# Objective
Delay picker refreshes for entry updates so bursty filesystem events
trigger only one search refresh, while still refreshing immediately when
worktrees are added or removed.
Update tests to advance both the watch latency and refresh debounce, and
add coverage for coalesced worktree updates.

This PR reworks how multi-select mode is rendered in pickers (only used
by the file finder and text finder).
The "Multi Select" entry previously lived inside the footer's Actions
menu, which was hard to discover and its toggle checkmark misaligned the
menu's keybinding column. This PR changes to an icon button at the
far-roght edge of the search editor, with a tooltip showing the
keybinding to toggle it.
Also made each list item use the actual Checkbox component instead of a
bespoke re-implementation of it. And in doing so, added a few design
improvements to the list item so that it received the checkbox while
preserving proper styles for each interaction state, as well as
displaying the keybinding to select the item or check the item.
Here's a quick video, showing these changes off:

Release Notes:
- Improved multi-select in the file finder and text finder: the toggle
now lives in the search bar with a `cmd-shift-s` keybinding, and
selection checkboxes render inside list items.
Users can now Cmd+click multiple files in the file picker and press
Enter to open them all at once. Tab can also be used to select items
without clicking, advancing the cursor automatically.
# Objective
Currently, when opening the file picker (Cmd+P), users can only open one
file at a time. This adds multi-select support so users can select
multiple files and open them all at once.
Fixes#59818
## Solution
Added a `selected_indices` set to `Picker` to track which items the user
has toggled into a multi-selection. Regular clicks still open a file
immediately (unchanged behavior).
Cmd+clicking adds a file to the selection without opening it, and
pressing Enter opens all selected files at once. A `confirm_multi`
method was added to the delegate trait so individual delegates (like the
file finder) can handle opening multiple files with a safe fallback for
delegates that don't support it. Multi-selection is cleared when the
picker
is dismissed or the search query changes. Selected items show a
background highlight and a focused left border so the user always knows
what's selected.
## How to use it
1. Open the file or test picker.
2. Search and either Cmd+click or tab it to add it to the selection (the
file will not open yet).
3. Repeat for any other files you want to open.
4. To deselect a file, Cmd+click it again.
5. Alternatively, hover over an item and press Tab to select it with the
keyboard, the cursor automatically moves to the next item so you can
keep selecting quickly.
6. Once you have all the files you want, press Enter to open them all at
once.
## Testing
Tested manually on macOS.
- **Single select:** Clicking on a file opens it directly, which is the
existing behavior and remains unchanged.
- **Multi-select via Cmd+Click:** Holding Cmd and clicking multiple
items adds them to the selection. Cmd+clicking an already-selected item
deselects it. Pressing Enter opens all selected files at once.
- **Multi-select via Tab:** Hovering over an item and pressing Tab
selects it without clicking or opening it, allowing keyboard-driven
multi-selection.

