Jake AbendrothandCole Miller 728cb247e9 buffer_diff: Canonicalize ambiguous hunk placement to fix staging corruption (#60584)
Closes #60424

## Problem

With the repro from #60424, staging the first deletion hunk marked the
second deletion as staged in the UI even though git still had it
unstaged, and clicking the (incorrectly shown) Unstage button inserted a
duplicate copy of the hunk's contents into the git index on every click.

The root cause is ambiguous hunk placement. The committed text contains
repeated `end\n\n` line runs, so the deletion hunks can "slide": more
than one placement produces a minimal diff. The uncommitted diff (HEAD
vs worktree) anchored the remaining deletion at one row while the
unstaged diff (index vs worktree), recomputed after the partial stage,
anchored the same logical deletion at a different row. Everything that
correlates hunks across those two diffs assumes they agree on positions:

- the secondary-status matching in `hunks_intersecting_range_impl` found
no unstaged hunk at the uncommitted hunk's rows and reported it as
staged (`NoSecondaryHunk`);
- the worktree→index projection in `compute_uncommitted_index_edits`
treated the hunk's position as unchanged text and, on unstage, inserted
the hunk's HEAD content at an index position that already contained it,
duplicating it on every request.

## Fix

Upgrade `imara-diff` from 0.1.8 to 0.2.0 and run
`Diff::postprocess_lines` (imara-diff's port of git's xdiff
slider/indent heuristic) after computing hunks in `buffer_diff`. This
canonicalizes the placement of ambiguous hunks based only on their local
content, so diffs of the same buffer against different base texts anchor
the same logical change at the same rows. A bonus is that Zed's hunk
placement now matches `git diff`'s output for such cases (git has used
the indent heuristic by default since 2.11).

As defense in depth, `compute_uncommitted_index_edits` now drops a
pure-insertion index edit whose content is already present at the target
position, so a stale secondary status can no longer duplicate index
content.

The imara-diff 0.2 API removed the `Sink` trait and the top-level
`diff()` function, so the other call sites (`language/text_diff.rs`,
`zeta_prompt/udiff.rs`, `edit_prediction_metrics/reversal.rs`) are
migrated mechanically to `Diff::compute` + `hunks()` with unchanged
behavior (0.2 also renamed `lines_with_terminator` to `lines` and
changed the default `&str` tokenization to include terminators; the
unified-diff builders keep terminator-less tokens via `str::lines()`).

## Testing

- New regression test `test_staging_hunks_with_ambiguous_placement`
replays the exact repro from #60424 (same file contents): stages the
first deletion, asserts the remaining hunks keep their unstaged status
and the index matches exactly, then issues repeated unstage requests for
the unstaged hunk and asserts the index is unchanged. Before the fix
this test showed the second hunk flipping to staged and the index
growing by one copy of the deleted block per unstage request.
- `buffer_diff`, `language`, `zeta_prompt`, `edit_prediction_metrics`,
`multi_buffer`, `git_ui`, `editor`, and the `project` integration suite
pass.
- One test expectation updated: `editor::test_fold_function_bodies`
asserted the old placement of an ambiguous deletion (blank line before
comment); the canonicalized placement (comment before blank line)
matches what `git diff` produces for the same texts.

Release Notes:

- Fixed staging a hunk sometimes marking a different hunk as staged (and
subsequent unstaging corrupting the git index) when the diff contained
repeated lines
([#60424](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/60424)).

Max Brunsfeld 329970bff1 Improve edit prediction example capture (#45536)
This PR improves the `edit prediction: Capture Example` in several ways:
* fixed bugs in how the uncommitted diff was calculated
* added a `edit_predictions.examples_dir` setting that can be set in
order to have the action automatically save examples into the given
folder
* moved the action into the `edit_predictions` crate, in preparation for
collecting this data passively from end users, when they have opted in
to data sharing, similar to what we did for Zeta 1

Anthony Eid 2e6cb29324 git: Show pure white space changes in word diffs (#45090)
Closes #44624

Before this change, white space would be trimmed from word diff ranges.
Users found this behavior confusing, so we're changing it to be more
inline with how GitHub treats whitespace in their word diffs.

