Cole Miller 8aca6b1eda Remove gpui's dependency on async-process (#59358)
This removes gpui's dependency on the `util` crate, which depends on
async process. It now depends on `gpui_util` only, and uses
`std::process::Command` for the two cases where it was previously using
an async `Command`. This lifts the requirement of non-Zed consumers of
gpui to depend on our forked async-process (see #59156).

Richard Feldman 65a210b7bc gpui_tokio: Use shutdown_background to avoid WASI panic on exit (#53904)
When the Tokio runtime is dropped during Zed shutdown, it drives all
spawned tasks to cancellation by polling them one last time. The
`wasmtime-wasi` crate wraps child task `JoinHandle`s in an
`AbortOnDropJoinHandle` whose `Future::poll` calls `.expect("child task
panicked")` on the join result — but Tokio can also return
`JoinError::Cancelled` (not just panics), causing the expect to panic
with:

```
child task panicked: JoinError::Cancelled(Id(45))
```

This showed up as Sentry issue ZED-69A (106 events, 85 users, 100%
Windows, stable channel).

The fix is to explicitly call `shutdown_background()` on the owned Tokio
runtime during `GlobalTokio::drop`, which immediately drops all spawned
tasks without polling them again, avoiding the wasmtime-wasi panic path
entirely.

Release Notes:

- Fixed a crash on exit caused by the Tokio runtime shutdown triggering
a panic in extension WASI tasks (Windows).

William Whittaker ebfae159be Allow external handles to be provided to gpui_tokio (#42795)
This PR allows for a handle to an existing Tokio runtime to be passed to
gpui_tokio's initialization function, which means that Tokio runtimes
created externally can be used.

Mikayla suggested that the function simply take the runtime from
whatever context the initialization function is called from but I think
there could reasonably be situations where that isn't the case and this
shouldn't have a meaningful impact to code complexity. If you want to
use the current context's runtime you can just do
`gpui_tokio::init_from_handle(cx, Handle::current());`.

This doesn't have an impact on the current users of the crate - the
existing `init()` function is functionally unchanged.

Lukas Wirth 06a733bd41 workspace: Handle non-cloneable items better (#41215)
When trying to split and clone a non clone-able workspace item we now
attempt split and move instead of doing nothing. Additionally we disable
the split menu buttons if we can't split the active item at all.

Release Notes:

- Improved handling of unsplittable panes

Julia Ryan 5a5b5ae2bb Remove workspace-hack (#40216)
We've been considering removing workspace-hack for a couple reasons:
- Lukas ran into a situation where its build script seemed to be causing
spurious rebuilds. This seems more likely to be a cargo bug than an
issue with workspace-hack itself (given that it has an empty build
script), but we don't necessarily want to take the time to hunt that
down right now.
- Marshall mentioned hakari interacts poorly with automated crate
updates (in our case provided by rennovate) because you'd need to have
`cargo hakari generate && cargo hakari manage-deps` after their changes
and we prefer to not have actions that make commits.

Currently removing workspace-hack causes our workspace to grow from
~1700 to ~2000 crates being built (depending on platform), which is
mainly a problem when you're building the whole workspace or running
tests across the the normal and remote binaries (which is where
feature-unification nets us the most sharing). It doesn't impact
incremental times noticeably when you're just iterating on `-p zed`, and
we'll hopefully get these savings back in the future when
rust-lang/cargo#14774 (which re-implements the functionality of hakari)
is finished.

e320118f15 Use Tokio::spawn instead of getting an executor handle (#36701)
This was causing panics due to the handles being dropped out of order.
It doesn't seem possible to guarantee the correct drop ordering given
that we're holding them over await points, so lets just spawn on the
tokio executor itself which gives us access to the state we needed those
handles for in the first place.

ec4babbf14 Add workspace-hack (#27277)
This adds a "workspace-hack" crate, see
[mozilla's](https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/3a265fdc9f33e5946f0ca0a04af73acd7e6d1a39/build/workspace-hack/Cargo.toml#l7)
for a concise explanation of why this is useful. For us in practice this
means that if I were to run all the tests (`cargo nextest r
--workspace`) and then `cargo r`, all the deps from the previous cargo
command will be reused. Before this PR it would rebuild many deps due to
resolving different sets of features for them. For me this frequently
caused long rebuilds when things "should" already be cached.

To avoid manually maintaining our workspace-hack crate, we will use
[cargo hakari](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari) to update the build files
when there's a necessary change. I've added a step to CI that checks
whether the workspace-hack crate is up to date, and instructs you to
re-run `script/update-workspace-hack` when it fails.

Finally, to make sure that people can still depend on crates in our
workspace without pulling in all the workspace deps, we use a `[patch]`
section following [hakari's
instructions](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari/0.9.36/cargo_hakari/patch_directive/index.html)

One possible followup task would be making guppy use our
`rust-toolchain.toml` instead of having to duplicate that list in its
config, I opened an issue for that upstream: guppy-rs/guppy#481.

TODO:
- [x] Fix the extension test failure
- [x] Ensure the dev dependencies aren't being unified by Hakari into
the main dependencies
- [x] Ensure that the remote-server binary continues to not depend on
LibSSL

Mikayla Maki 1e3d009094 Add a crate for spawning tokio tasks in Zed (#23857)
Part of https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/21092

As we're already depending on and using `tokio` to run `reqwest`, I've
added a crate to make running tokio futures more convenient. This should
unblock the Bedrock Cloud Model provider PR.

Note that since the `gpui_tokio` code is nearly trivial glue and I
expect that it will be useful for the nascent GPUI ecosystem, I've
elected to license it under Apache 2, like GPUI itself, instead of our
normal GPL license for Zed code.