The fight against entropy continues...
Release Notes:
- N/A or Added/Fixed/Improved ...
The recent "pickers with previews" overhaul left the picker
sizing/presentation API spread across several overlapping knobs that
every call site had to set correctly — and many didn't, causing pickers
across the app to render at the wrong width, lose their container, or
stop dismissing. This PR consolidates that surface into a small,
hard-to-misuse API and makes correct sizing the default.
Net effect: a plain `Picker::uniform_list(delegate, …)` now renders
correctly out of the box (standard width, standard max-height, shrinks
to fit, dismisses properly), and the ~35 call sites only specify what
genuinely differs.
## API changes
**Presentation** — three overlapping booleans (`is_modal`, `is_popover`,
`is_resizable`) collapsed into one enum, with resizability living inside
the only variant where it's meaningful:
```rust
enum Presentation {
Modal { resizable: bool }, // own chrome, dismisses on blur, optionally resizable
Popover, // own chrome, dismisses on blur, never resizable
Embedded, // host container owns chrome + dismissal
}
```
- `modal(bool)` is **removed** in favor of explicit, self-documenting
builders:
- *(default)* → `Modal` (resizable iff it has a preview)
- `.popover()` → `Popover` (menu-attached surfaces)
- `.embedded()` → `Embedded` (pickers nested in a larger modal/view)
- Dynamic callers use `.when(cond, Picker::embedded)` (added `impl
FluentBuilder for Picker`).
**Sizing** — preview-vs-not now drives everything; the manual padding
knob is gone:
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| `vertical_padding` field + `no_vertical_padding()` | removed — derived
from whether a preview is visible |
| `height(...)` (ambiguous: fixed vs max) | `max_height(...)` (plain
pickers shrink-to-fit, capped here) |
| `minimum_results_width(...)` | removed — a plain picker's min width
tracks its opening width; preview pickers use standard internal pane
mins |
| default size = 60% viewport | default = `DEFAULT_MODAL_WIDTH` (34rem)
× `DEFAULT_MODAL_MAX_HEIGHT` (24rem, max) |
| resize handles gated on `is_modal` | gated on `is_resizable` (new
`resizable(bool)` builder; auto-`true` for preview pickers) |
Call sites now only override the exceptions: narrow popover selectors
(`initial_width`), the taller outline view (`max_height`), and preview
pickers (constructed via `*_with_preview`).
## Behavior fixes
- **Wrong widths everywhere**: pickers were falling back to
60%-of-viewport because the original migration set
`minimum_results_width` but never `initial_width`. Fixed at the source
via the new defaults.
- **Popovers had no container and wouldn't dismiss**: `is_modal=false`
was suppressing both the elevated background *and* blur-dismiss. Split
out so popovers keep their chrome and dismiss on click-away/escape. This
fixed the agent-panel model/profile selectors, sidebar recent projects,
and the settings theme/font/icon/ollama pickers (which were incorrectly
using `modal(false)`).
- **Sidebar recent projects stretched to full height**: was missing the
shrink-to-fit behavior; now capped and content-sized like other
popovers.
- **Preview crash**: removed an over-strict `debug_assert!` that
panicked when previewing an empty file (`message == None && editor
empty` is valid).
- **Preview-aware default size**: pickers open at standard width with
the preview hidden, and expand to the larger "telescope" size when a
preview is shown. Fixes the text finder rendering super-wide by default,
and makes the file finder expand (rather than cram its results) when you
toggle the preview.

# Objective
- Fixes#59643.
## Problems
- Initial and minimum width was not migrated for all pickers.
- Some pickers had their width still determined by their wrapper.
- Some pickers where not modals but did not have modal false set.
## Solution
- Migrate the pickers we missed.
- Remove the width being set on the div's wrapping the pickers.
- Set modal false on the missed pickers.

Overhauls Zed's pickers to make them resizable and give them a preview.
Closes#8279
### Background
The most requested Zed feature has the last year has been a [Telescope
like search box](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/8279)
[discussion](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/discussions/22581).
To understand why this is so popular we need to understand search can
serve thee goals:
- Navigation: fuzzy search is faster & easier then clicking in a file
tree
- Exploration: example, find a function by a word in its doc comment
- Collecting: example, getting a list of functions to change
The project search which shows results in a multibuffer is the perfect
way to operate on a list of items. Navigation and Exploration need a lot
of context around each result and offer fast navigation between them.
For both of these live searching is also critical.
The `telescope UI` is a picker with a preview to the right or below.
It's offered in various editors and IDE's most famously Neovim (through
the Telescope plugin), IntelliJ (natively), Helix (natively) and of
course VScode (plugins) and it's _many_ forks.
While having a UI like that for text search (our project search) is most
requested the UX pattern is applied widely, from `find_all_references`
to `bookmarks`. It enhances most pickers. Note that we have over 50
different picker modals!
The community has tried to build something like this for Zed:
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/44530
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/45307
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/43790
These all became huge PR's that we could not merge for various reasons.
This is a really hard feature to integrate in Zed!
This PR got started as https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46478
and supercedes that.
### Design
- Extend pickers to support an optional preview with minimal changes to
the pickers themselves.
- Make pickers resizable.
- Complement the existing search do not replace it by having both UI's
share the underlying search and allow freely switching between them.
- Allow extending the preview to things other then files.
- Maintain a clean design on all the pickers.
### Heigh level Implementation overview
- Adds an `Option<Preview>` to `Picker`
- Gives `PickerDelegate` a method to communicate a preview to the Picker
- Overhaul the way pickers are drawn to allow for resizing them.
Implemented on the `Shape` and `SizeBouds` structs.
- Adds a high level way to draw the `footer` and `editor` so we do not
need to change much to the pickers.
- Adds a new text finder Picker
- Adds a way to take a running search from project search and hand it to
the text finder Picker and the other way round
- Give the file finder a preview
### Next steps
A more detailed list and how to help out will be added to the tracking
issue for [Pickes with
previews](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/56037)
- Add more previews to more pickers!
- Enable selectioning multiple items in pickers and performing actions
on those
- Open selected items in a multibuffer
- Add a way to restore the last picker
- Make popovers (picker attached to some menu) resizable as well

