing the operation.
- Having that in mind, we decided to separate the operation (intent)
from the change (result), and record the change instead. With the change
being recorded, we can easily building the operation that needs to be
executed in order to invert that change.
- For example, if an user creates a new file, we record the
`ProjectPath` where the file was created, so that undoing can be a
matter of trashing that file. When undoing, we keep track of the
`trash::TrashedEntry` resulting from trashing the originally created
file, such that, redoing is a matter of restoring the
`trash::TrashedEntry`.
- Refer to the documentation in the `project_panel::undo` module for a
better breakdown on how this is implemented/handled.
- Introduce a task queue for dealing with recording changes, as well as
undo and redo requests in a sequential manner
- This meant moving some of the details in `UndoManager` to a
`project_panel::undo::Inner` implementation, and `UndoManager` now
serves as a simple wrapper/client around the inner implementation,
simply communicating with it to record changes and handle undo/redo
requests
- Callers that depend on the `UndoManager` now simply record which
changes they wish to track, which are then sent to the undo manager's
inner implementation
- Same for the undo and redo requests, those are simply sent to the undo
manager's inner implementation, which then deals with picking the
correct change from the history and executing its inverse operation
- Introduce support for tracking restore changes and operations
- `project_panel::undo::Change::Restored` – Keeps track that the
file/directory associated with the `ProjectPath` was a result of
restoring a trashed entry, for which we now that reverting is simply a
matter of trashing the path again
- `project_panel::undo::Operation::Restore` – Keeps track of both the
worktree id and the `TrashedEntry`, from which we can build the original
`ProjectPath` where the trashed entry needs to be restored
- Move project panel's undo tests to a separate module
`project_panel::tests::undo` to avoid growing the
`project::project_panel_tests` module into a monolithic test module
- Some of the functions in `project::project_panel_tests` were made
`pub(crate)` in order for us to be able to call those from
`project_panel::tests::undo`
### FS Changes
- Refactored the `Fs::trash_file` and `Fs::trash_dir` methods into a
single `Fs::trash` method
- This can now be done because `RealFs::trash_dir` and
`RealFs::trash_file` were simply calling `trash::delete_with_info`, so
we can simplify the trait
- Tests have also been simplified to reflect this new change, so we no
longer need a separate test for trashing a file and trashing a directory
- Update `Fs::trash` and `Fs::restore` to be async
- On the `RealFs` implementation we're now spawning a thread to perform
the trash/restore operation

This PR greatly improves our handling of remote threads in the sidebar.
One primary issue was that many parts of the sidebar were only looking
at a thread's path list and not its remote connection information. The
fix here is to use `ProjectGroupKey` more consistently throughout the
sidebar which also includes remote connection information.
The second major change is to extend the MultiWorkspace with the ability
to initiate the creation of remote workspaces when needed. This involved
refactoring a lot of our remote workspace creation paths to share a
single code path for better consistency.

make detached commits via `write-tree` + `commit-tree`.

Connect the git API and archived worktree data model to the sidebar's
archive/unarchive flow:
- Add `thread_worktree_archive` module: orchestrates the full archive
cycle (WIP commits, DB records, git refs, worktree deletion) and restore
cycle (detached worktree creation, reset to recover staged/unstaged
state, branch restoration)
- Integrate into sidebar: `archive_thread` now persists worktree state
before cleanup; `activate_archived_thread` restores worktrees via git
with targeted path replacement for multi-root threads
- Add pending worktree restore UI state with spinner and cancel button
- Show toast on restore failure instead of silent log
- Switch to surviving workspace when archiving active thread whose
workspace will be deleted
- Deserialize persisted `project_group_keys` on window restore
- Guard `cleanup_empty_workspaces` against dropped entities
- Await rollback DB operations instead of fire-and-forget
Part 3 of 3 in the persist-worktree stack. Stacked on #53214. This wires
up parts 1 and 2.
Release Notes:
- Added worktree state preservation when archiving agent threads,
automatically restoring staged and unstaged changes when the thread is
unarchived

Only affected ACP beta users, but important for testing and stabilizing
the feature.
We moved the ssh wrapping to be only added in the acp process creation
where it was needed.

