Replaces the verbose struct-literal construction of `gpui::BoxShadow`
with a builder API:
- `BoxShadow::new(offset_x, offset_y, color)` takes the required fields,
with arguments ordered to match the CSS `box-shadow` property.
- `.blur_radius(_)`, `.spread_radius(_)`, and `.inset()` set the
optional fields.
All in-tree call sites are migrated, including the Tailwind-style
`shadow_xs`..`shadow_2xl` helpers in `gpui_macros`, the `ElevationIndex`
shadows in `ui`, and various widgets across `editor`, `workspace`,
`agent_ui`, and `ai_onboarding`. The fields on `BoxShadow` remain
public, so external code using struct-literal construction continues to
work.

GPUI API change only:
- added `.alpha(a: f32)` method to `RGBA`
- added `.opacity(factor: f32)` method to `RGBA`
- added documentation for both new methods
- added test coverage for both methods
These implementations already exist for the `HSLA` struct and were
missing for `RGBA`.

This PR fixes some cases where scrolling is choppy due to a user
inputting a scroll event while a list state is going through a
remeasure. Currently, the list state would ignore the user's scroll and
fall back to the pending scroll position, this PR fixes this by rebasing
the pending scroll onto the user's new scroll position.

## Context
This follow-up was inspired by Christopher’s suggestion in the review
comment on #58483: long filenames should truncate in the middle so both
the beginning and the suffix/extension remain visible.
Previously, very long filenames in picker rows could still be clipped or
end-truncated, making files with shared prefixes hard to distinguish.
This adds middle-truncation support to GPUI text overflow and applies it
to filename-focused picker surfaces: the tab switcher and the Ctrl-P
file finder. Normal editor tab bar behavior remains unchanged and
continues to use the existing title length cap.
## How to Review
- **`crates/gpui/src/style.rs`, `crates/gpui/src/styled.rs`,
`crates/gpui/src/elements/text.rs`,
`crates/gpui/src/text_system/line_wrapper.rs`**: Adds
`TextOverflow::TruncateMiddle`, wires it through text layout, and
implements middle truncation while preserving valid text runs. Very
narrow widths now show the truncation affix instead of falling back to
the abruptly clipped original text.
- **`crates/ui/src/components/label/label_like.rs`,
`crates/ui/src/components/label/label.rs`,
`crates/ui/src/components/label/highlighted_label.rs`**: Exposes middle
truncation through the shared label components.
- **`crates/workspace/src/item.rs`, `crates/editor/src/items.rs`,
`crates/workspace/src/pane.rs`,
`crates/tab_switcher/src/tab_switcher.rs`**: Adds an explicit
tab-content opt-in for middle truncation. The tab switcher enables it,
while the normal tab bar and dragged tabs keep their existing behavior.
- **`crates/file_finder/src/file_finder.rs`**: Applies middle truncation
to Ctrl-P file finder filenames and lets the path shrink from the start
so long paths do not hide important filename suffixes.

Release Notes:
- Improved long filename truncation in the tab switcher and file finder

This PR builds out GPUI's benchmark harness so render benchmarks measure
realistic frame costs using GPUI-owned, runtime-gated instrumentation.
It adds measurements for frame draw time, dirty-to-draw latency,
invalidation coalescing, and frame-budget overruns, and runs benchmark
workloads with production-like concurrency.
## How it works
**Frame timings flow through the GPUI profiler.** `Window::draw` emits a
`FrameTiming { window_id, dirty_at, invalidations, draw_start, draw_end
}` event into a global ring buffer in `gpui::profiler`, mirroring the
existing task-timing channel. Collection is runtime-gated by
`profiler::set_frame_trace_enabled` (one relaxed atomic load when
disabled — no `Instant::now` calls in production). `BenchReport` is a
pure listener: it drains events through a cursor-based
`FrameTimingCollector` and builds histograms in the bench layer.
`Window` carries no bench-only cfg fields, and the same event channel
can later feed the miniprofiler UI or an in-app frame-time HUD.
