Lee ByeongJunanddino 32adc59cb7 Surround selection with backticks in Rust, C, and C++ comments (#58674)
Typing a backtick over selected text in Rust, C, and C++ comments
replaced the selection instead of wrapping it. Markdown already supports
this via its backtick bracket pair.

Add a backtick bracket pair for these languages:
  - `surround = true` wraps selections in backticks
  - `close = false` avoids auto-closing lone backticks
  - `not_in = ["string"]` enables it in comments but not strings

Finn Eitreim ced39bbd9f markdown: Fix inline HTML block highlighting (#61212)
# Objective

Fixes #59304

Right now inline html tags don't render with any kind of highlighting,
despite the fact that non-inline html tags do get highlighting.

## Solution

Right now zed already has tree-sitter rules that identifies the inline
blocks so we can add a new tree-sitter grammar rule,
```
((html_tag) @injection.content
  (#set! injection.language "html")
  (#set! injection.combined))
```
that passes these blocks to the html language server.

## Testing

I did some manual testing:

https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/92e5b322-bbc1-48c3-a615-0d32acc2e7d6

And also added a test:

Apoorva Verma 5f28f58f9f Indent statements under C/C++ case labels (#60758)
# Objective

Fixes #60261

Nothing under a `case` gets indented in C or C++, and the next `case`
doesn't come back out. It stays flat until you hit `editor: format`.

## Solution

The indent queries had no rule for case labels. Added the same pair
`cpp/indents.scm` uses for `access_specifier`: open an indent range at
the label, close it at the switch's `}`, outdent on the next label.

The part that got me: `@start` uses the *end* of the node you capture.
Fine for `access_specifier`, which is just `public:`. But a
`case_statement` swallows the statements under it, so capturing the node
starts the range after the last one. Capture the `:` instead. `default:`
is a `case_statement` too, so it comes along free.

Only affects what happens after a label, so existing `case` alignment
doesn't move.

## Testing

`test_c_autoindent_switch_case` and `test_cpp_autoindent_switch_case`
cover a plain case, fall-through labels and `default`. Both fail on
main. The `access_specifier` tests still pass.

Not mine, but worth knowing: `typescript::tests::test_outline` and
`test_generator_function_outline` are flaky on main, failing about half
my full `cargo test -p languages --lib` runs with or without this
change.

feeiyu 269e1c3fd5 Improve JS/TS/TSX parameter highlighting for destructuring (#60767)
# Objective

Fixes #51967

Destructured JS/TS/TSX parameters with defaults were not highlighted
consistently as parameters when using themes that distinguish arguments
from variables/properties, such as Catppuccin.

For example, in:

```js
function a({ argument = true }) {}
```

`argument` was parsed under a default assignment pattern and did not
receive the same `@variable.parameter` capture as a destructured
parameter without a default.

This also affected array binding patterns with defaults, such as:

```js
function b([argument = true]) {}
```

## Solution

Updated the JS/TS/TSX highlight queries to capture destructured
parameters with default values as `@variable.parameter`.

This covers both:

- Object binding patterns with defaults, such as `{ argument = true }`
- Array binding patterns with defaults, such as `[argument = true]`

As a result, destructured parameters are highlighted consistently
whether or not they provide a default value.

## Testing

- Verified the highlight query changes for JavaScript/TypeScript
destructured parameters with defaults.
- Tested examples include:
    ```js
    function a({ argument }) {}
    function a({ argument = true }) {}
    function a({ argument = true }?) {} //optional
    function b([argument]) {}
    function b([argument = true]) {}
    function b([argument = true]?) {} // optional
    ```
- These cases should be easiest to visually confirm with a theme that
distinguishes parameters from variables/properties, such as Catppuccin.

Sergey Borovikov ffaa1b9379 javascript, typescript: Inject GLSL and WGSL syntax in comment-labeled template literals (#55341)
Extends the existing ECMAScript comment-label injection system to
support GLSL and WGSL shader languages inside JS/TS strings and template
literals.

