# Objective
Closes#62252
The Git Panel could only stash *everything* — `Stash All` runs
`git stash push --include-untracked`, sweeping tracked edits and
untracked files
into a single entry. There was no way to stash a subset, so the common
workflows
of "park my tracked edits but keep my new scratch files" and "park what
I've
staged and keep working on the rest" required dropping to the terminal.

## Solution
Add two stash variants alongside `Stash All`, surfaced in the Git
Panel's
overflow menu based on how the list is currently grouped, so the menu
mirrors the
sections the user can actually see:
| Group By | Stash entries offered |
| --- | --- |
| None | Stash All |
| Tracked & Untracked | Stash All, **Stash Tracked** |
| Staged & Unstaged | Stash All, **Stash Staged** |
- **`git::StashTracked`** stashes tracked changes and leaves untracked
files in
place. It reuses the existing pathspec plumbing
(`Repository::stash_entries`),
filtering the status list down to the paths to stash.
- **`git::StashStaged`** stashes the index only, leaving unstaged
changes in
place. This *cannot* be expressed as a pathspec — a partially staged
file would
have its unstaged hunks stashed too — so it needs git's own `--staged`
flag.
That meant a new `GitRepository::stash_staged` backend method and an
`optional bool staged` field on `proto::Stash` so remote projects work
too.
Both actions are unbound by default and are dispatchable from the
command palette
when the panel is focused.
One subtlety worth calling out for review: `Stash Tracked` filters on
`FileStatus::is_created()`, not `is_untracked()`. Staging a new file
flips it from
`Untracked` to `Tracked { Added }`, but the panel still lists it under
**Untracked** — using `is_untracked()` meant staged-new files were
silently
stashed. `is_created()` is the same predicate the panel uses to build
that section
(`git_panel.rs`), so the menu item and the list can no longer disagree.
This branch also includes a separate commit adding **per-section
staging**
(`git::StageSection` / `git::UnstageSection`) — right-click a file to
stage or
unstage every entry in its section. Happy to split that into its own PR
if
preferred.
## Testing
Manually tested on macOS against a scratch repo with a mix of states:
modified
tracked files, untracked files, and untracked files that had been
staged.
- `Stash Tracked` with tracked edits + untracked files → only tracked
edits
stashed; untracked files remain.
- `Stash Tracked` with untracked files **staged** → they remain, staged.
This was
broken in an earlier revision and drove the `is_created()` fix above.
- `Stash Staged` with one file staged and another modified-but-unstaged
→ only the
staged file is stashed; the unstaged edit and untracked files survive.
- `Stash Pop` round-trips both cases back to the original state, with no
conflicts.
- Menu contents and disabled states verified in all three Group By
modes.
- Per-section staging covered by a new unit test,
`test_stage_section_scopes_to_selected_section`.
Not covered by automated tests: the stash actions themselves.
`FakeGitRepository`
leaves every stash method `unimplemented!()`, so stash behavior isn't
reachable
from GPUI tests today — consistent with the existing untested
`StashAll`. Adding
fake-repo stash support looks like a worthwhile follow-up but felt out
of scope here.
Reviewers on non-macOS platforms: nothing here is platform-specific.
Note that
`Stash Staged` requires **git 2.35+** (Jan 2022) for `git stash push
--staged`;
older git surfaces a clear error toast rather than failing opaquely. The
remote
path (`proto::Stash.staged`) has not been exercised against a live
collab session.

Follow-up to #61185, which moved hook execution from Zed into `git
commit` itself. There was previously no way to skip hooks from the UI;
#59846 and #56318 attempted to add one on top of the old behavior. This
PR adds support on top of the new implementation.
Adds a “Skip Hooks” toggle to the commit menus in the Git panel and
commit modal, with a corresponding command-palette action. When enabled,
the next commit runs with `git commit --no-verify`, skipping pre-commit
and commit-msg hooks. The toggle clears after a successful commit or
when switching repositories, but remains enabled when a commit fails so
it can be retried.
Release Notes:
- Added a “Skip Hooks” commit option that skips pre-commit and
commit-msg hooks.
On Linux and FreeBSD the native file watcher is non-recursive, so a
watch on the .git directory itself does not report changes to files
nested below it. Loose refs live in nested directories under refs, so
external git commit, fetch, branch, and update-ref operations that don't
also touch a direct child of .git (like the index) went entirely
unnoticed.
Watch every directory in the refs tree when a repository is inserted,
and watch directories subsequently created under refs (new remotes,
slash-named branches) as their creation events arrive. On platforms with
recursive watchers these registrations dedupe against the existing
recursive watch, making them free.

