### Summary

This PR makes
`agent_ui::thread_worktree_archive::find_or_create_repository` whether
or not the repository it's searching for is on a remote machine. In the
case where it's on a remote machine that has an active connection in
Zed's connection pool, we return the repository; otherwise, we error
out.
I implemented it this way so archiving a thread on a remote machine that
isn't connected deletes the metadata without showing a remote connection
modal to a user. In the future, we can work around this by having better
git worktree garbage collection, where remote machines remove git
worktree's that were created by Zed and have no thread metadata on
connection too.
Finally, this PR gets archive threads working on remotes!
#### Follow Ups
1. Replace instances of `std::fs` with Zed's Fs trait in the archive
thread codepaths
2. Make archive thread work properly for workspace's that are not open
(local and remote)

### Summary
This PR implements remote support for git store operations that the
sidebar's archive thread checkpoint/restore featured relied on. This was
the second to last blocker for remote usage of this feature.
I also made a shared backend between `update_ref` and `delete_ref`
called `edit_ref` because they run the same git command and this allowed
for some code unification.
#### Remote Git Operations
- `Repository::update_ref`
- `Repository::delete_ref`
- `Repository::repair_worktrees`
- `Repository::create_archive_checkpoint`
- `Repository::restore_archive_checkpoint`
#### Follow up
`agent_ui::thread_worktree_archive::find_or_create_repository` needs to
be made aware of the remote machine that the repository it's searching
for is on. Once that is completed, we can get the correct repo when
archiving a remote thread and the flow should work without any problems.

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/53262
- Remove the ability to pick a branch from the agent panel; delegate
this to the title bar picker
- Make the worktree creation earger, just as you selected whether you
want to create it from main or current branch
- Remove flicker when creating a new worktree and switching to a
previously existing one
- Improve some UI stuff: how we display that a worktree is
creating/loading, the branch and worktree icons, etc.
- Fixed a bug where worktrees in a detached HEAD state wouldn't show up
in the worktree pickers
A big part of the diff of this PR is the removal of everything involved
with the `StartThreadIn` enum/the set up involved in only creating the
worktree by the time of the first prompt send.
Release Notes:
- Agent: Improved and simplified the UX of creating threads in Git
worktrees.
- Git: Fixed a bug where worktrees in a detached HEAD state wouldn't
show up in the worktree picker.

In `GitStore::open_diff_internal`, when opening a `DiffKind::Unstaged`
diff, we previously always overwrote the `unstaged_diff` field of
`BufferGitState`. This causes a bug in the following situation:
- We call `open_unstaged_diff`, and it hits an await point where it is
loading the index text
- While that task is suspended, we call `open_uncommitted_diff`. It
reaches `open_diff_internal` and sets
`buffer_git_state.uncommitted_diff` and
`buffer_git_state.unstaged_diff`. It also sets the secondary diff for
the uncommitted diff to be the unstaged diff that it just opened.
- The `open_unstaged_diff` task wakes up and enters
`open_diff_internal`. It creates a new entity for the unstaged diff and
overwrites `buffer_git_state.unstaged_diff` with it, but it doesn't
update the secondary diff of the uncommitted diff, which still has the
entity that was produced in the previous step.
- Now the uncommitted diff's secondary diff will never receive updates
from the `GitStore`, causing staging information to be incorrect.
The fix is for `open_diff_internal` to not overwrite an existing
unstaged diff.

## Context
When using a bare-repo-based git worktree layout (e.g. `foo/.bare` as
the bare repository and `foo/my-feature` as a linked worktree), the
"recent projects" modal was showing `foo/.bare` instead of
`foo/my-feature`.
The root cause was in `original_repo_path_from_common_dir` — when
resolving a linked worktree back to its "main" repo, the function reads
the `commondir` file which, for bare repos, points to the bare directory
itself (e.g. `foo/.bare`). Since that path doesn't end in `.git`, the
old code fell back to returning it as-is. This bare repo path was then
substituted into the workspace's stored paths, causing the modal to show
the bare directory instead of the actual worktree the user had opened.
The fix makes `original_repo_path_from_common_dir` return
`Option<PathBuf>`, returning `None` when `common_dir` doesn't end with
`.git`. `resolve_git_worktree_to_main_repo` propagates this `None`,
meaning the original worktree path is preserved in recent projects
rather than being replaced with the bare repo path.
Closes#52931