The pattern `/* language */` before a string is already used for `html`,
`sql`, `graphql`, and `css`. This adds the same support for two shader
languages commonly embedded as strings in WebGL/WebGPU code:

before:

Syntax highlighting activates when the corresponding extension is
installed:
- GLSL: the built-in `glsl` extension
- WGSL: the community extension
[`wgsl-wesl-zed`](https://github.com/lucascompython/wgsl-wesl-zed)
(language name `WGSL/WESL`)

Both `/*glsl*/` and `/* glsl */` forms are accepted (same behavior as
the existing patterns).

Xin Zhao d2e52d12e1 grammars: Add semantic token rule for Python constants (#59811)
# Objective

In Python, using variables in all uppercase letters signals that the
variable is a constant. In Zed's built-in Python grammar, this
convention is respected. Similarly, the `ty` language server has a rule
for this:

https://github.com/astral-sh/ruff/blob/e39ded7e89f503d892217364f924b38362fb9a66/crates/ty_ide/src/semantic_tokens.rs#L264-L267

https://github.com/astral-sh/ruff/blob/e39ded7e89f503d892217364f924b38362fb9a66/crates/ty_ide/src/semantic_tokens.rs#L356-L358

It returns a `"readonly"` token modifier if an item is determined to be
a constant. However, this specific modifier is not currently respected
in Zed. Consequently, when using `ty` as the language server (which is
expected to be a common setup in the near future, similar to `ruff` and
`uv`), and enable semantic token highlighting, these constants are
highlighted as normal variables.

## Solution

- Added a new semantic token rule in
`crates/grammars/src/python/semantic_token_rules.json` to provide
highlighting for constants.

## Testing

- This change primarily affects the UI and has been tested locally. A
before-and-after comparison is provided below in the Showcase section.

In the current Python Tree-sitter `highlights.scm`, splat parameters
(e.g., `*args`, `**kwargs`) and typed splat parameters are not
highlighted as `@variable.parameter` due to missing patterns.

This PR adds `list_splat_pattern` and `dictionary_splat_pattern` to the
function parameter rules so splat parameters are correctly colored.

This PR updates the Python built-in functions and types in Zed's syntax
highlighting query to align with the official Python 3.15 documentation.
It also backports a few missing built-ins from earlier Python versions.

**Things added**:
- Added the newly introduced
[`sentinel`](https://docs.python.org/3.15/whatsnew/3.15.html#whatsnew315-sentinel)
built-in function.
- Added the new
[`frozendict`](https://docs.python.org/3.15/whatsnew/3.15.html#whatsnew315-frozendict)
built-in type.
- Added `aiter` and `anext` (originally introduced in Python 3.10) to
ensure the built-ins list is complete.

With this change, Zed's built-in function list is now fully aligned with
the latest [Built-in functions in
Python](https://docs.python.org/3.15/library/functions.html).

To note, Python 3.15 introduces a new [`lazy`
keyword](https://docs.python.org/3.15/whatsnew/3.15.html#whatsnew315-lazy-imports)
for explicit lazy imports. Fully supporting this requires upstream
changes in `tree-sitter-python` (tracked in
tree-sitter/tree-sitter-python#336). Therefore, support for the `lazy`
keyword is not included in this PR.

saberoueslati e1961c6691 Fix json! empty-string highlighting in Rust (#55126)
## Context

This fixes incorrect syntax highlighting inside Rust `json!` macros when
a JSON value is an empty string. In the current Rust tree-sitter
injection setup, most macro bodies are reparsed as nested Rust, which
works for macros like `vec!` but breaks down for JSON-shaped `json!({
... })` content. When the nested Rust parse loses sync at `""`, later
values can inherit incorrect highlighting.

Closes #54838

The fix treats `json!` as an exception to the generic nested-Rust macro
injection rule. That keeps the outer Rust layer responsible for
token-level highlighting inside the macro body, which is enough to
correctly color JSON keys, string values, and booleans without
introducing a brittle JSON-specific injection for Rust token trees.