**`BenchDispatcher`** is a multithreaded `PlatformDispatcher` for
benchmarks: background tasks run on a worker pool (same priority queue
as `LinuxDispatcher`, with task-profiler hooks), timers fire in real
time on a dedicated thread, and foreground tasks queue until the bench
thread drains them with a blocking `run_until_idle()`. Unlike
`TestDispatcher`, work executes in parallel in real time, so wall-clock
measurements reflect production concurrency. In-flight accounting is
panic-safe via drop guards.
**`gpui::bench_platform()`** returns a per-process `TestPlatform` backed
by the `BenchDispatcher`, cached in a thread-local so worker threads
persist across Criterion calibration passes. This replaces the earlier
approach of constructing a real platform per invocation, which had
process-global singleton issues, never ran foreground tasks (no run loop
pumped the main queue), and couldn't open windows on headless CI.
**Text shaping** uses `NoopTextSystem`: deterministic across
machines/font installations and CI-portable. Measured cost of this
trade: ~10% of editor draw time vs `MacTextSystem` (Noop still emits one
glyph per character at fixed advances, so downstream layout/paint
structure is preserved).
**GPU coverage (macOS only for now).** `PlatformHeadlessRenderer` gained
`render_scene`, which encodes and submits the scene to Metal against a
cached offscreen target without blocking on completion or reading pixels
back — matching production `present()` CPU cost (`render_scene_to_image`
would overstate it: it waits for the GPU and copies pixels back).
`TestWindow::draw` forwards scenes to the renderer, the real
`MetalAtlas` means glyph/SVG rasterization happens during paint, and
`bench_renderer` presents after each measured update. Platforms without
a headless renderer degrade to discarding the scene.
## Example
```rust
#[gpui::bench]
fn editor_render(cx: &mut BenchAppContext) {
init_context(cx);
let buffer = cx.update(|cx| { /* build a MultiBuffer */ });
let mut window = cx.add_empty_window();
let editor = window.update(|window, cx| {
let editor = window.replace_root(cx, |window, cx| {
let mut editor = Editor::new(EditorMode::full(), buffer, None, window, cx);
editor.set_style(editor::EditorStyle::default(), window, cx);
editor
});
window.focus(&editor.focus_handle(cx), cx);
editor
});
let mut move_down = true;
cx.bench_renderer(editor, move |editor, window, cx| {
if move_down {
editor.move_down(&MoveDown, window, cx);
} else {
editor.move_up(&MoveUp, window, cx);
}
move_down = !move_down;
});
}
```
## Example output (release, M-series)
```
(`invalidations per frame: mean 5.00` is real signal: each `move_down`
notifies the window five times before the draw.)
## Known limitations
- **Draw-per-flush**: the harness draws synchronously when effects flush
rather than coalescing invalidations to a vsync tick, so `dirty-to-draw`
excludes queueing delay, and `frame budget overruns` is a draw-time
budget proxy rather than actual missed presents. A frame-paced mode is
natural follow-up work.
- **GPU submission is measured on macOS only**; other platforms have no
headless renderer yet.
- The GPUI report includes Criterion warmup/calibration samples (noted
in the output); Criterion's `time` is the regression-gating number.
- `run_until_idle` waits for queued, running, and already-due work, but
not for timers that haven't reached their due time — the dispatcher runs
in real time and can't skip ahead like `TestDispatcher`'s virtual clock.
## Future work
- A vsync-like frame-pacing mode (suppress draw-on-flush; tick-driven
draw + present) so dirty-to-draw captures queueing delay
- Record present duration in `FrameTiming` so the report can split draw
vs present
- Benches that scroll through novel content (cold layout caches) and an
agent-panel render bench
- Headless renderers for Windows/Linux
- Move benches into a dedicated crate
When a pending tool call awaiting permission contains tall content (e.g.
a full plan in Claude Code plan mode) and the inline prompt is scrolled
out of view, the floating awaiting-permission row embeds that content
and can grow to consume the entire panel, squeezing the conversation
list to zero height. `ListState::item_is_above_viewport` /
`item_is_below_viewport` returned `None` for a zero-height viewport, so
the row's visibility decision oscillated from frame to frame, flickering
between the conversation and the permission prompt and making the thread
unusable.
This PR fixes the root cause and hardens the UI:
- `gpui`: `item_is_above_viewport` / `item_is_below_viewport` now answer
definitively from the last layout bounds even when the viewport is
zero-height, so callers that size sibling UI based on these queries
can't oscillate. Adds a regression test.
