Follow-up to the terminal permission params refactor, addressing
@benbrandt's [review
feedback](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/51782#pullrequestreview-2926899804)
about string formatting leaking into the UI layer.
## Changes
### Outcome construction moved to acp_thread
- Added `PermissionOptionChoice::build_outcome(is_allow)` — builds a
`SelectedPermissionOutcome` from a choice, attaching
`SelectedPermissionParams::Terminal` when the choice carries
`sub_patterns`.
- Added
`PermissionOptions::build_outcome_for_checked_patterns(checked_indices,
is_allow)` — handles the `DropdownWithPatterns` per-command checklist
flow, returning `None` when zero patterns are checked (degrading to
once).
The UI's `authorize_with_granularity` no longer does any
`format!("always_allow:{}",...)` string formatting or
`SelectedPermissionParams` construction.
### `option_kind` folded into `SelectedPermissionOutcome`
`SelectedPermissionOutcome` now carries `option_kind:
acp::PermissionOptionKind`, eliminating the separate parameter that was
threaded through the entire `authorize_tool_call` chain:
```
ThreadView::authorize_tool_call
→ Conversation::authorize_tool_call
→ AcpThread::authorize_tool_call
```
Every signature in this chain dropped one parameter.
### `SelectedPermissionParams` removed from UI imports
The type is now only referenced by `acp_thread` (construction) and
`agent` (consumption). The UI passes `SelectedPermissionOutcome`
opaquely.

## Context
If you went back and edited the first message, we were resetting the
provisional title, even though the title had previously already been set
from a summarization pass.
In order to achieve this, we moved the default thread title logic up the
UI layer, and allowed AcpThreads to have an optional title.

## Summary
Adds a new permission UI for terminal pipeline commands (e.g. `cargo
test | tail`) that lets users selectively always-allow individual
commands in the pipeline, rather than only offering a blanket
always-allow for the first command.

Harden the terminal tool's permission system to reject commands
containing shell substitutions and interpolations (`$VAR`, `${VAR}`,
`$(…)`, backticks, `$((…))`, `<(…)`, `>(…)`) before they reach terminal
creation.
## Changes
### Shell command parser (`shell_command_parser`)
- Added structured terminal command-prefix extraction with env-var
prefix support
- Added parser-backed validation that classifies commands as
Safe/Unsafe/Unknown
- Extended normalized command extraction to include scalar env-var
assignments in order
- Preserved quoted assignment values when they contain whitespace or
special characters
### Pattern extraction (`agent/pattern_extraction`)
- Updated terminal pattern extraction to use structured parser output
- Included env-var prefixes in generated allow patterns
- Normalized regex token boundaries to `\s+` while preserving display
whitespace
### Tool permissions (`agent/tool_permissions`)
- Added invalid-terminal-command rejection for forbidden
substitutions/interpolations
- Added unconditional allow-all bypass (global default Allow, or
terminal-specific Allow with empty patterns)
- Preserved hardcoded denial precedence over allow-all
### Terminal tool (`agent/tools/terminal_tool`)
- Updated tool description and input schema to explicitly prohibit shell
substitutions
- Added comprehensive SEC-264 regression test suite (20 new tests)
covering:
- All forbidden constructs (`${HOME}`, `$1`, `$?`, `$$`, `$@`,
`$(whoami)`, backticks, `$((1+1))`, `<(ls)`, `>(cat)`, env-prefix
variants, multiline, nested)
- Allow-all exception paths (global and terminal-specific)
- Hardcoded-denial precedence
- Env-prefix permission flow (matching, value mismatch rejection,
multiple assignments, quoted whitespace)
Closes SEC-264
Release Notes:
- Terminal tool permissions regexes can now match environment variables
(e.g. `FOO=bar cmd arg1 arg2`)
- If terminal tool permissions have active permissions regexes running
on them, then bare interpolations like `$FOO` are disallowed for
security, since regexes wouldn't be able to match on them.
This removes the assumption that one project <-> one native agent. The
native agent now maintains a project per session. We don't make use of
this right now, but it will come in handy once we start sharing ACP
connections globally.

Nightly only since no tool is using streaming on Preview.