Manual test after the fix below :

[Screencast from 2026-04-29
00-53-01.webm](https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/26453acf-1d72-4a97-9969-3f8e236dc0cd)

## How to Review

- `crates/grammars/src/rust/injections.scm`: Start here. This is the
functional fix. The generic Rust macro injection rule now excludes
`json`, so `json!` and `serde_json::json!` bodies are no longer reparsed
as nested Rust. Existing special cases like `view!`, `html!`, `sql!`,
and regex-related behavior are left unchanged.

- `crates/language/src/syntax_map/syntax_map_tests.rs`: This adds a
regression test covering the reported case. It verifies that an empty
string inside `serde_json::json!({ ... })` does not break subsequent
highlighting, and that the expected string and boolean captures still
appear for the later JSON entries.

liam b56cf1a352 grammars: Highlight markdown code spans in tables (#57506)
Resolves https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/57501

This diff fixes Markdown inline syntax highlighting inside pipe table
cells. The block Markdown parser represents table content as
`pipe_table_cell` nodes rather than `inline` nodes, so Zed’s existing
`markdown-inline` injection ran for paragraph text but skipped code
spans inside tables.

With this change, table cells also inject `markdown-inline`, allowing
existing inline highlighting to handle code spans consistently between
paragraph text and table cells.

## Summary

Extends #51311 to JSX in JavaScript files, which uses the same

After: only `{}`, `()`, and `[]` receive rainbow colors — angle brackets
are excluded, matching the HTML extension behavior.

This PR reverts a change that highlights shell script arguments as
variables rather than strings. Because of how shell scripts work, all
parameters are strings by default and are regularly represented as such.
The original PR (https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/48067) aimed
to improve highlighting by capturing all arguments as
`variable.parameter`s, but this doesn't align with the idiomatic usage
of shell scripts.

liam a4cf5aa29e Highlight bash conditionals and arithmetic operators (#56484)
Resolves https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/56478

This diff fixes Bash syntax highlighting for conditional and arithmetic
expressions. The Bash parser already recognizes tokens like `[[`, `]]`,
`((`, `))`, `$((`, `!=`, and `||`, but Zed’s Bash highlight query was
not capturing several of them.

With this change, the Bash highlight query styles those operators and
delimiters consistently with existing shell operators, brackets, and
special punctuation.

Sakethanddino bb47d90c76 Highlight nested JSX member expression tags (#53750)
The highlight queries only matched JSX member-expression tags when the
object was a plain identifier (`<A.B>`), so tags with more than one dot
like `<A.B.C>` lost their component-tag highlighting.

The fix explicitly captures every leaf `identifier` and
`property_identifier` at each nesting depth (up to 3 levels) in the
JavaScript and TSX highlight queries so each token gets its own
`@tag.component.jsx` capture that beats the generic `@property` rule.

A more concise approach, capturing the whole nested
`(member_expression)` node as a single `@tag.component.jsx` blob, does
not work because the generic `(property_identifier) @property` rule
targets a smaller, more specific node inside the blob, winning the
resolution for inner segments like `B` in `<A.B.C>`.

Closes #53305

- Fixed highlighting for nested JSX member expression tags in JavaScript

Phillip Davis 9975c75cd3 languages: Fix broken whitespace for C++ (#53709)
Uses tree-sitter indent queries to create a pseudo-scope, since access
modifiers are single-node in thetree-sitter grammar.

The @outdent capture truncates the parent { } indent range at the access
specifier, keeping it at the same level as the class keyword and the
pseudo-scopes from stacking.

The @outdent range selects siblings so we don't outdent the access
specifiers themselves, since screenshots from the reference issue seem
to show that at least one interested party does not prefer outdented
access modifiers, and also it seemed like less of a departure from
existing design.

Also, there are probably more tests than needed because this is my first
time writing treesitter queries and I wanted to triple-guess myself.
Quite open too feedback on which ones are more valuable.

Emamul Andalib ae26376fd5 languages: Fix nested object methods missing from outline panel (#50754)
Shorthand methods (`methodName() {}`) inside nested object literals were
not shown in the Outline panel. The outline query only captured
method_definition when it was a direct child of a variable_declarator's
object, so nested objects (e.g. `deep: { subFn() {} }`) were missed.