# Objective
- Polish the solo diff review UI by reducing redundant controls and
hiding inactive fold controls in split diff views.
## Solution
- Collapse the solo diff header's `Stage File` / `Unstage File` actions
into one button that shows the action relevant to the file's current
staging state.
- Stop reserving fold gutter space and rendering fold crease toggles for
editors with companion snapshots, matching the existing LHS split diff
behavior.
## Testing

- `cargo check -p git_ui`

## Showcase
Before, the solo diff header showed both file-level staging actions at
once, and the RHS split diff gutter could show fold arrows that did not
work in that view. After this change, the header shows the relevant
file-level staging action and split companion panes no longer show
inactive fold controls.
Release Notes:
- Improved solo diff controls by showing the relevant file staging
action and hiding inactive fold toggles in split diffs.
# Objective
When reviewing changes in the Git Panel, the only ways to open a file
were through a diff view ("Open Diff" or "Open Diff (File)"). There was
no way to open the file directly in the editor to inspect or edit its
current contents without entering a diff.
This PR adds a **View File** action to the Git Panel changes list
context menu.
## Solution
- Add a `git::ViewFile` action in `crates/git/src/git.rs`, alongside
other per-file git actions like `FileHistory`.
- Wire it into the Git Panel file context menu, between the diff actions
and "View File History".
- Implement `GitPanel::view_file` to resolve the selected entry's repo
path to a project path and open it via `workspace.open_path_preview`,
matching the pattern used in `commit_view::open_file_at_head`.
- Document the new action in `docs/src/git.md`.
### Related issues
- https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/58250
## Testing
- Added three GPUI tests in `git_panel.rs`:
- `test_view_file_tracked` — modified tracked file
- `test_view_file_untracked` — untracked file
- `test_view_file_tree_view` — nested file in tree view
- Ran `cargo test -p git_ui test_view_file` — all three pass.
- Ran `./script/clippy -p git_ui` — clean.
**Manual testing for reviewers:**
1. Open a project with changed files and open the Git Panel.
2. Right-click a changed file and select **View File**.
3. Confirm the file opens in the editor (not a diff view).
4. Repeat for an untracked file and with tree view enabled.
5. Confirm **Open Diff** and **Open Diff (File)** still work.
Tested on macOS only. Linux and Windows should behave the same since
this is a context menu action with no platform-specific code, but I
haven't verified on those platforms.

This is an unsolicited contribution, I hope that's ok. The feature is
small and I didn't want to open a discussion just for this.
There was no way to write to `.git/info/exclude` from Zed, so I added
one.
The "Add to .gitignore" action in the project panel and git panel
context menus is now grouped under a "Git" submenu, with a new "Add to
.git/info/exclude" action next to it.
Both actions:
- skip the write if the pattern is already there
- make sure there's a trailing newline
- show an error toast if something goes wrong
- fail gracefully on remote repositories
In the git panel both entries are disabled unless the file is untracked,
same as the gitignore action was before.
The write logic is shared via a small private helper, covered by two
unit tests.

Upgrades git2 from 0.20.1 to 0.21.0 with the `unstable-sha256` feature -
adds ability to open and work with git repositories using the SHA-256
object format. `Oid::from_str` now detects 64-char hex strings to parse
SHA-256 OIDs correctly.
Also adapts to breaking API changes in 0.21.0:
`Remote::url()` and `Commit::message()` both now return `Result`.

Using the existing commit editor in the Git Panel to type out longer
commit messages has been somewhat hard. I believe this happens because
it takes a very small portion of the UI which, unfortunately, when `git:
expand commit editor` is used, a modal ends up taking the center of the
editor, making it possible to have the commit editor open on the side,
while the `git: diff` view is open.
As such, this Pull Request introduces a new
`git::ToggleFillCommitEditor` action that allows users to update the
commit editor's height so as to take as much vertical space as possible,
hiding the entries status and simply rendering the Git Panel's footer.
This makes it easier to be able to write longer commit messages while
still having the `git: branch diff` on the side, something that's very
complicated with the default number of lines in the commit editor and
impossible using the `CommitModal`.

Add a `git::RestoreAndNext` action that restores the diff hunk at the
cursor and advances to the next hunk. In the git diff view, the default
restore keybinding (`cmd-alt-z` on macOS, `ctrl-k ctrl-r` on
Linux/Windows) is remapped to this action so users can quickly restore
hunks in sequence. Also refactor `go_to_hunk_before_or_after_position`
to accept a `wrap_around` parameter, eliminating duplicated
hunk-navigation logic in `do_stage_or_unstage_and_next` and
`restore_and_next`.