- `agent_ui`: adds a `Floating` tool call layout used by the
awaiting-permission row that caps the embedded tool call content with a
scrollable max height, so the row can never crowd the conversation list
out of view while keeping the permission buttons visible. Adds an
integration test that drives real window draws and asserts the row's
visibility is stable across frames.
## Summary
This PR fixes horizontal jumping of the IME candidate window during text
composition.
On the shared `selected_bounds` path used by Windows, the candidate
window no longer follows the preedit caret character-by-character.
Instead, it anchors to the start of the current visual line, which keeps
the candidate window stable while typing.
Linux Wayland uses a different IME positioning path, so it was not
affected by the original implementation in this PR. This PR now also
includes a Wayland-specific adjustment so that Wayland uses the same
visual-line anchoring behavior.
## Changes
1. **Shared / Windows path**
Updated `selected_bounds` in `crates/gpui/src/platform.rs` to use a
visual-line-aware anchor for preedit text.
This removes the distracting horizontal movement of the candidate window
while typing and keeps the anchor aligned with the active visual line.
2. **Linux Wayland path**
Updated the Wayland IME area calculation in
`crates/gpui_linux/src/linux/wayland/window.rs` to use the same
visual-line-start anchoring strategy for preedit text.
This brings Linux Wayland in line with the Windows behavior while
preserving Wayland's platform-specific IME handling.
## Notes
I had previously tried a separate Wayland-specific fix in
24f7bb6e27, but later reverted it in
8cfe7a2a54441f89c170fbdd165a49b3e787b3c4 because the behavior was not
good enough and it regressed the original positioning behavior.
The current Wayland implementation is a new, simpler approach that keeps
the original behavior intact while also removing horizontal
candidate-window jumping.
We have a lot of long blocking tasks on both the foreground and
background, this is a start of getting some insight into those.
We will now log tasks running longer then 100ms on the foreground or
background. Hanging actions will also be logged including their name. We
simultaneously collect statistics on task and action performance and
send those to telemetry. This includes quantiles and averages for each
hanging task.
Finally this adds tree dev actions:
- hang action
- hang foreground
- hang background
These cause a hang to check if hang reporting is working and in the
future telemetry.
### Summary
Adds the first pass at `#[gpui::bench]`, backed by Criterion, with a new
`BenchAppContext` for GPUI benchmarks.
This ports one editor benchmark to the new setup while keeping the
existing Criterion render benchmarks in place.
### Follow Ups
I eventually want to improve this framework to create custom tracy
profiles that includes additional information such as
- notify count
- entity.update count and time
- event emitted and time for that
I also want to use this to create custom measurements so benches can be
used for
- Frames dropped
- foreground thread time
- Render time
- etc
This PR is a very small proof of initial concept and I'll continue to
build this infrastructure out so Zed and other gpui apps can become a
lot more resilient to dropping frames and hangs. Plus it will make
improving performance a lot easier as well in the future.
I encountered this bug while building my app with GPUI where tooltips
were getting stuck when i move my mouse away from the origin element.
Zed kinda gets away with it because tab close buttons use
`visible_on_hover`, so when the mouse leaves the tab, close button
disappears. This triggers a redraw which makes GPUI recheck and hide the
tooltip.
In the "Before" version i had to trigger the recheck by moving my mouse
over an element with hover styles to make the tooltip disappear.
validates that callers don't return multiple paths when
`PathPromptOptions::multiple` is false.
Adds `scheduler::spawn_dedicated_thread` (and inherent `spawn_dedicated`
methods on `PlatformScheduler` and `TestScheduler`) so single-threaded
actors that own `!Send` state can run on their own OS thread and freely
do blocking I/O without disturbing any other executor.
### Why
A single-threaded actor that needs to do blocking syscalls is currently
stuck: it can't run on the shared foreground executor (blocking would
stall every other foreground session), and it can't move to the
background pool because its state isn't `Send`. `spawn_dedicated` gives
each such actor its own thread and its own `LocalExecutor`, while still
participating in the same testable scheduler infrastructure as
everything else.