Add the persistence layer for tracking archived git worktrees:
- `ArchivedGitWorktree` struct with `staged_commit_hash` and
`unstaged_commit_hash` fields to precisely identify WIP commits
- DB migrations for `archived_git_worktrees` and
`thread_archived_worktrees` (join table) tables
- CRUD operations: create, link to thread, query by thread, delete, mark
as restored
- `Column` impl for deserializing `ArchivedGitWorktree` from DB rows
- Tests for two-SHA round-trip, create/retrieve, delete, restore flag,
multi-thread linking, and multiple worktrees per thread

- `language_model` no longer depends on provider-specific crates such as
`anthropic` and `open_ai` (inverted dependency)
- `language_model_core` was extracted from `language_model` which
contains the types for the provider-specific crates to convert to/from.
- `gpui::SharedString` has been extracted into its own crate (still
exposed by `gpui`), so `language_model_core` and provider API crates
don't have to depend on `gpui`.
- Removes some unnecessary `&'static str` | `SharedString` -> `String`

Closes#50212
There are two unreasonable coupling account for this issue, the coupling
of `use_tree_sitter` with `languge_aware` in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/ca8bd8681c123b995b495a79d760bc0d88220fd0/crates/editor/src/element.rs#L3820-L3822
and the coupling of `language_aware` with `diagnostics` in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/ca8bd8681c123b995b495a79d760bc0d88220fd0/crates/language/src/buffer.rs#L3736-L3746
Because of these couplings, when the editor stops using Tree-sitter
highlighting when `"semantic_tokens"` set to `"full"`, it also
accidentally stops fetching diagnostic information. This is why error
and warning underlines disappear.
I’ve fixed this by adding a separate `use_tree_sitter` parameter to
`highlighted_chunks`. This way, we can keep `language_aware` true to get
the diagnostic data we need, but still decide whether or not to apply
Tree-sitter highlights. I chose to fix this at the `highlighted_chunks`
level because I’m worried that changing the logic in the deeper layers
of the DisplayMap or Buffer might have too many side effects that are
hard to predict. This approach feels like a safer way to solve the
problem.

- Fixed a bug where diagnostic underlines disappeared when
"semantic_tokens" set to "full"

Context
The markdown preview had no search functionality — pressing Ctrl+F did
nothing. This PR implements the SearchableItem trait for
MarkdownPreviewView, enabling in-pane text search with match
highlighting and navigation.
Changes span four crates:
- project: Added SearchQuery::search_str() — a synchronous method to
search plain &str text, since the existing search() only works on
BufferSnapshot.
- markdown: Added search highlight storage to the Markdown entity and
paint_search_highlights to MarkdownElement. Extracted the existing
selection painting into a reusable paint_highlight_range helper to avoid
duplicating quad-painting logic.
- markdown_preview: Implemented SearchableItem with full match
navigation, active match tracking, and proper SearchEvent emission
matching Editor behavior.
- Keymaps: Added buffer_search::Deploy bindings to the MarkdownPreview
context on all three platforms.
The PR hopefully Closes

How to Review
1. crates/project/src/search.rs — search_str method at the end of impl
SearchQuery. Handles both Text (AhoCorasick) and Regex variants with
whole-word and multiline support.
2. crates/markdown/src/markdown.rs — Three areas:
- New fields and methods on Markdown struct (~line 264, 512-548)
- paint_highlight_range extraction and paint_search_highlights (~line
1059-1170)
- The single-line addition in Element::paint (~line 2003)
3. crates/markdown_preview/src/markdown_preview_view.rs — The main
change. Focus on:
- SearchEvent::MatchesInvalidated emission in schedule_markdown_update
(line 384)
- EventEmitter<SearchEvent> and as_searchable (lines 723, 748-754)
- The SearchableItem impl (lines 779-927), especially active_match_index
which computes position from old highlights to handle query changes
correctly
4. Keymap files — Two lines each for Linux/Windows, one for macOS.

As part of the work that is being developed for the Project Panel's Undo
& Redo system, in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/tree/5039-create-redo , we're
implementing an asynchronous task queue which simply receives a message
with the operation/change that is meant to be carried out, in order to
ensure these run in a sequential fashion.
While trying to use `futures_channel::mpsc::Receiver`, it was noted that
`recv` method was not available so this Pull Request updates the
`futures` crate to `0.3.32`, where it is available.
This version also deprecates `try_next` in favor of `try_recv` so this
Pull Request updates existing callers of `try_next` to use `try_recv`,
which was mostly updating the expected return type from
`Result<Option<T>>` to `Result<T>`.