## Context
This follow-up was inspired by Christopher’s suggestion in the review
comment on #58483: long filenames should truncate in the middle so both
the beginning and the suffix/extension remain visible.
Previously, very long filenames in picker rows could still be clipped or
end-truncated, making files with shared prefixes hard to distinguish.
This adds middle-truncation support to GPUI text overflow and applies it
to filename-focused picker surfaces: the tab switcher and the Ctrl-P
file finder. Normal editor tab bar behavior remains unchanged and
continues to use the existing title length cap.
## How to Review
- **`crates/gpui/src/style.rs`, `crates/gpui/src/styled.rs`,
`crates/gpui/src/elements/text.rs`,
`crates/gpui/src/text_system/line_wrapper.rs`**: Adds
`TextOverflow::TruncateMiddle`, wires it through text layout, and
implements middle truncation while preserving valid text runs. Very
narrow widths now show the truncation affix instead of falling back to
the abruptly clipped original text.
- **`crates/ui/src/components/label/label_like.rs`,
`crates/ui/src/components/label/label.rs`,
`crates/ui/src/components/label/highlighted_label.rs`**: Exposes middle
truncation through the shared label components.
- **`crates/workspace/src/item.rs`, `crates/editor/src/items.rs`,
`crates/workspace/src/pane.rs`,
`crates/tab_switcher/src/tab_switcher.rs`**: Adds an explicit
tab-content opt-in for middle truncation. The tab switcher enables it,
while the normal tab bar and dragged tabs keep their existing behavior.
- **`crates/file_finder/src/file_finder.rs`**: Applies middle truncation
to Ctrl-P file finder filenames and lets the path shrink from the start
so long paths do not hide important filename suffixes.

Release Notes:
- Improved long filename truncation in the tab switcher and file finder
so extensions remain visible.
## Context
When a file is opened outside any project, Zed creates a single-file
worktree for it where the file's relative path is `""` (the worktree
root IS the file). Typing to filter in the file picker (Ctrl-P) caused a
crash: `Error: opening project path
"/home/user/foo.txt/foo.txt"`.
Two bugs combined to produce this:
1. **History lookup mismatch** : `fuzzy_nucleo` detects `root_is_file =
true` for single-file worktrees and moves the worktree root name into
`path_match.path` (so `"" → "foo.txt"`). `matching_history_items` stored
the entry under key `""`but looked it up by `"foo.txt"` → miss → item
dropped from history matches.
2. **Search confirm duplication** : because the history match was
dropped, the file appeared as `Match::Search` with `path_match.path =
"foo.txt"`. Confirming the constructed `ProjectPath { path: "foo.txt" }`
inside a worktree rooted at `/home/user/foo.txt` → resolved to
`/home/user/foo.txt/foo.txt`.
Fix 1 adds a fallback empty-path lookup in `matching_history_items` so
single-file worktree entries are found correctly and deduplication
suppresses the search duplicate. Fix 2 is defense-in-depth: if a
single-file worktree file ever reaches
the `Match::Search` confirm handler, it detects `is_single_file()` and
uses an empty path instead.
**Edit :**
After further work, two additional edge cases were fixed:
- `Match::Search` split-open handling now uses the same single-file
worktree path normalization as normal confirm. This prevents
split-opening a single-file worktree search result from resolving
`notes.txt` inside `/path/to/notes.txt` as
`/path/to/notes.txt/notes.txt`.
- History matching now still includes root names for single-file
worktrees when `project_panel.hide_root = true`. Normal folder worktree
roots remain hidden in this mode, but single-file worktrees need their
root name included because the root name is the filename users type into
the picker.
Additional test coverage:
- Added `test_non_project_file_matches_history_with_hidden_root` for the
`hide_root=true` history matching edge case.
- Added `test_single_file_search_result_split_open` for split-opening a
single-file worktree search result.
Closes#54934
Manual test after fix below :

