vinod akshatandKirill Bulatov 97c3168848 Fix horizontal autoscroll not following cursor on long selections (#62691)
# Objective

Fixes #62524

This bug was introduced in a regression from #61487, which fixed
horizontal autoscroll for multi-row selections (word wrap off) by
computing target_left/target_right from the selection's actual start/end
instead of just head.That fix changed target_left/target_right from
always being a single point (head's column) to spanning the full
selection width. This tripped an existing guard (if target_right -
target_left > viewport_width { return None; }) whenever a selection was
wider than the viewport, previously dead code, since
target_left/target_right were never far apart before #61487. The
function now bails out before adjusting scroll at all in that case.

## Solution

In `autoscroll_horizontally`, compute the selection's span width per
row. If it exceeds the viewport width, fall back to tracking just head
(the pre-#61487 behavior) instead of the full start/end span. If it
fits, keep using the full span so the #61409 fix is unaffected.

## Testing

- Did you test these changes? If so, how?
- Tested manually in-app on macOS: selecting a long line with
cmd+shift+end now scrolls correctly.
(NOTE: I used Claude to write these unit tests for me)
- Added test_autoscroll_horizontally_long_selection_tracks_cursor:
selects a 250-character line in a narrow viewport and asserts the scroll
position moves to follow the cursor, instead of staying frozen at 0.
- Added
test_autoscroll_horizontally_fitting_selection_reveals_full_span:
selects a short span that fits within the viewport and asserts the full
span is revealed, confirming the #61409 fix still holds.
- Ran the full editor test suite locally (cargo test --package editor
--lib), all passing.

Finn Eitreim d73ad3de55 gpui: Give divs (the option for) a better scrolling experience (#61797)
# Objective

Closes #56127

Right now there is an issue where in certain contexts, specifically GPUI
div elements, horizontal scrolling w/ a trackpad works very poorly, even
when trying to scroll sideways, vertical scrolling will happen.

This happens with both a trackpad and scrollwheel. The showcase video
also shows the broken behavior.

## Solution

The way that scrolling works in the editor is really nice, scrolls are
locked to the axis they started on but with enough force can change
axis. so by taking the ongoing scroll handler from the editor and moving
it up into GPUI, we can get that same functionality for GPUI.

I somewhat "take over" the functionality of the existing
`restrict_scroll_to_axis` property, because it seems like its purpose
was basically trying to fix this problem already, just unsuccessfully.
The alternative, and would make things overall nicer to look at, would
be to tie this to `allow_concurrent_scroll`, but the effect radius tied
to that option is way bigger, so im holding off on that atleast right
now.

## Testing

Theres a good number of scroll related tests generally, so I don't think
i've perturbed any common existing behaviors. attach the functionality
to `restrict_scroll_to_axis` really limits the surface. There are also
some new tests for the ongoing_scroll behaviors.
Tested on my mac w/ both trackpad and mouse.

vinod akshat 81b67f4741 editor: Fix horizontal autoscroll only revealing part of search matches (#61487)
# Objective

- While navigating between search matches with word wrap off via Select
Next match and Select Previous Match, the horizontal autoscroll would
sometimes fail to scroll the viewport enough to show the full searched
word. This happened in both the cases of Previous match and next search
till we had to come to the first appearance of the word.
- Fixes #61409

## Solution

- In `/crates/editor/src/scroll/autoscroll.rs` the function
`autoscroll_horizontally`, the scroll bounds were both being derived
from `selection.head()`, I inferred that head is the position of the
cursor at the end of the selection. But for the correct `start_column`
and `end_column` it needs to depend not just on the cursor at the end.
So rather than using the head for the calculation for both, I have
calculated them using `selection.start` and `selection.end` directly to
display pts.
- Falling back to col 0 or the full line length when the start or end
lies on different row than the current being processed. Now it scrolls
enough to reveal the entire match.

## Testing

- Did you test these changes? If so, how?
1. Ran full tests using `cargo test` on the full repository
2. Manual test present in the showcase section

- How can other people (reviewers) test your changes? Is there anything
specific they need to know?
Disable word wrap, create a file with a short match near the start of a
long unwrapped line and another match further right, search for it, and
use Select Next/Previous Match to jump between them. The full match
should scroll into view each time.