### Shape
- `pub fn spawn_dedicated_thread(session_id, scheduler, f) -> Task<_>`
in `scheduler`. Owns the OS thread, the per-session runnable channel,
and the `LocalExecutor` setup.
- Inherent `spawn_dedicated` on `PlatformScheduler` (allocates its own
`SessionId`, delegates to the free function).
- Inherent `spawn_dedicated` on `TestScheduler` (no real thread — runs
as a fresh local session driven by the test scheduler's run loop, so
determinism under `many` is preserved).
- Renames `Scheduler::schedule_foreground` → `schedule_local` and
`scheduler::ForegroundExecutor` → `scheduler::LocalExecutor` to reflect
that these are session-pinned queues rather than "the main thread" (a
dedicated session runs on its own thread). GPUI's wrapper
`gpui::ForegroundExecutor` and the `foreground_executor` field/method
names are unchanged to keep blast radius small.
- `LocalExecutor::new` now takes an explicit dispatch closure, so the
routing decision (default session, dedicated thread, or something else)
lives at the construction site.
### Tests
- `TestScheduler` side: round-trip, `!Send` future, `Send` closure
capturing shared state, inner `executor.spawn`, determinism under `many`
seeds, drop-cancels-future, detached child runs after root completes.
- `PlatformScheduler` side: real separate thread (blocking syscalls
don't stall the test), `!Send` future output, drop-cancels-future,
thread tears down after work completes, detached child outlives root.
## Motivation (i.e. a mini post-mortem about the #56065 panics)
Merging #56065 caused some nasty panics in nightly. This was caused by a
bug in the logic for selecting a focus node for a `TreeUpdate`.
AccessKit panics when an invalid `TreeUpdate` is provided.
My assumption was that, since Zed uses no a11y APIs, and also that
essentially 0 zed users would have AT apps running, that merging this PR
would have no effect on the behaviour of Zed itself. However, two issues
combined to cause the panics:
- It seems like many people (everyone?) on mac gets the activation
callback called by accesskit_macos. A quick search suggests this might
be due to password managers searching for password fields, but not sure
how true that is.
- The bug in question related to *forgetting to check* whether a node
used a11y APIs, so we *were* pushing non-empty `TreeUpdate`s
As a (probably temporary) defensive measure, I added a function to try
to detect the bad cases and fix them. But it would be lovely if this
could live in AccessKit itself, since it would mean we wouldn't have to
do the check twice (once in GPUI, once in AccessKit). This would also
help prevent drift when updating accesskit versions if new invariants
are added.
We also cannot protect against this with `catch_unwind`, since we use
`panic=abort`. So our only option unfortunately is to temporarily
disable AccessKit until we know our implementation is stable.
We were missing a check when setting the focused node ID, causing a
panic in accesskit's internal validation logic. Fixes the bug, and adds
some defensive logic to help mitigate potential future issues.
You can reproduce the panic by:
- turning on a screenreader
- launching zed
- opening a menu and pressing tab
This change fixes it.
GPUI AccessKit integration
This PR is replacing #51097 , and is much more limited in scope. This PR
*ONLY* adds AccessKit support to GPUI, and doesn't touch Zed. Once this
lands, we can start adding aria attributes to Zed's components.
This PR is the first step to addressing #41138 .
Closes ZED-86Q
Fixes this (rare) crash by making entity creation via a window context
The shape of the result is a bit clunky due to the type signatures
When truncating text at the end with an ellipsis, the truncation point
can land right after a space or punctuation character, producing results
like `"some text …"` or `"some text-…"`.
This trims trailing whitespace and ASCII punctuation from the truncated
prefix before appending the ellipsis affix, so you get clean results
like `"some text…"` instead.
Release Notes:
- Improved text truncation to avoid trailing spaces or punctuation
before the ellipsis.
The `draw()` method was calling `.pop()` on `next_frame.input_handlers`
to extract the active input handler for the platform window. This
reduced the Vec length, making cached `paint_range` indices stale. On
the next frame, when a cached view called `reuse_paint()`, it would
index into `rendered_frame.input_handlers` with out-of-bounds indices,
causing a panic: `range start index 1 out of range for slice of length
0`.