When a completion request fails with a retryable error (e.g. a 500 from
the upstream provider), the retry loop waits on a timer before trying
again. This timer did not race with the cancellation signal, so if the
user switched models and submitted a new message during the retry delay,
the old turn would continue retrying with the stale model for up to 15
seconds — making requests to the wrong provider and corrupting the
thread's message list with spurious Resume entries.
Now the retry delay races with the cancellation receiver, so the old
turn exits immediately when cancelled.
Release Notes:
- Fixed cancelled turns in a conversation that failed (e.g. 500 from the
LLM provider) bein retried even after cancellation
This PR introduces a `ToolInput` struct which allows tools to receive

For the last few days, the model has never picked a good timeout value.

After looking around a bit, I felt like subagent wasn't the right way to
introduce this tool to the model. And with some back and forth
verification + market research, we both agreed spawn_agent was a better
name for what this tool is doing.
It still calls the right tool if you ask for a subagent, but especially
if we move these to be running in the background, spawn will be a better
name anyway.

limited the amount of structured data we could send the model.
Now tools can also return structured data in the error cases, which is
super helpful for subagents in particular

Looking at this more, the map of tools is just for what is available and
all of the filtering happens at runtime. So we can just rely on the
current behavior for the list of tools (it was already a matching set)
and we can simplify all of the code paths again where we were adding
this filtered list.
Release Notes:
- N/A
Removes tool filtering since this was throwing off certain models, and
also allows for more generic task prompts that don't always require
summaries. Since the models usually provide a wrap-up message, we don't
have to wait for another turn.
This also sets us up to allow the agent to re-interact with an existing
subagent thread.

Previously, clicking "Always allow for `cargo` commands" after running
`cargo build --release` would also silently permit `cargo run`
(arbitrary code execution), `cargo publish`, and any other cargo
subcommand. This was overly broad and did not match user intent.
Now the extracted pattern includes the subcommand when present, so the
button reads "Always allow for `cargo build` commands" and the pattern
`^cargo\s+build\b` only matches `cargo build` invocations — not `cargo
test`, `cargo run`, etc.
### How it works
- The second token is included in the pattern when it looks like a
subcommand (alphanumeric, hyphens, underscores, no leading `-`).
- When the second token is a flag (e.g. `ls -la`), only the command name
is used — the user sees "Always allow for `ls` commands".
- Single-word commands and path-like commands behave the same as before.
### Examples
| Command | Pattern | Button label |
|---|---|---|
| `cargo build --release` | `^cargo\s+build\b` | Always for `cargo
build` commands |
| `cargo test -p search` | `^cargo\s+test\b` | Always for `cargo test`
commands |
| `npm install` | `^npm\s+install\b` | Always for `npm install` commands
|
| `ls -la` | `^ls\b` | Always for `ls` commands |
| `ls` | `^ls\b` | Always for `ls` commands |
| `./script.sh` | *(rejected)* | *(no pattern button)* |
Release Notes:
- Agent: "Always allow" suggestions for terminal commands are now

instead of "Always allow for `cargo` commands").

It's possible that a given project/workspace has symlinks that go
outside the current directories. In order to alert the user of some
potential files the agent is accessing they may not be expecting, we ask
for permission first.
Release Notes:
- agent: Prompt for permission if the agent tries to access files whose
symlinks resolve outside the current workspace
Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where a request could fail if an MCP server with names
containing whitespace was used
## Summary
When multiple MCP servers expose tools with the same name, Zed
disambiguates them by prefixing the tool name with the server ID from
settings.json. If the server ID contains spaces or special characters
(e.g., `"Azure DevOps"`), the resulting tool name like `Azure
DevOps_echo` violates Anthropic's API pattern `^[a-zA-Z0-9_-]{1,128}$`,
causing API errors:
> "Received an error from the Anthropic API: tools.0.custom.name: String
should match pattern '^[a-zA-Z0-9_-]{1,128}$'"
## Solution
Convert server IDs to snake_case (using the `heck` crate already
available in the workspace) before using them as prefixes during tool
name disambiguation.
| Server ID in settings.json | Disambiguated Tool Name |
|---------------------------|------------------------|
| `"Azure DevOps"` | `azure_dev_ops_echo` |
| `"My MCP Server"` | `my_mcp_server_echo` |
## Test plan
- [x] Added test case for server name with spaces ("Azure DevOps") in
`test_mcp_tool_truncation`
- [x] Verified existing tests pass
- [x] Manually tested with two MCP servers having overlapping tool names