## How to Review
- **`crates/git/src/repository.rs`** :
`original_repo_path_from_common_dir` changed to return
`Option<PathBuf>`. Returns `None` for bare repos (no `.git` suffix). The
existing `original_repo_path` call site falls back to `work_directory`
when `None` is returned, preserving its prior behaviour. Unit test
expectations updated accordingly, with the bare-repo case now asserting
`None`.
- **`crates/project/src/git_store.rs`** :
`resolve_git_worktree_to_main_repo` now simply forwards the
`Option<PathBuf>` returned by `original_repo_path_from_common_dir`
directly, propagating `None` for bare repos so the caller keeps the
original worktree path.
- **`crates/workspace/src/persistence.rs`** : New test
`test_resolve_worktree_workspaces_bare_repo` exercises the exact
scenario from the issue: a workspace entry pointing to a linked worktree
whose `commondir` resolves to a bare repo. Asserts the path is left
unchanged.

Create worktrees in detached HEAD state, then attempt to check out the
requested branch. If the checkout fails (e.g. the branch is already in
use by another worktree), log a warning and stay in detached HEAD state
instead of showing an error to the user.
This simplifies the worktree creation flow by:
- Removing the occupied-branch fallback logic that would generate random
branch names
- Always using `CreateWorktreeTarget::Detached` for worktree creation
- Attempting branch checkout as a best-effort post-creation step
- Updating the branch picker UI to reflect the new behavior
Release Notes:
- Threads now start git worktrees in detached HEAD state if branch is in
use or unspecified, instead of generating a random branch name.

We need to reparse the base text using the same language as the main
buffer, whenever the main buffer's language changed. We already do this
for the uncommitted diff, but it was missing for the branch (OID-based)
diffs. (We don't need it for the unstaged diff because we don't
currently show you that base text anywhere in the UI, so its language is
immaterial.)

Connect the git API and archived worktree data model to the sidebar's
archive/unarchive flow:
- Add `thread_worktree_archive` module: orchestrates the full archive
cycle (WIP commits, DB records, git refs, worktree deletion) and restore
cycle (detached worktree creation, reset to recover staged/unstaged
state, branch restoration)
- Integrate into sidebar: `archive_thread` now persists worktree state
before cleanup; `activate_archived_thread` restores worktrees via git
with targeted path replacement for multi-root threads
- Add pending worktree restore UI state with spinner and cancel button
- Show toast on restore failure instead of silent log
- Switch to surviving workspace when archiving active thread whose
workspace will be deleted
- Deserialize persisted `project_group_keys` on window restore
- Guard `cleanup_empty_workspaces` against dropped entities
- Await rollback DB operations instead of fire-and-forget
Part 3 of 3 in the persist-worktree stack. Stacked on #53214. This wires
up parts 1 and 2.

Add the persistence layer for tracking archived git worktrees:
- `ArchivedGitWorktree` struct with `staged_commit_hash` and
`unstaged_commit_hash` fields to precisely identify WIP commits
- DB migrations for `archived_git_worktrees` and
`thread_archived_worktrees` (join table) tables
- CRUD operations: create, link to thread, query by thread, delete, mark
as restored
- `Column` impl for deserializing `ArchivedGitWorktree` from DB rows
- Tests for two-SHA round-trip, create/retrieve, delete, restore flag,
multi-thread linking, and multiple worktrees per thread

Extend the git API with several new capabilities needed for worktree
archival and restoration:
- Add `allow_empty` flag to `CommitOptions` for creating WIP marker
commits
- Change `create_worktree` to accept `Option<String>` branch, enabling
detached worktree creation when `None` is passed
- Add `head_sha()` to read the current HEAD commit hash
- Add `update_ref()` and `delete_ref()` for managing git references
- Add `stage_all_including_untracked()` to stage everything before a WIP
commit
- Implement all new operations in `FakeGitRepository` with functional
commit history tracking, reset support, and ref management
- Update existing call sites for the new `CommitOptions` field and
`create_worktree` signature

### Summary
This PR fixes an issue where the git graph wouldn't refresh its state
correctly unless HEAD changed. Now repository emits events when the
branch list has changed, and invalidates the graph data cache when the
stash or branch list has changed.

`Repository::HeadChanged` as well.

As part of the work that is being developed for the Project Panel's Undo
& Redo system, in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/tree/5039-create-redo , we're
implementing an asynchronous task queue which simply receives a message
with the operation/change that is meant to be carried out, in order to
ensure these run in a sequential fashion.
While trying to use `futures_channel::mpsc::Receiver`, it was noted that
`recv` method was not available so this Pull Request updates the
`futures` crate to `0.3.32`, where it is available.
This version also deprecates `try_next` in favor of `try_recv` so this
Pull Request updates existing callers of `try_next` to use `try_recv`,
which was mostly updating the expected return type from
`Result<Option<T>>` to `Result<T>`.

