Katie Geer 1f317acbf7 agent_ui: Replace raw error messages with user-friendly copy in the agent panel (#53099)
Replaces raw provider error strings in the agent panel with specific,
user-friendly error callouts. Each error now has a clear title,
actionable copy, and appropriate buttons instead of the generic "An
Error Happened" fallback.

Error variants added:

Variant | Title | Body | Trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| `RateLimitExceeded` | Rate Limit Reached | {Provider}'s rate limit was
reached. Zed will retry automatically. You can also wait a moment and
try again. | Provider rate limit exhausted after retries |
| `ServerOverloaded` | Provider Unavailable | {Provider}'s servers are
temporarily unavailable. Zed will retry automatically. If the problem
persists, check the provider's status page. | Provider server overloaded
or internal server error |
| `PromptTooLarge` | Context Too Large | This conversation is too long
for the model's context window. Start a new thread or remove some
attached files to continue. | Conversation exceeds model's context
window |
| `NoApiKey` | API Key Missing | No API key is configured for
{Provider}. Add your key via the Agent Panel settings to continue. | No
API key configured for a direct provider |
| `StreamError` | Connection Interrupted | The connection to
{Provider}'s API was interrupted. Zed will retry automatically. If the
problem persists, check your network connection. | Stream dropped or I/O
error during generation |
| `InvalidApiKey` | Invalid API Key | The API key for {Provider} is
invalid or has expired. Update your key via the Agent Panel settings to
continue. | API key present but invalid or expired |
| `PermissionDenied` | Permission Denied | {Provider}'s API rejected the
request due to insufficient permissions. Check that your API key has
access to this model. | API key lacks access to the requested model |
| `RequestFailed` | Request Failed | The request could not be completed
after multiple attempts. Try again in a moment. | Upstream provider
unreachable after retries |
| `MaxOutputTokens` | Output Limit Reached | The model stopped because
it reached its maximum output length. You can ask it to continue where
it left off. | Model hit its maximum output token budget |
| `NoModelSelected` | No Model Selected | Select a model from the model
picker below to get started. | No model configured when a message is
sent |
| `ApiError` | API Error | {Provider}'s API returned an unexpected
error. If the problem persists, try switching models or restarting Zed.
## Approach

- Added typed errors (`NoModelConfiguredError`, `MaxOutputTokensError`)
where previously raw strings were used, so they can be reliably downcast
- Extended `From<anyhow::Error> for ThreadError` to downcast
`LanguageModelCompletionError` variants before falling through to the
generic `Other` case
- Each variant has a dedicated `render_*` function with appropriate
buttons (retry icon, New Thread, or none)
- Telemetry events updated with specific `kind` labels for each new
variant

Release Notes:

- Improved error messages in the agent panel to show specific,
actionable copy instead of raw provider error strings

Self-Review Checklist:

- [ x] I've reviewed my own diff for quality, security, and reliability
- [n/a] Unsafe blocks (if any) have justifying comments
- [ x] The content is consistent with the [UI/UX

Katie Geer 6732a551e6 seo: Expand /docs/ai/tools examples + cross-link from external-agents (#49758)
Two changes to support pushing `/docs/ai/tools` into the top 10 for
"agent tools" (8,900 monthly volume, currently position 11).

**`docs/src/ai/tools.md`** — adds a concrete usage example to 7 tools:
`diagnostics`, `grep`, `fetch`, `edit_file`, `terminal`, `web_search`,
and `subagent`. Each example shows a realistic scenario rather than
restating the description.

**`docs/src/ai/external-agents.md`** — adds a single sentence
cross-linking to `tools.md` after the supported-agents intro paragraph,
for users who land on that page looking for what the built-in agent can
do.

Fixes broken `docs/accounts.html` links in all five migration guides.

## Changes

Replace `https://zed.dev/docs/accounts.html` with
`https://zed.dev/docs/authentication` in:

- `docs/src/migrate/vs-code.md`
- `docs/src/migrate/intellij.md`
- `docs/src/migrate/pycharm.md`
- `docs/src/migrate/webstorm.md`
- `docs/src/migrate/rustrover.md`

These links were flagged as 4xx in an SEO audit. The `accounts.html`
page does not exist; `authentication` is the correct destination.

Katie GeerandClaude Opus 4.6 37d903eccb docs: SEO content improvements for AI section (#49128)
## Summary

- **Add category-claiming keywords** to 4 key AI doc intros (overview,
agent panel, edit prediction, configuration) so Google associates these
pages with "AI code editor" search terms
- **Expand AI overview into a pillar page** with substantive feature
summaries and a "How Zed approaches AI" differentiation section (open
source, native performance, multi-model, external agents, privacy)
- **Improve internal linking** across 11 files to strengthen the AI
topic cluster

## Internal linking changes

**Inbound links (non-AI docs → AI section):**
- `editing-code.md` → AI overview
- `terminal.md` → Inline Assistant + Agent Panel
- `configuring-zed.md` → AI Configuration
- `remote-development.md` → AI overview

**Fix orphans within AI section:**
- `billing.md` linked to subscription + plans (was orphaned with zero
internal links)
- `tools.md`, `rules.md`, `llm-providers.md`, `tool-permissions.md`,
`models.md` all now cross-link to related AI pages

**Outbound:**
- `overview.md` → `zed.dev/ai` and `getting-started.md`

## Test plan

- [ ] `mdbook build docs` succeeds
- [ ] Spot-check links resolve correctly in built output
- [ ] Review overview.md content for docs voice fit

Katie GeerandZed Zippy 2d26605348 Add telemetry for user-facing notifications (#48558)
## Summary

Adds a "Notification Shown" telemetry event that fires whenever a
user-facing notification is displayed in Zed. This helps the team
understand error patterns, notification frequency, and which parts of
the application generate the most notifications.