Release Notes:

0a7dd70657 git: Add word diff highlighting (#43269)
This PR adds word/character diff for expanded diff hunks that have both
a deleted and added section, as well as a setting `word_diff_enabled` to
enable/disable word diffs per language.

- `word_diff_enabled`: Defaults to true. Whether or not expanded diff
hunks will show word diff highlights when they're able to.

### Architecture

I had three architecture goals I wanted to have when adding word diff
support:

- Caching: We should only calculate word diffs once and save the result.
This is because calculating word diffs can be expensive, and Zed should
always be responsive.
- Don't block the main thread: Word diffs should be computed in the
background to prevent hanging Zed.
- Lazy calculation: We should calculate word diffs for buffers that are
not visible to a user.

To accomplish the three goals, word diffs are computed as a part of
`BufferDiff` diff hunk processing because it happens on a background
thread, is cached until the file is edited, and is only refreshed for
open buffers.

My original implementation calculated word diffs every frame in the
Editor element. This had the benefit of lazy evaluation because it only
calculated visible frames, but it didn't have caching for the
calculations, and the code wasn't organized. Because the hunk
calculations would happen in two separate places instead of just
`BufferDiff`. Finally, it always happened on the main thread because it
was during the `EditorElement` layout phase.

I used Zed's
[`diff_internal`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/02b2aa6c50c03d3005bec2effbc9f87161fbb1e8/crates/language/src/text_diff.rs#L230-L267)
as a starting place for word diff calculations because it uses
`Imara_diff` behind the scenes and already has language-specific
support.

#### Future Improvements

In the future, we could add `AST` based word diff highlights, e.g.
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/43691.

Release Notes:

- git: Show word diff highlight in expanded diff hunks with less than 5
lines.
- git: Add `word_diff_enabled` as a language setting that defaults to
true.

tidely c4105d055e Fix clippy::redundant_clone lint violations (#36558)
This removes around 900 unnecessary clones, ranging from cloning a few
ints all the way to large data structures and images.

A lot of these were fixed using `cargo clippy --fix --workspace
--all-targets`, however it often breaks other lints and needs to be run
again. This was then followed up with some manual fixing.

I understand this is a large diff, but all the changes are pretty
trivial. Rust is doing some heavy lifting here for us. Once I get it up
to speed with main, I'd appreciate this getting merged rather sooner
than later.

Oleksiy Syvokon 4e1c5ace85 agent: Improve Gemini support in the edit_file tool (#31116)
This change improves `eval_extract_handle_command_output` results for
all models:

Model | Pass rate before | Pass rate after
----------------------------|------------------|----------------
claude-3.7-sonnet | 0.96 | 0.98
gemini-2.5-pro | 0.35 | 0.86
gpt-4.1 | 0.81 | 1.00

Part of this improvement comes from more robust evaluation, which now
accepts multiple possible outcomes. Another part is from the prompt
adaptation: addressing common Gemini failure modes, adding a few-shot
example, and, in the final commit, auto-rewriting instructions for
clarity and conciseness.

This change still needs validation from larger end-to-end evals.

Max Brunsfeld ab974e5e22 Use line-based and word-based diff when reloading and formatting buffers (#25129)
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/10122
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/25034

When formatting buffers or reloading them after they change on disk, we
performed a diff between the buffer's current contents and the new
content. We need this diff in order preserve the positions of cursors
and other decorations when updating the buffer's text.

In order to handle changes within lines, we would previously compute a
*character-wise* diff. This was extremely expensive for large files.

This PR gets rid of the character-wise diff, and instead performs a
normal line-wise diff. Then, for certain replace hunks, we compute a
secondary word-based diff. Also, I've switched to the
[`imara-diff`](https://github.com/pascalkuthe/imara-diff) crate, instead
of `similar`.

Release Notes:

- Fixed a hang that could occur when large files were changed on disk or
formatted.