23-58-00.webm](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/3de564d8-cc94-4624-98e3-54dd124bfa2f)
## How to Review
- `crates/file_finder/src/file_finder.rs` : Two targeted changes:
- `matching_history_items` (~line 757): added `.or_else` fallback that
retries the candidates lookup with an empty path when the first lookup
misses, covering the `root_is_file` key mismatch for single-file
worktrees.
- `Match::Search` confirm handler (~line 1640): checks
`wt.read(cx).is_single_file()` and substitutes `RelPath::empty()` for
`path_match.path` to prevent duplication.
- `crates/file_finder/src/file_finder_tests.rs` — Two test changes:
- New test `test_non_project_file_open_with_filter`: opens a file
outside the project, filters for it by name, confirms, and asserts the
correct path is opened.
- Updated `test_search_results_refreshed_on_standalone_file_creation`:
the fix correctly promotes single-file worktree files to
`Match::History`, which activates `skip_focus_for_active_in_search` when
the file is currently open. The test now asserts the match type directly
and closes the picker with `menu::Cancel` instead of confirming.

Closes#4864
Adds a `file_finder::OpenWithoutDismiss` action that opens the selected
file without closing the finder, so multiple files can be opened in one
session. Pressing right arrow when the cursor is at the end of the
search query triggers it — matching VS Code and Sublime Text behaviour.
A "Keep Open" button in the footer provides mouse access and serves as a
discoverability hint.
Each opened file becomes the active tab without stealing keyboard focus
from the finder, preserving the search state between opens. Refactors
the existing `confirm` implementation into a shared `open_selected_file`
helper parameterised by `dismiss_after_open` to eliminate duplicated
file-opening logic.
## What's different from PR #38914
- Uses `right` arrow at `end_of_input` context instead of
`cmd-shift-enter` (better ergonomics, matches VS Code/Sublime — the
`end_of_input` context that was added after that PR makes this possible)
- Each opened file is activated as the current tab (`activate: true`,
`focus_item: false`), giving visual feedback on every open without
stealing focus from the modal
- Cleaner refactor: single `open_selected_file` helper instead of
duplicated logic

I'll read with joy and popcorn through that root cause analysis.
It makes literally zero sense what happened here, but for some completly
bonkers reason GitHub completely messed up the merge queue with

I have no idea how it happened. It makes literally zero sense. A PR
going into the merge queue should have the same LoC when getting out of

