The "Panel Layout" submenu available in the user menu exposed two quick
menu items to switch between the classic and agentic workspace layout.
These will now also be available as actions, reachable through the

Removes the `skills` feature flag now that Skills are ready to ship to
all users. Cleans up all `cx.has_flag::<SkillsFeatureFlag>()` gates
across the agent, agent_ui, prompt_store, and title_bar crates, drops
the now-unused `feature_flags` dependency from `prompt_store` and

Adds a one-time, idempotent startup migration that moves every user Rule
out of the `PromptStore` LMDB database into the new Skills + AGENTS.md
world, in a single pass:
- **Non-Default Rules → global Skills.** Each one becomes
`~/.agents/skills/<slug>/SKILL.md` with `disable-model-invocation:
true`, preserving the original behavior that non-Default Rules were only
ever invoked when the user named them. They're now invokable via
`/skill-name` (and still `@`-mentions).
- **Default Rules → global AGENTS.md.** Each one is appended to
`paths::agents_file()` (e.g. `~/.config/zed/AGENTS.md` on macOS/Linux,
`%APPDATA%\Zed\AGENTS.md` on Windows) under an `## H2` heading
containing the rule's title. Default Rules used to be auto-included in
every conversation; the global AGENTS.md is loaded into the system
prompt of every conversation, so the behavior is preserved.
- **Customized built-in prompts → global AGENTS.md** (currently just the
commit-message prompt). If the user has edited a built-in away from
Zed's shipped `default_content()`, the edited body is appended at the
top of the AGENTS.md block. Uncustomized built-ins (still on the shipped
default) are skipped so we don't pollute AGENTS.md with text the user
never wrote.
The migration is gated on the `skills` feature flag — users without the
flag never have their Rules touched in any way. A single global KVP flag
(`rules_to_skills_migration_done`) short-circuits the migration on
subsequent launches, so it runs at most once per machine even across
release channels. A process-lifetime `AtomicBool` guard additionally
prevents racing duplicate spawns when the underlying `cx.on_flags_ready`
callback fires multiple times at startup.
Migration is intentionally non-destructive: rule rows in the LMDB
database stay in place. Users can still see and edit them through the
existing UI, and a downgrade to a Zed build without skills support won't
lose anything.
Slug generation (`agent_skills::slugify_skill_name`) lowercases ASCII
letters, turns spaces into dashes, and drops every other
non-alphanumeric character entirely — so `foo!bar` becomes `foobar`, not
`foo-bar`. `&` is special-cased to become `and` (so `rock&roll` →
`rock-and-roll`). Slug collisions and pre-existing skill directories are
handled by appending `-2`, `-3`, etc.
A title-bar onboarding banner ("Skills have replaced Rules") surfaces
for every user on the `skills` feature flag. Clicking it opens a small
`AlertModal`-based explainer that summarizes the two destinations and
points users at the new `/skill-name` slash command (and notes that
`@`-mentions still work).

With the release of the parallel agents feature, we changed the default
panel positions optimizing for an agentic-first layout. Even though we
introduced a settings backfill _and_ the ability to revert after
interacting with the announcement toast, this change seems to be causing
a bit of frustration still. In response, this PR adds a "Panel Layout"
menu in the user menu that allows to quickly toggle between the
"Classic" layout and the "Agentic" layout. If you have a different set
up, you'll see a "custom" item there just confirming that.

Release Notes:
- Added a menu item in the user menu called "Panel Layout" which offers
the ability to quickly swap between the two standard panel layouts:
classic (project panel, git panel, etc., on the left) and agentic (agent
panel on the left, everything else on the right).
Remove the standalone storybook binary and the story crate, as component
previews are now handled by the component_preview crate.
Also removes the stories features from the ui and title_bar crates.

Follow-up to https://github.com/zed-industries/zed/pull/46641.
In the PR linked above, I had introduced a dropdown that'd show up in
the title bar when the workspace contained more than one project.
Although that helped improve the multi-project use case, it created some
quirky designs:
- The project dropdown and the recent project pickers looked too
different from one another
- The transition between the 2 project case to the 1 project scenario,
from the dropdown, was not great, because you'd be then seeing the
bigger recent projects picker
- The `workspace: switch project` action was still reachable in the
command palette even if you had one project in the workspace
So, what this PR does is essentially fixing all of this by consolidating
it all in the Recent Projects picker. If you are in a multi-project
scenario, the picker will display a section with all of the projects on
the workspace allowing you to activate each one of them. The picker also
looks simpler when you reach it by clicking on the project name in the
title bar, as opposed to through the keybinding. I've then removed the
project dropdown code as well as the action, given we don't need them
anymore due to the consolidation. Lastly, I tackled the inconsistent
wording used between "Folders", "Projects", and "Workspaces".

Currently, whenever Zed has a new version available for download, the
update button shows up in the status bar. Problem is: that status bar
slot can also display other buttons/information, such as problems with
your language server or general errors. In case the two things exist (a
problem and a new version), just one of them would be displayed, which
is not great; you should be able to see both. Additionally, given we
ship new versions pretty often, I've frequently saw feedback about
wanting to hide away the new version button... at least temporarily
while there's no immediate interest in upgrading.
So, this PR tackles all of that. The button to update a new version is
moved up to the title bar, nearby your avatar, and you have the ability
to dismiss, which effectively just moves the button from the title bar
to inside your user menu.