### Background
On Windows, paths are normally separated by `\`, unlike mac and linux
where they are separated by `/`. When editing code in a project that
uses a different path style than your local system (e.g. remoting from
Windows to Linux, using WSL, and collaboration between windows and unix
users), the correct separator for a path may differ from the "native"
separator.
Previously, to work around this, Zed converted paths' separators in
numerous places. This was applied to both absolute and relative paths,
leading to incorrect conversions in some cases.
### Solution
Many code paths in Zed use paths that are *relative* to either a
worktree root or a git repository. This PR introduces a dedicated type
for these paths called `RelPath`, which stores the path in the same way
regardless of host platform, and offers `Path`-like manipulation APIs.
RelPath supports *displaying* the path using either separator, so that
we can display paths in a style that is determined at runtime based on
the current project.
The representation of absolute paths is left untouched, for now.
Absolute paths are different from relative paths because (except in
contexts where we know that the path refers to the local filesystem)
they should generally be treated as opaque strings. Currently we use a
mix of types for these paths (std::path::Path, String, SanitizedPath).

Closes #ISSUE
Adds a new `documentation` method to actions, that is extracted from doc
comments when using the `actions!` or derive macros.
Additionally, this PR adds doc comments to as many action definitions in
Zed as possible.
Release Notes:
- N/A *or* Added/Fixed/Improved ...
Instead of a menagerie of macros for implementing `Action`, now there
are just two:
* `actions!(editor, [MoveLeft, MoveRight])`
* `#[derive(..., Action)]` with `#[action(namespace = editor)]`
In both contexts, `///` doc comments can be provided and will be used in
`JsonSchema`.
In both contexts, parameters can provided in `#[action(...)]`:
- `namespace = some_namespace` sets the namespace. In Zed this is
required.
- `name = "ActionName"` overrides the action's name. This must not
contain "::".
- `no_json` causes the `build` method to always error and
`action_json_schema` to return `None`
and allows actions not implement `serde::Serialize` and
`schemars::JsonSchema`.
- `no_register` skips registering the action. This is useful for
implementing the `Action` trait
while not supporting invocation by name or JSON deserialization.
- `deprecated_aliases = ["editor::SomeAction"]` specifies deprecated old
names for the action.
These action names should *not* correspond to any actions that are
registered. These old names
can then still be used to refer to invoke this action. In Zed, the
keymap JSON schema will
accept these old names and provide warnings.
- `deprecated = "Message about why this action is deprecation"`
specifies a deprecation message.
In Zed, the keymap JSON schema will cause this to be displayed as a
warning. This is a new feature.
Also makes the following changes since this seems like a good time to
make breaking changes:
* In `zed.rs` tests adds a test with an explicit list of namespaces. The
rationale for this is that there is otherwise no checking of `namespace
= ...` attributes.
* `Action::debug_name` renamed to `name_for_type`, since its only
difference with `name` was that it
* `Action::name` now returns `&'static str` instead of `&str` to match
the return of `name_for_type`. This makes the action trait more limited,
but the code was already assuming that `name_for_type` is the same as
`name`, and it requires `&'static`. So really this just makes the trait
harder to misuse.
* Various action reflection methods now use `&'static str` instead of
`SharedString`.

https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/issues/30972 brought up another
case where our context is not enough to track the actual source of the
issue: we get a general top-level error without inner error.
The reason for this was `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("failed to read HEAD
SHA"))?; ` on the top level.
The PR finally reworks the way we use anyhow to reduce such issues (or
at least make it simpler to bubble them up later in a fix).
On top of that, uses a few more anyhow methods for better readability.
* `.ok_or_else(|| anyhow!("..."))`, `map_err` and other similar error
conversion/option reporting cases are replaced with `context` and
`with_context` calls
* in addition to that, various `anyhow!("failed to do ...")` are
stripped with `.context("Doing ...")` messages instead to remove the
parasitic `failed to` text
* `anyhow::ensure!` is used instead of `if ... { return Err(...); }`
calls
* `anyhow::bail!` is used instead of `return Err(anyhow!(...));`

This PR reworks the `FakeGitRepository` type that we use for testing git
interactions, to make it more realistic. In particular, the `status`
method now derives the Git status from the differences between HEAD, the
index, and the working copy. This way, if you modify a file in the
`FakeFs`, the Git repository's `status` method will reflect that
modification.

This PR finishes up the support for generating commit messages using an
LLM.
We're shelling out to `git diff` to get the diff text, as it seemed more
efficient than attempting to reconstruct the diff ourselves from our
internal Git state.

Closes https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/25915
In the issue, Zed had caused `.git/lfs/tmp/466102258`-like files to
appear in the directory, which lead to background FS event listener to
handle this as an update, incrementing snapshot's `scan_id`, which lead
to git status rescan, which caused another increment to `status_scan_id`
— incrementing either of the IDs causes the related repo data to be
considered "changed:

hence propagating events to the other parts of the system (e.g. git
blame, which was also active in the issue's case)

Due to repo update events sent, another `.git/lfs/tmp/` entry is
created, things start over...
The PR fixes this by ignoring any `.git/lfs/` directory-related FS
events, as needed for the current git status update heuristics.