Closes#47907
Implements the four git checkpoint operations (`create`, `restore`,
`compare`, `diff`) that had been stubbed out for remote repositories,
and related test infrastructure.
Testing steps:
1. Open a project with a `.devcontainer` configuration and connect to
the Dev Container
2. Open an Agent thread and ask the agent to make a code change
3. After the agent completes, verify the "Restore from checkpoint"
button appears (previously missing in Dev Container sessions)
4. Click "Restore from checkpoint" and confirm the file reverts to its
prior state
Release Notes:
- Added support for git checkpoint operations in remote/Dev Container
sessions, restoring the "Restore from checkpoint" button in Agent
threads.

### Summary
This PR starts work on adding basic hook support in the `TaskStore`. To
enable users to setup tasks that are ran when the agent panel creates a
new git worktree to start a thread in. It also adds a new task variable
called `ZED_MAIN_GIT_WORKTREE` that's the absolute path to the main repo
that the newly created linked worktree is based off of.
### Follow Ups
- Get this hook working with the git worktree picker as well
- Make a more general approach to the hook system in `TaskStore`
- Add `ZED_PORT_{1..10}` task variables
- Migrate the task context creation code from `task_ui` to the basic
context provider

This hang was caused by emitting the Git Graph Count Updated event for
every commit being added to the graph instead of every batch of commits.
This would cause gpui to have a massive amount of events to handle on
the foreground thread, even if most of them had very little work
involved.
For example, Zed graph has over 80k commits, that means we were emitting
80k plus events instead of 80.

For submodules, `common_dir_abs_path` equals `repository_dir_abs_path`
(since submodules don't have a `commondir` file). The previous code
passed this path to `original_repo_path_from_common_dir`
unconditionally, which returned the `.git/modules/<name>` path as the
`original_repo_abs_path` — causing `linked_worktree_path()` to return a
false positive for submodules.
Now we detect linked worktrees by checking whether `common_dir` differs
from `repository_dir` (only true for actual linked worktrees that have a
`commondir` file). For normal repos and submodules,
`original_repo_abs_path` is simply `work_directory_abs_path`.
Also fixes the misleading doc comment on `common_dir_abs_path` in
`LocalRepositoryEntry` and adds test assertions for
`original_repo_abs_path` and `linked_worktree_path()` on both worktrees
and submodules.
Closes AI-102

- Fixed git submodules being incorrectly classified as linked worktrees,
which could cause issues with worktree-related operations.

Release Notes:
- git: Speed up UI responsiveness to branch/worktree changes
When a git worktree is in a detached HEAD state (e.g. after `git
checkout --detach`), the workspace for that worktree would disappear
from the sidebar UI, and if the workspace was currently open your UI
would just disappear.
This happened because `parse_worktrees_from_str` silently dropped any
worktree entries without a `branch` line in the porcelain output, which
cascaded through the `linked_worktrees` list and caused
`prune_stale_worktree_workspaces` to remove the workspace.
This PR:
- Makes `Worktree::ref_name` an `Option<SharedString>` so detached
worktrees can be represented
- Renames `Worktree::branch()` to `Worktree::display_name()`, which
returns the branch name when available or the short SHA as a fallback
(mirroring how the title bar already handles detached HEAD for
repositories)
- Updates `parse_worktrees_from_str` to include detached and bare
worktree entries instead of dropping them
- Filters detached worktrees out of the worktree picker UI, preserving
the existing product decision to only show branch-based worktrees there

Closes#48256
It appears that the current git remotes support was implemented in
#42819, following the design described in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/42486#issuecomment-3524092306.
That design does not include an interaction for deleting remotes, but
the delete remote branch action was mistakenly implemented as deleting
the remote itself.
After this PR, there should be no code paths that use `remove_remote`
anymore. I've kept it for now though, as it may be useful when we
introduce the corresponding interaction in the future.
Release Notes:
- Fixed a bug where deleting a remote branch from the branch picker
would incorrectly remove the entire remote configuration
With a large number of files in the git status, pressing stage/unstage
could cause a noticeable freeze. The async performance profiler showed
that the task spawned inside `change_all_files_stage` blocked the main
thread for 300ms+, resulting in a clear and visible UI stall. The main
cause was the need to traverse all entries to determine what to stage or
unstage, which becomes expensive for large change sets.
Same repro as: #47800

This should be the last step in implementing full git worktree support
in the `GitStore`. We still need to add UI for that allows a user to
rename a git worktree and, by extension git branches if we use the git
picker to do so.
Also, I added a helper function called `disallow_guest_request::<T>` to
the `Collab::rpc` that is used to specify a proto request isn't allowed
to be sent by a guest. This enabled me to add a regression test that
checks that a guest isn't allowed to delete a git worktree, without the
test hanging forever because it's waiting for the proto server to
respond.
Since SSH connections send the proto message directly from client to
remote host, this won't affect those requests.