Extended the outline query to match method_definition in any object
node, not just top-level variable_declarator objects. Applied the fix to
TypeScript, JavaScript, and TSX outline definitions. Added tests for the

finico 4c05c23669 languages: Change syntax highlighting for JSX elements (#49881)
Syntax highlighting and its customization are very important to many
developers, including me. I've looked through a number of issues and
discussions on this topic and haven't found any active PRs. Currently,
there's no way to customize highlighting for custom JSX tags, as they
use `@type`. Since TSX has a particularly complex syntax and can often
contain types/aliases/generics/tags in a dense sequence, they all blends
into a single color and makes it difficult to "parse" by eyes.

To avoid proposing something arbitrary, I looked into how this is done
elsewhere.

- VS Code `support.class.component.tsx`
[TypeScriptReact.tmLanguage.json](https://github.com/microsoft/vscode/blob/724656efa2c26ab6e7eb2023426dcf2658dc3203/extensions/typescript-basics/syntaxes/TypeScriptReact.tmLanguage.json#L5802)

But it relies on both legacy [tmLanguage naming
conventions](https://macromates.com/manual/en/language_grammars#:~:text=rarely%20be%20used\).-,support,-%E2%80%94%20things%20provided%20by)
and the outdated assumption that React components are always classes.

- ReScript `@tag`
[rescript-zed](https://github.com/rescript-lang/rescript-zed/blob/b3930c1754ab2762938244546ea2c7fb97d01cb3/languages/rescript/highlights.scm#L277)

It's not entirely correct to just use a `@tag` - it's better to
distinguish JSX Intrinsic Elements from custom ones.

- Vue `@tag @tag.component.type.constructor`
[zed-extensions/vue](https://github.com/zed-extensions/vue/blob/2697588c5cde11375d47f53f9449af8e32600d81/languages/vue/highlights.scm#L9C21-L9C52)

- Svelte `@tag @tag.component.type.constructor`
[zed-extensions/svelte](https://github.com/zed-extensions/svelte/blob/ae381a1217d14c26cbedfaf84b0a2f5ae508f40c/languages/svelte/highlights.scm#L46C21-L46C52)

The similarity between Vue and Svelte implementations (perhaps one
borrowed from the other) didn't seem coincidental and the approach felt
appropriate.

**I decided to adopt the same one to maintain consistency for theme
creators.**

So, how it looks:

**Release (0.224.9) version**
<img width="440" height="220" alt="zed-one-release"
src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/6f8726c5-a17e-4387-941c-69e5c1569049"
/>

**Local version with changes** - no breaking changes for builtin themes
- uses `type` color as before and can be changed in themes separately if
needed

src="https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/1997bd5b-7fa4-4346-8338-b5d61e9e832b"
/>

With these changes in the config:

```jsonc
"theme_overrides": {
  "One Light": {
    "syntax": {
      // "tag.component" also matches
      "type.component": {
        "color": "#d3604fff",
      },
    },
  },
},
```

I'm pretty sure this will help many developers enjoy Zed even more.

d7e38abdf7 languages: Fix C/C++ preprocessor directive highlight regression (#49031)
## Summary

- PR #48109 changed the capture name for C/C++ preprocessor directives
from `@keyword.directive` to `@preproc`. While semantically correct, the
builtin themes had `preproc` defined with colors nearly
indistinguishable from plain text (e.g. One Dark `#dce0e5ff`, Ayu Dark
`#bfbdb6ff`), making `#include`, `#define`, etc. appear unhighlighted.
- This PR updates the `preproc` color in all builtin themes (and the
fallback theme) to match their respective `keyword` color, restoring
visible highlighting for preprocessor directives.

Fixes #49024

## Side effects

- Go uses `@preproc` for `//go:` and `// +build` compiler directives.
These will also change from the previous muted gray to the keyword
color. This is arguably an improvement — compiler directives are special
constructs that benefit from visible highlighting, consistent with how
other editors (CLion, VS Code) handle them.