Implements the four git checkpoint operations (`create`, `restore`,
`compare`, `diff`) that had been stubbed out for remote repositories,
and related test infrastructure.
Testing steps:
1. Open a project with a `.devcontainer` configuration and connect to
the Dev Container
2. Open an Agent thread and ask the agent to make a code change
3. After the agent completes, verify the "Restore from checkpoint"
button appears (previously missing in Dev Container sessions)
4. Click "Restore from checkpoint" and confirm the file reverts to its
prior state
Release Notes:
- Added support for git checkpoint operations in remote/Dev Container
sessions, restoring the "Restore from checkpoint" button in Agent
threads.

### Summary
This PR starts work on adding basic hook support in the `TaskStore`. To
enable users to setup tasks that are ran when the agent panel creates a
new git worktree to start a thread in. It also adds a new task variable
called `ZED_MAIN_GIT_WORKTREE` that's the absolute path to the main repo
that the newly created linked worktree is based off of.
### Follow Ups
- Get this hook working with the git worktree picker as well
- Make a more general approach to the hook system in `TaskStore`
- Add `ZED_PORT_{1..10}` task variables
- Migrate the task context creation code from `task_ui` to the basic
context provider

## Context
### Background
Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:
- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer
### Purpose of this PR
This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.
The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn buffer_anchor_to_anchor(&self, anchor: text::Anchor) -> Option<multi_buffer::Anchor>;
}
```
And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.
There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.
### Other changes
There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:
- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):
```
enum Anchor {
Min,
Excerpt {
text_anchor: text::Anchor,
path_key_index: PathKeyIndex,
diff_base_anchor: Option<text::Anchor>,
},
Max,
}
```
That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were
doing that were buggy for min/max! Instead, we have a new API that
correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:
```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
fn anchor_to_buffer_anchor(&self, anchor: multi_buffer::Anchor) -> Option<text::Anchor>;
}
```
- `MultiBufferExcerpt` has been removed in favor of a new
`map_excerpt_ranges` API directly on `MultiBufferSnapshot`.

This hang was caused by emitting the Git Graph Count Updated event for
every commit being added to the graph instead of every batch of commits.
This would cause gpui to have a massive amount of events to handle on
the foreground thread, even if most of them had very little work
involved.
For example, Zed graph has over 80k commits, that means we were emitting
80k plus events instead of 80.

When a single-file worktree's root file no longer exists, the background
scanner would previously enter an infinite retry loop attempting to
canonicalize the path. This caused continuous error logging and resource
waste.
This fix detects when a single-file worktree root cannot be
canonicalized (after attempting the file handle fallback) and emits a
new Deleted event, allowing the worktree to be properly closed.
This is most commonly encountered with temporary files, logs, and
similar files that are opened in Zed and then deleted externally, but
persist in the workspace database across sessions.

- git: Forbid main git worktree deletion from git worktree picker
---------
Co-authored-by: Eric Holk <eric@zed.dev>
For submodules, `common_dir_abs_path` equals `repository_dir_abs_path`
(since submodules don't have a `commondir` file). The previous code
passed this path to `original_repo_path_from_common_dir`
unconditionally, which returned the `.git/modules/<name>` path as the
`original_repo_abs_path` — causing `linked_worktree_path()` to return a
false positive for submodules.
Now we detect linked worktrees by checking whether `common_dir` differs
from `repository_dir` (only true for actual linked worktrees that have a
`commondir` file). For normal repos and submodules,
`original_repo_abs_path` is simply `work_directory_abs_path`.
Also fixes the misleading doc comment on `common_dir_abs_path` in
`LocalRepositoryEntry` and adds test assertions for
`original_repo_abs_path` and `linked_worktree_path()` on both worktrees
and submodules.
Closes AI-102
Release Notes:
- Fixed git submodules being incorrectly classified as linked worktrees,
which could cause issues with worktree-related operations.
All local agent server types were calling `local_directory_environment`
with `paths::home_dir()`, causing direnv and shell environment to be
loaded from `~` rather than the project's worktree directory. This meant
project-specific `.envrc` variables (e.g. Google Vertex credentials)
were never picked up by external agents like Claude.
Added `default_environment()` on `ProjectEnvironment` that resolves the
default visible worktree path and uses it for environment loading,
falling back to home_dir() only when no worktree is available.