Closes#43329
## Summary
This fixes `path:line:column` navigation for files containing non-ASCII
text.
Before this change, open path flows were passing the external column
directly into `go_to_singleton_buffer_point`. That happened to work for
ASCII, but it was wrong for Unicode because external columns are
user-visible character positions while the editor buffer stores columns
as UTF-8 byte offsets.
This PR adds a shared text layer conversion for external row/column
coordinates and uses it in the affected open-path flows:
- file finder navigation
- recent project remote connection navigation
- recent project remote server navigation
It also adds regression coverage for the Unicode case that originally
failed.
As a small - necessary - prerequisite, this also adds
`remote_connection` test support to `file_finder`'s dev-deps so the
local regression test can build and run on this branch. That follows the
same feature mismatch pattern previously fixed in #48280. I wasn't able
to locally verify the tests/etc. w/o the addition... so I've rolled it
into this PR. Tests are green.
The earlier attempt in #47093 was headed in the right direction, but it
did not land and did not include the final regression coverage requested
in review.
## Verification
- `cargo fmt --all -- --check`

- `./script/clippy -p file_finder`
- `./script/clippy -p recent_projects`
- `cargo test -p file_finder --lib --no-run`
- `cargo test -p file_finder
file_finder_tests::test_row_column_numbers_query_inside_file -- --exact`
- `cargo test -p file_finder
file_finder_tests::test_row_column_numbers_query_inside_unicode_file --
--exact`
- `cargo test -p text
tests::test_point_for_row_and_column_from_external_source -- --exact`
## Manual
I reproduced locally on my machine (macOS) w/ a stateless launch using a
Unicode file (Cyrillic)
Before:
- `:1:5` landed too far left
- `:1:10` landed around the 4th visible Cyrillic character
After:
- `:1:5` lands after 4 visible characters / before the 5th
- `:1:10` lands after 9 visible characters / before the 10th
Release Notes:
- Fixed `path:line:column` navigation so non-ASCII columns land on the
correct character.

Closes#45135
Since neither the project search nor file finder search was showing
project's root name, including it in the history was unnecessary,
especially when the user had `project_panel.hide_root` set to `true`.
Release Notes:
- Made file finder to respect `project_panel.hide_root` settings

## Summary
Creating a new file via the file picker incorrectly used the focused
file's directory as the target even when that file did not belong to any
open worktree (e.g., Zed opened to a single file, settings.json focused
without a worktree, or an external file focused). This PR changes the
selection logic so the picker only uses the focused file's worktree if
that file actually belongs to one of the visible project worktrees;
otherwise, it falls back to the existing project heuristic (query-root
match or project default), which prevents misdirected file creation.
This addresses
[zed-industries/zed#41940](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/41940).
---
## Problem
### Scenarios that errored or created in the wrong place:
1. **Zed opened to a single file from the CLI** (no worktree)
- Create New was offered and then failed or targeted a non-project
directory
2. **No worktree open with settings.json focused**
- Same failure mode as above
3. **A worktree is open but settings.json is focused**
- Create New used settings.json's directory
4. **A worktree is open but an external (non-worktree) file is focused**
- Create New used the external file's directory
### Root Cause
`set_search_matches` unconditionally overwrote `expect_worktree` using
the `currently_opened_path` worktree_id, even if the focused file was
not part of any visible worktree.
---
## Fix
### Query-derived worktree remains primary:
- Try to match the query path against the roots of visible worktrees
- If it matches, use that worktree and strip the root prefix from the
query to get the relative path
### Only use the focused file as a secondary signal if it is relevant:
- Check whether the focused file's `worktree_id` exists within visible
worktrees
- Only then override `expect_worktree`
If no worktree is determined (e.g., no worktrees are open), Create New
is not offered.
---
## Implementation Details
- **Iterate over `&available_worktree`** when scanning roots and clone
the matched entity to avoid moving out of the iterator
- **Validate focused file worktree membership:**
- Compute `focused_file_in_available_worktree` by scanning visible
worktrees for a matching id
- Override `expect_worktree` only if that check passes
- **Preserve existing guard rails for Create New:**
- Only push `Match::CreateNew` when a concrete `expect_worktree` is
present and the query doesn't end with a trailing separator
---
## Key Code Changes
### Before
Always overwrote `expect_worktree` with the focused file's
`worktree_id`, even for external or non-project files.
### After
Only override `expect_worktree` when the focused file belongs to a
visible worktree. Otherwise, keep the query-derived or default project
worktree.
---
## User-Facing Behavior
### No Worktree Open
*Example: Zed launched with a single file or only settings.json visible*
- The file picker will **not** offer "Create New"
### Worktree Open + Non-Project File Focused
*Example: A non-project file or settings.json is in focus*
- "Create New" is offered
- New file is created within the project worktree (based on root match
or project default)
- New file is **never** created beside the external file
### Multiple Worktrees Open + Query Rooted to One
*Example: Query specifies a particular worktree root*
- The worktree is selected by root-name match
- Project default selection applies if no match is found
---
## Tests
### Added:
`test_create_file_focused_file_not_belong_to_available_worktrees`
1. Set up two worktrees A and B; open an external file that belongs to
neither
2. Use the file picker to create "new-file.txt"
3. Assert the new file opens in an editor whose
`ProjectPath.worktree_id` equals either A or B, and the relative path is
"new-file.txt"
Existing tests for Create New, absolute/relative matching, and
multi-worktree behavior continue to pass.
---
## Reproduction Steps (Pre-Fix)
1. Launch Zed with a single file:
```bash
zed /tmp/foo.txt
```
Or open settings.json with no project
2. Open the file finder and type a new filename, then press Enter
3. Observe Create New trying to use the focused file's directory or
failing unexpectedly
---
## Expected vs Actual
### Expected:
- No Create New when there is no project worktree
- When a project exists, Create New targets the appropriate worktree,
not the focused external file's directory
### Actual (pre-fix):
- Create New used the focused file's directory, even if it was external
or unrelated to the project
---
## Migration and Compatibility
- No user configuration changes required
- Behavior now aligns with user expectation: Create New is only offered
when a project worktree is available and it always targets a project
worktree
---