**Fix:** Use `.last_mut().and_then(|h| h.take())` instead of `.pop()` to
extract the handler without changing the Vec length. The slot becomes
`None`, which is already handled by `reuse_paint`'s `.take()` logic.
## Summary
Fixes scroll position inversion when content height changes during a
scrollbar drag (e.g. in the agent panel while streaming responses).
### Root cause
`set_offset_from_scrollbar` used the **live** `items.summary().height`
for `content_height` and computed a `drag_offset` correction (`live −
frozen`). However, `max_offset_for_scrollbar()` → `max_scroll_offset()`
already uses the **frozen** `scrollbar_drag_start_height` during drag.
This mismatch means:
1. The scrollbar computes thumb position using the frozen height range
2. `set_offset_from_scrollbar` converts that position using the live
height range
3. As content grows during drag, `drag_offset` increases
4. `(point.y - drag_offset).abs()` produces an incorrectly large value,
overshooting `scroll_max`
The `.abs()` call also masked the sign convention:
`compute_click_offset` (in `scrollbar.rs`) returns `-max_offset *
percentage` — a negative value — but `.abs()` converted it regardless of
sign, hiding the mismatch.
### Fix
- Use `scrollbar_drag_start_height` (frozen during drag) for
`content_height` in `set_offset_from_scrollbar`, matching
`max_scroll_offset()`. Both sides of the scrollbar mapping now use the
same height reference.
- Replace `(point.y - drag_offset).abs()` with `(-point.y)` to correctly
convert the negative scroll offset.
- Remove the symmetric `drag_offset` from
`scroll_px_offset_for_scrollbar`, which reported position back to the
scrollbar and suffered from the same inconsistency.
- Update existing tests to use negative offsets, matching the actual
values produced by the scrollbar component.
- Add a regression test that freezes height, grows content, drags the
scrollbar, and asserts the position is correct.
## Test plan
- [x] Existing tests updated to use correct sign convention (negative
offsets)
- [x] New regression test `test_scrollbar_drag_with_growing_content`:
verifies scroll position remains correct when content grows during a
scrollbar drag
- [ ] Manual: open agent panel, start a long generation, drag scrollbar
while content is streaming — position should track the thumb correctly
Release Notes:
- Fixed scrollbar position jumping or inverting when content height
changes during a scrollbar drag (e.g. in the agent panel while
streaming).
When running `cargo run -p gpui --example hello_world` on a wayland
`gpui::guess_compositor()` correctly returns `"Wayland"`, but the
corresponding match arm is gated behind `#[cfg(feature = "wayland")]` in
`gpui_linux`, and that feature is never enabled. During the extract
gpui_platform refactor (#49277), the `wayland` and `x11` features were
added to the `zed` binary's dependency on `gpui_platform`, but were
missed in the `[dev-dependencies]` of `gpui/Cargo.toml`, which is what
the examples use.
This PR adds the missing features to the dev-dependency so that
`gpui_platform` propagates them to `gpui_linux` when building examples.
## Summary
Expose whether the scrollbar is currently being dragged via a new
`is_scrollbar_dragging()` method on `ListState`.
This returns `true` between `scrollbar_drag_started()` and
drags from wheel/trackpad scrolls, which is useful for suppressing
auto-scroll or follow-tail behavior during manual scrollbar positioning.
## Problem
A Sentry-reported crash on Windows (Intel Iris Xe Graphics, v1.0.1):
```
index out of bounds: the len is 1 but the index is 1
```
panicking at `DirectXAtlasState::texture` in
[`crates/gpui_windows/src/directx_atlas.rs`](https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/blob/main/crates/gpui_windows/src/directx_atlas.rs):
```rust
AtlasTextureKind::Subpixel => {
&self.subpixel_textures[id.index as usize].as_ref().unwrap()
}
```
## Root cause
After a GPU device-lost recovery, GPUI's view cache replays stale
`AtlasTile`
references from the previous frame's `paint_operations` via
`Scene::replay`.
1. **Atlas grows past one texture.** A long enough session pushes
`subpixel_textures.textures.len() ≥ 2` (easy on Iris Xe at the default
1024×1024 atlas size). Top-level views in Zed use `cached(...)`, so
their
`AnyViewState.paint_range` records into
`rendered_frame.scene.paint_operations`,
referencing both index `0` and index `1`.