- If relevant, what platforms did you test these changes on, and are
there any important ones you can't test?
Tested on macOS Tahoe 26.5.2

RaniandAnthony Eid a41ccd1206 editor: Speed up multi cursor editing (#58510)
Early draft for #32051 (multi-cursor editing is very slow, and basically
hangs at high cursor counts). Opening it early like @Anthony-Eid
suggested so we can agree on direction before I go further.

## Root cause

Typing with a cursor on every line is mostly O(N)-per-keystroke work
spread across a few places. I profiled it with `sample` and per-phase
timers around `handle_input`. At 1000 cursors (~24ms before this PR):
the post-edit display-map sync is ~11.8ms, the CRDT edit
(`apply_local_edit`) ~3.7ms, resolving all N selections plus the
per-cursor input loop ~3.5ms, the post-edit selection round-trip ~2.6ms,
and `change_selections` plus transact machinery ~2.4ms. The display sync
re-runs per-edit `SumTree` work through every layer even when nothing
transforms (the plain-text case), and selections get re-resolved through
the full display round-trip several times per keystroke.

## What this does

- Display fast paths: `InlayMap::sync` (no inlays) and
`WrapMap::interpolate` (no soft-wrap) skip the O(edits) transform-tree
rebuild and return the passthrough snapshot, gated so a pending inlay
splice or existing wraps still take the slow path.
- Selection fast path: when nothing collapses buffer content
(`!has_folds() && !has_replacement_blocks()`), resolve `Anchor` to
`Point` to `Offset` batched and skip the per-selection display
round-trip (the `todo(lw)`).
- Render and autoscroll resolve only the first/last/newest selections
instead of all N per frame.
- A parameterized `Multi-cursor input/cursors/{1000,10000,100000}`
benchmark.

## Results

- Typing (`handle_input`): ~2.1x faster (24ms to 11.7ms at 1k).
- Type plus two word-deletes (criterion): 29% faster (89.9 to 63.8ms) at
1k, 37% (959 to 606ms) at 10k.
- Post-edit display sync alone: 11.8 to 3.8ms at 1k, 133 to 45ms at 10k.

All `editor` (759), `display_map` (67), `multi_buffer` (58), and `text`
(36) tests pass, and `./script/clippy` is clean.

## Direction

This is ~2x, and I can get the current architecture to roughly 3.5-4.5x
with a few more safe changes (hoisting the per-cursor
language/editability checks, cheaper snapshot clones). Genuine VS Code
numbers (~1-2us/cursor) aren't reachable while the buffer is a CRDT rope
of fragments with anchor selections and a 5-layer transform stack. That
would need a plain-offset cursor model and/or decoupling display layout
from the edit path, which is a bigger effort I'd want to design with
you. One thing I'd need your call on: `set_active_selections` sends an
`UpdateSelections` collab op every keystroke (building N anchors); can
that be debounced to transaction end, or do presence/follow-mode
features rely on per-keystroke cursor broadcast?

Dino c1f366763d editor: Add preserve scroll strategy for go to definition (#55036)
These changes attempt to expand on the work introduced by
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/54778 by introducing a new
`GoToDefinitionScrollStrategy::Preserve` variant that attempts to keep
the cursor at the same vertical offset within the viewport when
navigating to a definition.

Most of the machinery for this was already in place. To support cases
where the user's scroll position isn't snapped to an exact display row,
for example, after scrolling with the mmouse, `Autoscroll::TopRelative`
and `Autoscroll::BottomRelative` were updated from `usize` to
`ScrollOffset`, allowing fractional offsets.

When the cursor is offscreen at the moment the `editor: go to
definition` action is invoked, `Preserve` falls back to
`Autoscroll::center`, matching the existing default for
`go_to_definition_scroll_strategy`. This avoids attempting to preserve
an offset where the cursor isn't visible which would lead to the cursor
being offscreen when jumping to the definition.

Documentation has also been updated to reflect this new strategy value.

Tim VermeulenandConrad Irwin 0cbdde0ca9 editor: Fix autoscroll sometimes obscuring the current row behind a sticky header (#53165)
Fixes an autoscroll bug that sometimes obscures the current row behind a
sticky header.