## Event Schema

| Property | Type | Description |
|----------|------|-------------|
| `notification_type` | `string` | `"error"` or `"notification"` |
| `source` | `string` | Origin category (e.g., `lsp`, `git`, `settings`,
`editor`) |
| `lsp_name` | `string?` | Language server name (only for LSP
notifications) |
| `level` | `string?` | Severity: `"critical"`, `"warning"`, or `"info"`
|
| `has_actions` | `bool` | Whether the notification has action buttons |
| `notification_id` | `string` | Debug string of the NotificationId |
| `is_auto_dismissing` | `bool` | Whether the notification
auto-dismisses |

## NotificationSource Categories

A new `NotificationSource` enum categorizes notifications by origin:

- `lsp` - Language server notifications
- `settings` - Settings/keymap parse errors
- `update` - App updates, release notes
- `extension` - Extension suggestions/errors
- `git` - Git operations, commit errors
- `project` - Project-level issues
- `collab` - Collaboration notifications
- `remote` - SSH/remote project errors
- `file` - File access errors
- `editor` - Editor operations (search, encoding)
- `agent` - AI assistant notifications
- `cli` - CLI installation
- `system` - Generic fallback

## Privacy

**Message content is intentionally not included** in telemetry because:
- LSP messages come from external servers and may contain file paths or
error chains
- Error messages may contain sensitive paths or API-related information
- The metadata alone provides sufficient insight for error tracking

## Implementation

Updated function signatures to include `NotificationSource`:
- `show_notification(id, source, cx, build_fn)`
- `show_toast(toast, source, cx)`
- `show_error(err, source, cx)`
- `show_app_notification(id, source, cx, build_fn)`
- `notify_err(workspace, source, cx)`
- `notify_async_err(source, cx)`
- `notify_app_err(source, cx)`
- `detach_and_notify_err(source, window, cx)`

Release Notes

- N/A (internal telemetry change)

955581bdfd agent_ui: Add additional telemetry for thread errors (#47971)
This PR extends error telemetry coverage in the agent panel, building on
#46836 which added telemetry for thread errors.

`"Agent Panel Error Shown"` (extended)

Now also fires for:

- **Load errors** - when an agent fails to start
- **Configuration errors** - when LLM provider setup is incomplete

`"Agent Token Limit Warning"` (new event)

Fires when a thread approaches or exceeds its token/context limit. This
is tracked separately from errors because it's an informational warning,
not a failure.

## Implementation Notes

- All telemetry fires **once per error occurrence**, not on every render
- Load error telemetry fires in `handle_load_error()` when the error is
first received
- Token limit telemetry uses a flag to track state transitions (Normal →
Warning → Exceeded)
- Configuration error telemetry tracks the last emitted error kind to
avoid duplicates

This PR updates the Git documentation to accurately reflect the current

**Changes:**

- **Added Word Diff setting location**: The `word_diff_enabled` setting
is accessible in the Settings Editor under **Languages & Tools >
Miscellaneous**, which wasn't documented.

- **Simplified Remotes section**: Removed claims about command palette
actions for managing remotes that don't exist. The section now
accurately describes the remote selector in the Git Panel.

- **Added File History section**: Combined two paragraphs that said the
same thing.

Katie GeerandMichael Benfield 380621a1e8 Add "Agent Panel Error Shown" telemetry with ACP error details (#46848)
Adds a new "Agent Panel Error Shown" telemetry event that fires when
users see errors in the agent panel. For errors from external ACP agents
(like Claude Code), we capture additional details.

Previously, we had no visibility into what errors users were
encountering in the agent panel. This made it difficult to diagnose
issues, especially with external agents.

The new telemetry event includes:
- `agent` — The agent telemetry ID
- `session_id` — The session ID
- `kind` — Error category (payment_required, authentication_required,
refusal, other, etc.)
- `acp_error_code` — The ACP error code when available (e.g.,
"InternalError")
- `acp_error_message` — The ACP error message when available

Katie Geer 41ee5a22ee workspace: Move panel telemetry to workspace level (#46809)
This refactors the "Panel Button Clicked" telemetry event to fire from
`workspace.rs` instead of `dock.rs`.

Previously, the event was emitted in the `PanelButtons` render method's
click handler. Now it fires at the workspace level in two places:
- `toggle_dock()` - captures panel toggles via dock buttons
- `focus_panel<T>()` - captures panel focus via keyboard shortcuts

This ensures the telemetry fires once per user action regardless of
input method, and retrieves the panel name dynamically via
`persistent_name()` rather than relying on a pre-computed local
variable.