## Appendix: Code Snippets
### Guard before overriding with focused file:
```rust
let focused_file_in_available_worktree = available_worktree.iter().any(|wt| wt.read(cx).id() == worktree_id);
if focused_file_in_available_worktree {
expect_worktree = project.worktree_for_id(worktree_id, cx);
}
```
### Root-based worktree selection with non-moving iteration:
```rust
for worktree in &available_worktree {
if query_path.strip_prefix(worktree.read(cx).root_name()).is_ok() {
expect_worktree = Some(worktree.clone());
…
}
}
```
---
This PR includes a targeted test ensuring that when the focused file is
outside all worktrees, Create New still creates within the project
worktree(s), preventing regressions.

Draft as a base for continuing the discussion in #8008 : adds a
`SplitOperation` enum to support bindings like `["pane::SplitLeft",
{"operation": "Clear"}]`
To be discussed @MrSubidubi and others:
- Naming: Generally not happy with names yet and specifically `Empty` is
unclear, e.g., what does this mean for terminal panes? Added placeholder
code to split without cloning, but unsure what users would expect in
this case.
- ~~I removed `SplitAndMoveXyz` actions but I guess we should keep them
for backwards compatibility?~~
- May have missed details in the move implementation. Will check the
code again for opportunities to refactor more code after we agree on the
approach.
- ~~Tests should go to `crates/collab/src/tests/integration_tests.rs`?~~
Closes#8008
Release Notes:
- Add `pane::Split` mode (`{ClonePane,EmptyPane,MovePane}`) to allow
creating an empty buffer.

Closes #ISSUE
Problem:
- The status bar’s pending keystroke indicator (shown next to --NORMAL--
in Vim mode) didn’t clear when focus moved to another context, e.g.
hitting g in the editor then clicking the Git panel. The keymap state
correctly canceled the prefix, but observers that render the indicator
never received a “pending input changed” notification, so the UI kept
showing stale prefixes until a new keystroke occurred.
Fix:
- The change introduces a `pending_input_changed_queued` flag and a new
helper `notify_pending_input_if_needed` which will flushes the queued
notification as soon as we have an App context. The
`pending_input_changed` now resets the flag after notifying subscribers.

We were using `std::path::Path::strip_prefix` to determine which