The bug was caused by `Editor::autoscroll_vertically` using the
`sticky_header_line_count` value that was cached during the previous
render, which isn't necessarily the number of sticky headers that the
scroll target needs, e.g.
- when jumping to a definition
- when pressing the up arrow key when the selection is in the topmost
visible row with `"vertical_scroll_margin": 0`

This fixes that by not caching `sticky_header_line_count` and instead
querying Tree-sitter on the fly to get the number of sticky headers that
the scroll target needs. Performance-wise this seem okay, I measured it
to take less than 200µs on my machine using a very large Rust file (and
there are still some possible ways to optimize this if necessary). In
particular, the pathological huge single-line file case as discussed in
#48450 shouldn't be an issue here because unlike the main sticky header
Tree-sitter query, here we query the outline items that contain a
particular point rather than those that intersect an entire row.

The `ScrollCursorTop` handler is also simplified to use the same shared
function for counting the number of sticky headers, since that action
doesn't rely on autoscroll.

30b1051cd8 Require multibuffer excerpts to be ordered and nonoverlapping (#52364)
TODO:
- [x] merge main
- [x] nonshrinking `set_excerpts_for_path`
- [x] Test-drive potential problem areas in the app
- [x] prepare cloud side
- [x] test collaboration
- [ ] docstrings
- [ ] ???

## Context

### Background

Currently, a multibuffer consists of an arbitrary list of
anchor-delimited excerpts from individual buffers. Excerpt ranges for a
fixed buffer are permitted to overlap, and can appear in any order in
the multibuffer, possibly separated by excerpts from other buffers.
However, in practice all code that constructs multibuffers does so using
the APIs defined in the `path_key` submodule of the `multi_buffer` crate
(`set_excerpts_for_path` etc.) If you only use these APIs, the resulting
multibuffer will maintain the following invariants:

- All excerpts for the same buffer appear contiguously in the
multibuffer
- Excerpts for the same buffer cannot overlap
- Excerpts for the same buffer appear in order
- The placement of the excerpts for a specific buffer in the multibuffer
are determined by the `PathKey` passed to `set_excerpts_for_path`. There
is exactly one `PathKey` per buffer in the multibuffer

### Purpose of this PR

This PR changes the multibuffer so that the invariants maintained by the
`path_key` APIs *always* hold. It's no longer possible to construct a
multibuffer with overlapping excerpts, etc. The APIs that permitted
this, like `insert_excerpts_with_ids_after`, have been removed in favor
of the `path_key` suite.

The main upshot of this is that given a `text::Anchor` and a
multibuffer, it's possible to efficiently figure out the unique excerpt
that includes that anchor, if any:

```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
    fn buffer_anchor_to_anchor(&self, anchor: text::Anchor) -> Option<multi_buffer::Anchor>;
}
```

And in the other direction, given a `multi_buffer::Anchor`, we can look
at its `text::Anchor` to locate the excerpt that contains it. That means
we don't need an `ExcerptId` to create or resolve
`multi_buffer::Anchor`, and in fact we can delete `ExcerptId` entirely,
so that excerpts no longer have any identity outside their
`Range<text::Anchor>`.

There are a large number of changes to `editor` and other downstream
crates as a result of removing `ExcerptId` and multibuffer APIs that
assumed it.

### Other changes

There are some other improvements that are not immediate consequences of
that big change, but helped make it smoother. Notably:

- The `buffer_id` field of `text::Anchor` is no longer optional.
`text::Anchor::{MIN, MAX}` have been removed in favor of
`min_for_buffer`, etc.
- `multi_buffer::Anchor` is now a three-variant enum (inlined slightly):

```
enum Anchor {
    Min,
    Excerpt {
        text_anchor: text::Anchor,
        path_key_index: PathKeyIndex,
        diff_base_anchor: Option<text::Anchor>,
    },
    Max,
}
```

That means it's no longer possible to unconditionally access the
`text_anchor` field, which is good because most of the places that were
doing that were buggy for min/max! Instead, we have a new API that
correctly resolves min/max to the start of the first excerpt or the end
of the last excerpt:

```
impl MultiBufferSnapshot {
    fn anchor_to_buffer_anchor(&self, anchor: multi_buffer::Anchor) -> Option<text::Anchor>;
}
```
- `MultiBufferExcerpt` has been removed in favor of a new
`map_excerpt_ranges` API directly on `MultiBufferSnapshot`.

f006ebf0d2 editor: Context menu aside scrolling (#35985)
Add support for scrolling the contents rendered aside an
`editor::code_context_menus::CodeContextMenu` by introducing the
`scroll_aside` method.