## Test plan

- [x] `cargo test -p language highlight_map` passes
- [x] Open a C/C++ file and verify `#include`, `#define`, `#ifdef`, etc.
are highlighted with the keyword color
- [x] Verify across multiple builtin themes (One Dark, Ayu Dark, Gruvbox
Dark, etc.)
- [x] Open a Go file and verify `//go:` directives are highlighted
reasonably

Finn Evers c5b4c88159 language_core: Remove imports support (#52570)
This PR removes the imports query and all surrounding support from the
language_core crate.

The imports query was experimented with during the addition of Zeta 2.
However, it has been unused for a few months now and the direction does
not seemt to be pursued anymore.

Thus, removing the support here.

ab3697f163 Extract language_core and grammars crates from language (#52238)
This extracts a `language_core` crate from the existing `language`
crate, and creates a `grammars` data crate. The goal is to separate
tree-sitter grammar infrastructure, language configuration, and LSP
adapter types from the heavier buffer/editor integration layer in
`language`.

## Motivation

The `language` crate pulls in `text`, `theme`, `settings`, `rpc`,
`task`, `fs`, `clock`, `sum_tree`, and `fuzzy` — all of which are needed
for buffer integration (`Buffer`, `SyntaxMap`, `Outline`,
`DiagnosticSet`) but not for grammar parsing or language configuration.
Extracting the core types lets downstream consumers depend on
`language_core` without pulling in the full integration stack.

## Dependency graph after extraction

```
language_core   ← gpui, lsp, tree-sitter, util, collections
grammars        ← language_core, rust_embed, tree-sitter-{rust,python,...}
language        ← language_core, text, theme, settings, rpc, task, fs, ...
languages       ← language, grammars
```

## What moved to `language_core`

- `Grammar`, `GrammarId`, and all query config/builder types
- `LanguageConfig`, `LanguageMatcher`, bracket/comment/indent config
types
- `HighlightMap`, `HighlightId` (theme-dependent free functions
`highlight_style` and `highlight_name` stay in `language`)
- `LanguageName`, `LanguageId`
- `LanguageQueries`, `QUERY_FILENAME_PREFIXES`
- `CodeLabel`, `CodeLabelBuilder`, `Symbol`
- `Diagnostic`, `DiagnosticSourceKind`
- `Toolchain`, `ToolchainScope`, `ToolchainList`, `ToolchainMetadata`
- `ManifestName`
- `SoftWrap`
- LSP data types: `BinaryStatus`, `ServerHealth`,
`LanguageServerStatusUpdate`, `PromptResponseContext`, `ToLspPosition`

## What stays in `language`

- `Buffer`, `BufferSnapshot`, `SyntaxMap`, `Outline`, `DiagnosticSet`,
`LanguageScope`
- `LspAdapter`, `CachedLspAdapter`, `LspAdapterDelegate` (reference
`Arc<Language>` and `WorktreeId`)
- `ToolchainLister`, `LanguageToolchainStore` (reference `task` and
`settings` types)
- `ManifestQuery`, `ManifestProvider`, `ManifestDelegate` (reference
`WorktreeId`)
- Parser/query cursor pools, `PLAIN_TEXT`, point conversion functions

## What the `grammars` crate provides

- Embedded `.scm` query files and `config.toml` files for all built-in
languages (via `rust_embed`)
- `load_queries(name)`, `load_config(name)`,
`load_config_for_feature(name, grammars_loaded)`, and `get_file(path)`
functions
- `native_grammars()` for tree-sitter grammar registration (behind
`load-grammars` feature)

## Pre-cleanup (also in this PR)

- Removed unused `Option<&Buffer>` from
`LspAdapter::process_diagnostics`
- Removed unused `&App` from `LspAdapter::retain_old_diagnostic`
- Removed `fs: &dyn Fs` from `ToolchainLister` trait methods
(`PythonToolchainProvider` captures `fs` at construction time instead)
- Moved `Diagnostic`/`DiagnosticSourceKind` out of `buffer.rs` into
their own module

## Backward compatibility

The `language` crate re-exports everything from `language_core`, so
existing `use language::Grammar` (etc.) continues to work unchanged. The
only downstream change required is importing `CodeLabelExt` where
`.fallback_for_completion()` is called on the now-foreign `CodeLabel`
type.