2. **Device lost.** `handle_device_lost` clears every `AtlasTextureList`
(`textures.len() == 0`)
and `tiles_by_key`, then sets `skip_draws = true`.
3. **`WM_GPUI_FORCE_UPDATE_WINDOW` arrives.** `mark_drawable()` flips
`skip_draws` back to `false` and `request_frame` runs with
`force_render: true`.
4. **The cache hit.** Inside `Window::draw`, `AnyView::prepaint`'s cache
check (`!dirty_views.contains(...) && !window.refreshing`) succeeds for
every cached view because the recovery doesn't touch invalidator state
and
`force_render` doesn't propagate into `Window`. `AnyView::paint` calls
`window.reuse_paint` → `Scene::replay` → `primitive.clone()`, which
(since
`SubpixelSprite`/`AtlasTile` are `Copy`) verbatim copies a
`Primitive::SubpixelSprite { tile: { texture_id: { index: 1, ... }, ...
} }`
into `next_frame.scene`.
5. **Atlas regrows to one.** Dirty/uncached parts of the same frame
(caret, animations, anything that called `cx.notify`) fall through to
`paint_glyph` → `get_or_insert_with` → `push_texture`, growing
`subpixel_textures.textures` from `0` to **`1`** with index `0` valid.
6. **Panic.** After `mem::swap`, `rendered_frame.scene` contains a mix
of
fresh `index = 0` and replayed `index = 1` sprites. `Scene::batches`
emits separate batches per `texture_id`; the `index = 1` batch reaches
`atlas.get_texture_view` → `subpixel_textures[1]` → panic with
`len = 1, index = 1`.
The two earlier related fixes do not catch this:
- **#52389 / c8f20c78** (`if force_render { mark_drawable }`) protects
the
200 ms recovery sleep — pending `WM_PAINT`s carry `force_render = false`
and so do not clear `skip_draws`. But `WM_GPUI_FORCE_UPDATE_WINDOW`
carries `force_render = true`, so `mark_drawable` runs, then
`Window::draw`'s `reuse_paint` still reproduces stale tiles.
- The unmerged Windows draft `2e5d890e37`
(`force_render_after_recovery`)
similarly only forces the forced-render branch — it doesn't bypass the
view cache.
## Fix
Two parts:
**1. Bypass the view cache on a forced draw (cross-platform).**
In the platform-agnostic `request_frame` closure in `Window::new`, call
`window.refresh()` whenever `RequestFrameOptions::force_render` is
`true`.
`Window::refresh` is the documented escape hatch for cached views (per
the
`AnyView::cached` docs: *"The one exception is when [Window::refresh] is
called, in which case caching is ignored."*). With `refreshing = true`
every `AnyView::prepaint` cache check fails, every cached view fully
repaints, and `paint_glyph` allocates fresh tiles for every glyph, so
`rendered_frame.scene` ends up free of stale `AtlasTile`s.
**2. Add the `force_render_after_recovery` flag on Windows.**
Mirror the Linux fix from #52389: a per-window `Cell<bool>` set after
`WindowsWindowInner::handle_device_lost` succeeds and consumed at the
top
of `draw_window`. Together with the GPUI change above, the first frame
after recovery (whether a stray `WM_PAINT` during the 200 ms recovery
sleep or the explicit `WM_GPUI_FORCE_UPDATE_WINDOW`) is treated as a
forced render that both clears `skip_draws` and bypasses the view cache.
## Testing
cross-compiled `gpui_windows`. Reviewers with Windows access — please
Before this PR, `ListState` always used a proportional pending scroll
fraction to preserve the relative scroll position when list items were
resized. This caused text to creep in the agent panel when the scrollbar
was in the middle of the list while the agent was generating text,
because streaming updates changed the logical scroll top slightly.
This PR fixes that behavior by using an absolute offset when only a
subset of items is remeasured, added, or deleted, keeping the logical
top position stable.
This PR preserves the scroll offset of the List used in Recent Projects
while deleting items. It does that by:
- Adding the `is_scrolled_to_end` method to the GPUI list, which helps
us determine where the new selection should be, since it depends on
whether items are taking the deleted slot from below or above.