For now this method is only implemented for the
`CodeContextMenu::Completions` variant, which will scroll the aside
contents for an `editor::code_context_menus::CompletionsMenu` element,
as a `ScrollHandle` is added to the aside content that is rendered.

In order to be possible to trigger this via keybindings, a new editor
action is introduced, `ContextMenuScrollAside`, which accepts a number
of lines or pages to scroll the content by.

Lastly, the default keymaps for both MacOS and Linux, as well as for
Zed's vim mode, are updated to ensure that the following keybindings are
supported when a completion menu is open and the completion item's
documentation is rendered aside:

- `ctrl-e`
- `ctrl-y`
- `ctrl-d`
- `ctrl-u`

Changes introduced on https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/32558
added both `z l` and `z h` to vim mode but it only scrolled the editor's
content, without changing the cursor position. This doesn't reflect the
actual behavior of those motions in vim, so these two commits tackled
that, ensuring that the cursor position is updated, only when the cursor
is on the left or right edges of the editor:

-
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/ea3b866a763ba0bcfc12999ee1741c6528c895b7
-
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/805f41a913c6e86ef8be550d363a3cc2caeccbe9

## Horizontal Autoscroll Fix

After introducing the cursor position update to both `z l` and `z h` it
was noted that there was a bug with using `z l`, followed by `0` and
then `z l` again, as on the second use `z l` the cursor would not be
updated. This would only happen on the first line in the editor, and it
was concluded that it was because the
`editor::scroll::autoscroll::Editor.autoscroll_horizontally` method was
directly updating the scroll manager's anchor offset, instead of using
the `editor::scroll::Editor.set_scroll_position_internal` method, like
is being done by the vertical autoscroll
(`editor::scroll::autoscroll::Editor.autoscroll_vertically`).

This wouldn't update the scroll manager's anchor, which would still
think it was at `(0, 1)` so the cursor position would not be updated.
The changes in [this
commit](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/3957f02e189018ef559cd28516f0b872026b0ce1)
updated the horizontal autoscrolling method to also leverage
`set_scroll_position_internal`.

## Visible Column Count & Page Width Scroll Amount

The changes in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/d83652c3ae1d0356fd7dca7b8922a0116de39ff0
add a `visible_column_count` field to `editor::scroll::ScrollManager`
struct, which allowed the introduction of the `ScrollAmount::PageWidth`
enum.

With these changes, two new actions are introduced,
`vim::normal::scroll::HalfPageRight` and
`vim::normal::scroll::HalfPageLeft` (in
https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/commit/7f344304d56337654a34b1b461a1dc69defd2e4e),
which move the editor half page to the right and half page to the left,
as well as the cursor position, which have also been mapped to `z
shift-l` and `z shift-h`, respectively.

Closes #17219

Release Notes:

- Improved `z l` and `z h` to actually move the cursor position, similar
to vim's behavior
- Added `z shift-l` and `z shift-h` to scroll half of the page width's
to the right or to the left, respectively

DinoandConrad Irwin 93baad76ae vim: Add horizontal scrolling support in vim mode (#32558)
Release Notes:

- Added initial support for both `z l` and `z h` in vim mode

These changes relate to #17219 but don't yet close the issue, as this
Pull Request is simply adding support for horizontal scrolling in vim
mode and actually moving the cursor to the correct column in the current
row will be handled in a different Pull Request.

Some notes on these changes:

- 2 new default keybindings added to vim's keymap
    - `z l` which triggers the new `vim::ColumnRight` action
    - `z h` which triggers the new `vim::ColumnLeft` action
- Introduced a new `ScrollAmount` variant, `ScrollAmount::Column(f32)`
to represent horizontal scrolling
- Replaced usage of `em_width` with `em_advance` to actually scroll by
the width of the cursor, instead of the width of the character

João Marcos ef1da1c635 Scroll to follow expanding part of editor::SelectLargerSyntaxNode (#27295)
When the selection grows both ways, the new code prioritizes the top
part instead of bottom one, this is usually more helpful considering
that most programming language grammars tend to define tokens right
before large delimited blocks, and rarely after (because humans and
parsers read from top to bottom).