Follow up on: https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/49519
This PR reworks how Zed calculates diff num stats by moving the
calculation to the `RepositorySnapshot` layer, instead of the
`GitPanel`. This has a couple of benefits:
1. Snapshot recalculations are already set up to recompute on file
system changes and only update the affected files. This means that diff
stats don't need to manage their own subscription or states anymore like
they did in the original PR.
2. We're able to further separate the data layer from the UI. Before,
the git panel owned all the subscriptions and tasks that refreshed the
diff stat, now the repository does, which is more inline with the code
base.
3. Integration tests are cleaner because `FakeRepository` can handle all
the data and calculations of diff stat and make it accessible to more
tests in the codebase. Because a lot of tests wouldn't initialize the
git panel when they used the git repository.
4. This made implementing remote/collab support for this feature
streamline. Remote clients wouldn't get the same buffer events as local
clients, so they wouldn't know that the diff stat state has been updated
and invalidate their data.
5. File system changes that happened outside of Zed now trigger the diff
stat refresh because we're using the `RepositorySnapshot`.
I added some integration tests as well to make sure collab support is
working this time. Finally, adding the initial diff calculation to
`compute_snapshot` didn't affect performance for me when checking
against chromium's diff with HEAD~1000. So this should be a safe change
to make.
I decided to add diff stats on the status entry struct because it made
updating changed paths and the collab database much simpler than having
two separate SumTrees. Also whenever the UI got a file's status it would
check its diff stat as well, so this change makes that code more
streamlined as well.

This PR cleans up the git command spawning by wrapping everything in
GitBinary instead to follow a builder/factory pattern. It also extends
trusted workspace support to git commands.
I also added a `clippy.toml` configuration to our git crate that warns
against using `Command` struct to spawn git commands instead of going
through `GitBinary`. This should help us maintain the factory pattern in
the future

Release Notes:
- git: Add trusted workspace support for Zed's git integration
Closes#48434
In Dev Containers, failed git operations were surfaced with a generic
failure message, while the useful git output (stderr/stdout) was not
reliably available to users.
This happened because in devcontainers the git operation errors go
through an RPC layer and then got wrapped with `anyhow::Context` (e.g.
“sending pull request”); the toast displayed only that outer context via
`to_string()`, masking the underlying git stderr message.
This change ensures the full git operation output is preserved and
surfaced via Zed’s “See logs” flow in Dev Containers, matching the
information you get when running the same git command in a terminal.
### What you should expect in the UI
- You will see a generic toast like “git pull failed” / “git push
failed”.
- When clicking on the toast’s “See logs”, the log tab now contains the
full git error output (e.g. non-fast-forward hints, merge conflict
details, “local changes would be overwritten”, etc.), which previously
could be missing/too generic.
---
## Manual testing
Run inside a Dev Container and ensure git auth works (SSH keys/agent or
HTTPS credentials).
1. **Dirty-tree pull failure**
- Make remote ahead by 1 commit (push from another clone).
- Locally modify the same file without committing.
- In Zed: **Pull**
- **Expect:** toast “git pull failed” + **See logs** shows “local
changes would be overwritten…” (or equivalent).
2. **Non-fast-forward push failure**
- Ensure remote ahead.
- Locally create 1 commit.
- In Zed: **Push**
- **Expect:** toast “git push failed” + **See logs** shows “rejected
(non-fast-forward)” + hint to pull first.
3. **Merge-conflict pull failure**
- Create conflicting commits on the same lines (one local commit, one
remote commit).
- In Zed: **Pull**
- **Expect:** toast “git pull failed” + **See logs** shows conflict
output (“CONFLICT…”, “Automatic merge failed…”).

This is a follow-up on #50027
I address my comments by adding a hash map look-up to find the selected
pending commit. I also removed the limitation where we would only retry
finding the pending commit 5 times. The pending selection is removed
when the graph is fully loaded and doesn't contain the pending commit.
This PR also cleans up some internal code structure and starts work to
enable search and propagating git log error messages to the UI.
UI wise I made the git graph item show the repository name instead of
"Git Graph" in Zed.