This PR introduces a project dropdown when working with multiple
folders/projects in one workspace. Here are some interaction details
that I hope improves the UX of working on this scenario significantly:
- The dropdown shows the currently "active" project, which is determined
by:
- Either the file you're currently editing
- Or the file you have just recently switched to
- Some example cases:
- If you are focused on file from project A but switch to project B in
the titlebar, nothing happens. However, as soon as you type on the file
from project A, the title bar will update and your active project will
return to being project A.
- If you're focused on file from project A and change tabs to a file
from project B, the title bar will update, showing project B as the
active one.
- The content you'll see in the branch picker will correspond to the
currently active project
- It's still possible to reach the "Recent Projects" picker through the
project dropdown
- It's possible to do all interactions (trigger dropdown, select active
project, and remove project from workspace) with the keyboard
https://github.com/user-attachments/assets/e2346757-74df-47c5-bf4d-6354623b6f47
Note that this entire UX is valid only for a multiple folder workspace
scenario; nothing changes for the single project case.
Release Notes:
- Workspace: Improved the UX of working with multiple projects in the
same workspace through introducing a project dropdown that more clearly
shows the currently active project as well as allowing you to change it.
This PR adds a setting to prevent projects from being shared in public
channels.
This can be enabled by adding the following to the project settings
(`.zed/settings.json`):
```json
{
"prevent_sharing_in_public_channels": true
}
```
This will then disable the "Share" button when not in a private channel:

Release Notes:
- collaboration: Added a `prevent_sharing_in_public_channels` project
setting for preventing projects from being shared in public channels.
We've been considering removing workspace-hack for a couple reasons:
- Lukas ran into a situation where its build script seemed to be causing
spurious rebuilds. This seems more likely to be a cargo bug than an
issue with workspace-hack itself (given that it has an empty build
script), but we don't necessarily want to take the time to hunt that
down right now.
- Marshall mentioned hakari interacts poorly with automated crate
updates (in our case provided by rennovate) because you'd need to have
`cargo hakari generate && cargo hakari manage-deps` after their changes
and we prefer to not have actions that make commits.
Currently removing workspace-hack causes our workspace to grow from
~1700 to ~2000 crates being built (depending on platform), which is
mainly a problem when you're building the whole workspace or running
tests across the the normal and remote binaries (which is where
feature-unification nets us the most sharing). It doesn't impact
incremental times noticeably when you're just iterating on `-p zed`, and
we'll hopefully get these savings back in the future when
rust-lang/cargo#14774 (which re-implements the functionality of hakari)
is finished.

## Goal
This PR creates the initial settings ui structure with the primary goal
of making a settings UI that is
- Comprehensive: All settings are available through the UI
- Correct: Easy to understand the underlying JSON file from the UI
- Intuitive
- Easy to implement per setting so that UI is not a hindrance to future
settings changes
### Structure
The overall structure is settings layer -> data layer -> ui layer.
The settings layer is the pre-existing settings definitions, that
implement the `Settings` trait. The data layer is constructed from
settings primarily through the `SettingsUi` trait, and it's associated
derive macro. The data layer tracks the grouping of the settings, the
json path of the settings, and a data representation of how to render
the controls for the setting in the UI, that is either a marker value
for the component to use (avoiding a dependency on the `ui` crate) or a
custom render function.
Abstracting the data layer from the ui layer allows crates depending on
`settings` to implement their own UI without having to add additional UI
dependencies, thus avoiding circular dependencies. In cases where custom
UI is desired, and a creating a custom render function in the same crate
is infeasible due to circular dependencies, the current solution is to
implement a marker for the component in the `settings` crate, and then
handle the rendering of that component in `settings_ui`.
### Foundation
This PR creates a macro and a trait both called `SettingsUi`. The
`SettingsUi` trait is added as a new trait bound on the `Settings`
trait, this allows the type system to guarantee that all settings
implement UI functionality. The macro is used to derived the trait for
most types, and can be modified through attributes for unique cases as
well.
A derive-macro is used to generate the settings UI trait impl, allowing
it the UI generation to be generated from the static information in our
code base (`default.json`, Struct/Enum names, field names, `serde`
attributes, etc). This allows the UI to be auto-generated for the most
part, and ensures consistency across the UI.
#### Immediate Follow ups
- Add a new `SettingsPath` trait that will be a trait bound on
`SettingsUi` and `Settings`
- This trait will replace the `Settings::key` value to enable
`SettingsUi` to infer the json path of it's derived type
- Figure out how to render `Option<T> where T: SettingsUi` correctly
- Handle `serde` attributes in the `SettingsUi` proc macro to correctly
get json path from a type's field and identity

This adds a "workspace-hack" crate, see
[mozilla's](https://hg.mozilla.org/mozilla-central/file/3a265fdc9f33e5946f0ca0a04af73acd7e6d1a39/build/workspace-hack/Cargo.toml#l7)
for a concise explanation of why this is useful. For us in practice this
means that if I were to run all the tests (`cargo nextest r
--workspace`) and then `cargo r`, all the deps from the previous cargo
command will be reused. Before this PR it would rebuild many deps due to
resolving different sets of features for them. For me this frequently
caused long rebuilds when things "should" already be cached.
To avoid manually maintaining our workspace-hack crate, we will use
[cargo hakari](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari) to update the build files
when there's a necessary change. I've added a step to CI that checks
whether the workspace-hack crate is up to date, and instructs you to
re-run `script/update-workspace-hack` when it fails.
Finally, to make sure that people can still depend on crates in our
workspace without pulling in all the workspace deps, we use a `[patch]`
section following [hakari's
instructions](https://docs.rs/cargo-hakari/0.9.36/cargo_hakari/patch_directive/index.html)
One possible followup task would be making guppy use our
`rust-toolchain.toml` instead of having to duplicate that list in its
config, I opened an issue for that upstream: guppy-rs/guppy#481.