Closes AI-10
The thinking tool is no longer needed. This removes it from the agent
codebase and updates all tests to use other tools instead.
Release Notes:
- Removed the thinking tool from the Agent, as models now have their own
first-class thinking APIs.
MCP tool names can contain colons (e.g. `mcp:server:tool`), which broke
the `splitn(3, ':')` parsing of always-allow/always-deny pattern option
IDs. This switches to newline (`\n`) as the delimiter between tool name
and pattern, since newlines cannot appear in either component.
## Changes
- **Option ID format**: Changed from
`always_allow_pattern:{tool}:{pattern}` to
`always_allow_pattern:{tool}\n{pattern}`
- **Response parsing**: Replaced `splitn(3, ':')` with `strip_prefix` +
`split_once('\n')`
- **Error logging**: Added `log::error!` when pattern parsing fails
(previously silent)
- **Tests**: Updated test assertions in `agent` and `agent_ui` crates
No release notes because granular tool permissions are still
feature-flagged.
Release Notes:

This PR removes the `fn name()` default method from the `AgentTool`
trait (which just returned `Self::NAME`) and replaces all call sites
with direct use of the `NAME` associated constant. This lets us use it
as a single source of truth in macros that want to access it at compile
time.
This PR also replaces hardcoded tool name string literals throughout the
codebase with the corresponding `NAME` constants, so tool name
references stay in sync if a tool is renamed.
Intentionally not changed:
- **Display strings** like `"Thinking"` and `"Subagent"` (user-facing UI
labels)
- **Serde attributes** like `#[serde(rename = "thinking")]` (wire
format)
- **The test assertion** `assert_eq!(SubagentTool::NAME, "subagent")`
(replacing the literal would make it tautological)
- **MCP server names** like `"mcp:srv:terminal"` (not tool identifiers)
Release Notes:
- N/A
This change introduces hardcoded security rules for the terminal tool
that cannot be bypassed by any setting, including
`always_allow_tool_actions`.
## Currently Blocked Commands
- `rm -rf /` - Recursive deletion of root filesystem
- `rm -rf ~` - Recursive deletion of home directory
These rules are checked **before** the `always_allow_tool_actions`
global flag, ensuring they can never be bypassed. The rules also check
parsed sub-commands, so `ls && rm -rf /` is also blocked.
Release Notes:
- Certain known-bad tool uses are now automatically blocked, such as the
terminal tool attempting to run `rm -rf /` or `rm -rf ~`
Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/47330
This PR moves the queue logic out of the native Thread into the shared
UI layer (thread view) to enable it for external agents. There's a key
difference in behavior, though, between native and external agents:
queued messages in the former will be sent in the next turn boundary,
given we can easily tell this, whereas for the latter, queued messages
will be sent by the end of the generation. We'd need an ACP-level change
to provide exactly the same UX between both types of agents, and I
figured that's better to have _some_ version of the feature for external
agents as opposed to not having it all due to this difference.
Release Notes:
- Agent: Made the message queue feature available for external agents as
well.
## Problem
When subagents use the `edit_file` tool, it creates an `EditAgent` that
makes its own model request to get the edit instructions. These "nested"
requests compete with the parent subagent conversation requests for rate
limiter permits.
The rate limiter uses a semaphore with a limit of 4 concurrent requests
per model instance. When multiple subagents run in parallel:
1. 3 subagents each hold 1 permit for their ongoing conversation streams
(3 permits used)
2. When all 3 try to use `edit_file` simultaneously, their edit agents
need permits too
3. Only 1 edit agent can get the 4th permit; the other 2 block waiting
4. The blocked edit agents can't complete, so their parent subagent
conversations can't complete
5. The parent conversations hold their permits, so the blocked edit
agents stay blocked
6. **Deadlock**
## Solution
Added a `bypass_rate_limit` field to `LanguageModelRequest`. When set to
`true`, the request skips the rate limiter semaphore entirely. The
`EditAgent` sets this flag because its requests are already "part of" a
rate-limited parent request.
(No release notes because subagents are still feature-flagged.)

Follow-Up-For: #47243
Previously, we would detach tasks spawned to watch config files.
However, the task blocked on receiving a file event before checking if
the receiver for the updates channel was dropped, causing the task to
never exit. The fix here was to return the task explicitly, so that it
can be dropped instead of calling `.detach()` on it. There is definitely
a way to `select!` between the receiver being dropped and the next file
system event, but I couldn't figure it out in a reasonable amount of
time and decided it wasn't worth it.
Release Notes:
- Fixed an issue where a few file descriptors would be leaked each time
a project was closed
This makes sure all of the new granular permission logic and ui only
applies to the zed agent and doesn't affect the UI of external agents.