This PR Fixes a loading performance regresssion inside the git graph.
The main issue is that we always acted on the received repository
events, this is good in 9 out of 10 cases except for the initial loading
phase of the git graph. This is because we invalidate the graph data
every time we receive a `GitStoreEvent::ActiveRepositoryChanged`,
`RepositoryEvent::BranchChanged` or `RepositoryEvent::MergeHeadsChanged`
event this still sounds good, but the caveat is that we receive these 3
events on initial repository loading. This happens when you start up Zed
and is getting the active repository, branch ect. from your project.
When it detects a repository/branch etc. it checks if it has been
changed and emits an event for it. This is always the case for initial
repository loading, because the active repository/branch always start as
**None**. So receive an event for these non actual changes makes the git
graph cancel its initial loading and start fetching again on every
invalidated graph data call.
We fixed this by checking the **scan_id** of the repo to check if the
repo has been initialized, if its bigger then 1 we know we need to
invalidate the data because it was a actual user change instead of a
initial loading event.

Add `agent_worktree_directory` to `GitSettings` for configuring where
agent worktrees are stored (default: Zed data dir). Remove `Copy` derive
from `GitSettings`/`GitContentSettings` (incompatible with String field)
and fix downstream `.as_ref().unwrap()` call sites.
Define `AgentGitWorktreeInfo` (branch, worktree_path, base_ref) and add
it to `DbThread` + `DbThreadMetadata` for persistence and session list
display.

This PR adds a button in the `git: branch diff` view that allows to
quickly and easily send the entire diff to your last used agent for a
review. What this does is automatically submits a (pre-written and
generic) prompt to the last agents you were using in the agent panel
with the whole content of your diff.

This PR makes it so that `open_diff_since`, as used by the branch diff,
is able to return a stable diff entity instead of creating a new one
every time this is called. In particular, the base text buffer for this
diff is now stable across branch diff refreshes, making it usable with
the side-by-side view. The strategy for keeping the diff entities alive
is the same one that we use for the uncommitted and unstaged diffs--the
`GitStore` only holds a weak pointer to each "since" diff, so when these
diffs are no longer in use by the branch diff multibuffer they can be
cleaned up.

Skipping setting the language on the git index text buffer improves
snappiness for (very) large git diff multibuffers and also significantly
lower peak and steady-state RSS. When tested on the chromium repo with
`git reset HEAD~1000` and *all* language extensions installed we notice:
* current `main`: peak RSS ~45GB, ss RSS ~39GB
* this patch: peak RSS ~30GB, ss RSS ~27GB
Release Notes:
- Improved memory usage of large git diff multibuffers.
Closes#26866
### Summary
Adds a git graph to Zed, accessible via the `git_graph::Open` action if
a project has an active repository. There's still more to do, but this
is a solid foundation to expand upon. The code structure is in line with
Zed's codebase and shouldn't require architectural changes to add
missing features.
The git graph can be opened via the command palette (`git graph: open`)
or by binding a key to `git_graph::Open`. It's available when the
project has an active git repository.
### Architecture
Similar to the Debugger, the git graph is split between a data layer and
a view/UI layer. When the view layer is rendering, it queries the data
layer for its active state. This setup allows the data layer to lazily
request graph data (only when needed for rendering), abstracts collab
from the view layer, allows most of the data loading to happen on a
background thread, and makes caching easy to implement.
#### Graph Loading
The graph data is loaded in two phases:
1. `Repository::graph_data()` streams commit structure (SHA, parents,
refs) in chunks of 1000 via `git log`
2. `CommitDataReader` lazily fetches full commit details (author,
timestamp, subject) on-demand using a persistent `git cat-file --batch`
process
This two-phase approach makes the initial loading of the graph as fast
as possible, because `git log` takes significantly longer when all the
needed graph data is queried through it. Zed then lazily loads commits
in the user's viewport through `cat-file --batch`. This makes scrolling
to any place in the graph extremely snappy and benefits the
collaborative architecture by only fetching data needed to render the
graph. It also allows Zed to share commit data between different graph
visualizations (e.g., date order vs. topological order).
#### Performance
Tested on both the Zed and LLVM repositories with good performance in
both cases. The two-phase loading approach and lazy fetching keep the UI
responsive even with large commit histories.
#### Testing
I added property testing that builds randomized commit graphs and
verifies that the graph is constructed correctly. This also works as an
integration test and will be expanded in the future to test collab graph
visualization, graph filtering, commit actions, etc.
### New Crate
- `git_graph` (GPL-licensed) — contains UI and graph computation logic
### Not Yet Implemented
- Remote repository support (collab)
- Filtering by branch
- Commit actions (checkout, cherry-pick, etc.)
- Search
- Open commit view for selected commit
- Resizable columns
- Column filtering