Also, revert selection when convenient, so you have more control over
what you're selecting, looking at the selection `head` is commonly more
convenient than at the `tail`.

- Improve scrolling of `editor::SelectLargerSyntaxNode` for better

57ebc7334d Eliminate GPUI View, ViewContext, and WindowContext types (#22632)
There's still a bit more work to do on this, but this PR is compiling
(with warnings) after eliminating the key types. When the tasks below
are complete, this will be the new narrative for GPUI:

- `Entity<T>` - This replaces `View<T>`/`Model<T>`. It represents a unit
of state, and if `T` implements `Render`, then `Entity<T>` implements
`Element`.
- `&mut App` This replaces `AppContext` and represents the app.
- `&mut Context<T>` This replaces `ModelContext` and derefs to `App`. It
is provided by the framework when updating an entity.
- `&mut Window` Broken out of `&mut WindowContext` which no longer
exists. Every method that once took `&mut WindowContext` now takes `&mut
Window, &mut App` and every method that took `&mut ViewContext<T>` now
takes `&mut Window, &mut Context<T>`

Not pictured here are the two other failed attempts. It's been quite a
month!

Tasks:

- [x] Remove `View`, `ViewContext`, `WindowContext` and thread through
`Window`
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Redraw window when entities change
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Get examples and Zed running
- [x] [@cole-miller @mikayla-maki] Fix Zed rendering
- [x] [@mikayla-maki] Fix todo! macros and comments
- [x] Fix a bug where the editor would not be redrawn because of view
caching
- [x] remove publicness window.notify() and replace with
`AppContext::notify`
- [x] remove `observe_new_window_models`, replace with
`observe_new_models` with an optional window
- [x] Fix a bug where the project panel would not be redrawn because of
the wrong refresh() call being used
- [x] Fix the tests
- [x] Fix warnings by eliminating `Window` params or using `_`
- [x] Fix conflicts
- [x] Simplify generic code where possible
- [x] Rename types
- [ ] Update docs

### issues post merge

- [x] Issues switching between normal and insert mode
- [x] Assistant re-rendering failure
- [x] Vim test failures

Kirill BulatovandAlex Kladov 658c52fdf5 Allow to cycle through center/top/bot scroll positions (#16134)
On top of `editor::ScrollCursorCenter`, `editor::ScrollCursorTop`,
`editor::ScrollCursorBottom` actions, adds an
`editor::ScrollCursorCenterTopBottom` one, that allows using a single
keybinding to scroll between positions on the screen.

The implementation matches a corresponding Emacs feature: there's a
timeout (1s) that is kept after every switch, to allow continuously
changing the positions, center (initial) -> top -> bottom
Scrolling behavior is the same as the existing actions (e.g. editor will
ignore scroll to bottom, if there's not enough space above).

After 1s, next position is reset to the initial, center, one.

- Added an `editor::ScrollCursorCenterTopBottom` action for toggling
scroll position with a single keybinding

Massimo Mund 7d846709a4 Fix vertical_scroll_margin not being capped for large vertical_scroll_margin values (#15473)
When switching to function definitions in a new buffer the
`AutoscrollStrategy::Focused` being emitted to scroll to the found
location.
If a large value `vertical_scroll_margin` (e.g.: 99) is set, this leads
to an incorrectly calculated position and the new buffer opens in the
wrong place.

In `autoscroll_vertically()` there is a margin calculated to cap the
value of `vertical_scroll_margin` for certain AutoscrollStrategies. This
margin is being used in `AutoscrollStrategy::Fit` and
`AutoscrollStrategy::Newest` but was probably forgotten for
`AutoscrollStrategy::Focused`.

Previously, when highlighting editor rows with a color, we always
auto-scrolled to the first highlighted row. This was useful in contexts

specify whether or not you want the autoscroll behavior. This is needed
because we want to highlight rows in the assistant panel, and we don't
want the autoscroll.

Antonio ScandurraandNathan 091740e187 Introduce autoscroll support for elements (#10889)

enable container elements such as `List` to change their scroll position

As a drive-by, we also:

- Renamed `Element::before_layout` to `Element::request_layout`
- Renamed `Element::after_layout` to `Element::prepaint`
- Introduced a new `List::splice_focusable` method to splice focusable