- Adding `ScrollBehavior` to `update_matches`, which lets you preserve
the scroll offset even for `List` (not `UniformList`) after a reset.
Adds 4 (technically 5) new tools to the zed agent, corresponding to LSP
actions:
- `find_references`
- `goto_definition`
- `rename_symbol`
- `get_code_actions` and `apply_code_actions`
Notes:
- `rename_symbol` skips doing a `prepare_rename`. If there is nothing to
rename at the position, it will forward the error to the agent
- The code action tools are stateful. The state is stored in the
`get_code_actions` tool itself as a `PendingCodeActions`. It is not
passed into/out of subagents. Calling `apply_code_actions` without
calling `get_code_actions` first is an error, but I've never seen an
agent do this
Symbols are identified by:
- file name
- line number
- symbol
If there is no substring match on that line for the symbol text, it is
an error. If there are multiple, it chooses the first. This may not be
great if you have a line like: `fn convert(x: foo::Something) ->
bar::Something` - the second `Something` is a different symbol, but is
inacessible to these tools. Probably fine for now, but we can look into
improving
Instead of manually handing hiding the cursor on keyboard input at the
editor level, GPUI will now take care of it.
This makes it significantly easier to handle the edge cases, and allows
delegating the cursor restoration to the platform itself in the macOS
case. On Linux and Windows, we still have to restore the cursor on
movement ourselves, but this now happens at the platform-specific level.
Bugs fixed by this change:
- No cursor when "Unsaved edits" prompt appears
- Cursor disappears when clicking a panel button if it contains a search
bar (e.g. collab panel)
### Setting rename
The `hide_mouse` setting value `"on_typing_and_movement"` has been
renamed to `"on_typing_and_action"` to better reflect what it actually
does — it hides the cursor when a keystroke resolves to an action (e.g.
cursor movement, deletion). Existing settings are migrated
automatically.
Closes#53202
`Anchored::prepaint` computes the bounding box of its children to
determine the size used for fitting the anchored element in the window.
Previously, this calculation manually tracked the minimum origin and
maximum bottom-right point, initializing the maximum point to `(0, 0)`.
If child bounds were in negative coordinates, the maximum point could be
clamped to `(0, 0)`, inflating the computed size.
This replaces the manual min/max accumulation with `Bounds::union`,
starting from the actual child bounds instead of sentinel values. This
computes the child bounding box correctly regardless of coordinate sign.
Apple's text rendering stack dilates glyph outlines for text rendered
with a light foreground color. Zed doesn't consider this nuance today;
we populate our atlas using glyphs rendered with a dark foreground
color. This means that, particularly in dark themes, text in Zed looks
thin and blurry, and doesn't match the look of native macOS
applications.
This pull request replicates the native behavior of Core Graphics. Some
reverse-engineering revealed that CG computes the foreground color
luminance using the Rec. 709 formula ($Y=0.2126R + 0.7152B + 0.0722G$)
and quantizes it into five levels (0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1). Each
level uses a different dilation factor.
With this patch, we calculate this same luminance bucket and supply it
as the foreground color during rasterization. The correct dilation will
be applied, and we'll store this glyph in the atlas keyed by this
luminance bucket. So, we'll generate and use up to 5 different bitmaps
for each glyph based on its foreground color.
I've confirmed that text rendered by Zed now exactly matches native
applications like Safari, TextEdit, etc.
- Improved text rendering clarity on macOS, particularly in dark themes.
#48029 introduced `set_document_path` which is frequently (we are also
working on a PR to make it less frequent) called as tabs and panes
update. Apparently, the AppKit function it uses
(`NSWindow::setRepresentedFilename`) can cause the current cursor style
to be reset, producing flicker as the cursor would change to `Arrow`
temporarily until the right cursor style is set again in the next frame.
This PR reworks how we set the cursor to use AppKit's
`resetCursorRects`, giving us a chance to re-set the cursor when the OS
decides to invalidate it.
Finally, it fixes a separate bug introduced in #50827 where moving the
mouse while typing in an editor would cause to the cursor to flicker
between `None` (hidden) -> `Arrow` -> `IBeam`. This was caused by
incorrectly resetting the cursor to `Arrow` when the last input came
from the keyboard.
